Notes on Linear FM Chirp for Radar

One of the most iconic of radar waveforms is the Linear FM chirp. It is well-behaved and well-understood, and has become the gold standard against which other radar waveforms are measured. It has a number of desirable attributes, but is not without some issues. It may be processed by a number of techniques with many variations. Details of the Linear FM chirp are presented and discussed in this report.

Notes on Minimum Area for Radar Antenna

Perhaps no single radar component has a more profound effect on Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) performance than the antenna. Especially for spaceborne SAR, one particular common design constraint for the antenna is the minimum antenna area constraint. While useful, it relies on a number of assumptions and approximations that may not always be valid or applicable. Indeed, useful operational systems have been built and flown that do not strictly adhere to this constraint. A closer examination of this constraint yields insights into what the real limitations are, or might be.

Applications of Artificial Intelligence to Radar

In this report, we survey the current intersection between the fields of radar technology and artificial intelligence. Three main areas are highlighted - synthetic aperture radar automatic target detection, waveform optimization, and antenna design. Literature relevant to these applications and beyond are discussed and compiled in an annotated bibliography.

SAIL Radar b1 Data Processing: Corrections, Calibrations, and Processing Report

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) user facility deployed the second ARM Mobile Facility (AMF2) near Crested Butte, Colorado for the Surface Atmosphere Integrated Field Laboratory (SAIL) campaign. The SAIL campaign occurred from September 1, 2021, to June 15 2023. To study the water cycle in the East River Watershed, ARM deployed a vertically pointing Ka-band ARM Zenith radar (KAZR) and a scanning X-band precipitation radar managed by Colorado State University (CSU XPRECIP), as shown in Figure 1.

Notes on Synthetic Aperture Radar Image Quality

Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) creates an image of a target scene by coherently processing radar echo returns collected along a flightpath. The quality of the SAR image is inextricably linked to the utility of the image for exploitation supporting the task at hand. Aspects of quality include the fidelity with which it can render the scene being imaged, to include the system’s Impulse Response (IPR) and underlying noise levels/characteristics. Other factors also impact utility.

Orbiting Lunar Ground Penetrating Radar SAR Feasibility

This report aims to answer the question: “Will ground penetrating radar (GPR) be able to measure lunar subsurface resources from a 10km or above orbit?” Similarly, “Could a reasonable satellite-based system achieve the radar parameters required for lunar orbital GPR?” This report is not proposing a system but exploring if one is possible.

Radar - ANL Wind Profiler with RASS, Yakima - Raw Data

**Winds** A radar wind profiler measures the Doppler shift of electromagnetic energy scattered back from atmospheric turbulence and hydrometeors along 3-5 vertical and off-vertical point beam directions. Back-scattered signal strength and radial-component velocities are remotely sensed along all beam directions and combined to derive the horizontal wind field over the radar. These data typically are sampled and averaged hourly and usually have 6-m and/or 100-m vertical resolutions up to 4 km for the 915 MHz and 8 km for the 449 MHz systems. **Temperature** To measure atmospheric temperature, a radio acoustic sound system (RASS) is used in conjunction with the wind profile. These data typically are sampled and averaged for five minutes each hour and have a 60-m vertical resolution up to 1.5 km for the 915 MHz and 60-m up to 3.5k m for the 449 MHz.
