TA-03-0016 Ion Beam Facility: This structure is 70 years old and has been vacant since 1994 and was excessed in 1999. The Ion Beam Facility (IBF) was built in 1953 to support essential post-World War II scientific research and houses LANL's original vertical and tandem Van de Graaff accelerators. The vertical Van de Graaff accelerator was built under the direction of Joseph McKibben from 1948 to 1952 and was used for applied nuclear physics experiments. The Ion Beam facility is considered by NNSA as one of its highest risk process contaminated facilities within the complex. Ion Beam is a radiological facility adjacent to the LANL Occupational Medicine Facility on the south side of TA-3, the most populated technical area at LANL. It poses an undesirable fire risk, especially given its close location to a rugged wooded canyon and difficulties in fighting a wildland fire in such a location. Demolition of this structure will provide a constructable site for critical mission radiological laboratory spaces.
The scientifically challenging problem of catalytically reducing oxyanions was explored and presented great opportunities in terms of the environment, economics and energy self-sufficiency. Oxyanions are pervasive as they are found in many areas of technology, all forms of life, in minerals, and as synthetic materials. Given their ubiquity, the contamination of inorganic oxyanions in drinking water is a national problem as 26 states and Puerto Rico have reported high concentrations of these harmful pollutants. The goals achieved by this research was to catalytically reduce oxyanions utilizing sustainable earth abundant catalysts featuring bio-inspired ligands. This worked allowed us to gain fundamental insights into what dictates the reduction/reactivity for these anions.

LPS experiments are not benchmarks but can provide valuable input. 22/1/24 LPS experiments are not benchmarks but can provide valuable input. LPS (run by Denise) help validate nuclear data up to 15 MeV. They test scattering and fission data. They have incomplete uncertainties from 2-8%. I take note when: (1) I see C/E differences above the peak and before late times => 20%. (2) Simulated results between libraries change by => 20% without a good explanation.

For heat pipe cooled microreactor development, it is essential to understand the characteristics of heat pipes and how they function under a wide range of operating conditions. Modeling the startup and shutdown of heat pipe cooled microreactors has been a major challenge for the modeling code. Validating these parameters within the code is key for the development and licensing of heat pipe cooled microreactor designs. Idaho National Laboratory (INL) has completed testing on power transients of a heat pipe with a range of operating conditions. The resulting temperature profiles from this testing can be utilized to aid in the validation of the startup and shutdown portions of the heat pipe modeling code.

For heat-pipe cooled microreactor development, it is essential to understand the characteristics of heat pipes and how they function under a wide range of operating conditions. An important process for heat-pipe cooled microreactor development is the passive heat removal and how the performance may change over long periods of time. Increased experimental data provides additional information to assess the operational lifetime of alkali metal heat pipes. Idaho National Laboratory has completed testing over a long duration of a high-performance sodium filled heat pipe while monitoring axial temperature profile, power supplied by the heaters, and heat removed by a gas-gap calorimeter. The results from this testing can aid in heat pipe validation efforts.
