Kondo screening in a Majorana metal

Kondo impurities provide a nontrivial probe to unravel the character of the excitations of a quantum spin liquid. In the S = 1/2 Kitaev model on the honeycomb lattice, Kondo impurities embedded in the spin-liquid host can be screened by itinerant Majorana fermions via gauge-flux binding. Here, we report experimental signatures of metallic-like Kondo screening at intermediate temperatures in the Kitaev honeycomb material α-RuCl 3 with dilute Cr 3+ (S = 3/2) impurities. The static magnetic susceptibility, the muon Knight shift, and the muon spin-relaxation rate all feature logarithmic divergences, a hallmark of a metallic Kondo effect. Concurrently, the linear coefficient of the magnetic specific heat is large in the same temperature regime, indicating the presence of a host Majorana metal. This observation opens new avenues for exploring uncharted Kondo physics in insulating quantum magnets.

Proximate ferromagnetic state in the Kitaev model material α-RuCl 3

α-RuCl 3 is a major candidate for the realization of the Kitaev quantum spin liquid, but its zigzag antiferromagnetic order at low temperatures indicates deviations from the Kitaev model. We have quantified the spin Hamiltonian of α-RuCl 3 by a resonant inelastic x-ray scattering study at the Ru L 3 absorption edge. In the paramagnetic state, the quasi-elastic intensity of magnetic excitations has a broad maximum around the zone center without any local maxima at the zigzag magnetic Bragg wavevectors. This finding implies that the zigzag order is fragile and readily destabilized by competing ferromagnetic correlations. The classical ground state of the experimentally determined Hamiltonian is actually ferromagnetic. The zigzag state is stabilized by quantum fluctuations, leaving ferromagnetism – along with the Kitaev spin liquid – as energetically proximate metastable states. The three closely competing states and their collective excitations hold the key to the theoretical understanding of the unusual properties of α-RuCl 3 in magnetic fields.

A quantum liquid of magnetic octupoles on the pyrochlore lattice

Spin liquids are highly correlated yet disordered states formed by the entanglement of magnetic dipoles. Theories define such states using gauge fields and deconfined quasiparticle excitations that emerge from a local constraint governing the ground state of a frustrated magnet. For example, the ‘2-in–2-out’ ice rule for dipole moments on a tetrahedron can lead to a quantum spin ice in rare-earth pyrochlores. However, $f$-electron ions often carry multipole degrees of freedom of higher rank than dipoles, leading to intriguing behaviours and ‘hidden’ orders. In this paper we show that the correlated ground state of a Ce 3+ -based pyrochlore, Ce 2 Sn 2 O 7 , is a quantum liquid of magnetic octupoles. Our neutron scattering results are consistent with a fluid-like state where degrees of freedom have a more complex magnetization density than that of magnetic dipoles. The nature and strength of the octupole–octupole couplings, together with the existence of a continuum of excitations attributed to spinons, provides further evidence for a quantum ice of octupoles governed by a ‘2-plus–2-minus’ rule. Our work identifies Ce 2 Sn 2 O 7 as a unique example of frustrated multipoles forming a ‘hidden’ topological order, thus generalizing observations on quantum spin liquids to multipolar phases that can support novel types of emergent fields and excitations.

Emergent Z 2 Gauge Theories and Topological Excitations in Rydberg Atom Arrays

Strongly interacting arrays of Rydberg atoms provide versatile platforms for exploring exotic many-body phases and dynamics of correlated quantum systems. Motivated by recent experimental advances, we show that the combination of Rydberg interactions and appropriate lattice geometries naturally leads to emergent Z 2 gauge theories endowed with matter fields. Based on this mapping, we describe how Rydberg platforms could realize two distinct classes of topological Z 2 quantum spin liquids, which differ in their patterns of translational symmetry fractionalization. Additionally, we also discuss the natures of the fractionalized excitations of these Z 2 spin liquid states using both fermionic and bosonic parton theories and illustrate their rich interplay with proximate solid phases.

Microscopic Theory of Pair Density Waves in Spin-Orbit Coupled Kondo Lattice

We demonstrate that the discommensuration between the Fermi surfaces of a conduction sea and an underlying spin liquid provides a natural mechanism for the spontaneous formation of pair density waves. Using a recent formulation of the Kondo lattice model that incorporates a Yao Lee spin liquid proposed by the authors, we demonstrate that doping away from half filling induces finite-momentum electron-Majorana pair condensation, resulting in amplitude-modulated pair density waves (PDWs). Our approach provides a precise, analytically tractable pathway for understanding the spontaneous formation of PDWs in higher dimensions and offers a natural mechanism for PDW formation in the absence of Zeeman splitting.

Survival of itinerant excitations and quantum spin state transitions in YbMgGaO 4 with chemical disorder

A recent focus of quantum spin liquid (QSL) studies is how disorder/randomness in a QSL candidate affects its true magnetic ground state. The ultimate question is whether the QSL survives disorder or the disorder leads to a “spin-liquid-like” state, such as the proposed random-singlet (RS) state. Since disorder is a standard feature of most QSL candidates, this question represents a major challenge for QSL candidates. YbMgGaO 4 , a triangular lattice antiferromagnet with effective spin-1/2 Yb 3+ ions, is an ideal system to address this question, since it shows no long-range magnetic ordering with Mg/Ga site disorder. Despite the intensive study, it remains unresolved as to whether YbMgGaO 4 is a QSL or in the RS state. Here, through ultralow-temperature thermal conductivity and magnetic torque measurements, plus specific heat and DC magnetization data, we observed a residual κ 0 /T term and series of quantum spin state transitions in the zero temperature limit for YbMgGaO 4 . These observations strongly suggest that a QSL state with itinerant excitations and quantum spin fluctuations survives disorder in YbMgGaO 4 .

Static magnetic order with strong quantum fluctuations in spin-1/2 honeycomb magnet Na 2 Co 2 TeO 6

Kitaev interactions, arising from the interplay of frustration and bond anisotropy, can lead to strong quantum fluctuations and, in an ideal case, to a quantum-spin-liquid state. However, in many nonideal materials, spurious non-Kitaev interactions typically promote a zigzag antiferromagnetic order in the d-orbital transition-metal compounds. Here, by combining neutron scattering with muon-spin rotation and relaxation techniques, we provide mechanism insights into the exotic properties of Na 2 Co 2 TeO 6 , a candidate material of the Kitaev model. Below T N , the zero-field muon-spin relaxation rate becomes almost constant (~0.45 μs –1 ). We attribute this temperature-independent relaxation rate to the strong quantum fluctuations, as well as to the frustrated Kitaev interactions. As the magnetic field increases, neutron scattering data indicate a broader spin-wave excitation at the K-point. Therefore, quantum fluctuations seem not only robust but are even enhanced by the applied magnetic field. Our findings provide valuable hints for understanding the onset of the quantum-spin-liquid state in Kitaev materials.

NaRuO2: Kitaev-Heisenberg exchange in triangular-lattice setting

Abstract Kitaev exchange, a new paradigm in quantum magnetism research, occurs for 90° metal-ligand-metal links, $${t}_{2g}^{5}$$ t 2 g 5 transition ions, and sizable spin-orbit coupling. It is being studied in honeycomb compounds but also on triangular lattices. While for the former it is known by now that the Kitaev intersite couplings are ferromagnetic, for the latter the situation is unclear. Here we pin down the exchange mechanisms and determine the effective coupling constants in the $${t}_{2g}^{5}$$ t 2 g 5 triangular-lattice material NaRuO 2 , recently found to host a quantum spin liquid ground state. We show that, compared to honeycomb compounds, the characteristic triangular-lattice cation surroundings dramatically affect exchange paths and effective coupling parameters, changing the Kitaev interactions to antiferromagnetic. Quantum chemical analysis combined with subsequent effective spin model simulations provide perspective onto the nature of the experimentally observed quantum spin liquid—it seemingly implies fairly large antiferromagnetic second-neighbor isotropic exchange, and the atypical proximity to ferromagnetic order is related to ferromagnetic nearest-neighbor Heisenberg coupling.

Entanglement Randomness and Gapped Itinerant Carriers in a Frustrated Quantum Magnet

The quantum spin liquid is a state manifesting extraordinary many-body entanglement, and the material NaYbSe 2 is thought to be one of the most promising candidates for its realization. Through low-temperature heat capacity and thermal conductivity measurements, we identify an apparent contradiction familiar to many quantum spin liquid candidates: While entropy is stored by apparently gapless excitations, the itinerant carriers of entropy are gapped. By studying the compositional series NaYb 𝑥⁢ Lu 1−𝑥⁢ Se 2 across a percolation transition of the magnetic lattice, we suggest that this contradiction can be resolved by the presence of entanglement scales of random sizes. Moreover, as we truncate the scale of entanglement by magnetic dilution, we show that the itinerant magnetic entropy carrier in NaYbSe 2 does not arise from a uniform globally entangled spin ground state but rather materializes through the stochastic propagation of boundaries between locally entangled spin objects.

Order fractionalization in a Kitaev-Kondo model

We describe a mechanism for order fractionalization in a two-dimensional Kondo lattice model, in which electrons interact with a gapless spin liquid of Majorana fermions described by the Yao-Lee (YL) model. When the Kondo coupling to the conduction electrons exceeds a critical value, the model develops a superconducting instability into a state with a a spinor order parameter with charge 4 and spin ( = 1 2. The broken symmetry state develops a gapless Majorana Dirac cone in the bulk. By including an appropriate gauge string, we can show that the charge 4, spinorial order develops off-diagonal long range order that allows electrons to coherently tunnel arbitrarily long distances through the spin liquid.

Spin-orbital liquids and insulator-metal transitions on the pyrochlore lattice

The two orbital Hubbard model, with the electrons additionally coupled to a complex magnetic background, arises in the pyrochlore molybdates. The background involves local moments Hund's coupled to the electrons, driving double exchange ferromagnetism, and antiferromagnetic (AF) tendency arising from competing superexchange. The key scales include the Hubbard repulsion and the superexchange, both of which can be tuned in these materials. They control the phase transition from a ferromagnetic metal to a spin glass metal and then to a spin glass (Mott) insulator. We provide a comprehensive description of the ground state of this model using an unrestricted Hartree-Fock scheme implemented via a simulated annealing procedure and establish the metal-insulator transition line for varying Hubbard interaction and superexchange. The electrons see an effective disorder, due to orbital frustration, already in the ferromagnetic phase. The disorder is further enhanced by antiferromagnetic coupling and the resulting magnetic disorder. As a result, increasing AF coupling shifts the metal-insulator transition to lower Hubbard interaction and gives it an additional "Anderson" character. In conclusion, we provide detailed results on the magnetic and orbital correlations, the density of states, and the optical conductivity.

Magnetosynthesis Effect on the Structure and Ground State of Cu 2+ -Based Antiferromagnets

Synthetic variables can have an outsized influence on the crystal structure and magnetic properties of a material, particularly those of quantum materials. In this work, we investigate the impact of synthesis under a magnetic field (magnetosynthesis) on the crystal structure and magnetic properties of several Cu 2+ (S = 1/2)-based materials with antiferromagnetic interactions and varying levels of magnetic frustration, from simple antiferromagnets to a quantum spin liquid. Here, we develop methods to apply small (0.09–0.37 T) magnetic fields during low-temperature hydrothermal, evaporative, and rehydration syntheses of the simple antiferromagnet CuCl 2 ·2H 2 O, the canted antiferromagnet (Cu,Zn) 3 Cl 4 (OH) 2 ·2H 2 O, the frustrated and canted antiferromagnet atacamite Cu 2 (OH) 3 Cl, and the highly frustrated quantum spin liquid herbertsmithite Cu 3 Zn(OH) 6 Cl 2 . We report the first single-crystal X-ray structural determination of the Cu 3 Cl 4 (OH) 2 ·2H 2 O structure type and probe the stability of this phase both experimentally and computationally. Atacamite Cu 2 (OH) 3 Cl synthesized under a 0.19 T field experiences a 0.15 K (∼3%) decrease in its Néel transition temperature. This result suggests that magnetosynthesis with small applied fields may have a very subtle influence upon the magnetic properties of moderately magnetically frustrated 3 d materials.

Triangular lattice quantum dimer model with variable dimer density

Abstract Quantum dimer models are known to host topological quantum spin liquid phases, and it has recently become possible to simulate such models with Rydberg atoms trapped in arrays of optical tweezers. Here, we present large-scale quantum Monte Carlo simulation results on an extension of the triangular lattice quantum dimer model with terms in the Hamiltonian annihilating and creating single dimers. We find distinct odd and even $${{\mathbb{Z}}}_{2}$$ Z 2 spin liquids, along with several phases with no topological order: a staggered crystal, a nematic phase, and a trivial symmetric phase with no obvious broken symmetry. We also present dynamic spectra of the phases, and note implications for experiments on Rydberg atoms.

Geometrical frustration versus Kitaev interactions in BaCo 2 (AsO 4 ) 2

Recently, Co-based honeycomb magnets have been proposed as promising candidate materials to host the Kitaev spin liquid (KSL) state. One of the front-runners is BaCo 2 (AsO 4 ) 2 (BCAO), where it was suggested that the exchange processes between Co 2+ ions via the surrounding edge-sharing oxygen octahedra could give rise to bond-dependent Kitaev interactions. In this work, we present and analyze a comprehensive inelastic neutron scattering (INS) study of BCAO with fields in the honeycomb plane. Combining the constraints from the magnon excitations in the high-field polarized state and the inelastic spin structure factor measured in zero magnetic field, we examine two leading theoretical models: the Kitaev-type JK Γ Γ ′ model and the XXZ - J 1 - J 3 model. We show that the existing experimental data can be consistently accounted for by the XXZ - J 1 - J 3 model but not by the JK Γ Γ ′ model, and we discuss the implications of these results for the realization of a spin liquid phase in BCAO and more generally for the realization of the Kitaev model in cobaltates.

Detection of chiral spin fluctuations driven by frustration in Mott insulators

Topologically ordered states, such as chiral spin liquids, have been proposed as candidates that host fraction alized excitations. However, detecting chiral character or proximity to these nontrivial states remains a challenge. Resonant Raman scattering can be a powerful tool for detecting chiral fluctuations, as the 𝐴 2⁢𝑔 channel probes excitations with broken time-reversal symmetry and local chiral order. Here, we use exact diagonalization to characterize the resonant 𝐴 2⁢𝑔 channel, alongside two-magnon scattering in 𝐵 1⁢𝑔 and 𝐸 𝑔 channels, for the Hubbard model on lattices with increasing levels of geometric spin frustration, where tuning the incident energy near the Mott gap reveals strong chiral spin excitation intensity. In conclusion, increased spin frustration in the Mott insulator results in an overall softening of the Raman 𝐴 2⁢𝑔 response, indicating a tendency toward low energy chiral-chiral fluctuations in Mott insulators with magnetic frustration and proximity to chiral spin liquid states that can potentially be tuned by external perturbations.

Two-magnon bound states in the Kitaev model in a [111] field

It is now well established that the Kitaev honeycomb model in a magnetic field along the [111] direction harbors an intermediate gapless quantum spin liquid (QSL) phase sandwiched between a gapped non-Abelian QSL at low fields $H < H_{c1}$ and a partially polarized phase at high fields $H > H_{c2}$. Here, we analyze the low-field and high-field phases and phase transitions in terms of single- and two-magnon excitations using exact diagonalization and density matrix renormalization group methods. In this work, we find that the energy to create a bound state of two-magnon $Δ_p$ becomes lower than the energy to create a single spin flip $Δ_s$ near $H_{c2}$. In the entire Kitaev spin liquid, $Δ_p < Δ_s$ and both gaps vanish at $H_{c2}$. We make testable predictions for magnon pairing that could be observable in Raman scattering measurements on Kitaev QSL candidate materials.

Synthesis and Characterization of Metastable Cobalt Honeycomb KCoAsO 4

The Kitaev model has served as a long-sought-after target in the realization of a quantum spin liquid that could host Majorana Fermions. Such non-Abelian anyons could revolutionize quantum computing if properly implemented to overcome decoherence. A 3d 7 electronic configuration, like Co 2+ , has been explored by theory and experimental work to design Kitaev materials. Here, in this study, we report the synthesis of a new cobaltate honeycomb material KCoAsO 4 . The compound is synthesized through a low-temperature solution route and crystallized in space group R¯3 with lattice parameters a = 5.0394(1) and c = 28.6790(1) as determined by neutron powder diffraction. The crystal structure follows motifs similar to those of the honeycomb compound BaCo2(AsO 4 ) 2 but presents differing magnetic behavior. Magnetization/heat capacity measurements on the powder show antiferromagnetic transition T N = 14 K. Two lower-temperature transitions are present in susceptibility at low field that resemble spin reorientations. Magnetization data as a function of field have curvature indicative of metamagnetic behavior below the magnetic ordering temperature, with the magnetic ordering suppressed upon application of a higher magnetic field. Computational studies suggest the presence of a weak nearest-neighbor Kitaev term, K 1 , consistent with related honeycomb cobaltates. Together, the data suggest that this material should present a new platform for developing Kitaev quantum spin liquids.

Magnetic dilution in the triangular lattice antiferromagnet NaYb 1−𝑥 ⁢Lu 𝑥 ⁢O 2

The delafossitelike compound NaYbO 2 hosts a triangular lattice of Yb 3+ moments and is a promising candidate for the realization of a quantum spin liquid ground state—an exotic, quantum-disordered magnetic phase featuring long-range entanglement of spins. Tuning this system away from this quantum-disordered regime toward classical order or spin freezing is a powerful approach to shed light on the nature of the parent ground state. Here we leverage the substitution of nonmagnetic Lu 3+ onto the Yb 3+ sites to study the effects of magnetic disorder in NaYbO 2 using low-temperature ac susceptibility, heat capacity, and muon spin relaxation (𝜇⁢SR) measurements. Here, our 𝜇⁢SR measurements reveal resilient, correlated magnetic fluctuations that persist to at least 15% dilution, precluding conventional spin freezing and magnetic inhomogeneity. Heat capacity and magnetic susceptibility resolve a rapid suppression of the field-induced “up-up-down” magnetic order upon dilution and a crossover in the power-law behavior of the low-temperature magnetic excitations associated with the zero-field quantum disordered ground state. Taken together, these results support the notion of a robust network of entangled moments in NaYbO 2 and provide experimental validation of several models of a Heisenberg triangular lattice antiferromagnet in the presence of disorder.
