Constant-voltage drive current-steering switch

Two-element voltage control system regulates a magnetic switch consisting of dual ferrite-core shift registers. The system has a magnetic, two-core-per-bit, voltage-controlled shift register.

Design, fabrication, testing, and delivery of improved beam steering devices

The development, manufacture, and testing of an optical steerer intended for use in spaceborne optical radar systems are described. Included are design principles and design modifications made to harden the device against launch and space environments, the quality program and procedures developed to insure consistent product quality throughout the manufacturing phase, and engineering qualification model testing and evaluation. The delivered hardware design is considered conditionally qualified pending action on further recommended design modifications.

Amplitude-steered, pseudophased antenna array

Beam may be smoothly scanned around ring array without instantaneous phase transitions while maintaining constant radiated power by gradually transferring power from receding element to element next to leading edge of driven segment, and by accomplishing antenna element switching during intervals when no power is being applied to elements being switched.

Pioneer Venus: Report of a study by the Science Steering Group, June 1972

The 1976/77 multiple probe mission of the Pioneer Venus spacecraft is discussed, along with the 1978 and 1980 missions. Various questions about Venus are answered; velocities and temperatures expected in the atmosphere, atmospheric chemistry, magnetic measurements, and model atmospheres are included.

Multiple beam communicating satellites with remote beam steering and beam shaping

Multiple beam phased arrays are shown to enhance the performance of several anticipated geostationary communications satellite programs because of the greater efficiency and flexibility of the phased array. It is shown that the efficiency of arrays can be significantly greater than corresponding multiple feed dishes and that the problems of crossover loss and performance degradation with parts failures are thereby avoided. On an open loop basis, it is shown that a multiple beam array can provide higher EIRP over a coverage area. On a closed loop basis, it is shown that an adaptive array can provide nulling of unwanted signals while simultaneously providing gain in the direction of a desired signal.

Effect of yaw angle on steering forces for the lunar roving vehicle wheel

A series of tests was conducted with a Lunar Roving Vehicle (LRV) wheel operating at yaw angles ranging from -5 to +90 deg. The load was varied from 42 to 82 lb (187 to 365 N), and the speed was varied from 3.5 to 10.0 ft/sec (1.07 to 3.05 m/sec). It was noted that speed had an effect on side thrust and rut depth. Side thrust, rut depth, and skid generally increased as the yaw angle increased. For the range of loads used, the effect of load on performance was not significant.

Crawler Transporter Steering and Jel Systems

The transporter weighing 2.8 million kilograms (6.3 million pounds) was used to lift a 5.7-million-kilogram (12.6-million-pound) combination of mobile launcher and space vehicle, transfer this load approximately 5.6 kilometers (3.5 miles) from its point of assembly, negotiate curves of 152-meter (500-foot) mean radius, climb a 5-percent grade while maintaining the 122-meter (400-foot) structure in a vertical position within 10 minutes of arc, and smoothly position this huge structure to within plus or minus 5.1 centimeters (plus or minus 2 inches) on support pedestals at the launch pad. The crawler-transporter is described in detail.

Computation and sensitivity considerations of the Ricatti equation in spacecraft CMG steering laws

The steady-state matrix Ricatti equation is studied with respect to sensitivity and computational burden for a linear regulator controller in spacecraft. The class of systems studied use control moment gyros (CMGs) as the torque driver, assuming that the CMGs are free of gimbal stops. Different solution techniques are evaluated relative to computation time and accuracy to determine which solution method is most acceptable with respect to the prescribed requirements. It is shown that it is not feasible to eliminate off-diagonal Ricatti equation terms in the relevent updata equation due to their high sensitivity, that Potter's algebraic technique requires the least computation time of the methods studied, and that the simple Euler method yields the best results when accuracy and computation time are equally weighted. If an optimal linear regulator formulation is employed, a full Ricatti equation solution of n(n + 1)2 elements of the symmetric positive definite gain matrix which is the solution to the matrix Ricatti equation must be computed at each update cycle.

Performance interface document for users of Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System (TDRSS) electromechanically steered antenna systems (EMSAS)

Satellites that use the NASA Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System (TDRSS) require antennas that are crucial for performing and achieving reliable TDRSS link performance at the desired data rate. Technical guidelines are presented to assist the prospective TDRSS medium-and high-data rate user in selecting and procuring a viable, steerable high-gain antenna system. Topics addressed include the antenna gain/transmitter power/data rate relationship; Earth power flux-density limitations; electromechanical requirements dictated by the small beam widths, desired angular coverage, and minimal torque disturbance to the spacecraft; weight and moment considerations; mechanical, electrical and thermal interfaces; design lifetime failure modes; and handling and storage. Proven designs are cited and space-qualified assemblies and components are identified.

Cross-Array Antenna With Switched Steering

Selected phase shifting of feeds to antenna elements aims antenna beam. Antenna for Space Shuttle controlled in two dimensions by double-pole, double-throw switches antenna feeds. Switches control phasing of antenna elements by transposing transmission-line delay elements between feeds to pairs of elements located on opposite sides of antenna. Same principles can be applied to antennas with additional elements along each axis.
