Superconducting platinum silicide analyzed by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy

Platinum silicide has garnered increased attention due to its potential applications as a superconductor within silicon technology. In this work, we characterize a superconducting PtSi film using x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy with an Al K α excitation source. Survey spectra, Pt 5s, Pt 4f, Pt 4d, Pt 4p, Pt 4s, Si 2p, Si 2s, O 1s core levels, and the valence band spectrum were measured. In conclusion, this collection of high-quality core level spectra of a superconducting PtSi film provide reference data for this material, which often has a minimal native silicon oxide layer and overlapping Si and Pt core level peaks.

Electrical power generation from moderate-temperature radiative thermal sources

Moderate-temperature thermal sources (100° to 400°C) which radiate waste heat are often the by-product of mechanical work, chemical or nuclear reactions, or information processing. We demonstrate conversion of thermal radiation into electrical power using a bipolar grating-coupled complementary metal-oxide-silicon (CMOS) tunnel diode. A two-step photon-assisted tunneling charge pumping mechanism results in separation of charge carriers in pn-junction wells leading to a large open-circuit voltage developed across a load. Electrical power generation from a broadband blackbody thermal source has been experimentally demonstrated with converted power densities of 27 to 61 microwatts per square centimeter for thermal sources between 250° and 400°C. Scalable, efficient conversion of radiated waste heat into electrical power can be used to reduce energy consumption or to power electronics and sensors.

Wide bandgap photoconductor (SiC:V)-based optically addressed light valve for high fluence operation

Optically addressable light valves based on wide bandgap 4H- and 6H-SiC as photoconductors were designed to withstand higher operational laser fluences than the state of-the-art bismuth silicon oxide (BSO; Bi 12 SiO 20 ) based devices. Vanadium-doped SiC was selected as the photoconductors due to their reasonable photoresponsivity while many fold improvement in laser induced damage threshold as compared to BSO. The laser induced damage threshold values of the materials were measured after exposing ~ 200 sites on the samples to increasing levels of fluence of a gaussian pulsed Nd: YAG laser system (1064 nm) with a 5 Hz repetition rate. The measured damage threshold values for BSO, 4H- and 6H-SiC were 0.4 J/cm 2 , 1.75 J/cm 2 and 1.8 J/cm 2 , respectively. Photoconductive switches based on 4H and 6H-SiC samples were characterized at wavelengths of 380 nm, 405 nm, and 447 nm. The peak photoresponsivity values of the 4H- and 6H-SiC materials were measured to be under 380 nm and 405 nm, respectively. The photoconductor was bonded to a BK7 optical window with 5 μm diameter microspheres as spacers. A twisted nematic type E7 liquid crystal (LC) was filled in the 5 μm gap in a vacuum chamber. The desired alignment of the liquid crystal was achieved by mutually orthogonal orientation of LC alignment layers on the two mating faces (SiC and BK7). The fabricated devices were modulated using address beams of wavelengths 380 nm, 405 nm, and 447 nm. In conclusion, required transmission levels of > 90% was achieved for the fabricated OALVs for a sinusoidal voltage waveform that meets the lifetime requirement of the device.

Internship Experience

I started my internship in January 2022 but the research on measuring dispersion and loss of 355nm light from a silicon oxide waveguide began in August 2022 which will be the focus of this paper. The motivation of this project is to determine whether it is possible to use pulsed 355nm light in an integrated waveguide within an ion trap chip. To begin this project, light from the 355nm Coherent Paladin laser was coupled into a fiber which will be referred to as the “source fiber.” After coupling into a fiber, loss and dispersion measurements could be performed as this fiber was used to deliver light to each of the experiments which will be covered in detail in the following paragraphs.

Characterization and High Temperature Electrical Properties of Brazed Joints of La0.8Sr0.2CrO3 with Nickel and Nickel Alloys

This study investigates the high-temperature electrical properties and microstructural characteristics of brazed joints combining La₀.₈Sr₀.₂CrO₃ (LSC) with nickel and nickel-based alloys. Using nickel-based filler metals (NB LM and NB 130), the joints were tested in controlled atmospheres (95% N₂ and 5% H₂). Electrical resistivity was analyzed across a range of temperatures (25–727°C), and contact resistance was evaluated using a composite model. Results indicate that joint resistance decreases with increasing temperature, with optimal brazing achieved at 1160°C. Diffusion processes involving Si, Ni, O, and Sr were identified, with silicon oxide formation contributing to joint bonding.

Microtron Data Log

The Microtron at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is a versatile electron accelerator originally designed for medical therapy. Since 2001, it has been used for non-destructive radiographic imaging and research and development applications. Operating at four different energy levels—6, 10, 15, and 20 MeV—the Microtron produces dose rates of approximately 780, 1800, 2700, and 2800 R/min at a distance of one meter from the source, respectively. This high-energy X-ray source enables detailed internal examination of dense and thick objects without causing damage, making it invaluable for various scientific and industrial applications. For instance, LANL’s Microtron has been utilized to study the performance of large-panel cerium-doped lutetium yttrium silicon oxide (LYSO) scintillators, which are essential components in advanced imaging systems.

On the adsorption and reactivity of element 114, flerovium

Flerovium (Fl, element 114) is the heaviest element chemically studied so far. To date, its interaction with gold was investigated in two gas-solid chromatography experiments, which reported two different types of interaction, however, each based on the level of a few registered atoms only. Whereas noble-gas-like properties were suggested from the first experiment, the second one pointed at a volatile-metal-like character. Here, we present further experimental data on adsorption studies of Fl on silicon oxide and gold surfaces, accounting for the inhomogeneous nature of the surface, as it was used in the experiment and analyzed as part of the reported studies. We confirm that Fl is highly volatile and the least reactive member of group 14. Our experimental observations suggest that Fl exhibits lower reactivity towards Au than the volatile metal Hg, but higher reactivity than the noble gas Rn.

Using Vertically Aligned Carbon Nanofiber Arrays on Rigid or Flexible Substrates for Delivery of Biomolecules and Dyes to Plants

The delivery of biomolecules and impermeable dyes to intact plants is a major challenge. Nanomaterials are up-and-coming tools for the delivery of DNA to plants. As exciting as these new tools are, they have yet to be widely applied. Nanomaterials fabricated on rigid substrate (backing) are particularly difficult to successfully apply to curved plant structures. This study describes the process for microfabricating vertically aligned carbon nanofiber arrays and transferring them from a rigid to a flexible substrate. We detail and demonstrate how these fibers (on either rigid or flexible substrates) can be used for transient transformation or dye (e.g., fluorescein) delivery to plants. We show how VACNFs can be transferred from rigid silicon substrate to a flexible SU-8 epoxy substrate to form flexible VACNF arrays. Further, to overcome the hydrophobic nature of SU-8, fibers in the flexible film were coated with a thin silicon oxide layer (2-3 nm). To use these fibers for delivery to curved plant organs, we deposit a 1 µL droplet of dye or DNA solution on the fiber side of VACNF films, wait 10 min, place the films on the plant organ and employ a swab with a rolling motion to drive fibers into plant cells. With this method, we have achieved dye and DNA delivery in plant organs with curved surfaces.
