Sm-Nd constraints on early lunar differentiation and the evolution of KREEP

The internal Sm-Nd systematics of lunar KREEP basalt 15386 and its implications for the evolutionary history of KREEP on the moon are reported. The age of the 15386 rocklet indicated by the measured Sm-Nd mineral isochron is consistent with the reported Rb-Sr and (Ar-39)-(Ar-40) ages of other KREEP-rich samples, which is interpreted as the time 15386 crystallized from a liquid on or near the lunar surface. This suggests that the eruption of these incompatible element-rich liquids was related to deep impact events during the final bombardment phase of the surface of the moon. It is concluded that the extremely narrow spread of Sm-Nd model ages for these samples around 4.36 AE, and the compatibility of this age with that indicated by the U-Pb and Rb-Sr systems, indicate that the source of later KREEP volcanism was produced in the closing stages of an early global scale lunar differentiation episode.

Analysis of backward error recovery for concurrent processes with recovery blocks

Three different methods of implementing recovery blocks (RB's). These are the asynchronous, synchronous, and the pseudo recovery point implementations. Pseudo recovery points so that unbounded rollback may be avoided while maintaining process autonomy are proposed. Probabilistic models for analyzing these three methods under standard assumptions in computer performance analysis, i.e., exponential distributions for related random variables were developed. The interval between two successive recovery lines for asynchronous RB's mean loss in computation power for the synchronized method, and additional overhead and rollback distance in case PRP's are used were estimated.

Chronology and petrogenesis of young achondrites, Shergotty, Zagami, and ALHA77005 - Late magmatism on a geologically active planet

Three achondrites were examined for chronology, petrogenesis, and relationships among the shergotites. Isotopic and trace elements analyses were carried out through neutron activation and mass spectrometry on Shergotty, Zagami, and ALHA77005 samples. Attention was given the Rb-Sr, Sm-Nd, and the Ar-39/Ar-40 ages in the samples. Evidence was detected for a shock metamorphism and a younger age of the meteorites than with most other achondrites. Depletions of the rare-earth elements were observed in Shergotty and Zagami, and to a more pronounced degree in ALHA77005. The Rb-Sr internal isochrons for all three meteorites were about 180 Myr, while the Ar-39/Ar-40 plateau ages of Shergotty and Zagami maskelynite were determined at 250-260 Myr. No precise identification of the crystallization ages was found. It is suggested that the achondrites originated in a parent body which experienced at least two epochs of sustained melting.

Chemical and isotopic study of extraterrestrial particles from the ocean floor

An Rb-Sr isotopic analysis of deep-sea spherules (DSS) from the Pacific, vesicular iridium-rich glassy objects (VIRGO) from an Antarctic-Ocean diatomaceous-ooze core, and equigranular objects (EGO) associated with or included in VIRGO, is reported. The techniques of sample collection, preparation, chemical analysis, and isotopic analysis (by mass spectrometry) are described in detail, and the results are presented in tables. The Sr-87/Sr-86 determination has a precision of 1-2 percent in microsamples of 2-8 x 10 to the 11th Sr atoms. The DSS are found to have Sr concentrations and Sr-87/Sr-86 (0.730-0.757) typical of chondritic meteorites. Extreme Rb depletion is attributed to volatization during meteoroid atmospheric heating. The VIRGO, while having major-element compositions like that of meteorites and high Ir levels suggesting extraterrestrial origin, have Sr-87/Sr-86 = 0.703-0.705; and the associated EGO has Sr-87/Sr-86 = 0.701 + or - 0.001, typical of MORB or basaltic achondrites. Hence their extraterrestrial origin is not proved, and some lithic component other than the EGO must be the source of the high Ir concentration.

Diode laser 87Rb optical pumping in an evacuated wall-coated cell

The evacuated wall coated sealed cell coupled with diode laser optical pumping offers a number of attractive potential advantages for use in Rb or Cs atomic frequency standards. An investigation of systematic effects is required to explore possible limitations of the technique. The use of diode laser optical pumping of 87 Rb in an evacuated wall coated sealed cell is presented. Experimental results/discussion to be presented include the signal strength and line broadening of the 0 - 0 hyperfine resonance as a function of light intensity for the D1 optical transitions (F - F prime) - (2 1 prime) and (2 - 2 prime), shift of the 0 - 0 hyperfine frequency as a function of laser intensity and de-tuning from optical resonance, and diode laser frequency stabilization techniques.

Rubidium and cesium frequency standards status and performance on the GPS program

The on-oribt operational performance of the frequency standards on the Global Positioning System (GPS) 1 to 10 NAVSTAR satellites are discussed. The history of the Rb frequency standards showing the improvements incorporated at various stages of the program and the corresponding results are presented. Also presented is the operational history of the NAVSTAR cesium frequency standards. The frequency standards configuration data presented covers the chronology of events from the concept validation satellites, NAVSTAR 1 to 10, starting in 1978 to the present, including the configurations of clocks to be used on the GPS Production Program. Data are presented showing the results of long-term laboratory testing of a production Rb frequency standard with the necessary data taken to calculate Delta F, drift, time error, and Allan variance.

The system design of a rubidium maser frequency standard

The Rubidium Maser Frequency Standard is a precision frequency source with excellent short-term stability. A type PBR-II Rb maser frequency standard was developed by the Beijing Institute of Radio Metrology and Measurement (BIRMM). The time-domain frequency stability (two-sample variance) of this frequency standard is less than 1/5 times 10 to the 13th power for t=10ms yields 1.0s, fh=1.0 KHz. Two PBR-II frequency standards were used as reference frequency sources in a frequency stability measurement system. Some important system characteristics for the PBR-II Rb maser frequency standard such as phase noise and frequency stability transfer characteristics are discussed. Furthermore, the design of the frequency standard for optimum frequency stability of the output signal; the choice of a voltage controlled crystal oscillator for the frequency standard; the design of the phase-locked loop; and the frequency stability test results on the PBR-II are discussed.

Mobile trace element contents in Jilin chondrite

A determination is conducted of ppm-ppt levels of Co, Se, Ga, Rb, Cs, Te, Bi, Ag, In, Tl, Zn and Cd (arranged empirically in order of increasing mobility at 1000 C) by radiochemical neutron activation analysis in eight Jilin samples of known Ar-40 content and a large vein from one of these. The trace element contents of the vein do not differ markedly from those of Jilin whole-rock samples. Only Rb correlates with Ar-40, possibly due to chance. All elements but Cd are present at levels similar to thdse in H4-6 chondrites with long K/Ar age (i.e., presumably mildly shocked). These levels are low relative to those in analogous L4-6 chondrites suggesting that H chondrites formed and/or evolved under higher pre-shock temperatures than did mildly shocked L chondrites. Time-temperature conditions during shock-loading of Jilin parent material were mild relative to those in strongly shocked L chondrites, being sufficient at most only to mobilize Cd.

Age of the Mulcahy Lake intrusion, northwest Ontario, and implications for the evolution of greenstone-granite terrains

An investigation of zircon data from the Mulcahy Lake gabbro, a 63 sq km layered mafic intrusion in the Wabigoon subprovince of Ontario, which show that the gabbro crystallized at 2733.2 +1.0, -0.9 Ma, is considered. It is shown that the gabbro intrudes tholeiites of the Crow Lake-Savant Lake greenstone belt. Whole rock samples and mineral separates from the Mulcahy Lake intrusion are dated by Rb-Sr, Sm-Nd, and Ar-30-Ar-40 techniques. Disturbances in the system are revealed by the Rb-Sr data and an initial Sr ratio of 0.7007 for an age of 2733 Ma is indicated by samples with low Rb/Sr ratios. The age determined for the Sm-Nd data is 2744 + or 55 Ma with an epsilon Nd value of +2.6 + or - 1.2 which indicates a source region depleted in a light rare earth element. Primary hornblende is analyzed for Ar-40/Ar-39 and an age of 2703 + or - 20 is obtained. Some implications for the development of greenstone-granite belts are discussed.

The Yilgarn Craton western Australia: A tectonic synthesis

The Yilgarn Craton in Western Australia is one of the larger contiguous preserved Archaean crustal fragments, with an area of about 650,000 square kilometres. Of this, by area, about 70% is granitoid and 30% greenstone. The Craton is defined by the Darling Fault on its western margin, by Proterozoic deformation belts on its southern and northwestern margins, and by unconformable younger sediments on its eastern and northeastern margins. A regional geotectonic synthesis at a scale of 1:500,000 is being prepared. This is based largely upon the 1:250,000 scale mapping of the Geological Survey of Western Australia together with interpretation using geophysical data, mainly airborne magnetic surveys. On a regional basis the granitoids are classied as pre-, syn- and post-tectonic with respect to greenstone belt deformation. The post-tectonic granitoids yield Rb-Sr isochrons of about 2.6 b.y., close to Rb-Sr ages for the greenstones themselves which are up to about 2.8 b.y. old, although data for the latter is sparse. Contacts between earlier granitoids and greenstones which are not obscured by the post-tectonic granitoids are most commonly tectonic contacts, intensely deformed and with mylonitic fabrics. The general concensus however is that there is a pre-tectonic, pre-greenhouse sialic gneiss preserved in places. A discussion follows.

Phylogenetic origins of the plant mitochondrion based on a comparative analysis of 5S ribosomal RNA sequences

The complete nucleotide sequences of 5S ribosomal RNAs from Rhodocyclus gelatinosa, Rhodobacter sphaeroides, and Pseudomonas cepacia were determined. Comparisons of these 5S RNA sequences show that rather than being phylogenetically related to one another, the two photosynthetic bacterial 5S RNAs share more sequence and signature homology with the RNAs of two nonphotosynthetic strains. Rhodobacter sphaeroides is specifically related to Paracoccus denitrificans and Rc. gelatinosa is related to Ps. cepacia. These results support earlier 16S ribosomal RNA studies and add two important groups to the 5S RNA data base. Unique 5S RNA structural features previously found in P. denitrificans are present also in the 5S RNA of Rb. sphaeroides; these provide the basis for subdivisional signatures. The immediate consequence of obtaining these new sequences is that it is possible to clarify the phylogenetic origins of the plant mitochondrion. In particular, a close phylogenetic relationship is found between the plant mitochondria and members of the alpha subdivision of the purple photosynthetic bacteria, namely, Rb. sphaeroides, P. denitrificans, and Rhodospirillum rubrum.

A discussion of isotopic systematics and mineral zoning in the shergottites - Evidence for a 180 m.y. igneous crystallization age

The chronologies of the Shergotty, Zagami, ALHA 77005, and EETA 79001 meteorites were reexamined on the basis of shergottites' petrography and mineral chemistry data. Among the various isochrons, the concordant Rb-Sr (about 180 Myr) and U-Th-Pb (about 190 Myr) internal isochrons are interpreted as representing the time of igneous crystallization, while the Rb-Sr, Sm-Nd, and Pb-Pb whole-rock isochrons are interpreted as mixing lines, and are reasonably attributed to igneous processes such as wall-rock assimilation and magma mixing. If the approximated age of less than 200 Myr is correct, the shergottites represent the youngest known extraterrestrial basalts. This conclusion supports the hypothesis that the SNC meteorites are samples of Mars.

Mid to late proterozoic magmatism within Northeastern North America and its iplications for the growth of the continental crust

Recent studies of the mangerite-charnockite-alaskite suite exposed in the Adirondack Highlands strongly suggest that these rocks were emplaced under anorogenic, or mildly extensional, conditions. The characteristic signatures of the rocks are high (FeO/FeO+MgO) and (FeO/Fe2O3); mildly alkaline to subalkaline and metaluminous trends; high Ga/Al2O3; and within plate concentrations of Nb vs Y, Ta vs Yb, Rb vs (Y+Nb), and Rb vs (Yb+Ta). Evolved members of the series are low in CaO and MgO and high in alkalies and halogens. All of these properties are consistent with anorogenic magmatism comprising acidic crustal melts and mantle derived mafic additions to the crust. Major and minor element trends, as well as field evidence, strongly suggest that the anorogenic acidic suite is coeval, but not comagmatic, with closely associated anorthositic massifs. Present outcrop configurations are consistent with the evolution of the acidic and anorthositic rocks in zoned, bimodal magma chambers cored by the mafic constituents and overlain by explosive, caldera-type volcanism. Age determinations indicate that the emplacement of the anorthosite-charnockite suite extended over approximately 500 Ma in the Grenville and adjacent Nain, Provinces.

Geochronology of high-K aluminous mare basalt clasts from Apollo 14 breccia 14304

Two aluminous mare basalt clasts of high K abundances from Apollo 14 breccia 14304 (the 14304,127 and 14304,128 samples) were characterized with respect to the Rb and Sr concentrations and isotopic compositions, and the Rb-Sr, K-Ar, and Sm-Nd isotopic age determinations were carried out. The results suggest that these high-K basalts were melts derived from mantle material and that they have experienced about ten-fold Rb/Sr and K/La enrichments at approximately the time of crystallization.

Nd and Sr isotope systematics of river water suspended material - Implications for crustal evolution

Sm-Nd and Rb-Sr isotopic data on suspended material from rivers draining a variety of rock types and ages are presented. The bulk load of rivers and their source rocks are compared in terms of their isotopic characteristics and model ages. The Nd and Sr isotope systematics of the upper crust exposed to weathering are obtained along with the Nd model age distribution of the North American continental surface. The average Sm-Nd and Rb-Sr isotopic parameters for the upper continental crust today are refined.

River Valley pluton, Ontario - A late-Archean/early-Proterozoic anorthositic intrusion in the Grenville Province

This paper presents Nd, Sr, and Pb isotopic data indicating a late-Archean/early-Proterozoic age for the River Valley anorthositic pluton of the southwestern Grenville Province of Sudbury, Ontario. Pb-Pb isotopic data on 10 whole-rock samples ranging in composition from anorthosite to gabbro yield an age of 2560 + or - 155 Ma. The River Valley pluton is thus the oldest anorthositic intrusive yet recognized within the Grenville Province. The Sm-Nd isotopic system records an age of 2377 + or - 68 Ma. High Pb-208/Pb-204 of deformed samples relative to igneous-textured rocks implies Th introduction and/or U loss during metamorphism in the River Valley area. Rb-Sr data from igneous-textured and deformed samples and from mineral separates give an age of 2185 + or - 105 Ma, indicating substantial disturbance of the Rb-Sr isotopic system.

Theoretical model for a background noise limited laser-excited optical filter for doubled Nd lasers

A simple theoretical model for the calculation of the dependence of filter quantum efficiency versus laser pump power in an atomic Rb vapor laser-excited optical filter is reported. Calculations for Rb filter transitions that can be used to detect the practical and important frequency-doubled Nd lasers are presented. The results of these calculations show the filter's quantum efficiency versus the laser pump power. The required laser pump powers required range from 2.4 to 60 mW/sq cm of filter aperture.

Rubidium atomic frequency standards for GPS Block IIR

The Rubidium Atomic Frequency Standards (RAFS) were provided for the GPS Block IIR NAVSTAR satellites. These satellites will replenish and upgrade the space segment of the Global Positioning System in the mid 1990s. The GPS RAFS Rb clocks are the latest generation of the high-performance rubidium frequency standards. They offer an aging rate in the low pp 10(exp 14)/day range and a drift-corrected 1-day stability in the low pp 10(exp 14) range. The Block IIR version of these devices will have improved performance, higher reliability, smaller size, and greater radiation hardness. The GPS Block IIR atomic clocks have a natural frequency configuration whereby they output a frequency of about 13.4 MHz that is a submultiple of the atomic resonance of Rb (or Cs). The RAFS operates at a low, fixed C-field for increased stability. The GPS Block IIR RAFS design, including the changes and improvements made, and the test results obtained are described.
