Low RF Loss DC Conductive Ceramic for High Power Input Coupler Windows for SRF Cavities

Euclid Techlabs, LLC is developing a low RF loss/DC conductive MgTi ceramics for high power input coupler windows for SRF cavities, under DOE SBIR phase II grant DE-SC0017150. JLab was subcontracted to: fabricate two 500 kW capable pre-stressed coaxial windows; provide an RF testing fixture, and test the window with low power and high power RF. This collaboration helped to develop a better material for high power RF windows, with low RF loss and less prone to arcing, with the potential to improve the state of the art high power RF window performance.

Results from Extended Range SRF Cavity Tuner Tests for LCLS-II HE

The LCLS-II HE superconducting linac can produce multi-energy beams by supporting multiple undulator lines simultaneously. This could be achieved by using the cavity SRF tuner in the off-frequency detune mode. This off-frequency operation method was tested in 8 cryomodules at Fermilab at 2 K. In all tests, the tuners achieved a frequency shift of -565±80 kHz. This study will discuss cavity frequency during each step as it is being assembled in the cryomodule string and finally when it is being tested at 2 K. Tracking the cavity frequency helped enable the tuners to reach this large frequency shift. The specific procedures of tuner setting during assembly will be presented

Development of a Half-Meter Scale Traveling-Wave (TW) SRF Cavity

While a demonstration of TW resonance excitation in the 3-cell structure in 2K liquid helium had been prepared and carried out at Fermilab in collaboration with Euclid Techlabs, the RF design process of 0.5~1 meter scale TW cavity was begun at Fermilab as the next step of TW development towards an accelerator-scale one. Considering the physical dimensions of existing SRF facilities (for fabrication, processing, and cryogenic testing), Fermilab has proposed a half-meter scale TW RF design consisting of a 7-cell structure and a power feedback waveguide (WG) loop. The WG loop design includes the new RF configurations for TW resonance control during a high-power operation. 1-year US-Japan collaboration program focused on EBW optimization for the TW shape iris joint within the narrow gap was awarded and the efforts has been made by Fermilab, Jlab, and KEK. 1-year LDRD program of Fermilab is awarded recently to fabricate a low-cost mockup of the WG loop with new RF configurations and validate them. Here we will present a preliminary 7-cell TW RF design and will report the progress and challenges through the programs awarded.

RF and Mechanical Design of a 915 MHz SRF Cavity for Conduction-Cooled Cryomodules

Conduction-cooled SRF niobium cavities are being developed for use in compact, continuous-wave electron linear accelerators for a variety of industrial applications. A 915 MHz two-cell cavity has been designed to achieve an energy gain of 3.5 MeV. The design of the cell shape aims at minimizing the peak surface magnetic field. Field flatness is achieved by adjusting the length of the outer end half-cells. The higher-order mode analysis shows that absorbers are not required for a moderate beam current of 5 mA. One of the beam tubes has two side-ports for insertion of coaxial fundamental power couplers. The mechanical design and analysis were done to maintain a stress near or less than 15.5 MPa for all anticipated loading conditions. This is half the measured yield strength and is to provide relief from creep when cavity is evacuated and stored with outside atmospheric pressure.

591 MHz SRF Cavity Design for the EIC ESR

The Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) is a next generation particle accelerator to be built at Brookhaven National Laboratory, in partnership with Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. The Electron Storage Ring (ESR) of RIC requires a 10 MW RF storage system to restore beam power lost by a 2.5 A electron beam. The RF system will use 18 single-cell 591 MHz Superconducting RF (SRF) cavities. Effective damping of higher-order-modes (HOMs) is critical to ensure beam stability. This paper presents the design of the single-cell 591 MHz cavity, including cavity geometry optimization, multipacting evaluation, and HOM damping analysis.

Detection of high-frequency gravitational waves using SRF cavities

Today, apart from some isolated R\&D efforts, there are no GW experiments, yet which explore a large part of the vast frequency range above the LIGO/Virgo band. It is planned to establish an experiment at DESY and Fermilab to search for high-frequency GWs in the frequency range of 10\,kHz to 100\,MHz. The basic idea is to use superconducting radiofrequency (SRF) cavities to detect tiny harmonic deformations induced by GWs which change the boundary conditions of the oscillating electromagnetic field. This paper summarizes the challenging environmental boundary requirements, and the R\&D to operate a cavity using a LLRF system which pushes beyond state-of-the-art accuracy and resolutions and a seismic noise mitigated cryostat at 1.8\,K. The focus of this paper is the warm and cold commissioning of a prototype cavity, built 20 years ago during the MAGO collaboration, and its first measurement in our collaborative research project.

SRF cavities and Superconducting qubits for Gravitational Waves and Dark Photons detection

The report is a short review which focuses on the employment of a Superconducting Radio Frequency (SRF) cavity for detection of Gravitational Waves (GWs). This first part is inspired by the works of Berlin’s group. In the second part, we analyze also the idea to use a cavity-qubit system for the GWs detection and the Dark Photons (DPs) detection. In this case, the starting point is the work of Dixit’s group which will be extended for SQMS cavities.

Preparation for DM searches with high Q SRF cavities

This work focuses on the preparatory for two dark matter searches based on high Q SRF cavities. In the context of the SERAPH experiment I participated to experimental work of characterizing the cavity at mK temperature and subsequently analyzed the data collected. For the SHADE experiment, I worked on the preparation of the data analysis starting from the collection of simulated data and built a flexible framework to analyze them. The goal of this report is to present my contribution to these two experiments that are being investigated at Fermilab by the Physics Sensing group at SQMS.

The SERAPH (SupERconducting Axion and Paraphoton Haloscope) experiment is a family of superconducting haloscopes being developed by the Superconducting Quantum Materials and Systems (SQMS) Center to search for wavelike dark matter. This presentation will focus on preliminary results from our dark photon dark matter search using a widely-tunable SRF cavity operating between 4-7 GHz, nicknamed the “plunger cavity.” I will present the cavity design and characterization, analyze the impact of microphonics on system performance and haloscope sensitivity, and describe our tuning methodology for this Q~10^8 cavity. The presentation will cover our haloscope analysis approach and discuss sensitivity limits achieved within this frequency range. Finally, I will outline lessons learned from this first search, implications for future axion searches, and proposed improvements for subsequent SERAPH experiments.

Quantum-Enhanced Dark-Matter Sensing with Large Photon Number Fock States in a High-Q SRF Cavity

Wave-like dark matter candidates such as axions or dark photons in the microwave frequency range can be probed using resonant superconducting cavities. We demonstrate a quantum-enhanced sensing approach based on a multimode, high-Q superconducting RF (SRF) cavity, where a large Fock state is prepared in the storage mode via sideband transitions mediated by a transmon ancilla and a measurement-based feedforward protocol, achieving high-fidelity Fock states [1]. The prepared |n⟩ state induces stimulated emission from the dark-matter field, providing an (n + 1) enhancement in transition probability and proportional boost in signal rate [2]. A secondary cavity mode functions as an in-situ reference to calibrate noise. We present the control sequence, noise-referencing strategy, and projected sensitivity improvements for axion and dark-photon detection. This multimode architecture combines large Fock state preparation with noise calibration, offering a practical path to increased scan rate in cavity-based dark-matter searches.

PIP-II SRF Couplers Fabrication Status and Addressing Ceramic Yield Challenges

The PIP-II project requires reliable SRF couplers to deliver high RF power to the cavities. This talk presents the current status of coupler fabrication, including progress on procurement, assembly, and testing. In particular, it focuses on the challenges encountered with ceramic window production, where limited yield has become a concern. Observed issues and inspection results will be discussed, together with the actions taken to improve quality and consistency. The path forward, including ongoing work with vendors and process adjustments, will also be outlined.

In situ SRF cavity processing using optical ionization of gases

A system and method for the in situ processing of internal SRF cavity surfaces to reduce field emission and improve maximum gradient. An electromagnetic radiation source is introduced in the bore of a superconducting cavity to enhance ionization or dissociation of gases which then remove contaminants from the surface of the cavity, either through direct surface bombardment, chemical reaction or through the production of radiation which interacts with the contaminants. An RF or low frequency electromagnetic field may be established in the cavity which further enhances the ionization or dissociation process and may cause the ions to bombard sites with enhanced electric fields. The invention removes the requirement that the RF field be sufficient by itself to ionize gas in the cavity.

The Role of Oxygen Concentration in Enabling High Gradients in Niobium SRF Cavities

We studied the role of O concentration with depth in the performance of Nb SRF cavities. An ensemble of electropolished 1.3 GHz cavities, which initially showed high field Q-slope (HFQS), was subjected to sequential testing and treatment with in-situ low temperature baking at various temperatures. We find that increasing the bake duration causes (i) an increase in the onset of HFQS until it is absent up to quench (ii) a non-monotonic relationship with the quench field (iii) an evolution of the RBCS toward a non-equilibrium behavior that drives anti-Q slope. Our data is qualitatively explained by assuming an O diffusion model and suggests that the mitigation of HFQS that arises from 120 C in-situ LTB is mediated by the diffusion of O from the native oxide which prevents the precipitation of proximity-coupled Nb nano-hydrides, in turn enabling higher quench fields. The decrease in quench field for cavities in which O has been diffused >90 nm from the RF surface may be due to a reduction of the field limit in the SS bilayer structure. We also suggest that the evolution of the RBCS occurs due to the absence of proximity coupled inclusions, bringing about non-equilibrium effects.

Plasma Processing for In-Situ Field Emission Mitigation of Superconducting Radiofrequency (SRF) Cryomodules

Field emission (FE) is one of the main limiting factors of superconducting radio-frequency (SRF) cavities operating in accelerators and it occurs whenever contaminants, like dust, metal flakes or even absorbates, are present on the surface of the cavity high electric field region. Field emission reduces the maximum achievable accelerating field and generates free electrons that may interact with the beam, damage or activate the beamline. One practical method that can be used to mitigate this problem is in-situ plasma cleaning, or plasma processing. The development of a processing that can be applied in-situ is extremely advantageous, since it enables the recovery of the cryomodule performance without the need of disassembling the whole cryomodule, which is an extremely expensive and time-consuming process. On the other hand, plasma processing only requires the cryomodule warm-up to room-temperature and the subsequent processing of the contaminated cavities. The entire process is reasonably quick and involves a limited number of personnel. For these reasons we would like to advocate for continuing to invest in the R&D of plasma processing to optimize its applicability in cryomodules and for extending the technique to other frequency ranges and cavities geometries.

Study on Electropolishing Conditions for 650 MHz Niobium SRF Cavity

The PIP II linear accelerator includes different types of niobium SRF cavities including 650 MHz elliptical low (0.61) and high (0.92) beta cavities. The elliptical cavity surface is processed with the electropolishing method. The elliptical cavities especially the low-$\beta$ 650 MHz cavities showed a rough equator surface after the EP was per-formed with the standard EP conditions. This work was focused to study the effect of different EP parameters, including cathode surface area, temperature and voltage, and optimize them to improve the cavity surface.

Niobium to Titanium Electron Beam Welding for SRF Cavities

Titanium and niobium are the main materials used for the fabrication of Superconducting Radio Frequency (SRF) cavities. These two metals are usually joined , using various welding techniques, using a third material in between. This contribution focuses on the development of an innovative electron beam welding technique capable of producing a strong bond between these two different materials. Several samples are produced and tested to assess the mechanical strength at room and cryogenic temperature as well as the composition of the resulting welded joint. Also, the first units of the Single Spoke Resonator type 2 (SSR2) cavities for the Proton Improvement Plan-II (PIP-II [1]) have been fabricated joining directly various grades of titanium to niobium and results gathered through the fabrication will be reported.
