Status of the Short-Baseline Near Detector at Fermilab

The Short-Baseline Near Detector (SBND) is one of the Liquid Argon Time Projection Chamber (LArTPC) neutrino detectors positioned along the axis of the Booster Neutrino Beam (BNB) at Fermilab, and is the near detector in the Short-Baseline Neutrino (SBN) Program. The detector completed commissioning and began taking neutrino data in the summer of 2024. SBND is characterized by superb imaging capabilities and will record around 2 million neutrino interactions per year. Thanks to its unique combination of measurement resolution and statistics, SBND will soon carry out a rich program of neutrino interaction measurements and novel searches for physics beyond the Standard Model (BSM). As the near detector, it will enable the full potential of the SBN sterile neutrino program by performing a precise characterization of the unoscillated event rate and constraining BNB flux and neutrino-argon cross-section systematic uncertainties. In this talk, the physics reach, current status, and future prospects of SBND are discussed.

FY25 Status Update on A709 Code Case Testing at ANL

This report provides an update on the status of the creep rupture testing on the precipitation-treated (PT) Alloy 709 samples fabricated from the first, the second and the third commercial heats, in support of the first, 100,000-hour Alloy 709 Code Case development under the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Section III, Division 5 for high-temperature reactor construction. In Fiscal Year (FY) 25, no new tests were initiated, while 5 previously loaded tests were completed. This report presents an overview of the creep-rupture data gathered at Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) since FY21 that totaled 52 completed tests. Metallographic images showing crack morphologies in some representative samples ruptured in FY25 are also included. Key conclusions include: 1) the creep behavior of the three heats of Alloy 709 can be well described by the Larson-Miller relationship; 2) higher temperatures and larger stresses lead to shorter creep life and higher minimum creep rate; 3) Alloy 709 is overall very ductile under creep; 4) the crack morphologies near fracture surfaces are dependent on material’s grain size and test conditions.

BOILER Experiment Material Characterization and HFIR Irradiation Status

Pre-oxidized alumina-forming austenitic (AFA) steels have been previously identified as candidate alloys for structural components in lead-cooled fast reactors (LFRs). They offer compatibility with liquid Pb, high-temperature strength, formability, and cost advantages. However, variations in Ni content can affect the formation and stability of the Al 2 O 3 layer, influencing compatibility with liquid Pb. The effect of fast neutron irradiation on Al 2 O 3 stability in liquid Pb also requires evaluation. Therefore, understanding how Ni concentrations impacts pre-oxidized AFAs under combined extremes of irradiation and liquid metal corrosion is essential before safe deployment. The Behavior Of In-situ Lead Environments & Radiation (BOILER) experiment was developed under the Nuclear Science User Facilities (NSUF) program to integrate alloy development, irradiation experiment design, and irradiated materials characterization. In this effort, two pre-oxidized AFA steels with 20 wt% and 25 wt% Ni, hereinafter referred to as GA05-20Ni and GA05-25Ni, were produced. An irradiation experiment was then planned for the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR), designed for passive heating of irradiation rabbit capsules from gamma heating in the HFIR flux trap (1 × 10 15 n/cm 2 ·s, >0.1 MeV). This heating melts Pb and exposes the pre-oxidized AFA steel specimens to nominal temperatures of 400 and 650°C. Detailed neutronics and thermal analyses were performed, though based on nominal design rather than as-built, as-irradiated conditions. This report documents further characterization of the pre-oxidized AFAs in the unirradiated condition. It also includes as-built thermal analysis using measured component dimensions, updated fill gas concentrations, and actual HFIR irradiation positions. Finally, the report summarizes capsule fabrication, current irradiation status, projected completion, estimated damage accumulation, and initial plans for post-irradiation examination plans.

Automated Ride Hailing - Status, Projections, and Critical Safety Review

Automated ride-hailing services, commonly known as 'robo-taxis' are beginning to proliferate and scale. Currently they are available in four major US cities with another 10 cities planning their implementation in the near future. In the US, automated ride-hailing services are dominated by a single provider, with announcements from several competitors of service offerings by end of calendar year 2025. Internationally, only three companies are currently in commercial operations, with many more planned. The scaling of robo-taxi services appears to be the leading application of automated vehicles (AVs), and provides evidence of their anticipated safety in comparison to conventional vehicles. This presentation will provide an overview of the status of deployments of fully operational AVs in ride-hailing services, projections of the number of trips, vehicles, and vehicle miles traveled for the immediate future, and a critical review of the safety data that has been reported, both in the US as well as internationally.

Status of Cable Aging Knowledge Gaps Identified in the Expanded Materials Degradation Assessment (EMDA)

This report summarizes research relevant to cable aging knowledge gaps identified in NUREG/CR-7153, “Expanded Materials Degradation Assessment (EMDA) Volume 5: Aging of Cables and Cable Systems” (EMDA Vol. 5), performed since the EMDA Vol. 5 was published in 2014. It begins with a discussion of the status of cables in long-term operation of U.S. nuclear power plants (NPPs) and the most common cables found in NPP containment. Next, the major polymer cable insulations, and the mechanisms of concern for degradation of those polymers in service are reviewed. A description of the environmental qualification (EQ) process historically used for safety-related cables is provided as is a review of the potential concerns with that process highlighted in the EMDA Vol. 5. Research addressing each of these is then reviewed. Finally, three potential strategies to support continued safe operation of aging cables are proposed: advanced condition-based verification, targeted material aging studies, and predictive simulation.

Status of the Slow Extraction Commissioning for the Mu2e Experiment at Fermilab

We present the current status of slow-extraction commissioning for the Mu2e experiment at Fermilab. The system employs third-integer resonant extraction of 8 GeV protons from the Delivery Ring to deliver a uniform, slow-spilled beam to the production target. During recent commissioning periods, we achieved stable optics, reproducible injection and energy matching, and consistent multi-spill operation. The sextupole circuits and fast-ramping quadrupoles were exercised near nominal resonance conditions, yielding promising extraction performance. A prototype spill-regulation system based on the ARIA-10 SoC was commissioned with integrated diagnostics, demonstrating closed-loop operation and establishing the framework for PID- and RFKO-based control. These commissioning results lay the foundation for achieving precision-regulated, high-quality slow extraction in upcoming Mu2e operations.

Multi-Differential Charged Current 𝝂_𝝁− Argon Cross Section without Pions in the Final State Measurement in MicroBooNE , and Current Status of Simultaneous Cross Section Extraction with ANNIE

MicroBooNE, an 85-tonne liquid argon time projection chamber detector is on-axis to the Booster Neutrino Beam (BNB) at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. MicroBooNE is elucidating neutrino interactions with argon through cross-section measurements to refine interaction models and reduce uncertainties. In this poster, we present recent published single and double multi-differential charged current (CC) cross section with zero pions in the final state (CC-0 ) as a function of muon momentum ( ) and the cosine of the muon angle ( ). We present the details of the event selection and the extraction of 1D and 2D cross sections. We further report on the status of a simultaneous cross-section extraction conducted in conjunction with the ANNIE experiment, which employs a Gd-H O target and operates on the same BNB beamline. This joint measurement enables a precision test of nuclear A-dependence between oxygen and argon, with shared flux and cross-section model correlations leading to the cancellation of systematic uncertainties.
