Particle Creation from Entanglement Entropy

We investigate how entanglement entropy can drive particle creation, deriving explicit relations between entropy and the radiated particle spectrum, the total number of particles, and the total energy. Particle production is computed for scenarios that include accelerated motion, black hole evaporation, and beta decay, validating against known results while also extending them. We focus primarily on the low-entropy limit (analogous to nonrelativistic motion), but also examine cases of significant particle production arising from harmonic cycles. The results establish an explicit operational link between information flow and matter creation, providing a concrete demonstration of “it from bit”.

Modeling Cell Survival Fraction and Other Dose-Response Relationships for Immunodeficient C.B-17 SCID Mice Exposed to 320-kV X Rays

US homeland security concerns related to potential misuse of γ-ray-emitting radiation sources employed in radiobiological research (eg, shielded cesium-137 irradiators) led to recommendations by the National Research Council to conduct studies into possibly replacing γ-ray irradiators used in research involving small rodent and other models with X-ray instruments. A limiting factor is suitability of the X-ray photon energy spectra. The objective of our research was to demonstrate the suitability of the radiation energy spectrum of 320-kV X rays after filtration (HVL = 4 mm Cu) for in-vivo cytotoxicity studies in immunodeficient C.B-17 SCID mice. By using a previously-published Hazard Function (HF) model to characterize dose-response relationships for in vivo bone marrow and spleen cell survival fractions and also to characterize the acute lethality risk (hematopoietic syndrome mode) we demonstrate that the filtered 320-kV X-ray beam appears suitable for such studies. A key finding for C.B-17 SCID mice when compared to results previously obtained for immunocompetent C.B-17 mice is that the immunodeficient mice appear to be more radioresistant, implicating a possible role of the immune system capacity in radiosensitivity of mammals.

The role of fluctuating forces in the generation of compressor noise

The results of a theoretical and experimental study on the role of aerodynamically-induced fluctuating forces in the sound generation by axial-flow compressors are presented. Analytical models for the generation and radiation of sound by rotor/stator combinations were developed. For the experimental substantiation of the analytical results, the technology was developed to measure fluctuating forces directly on rotating airfoils using miniature differential-pressure sensors and FM telemetry. Under the assumption of full coherence of the force field on the blade, radiated sound power was predicted from the force measurements on blades and compared with measured sound power. Both broadband radiation from a single rotating airfoil and discrete frequency radiation due to interaction of multi-bladed stator/rotor configurations were investigated. The results indicate the necessity to obtain information on the details of the force field for accurate prediction of the radiated sound spectrum.

Investigation of the effect of inlet turbulence length scale on fan discrete tone noise

Results of an experimental investigation at the Ames 40- by 80-Foot Wind Tunnel of fan rotor alone discrete tone noise is presented. The investigation examines rotor interaction with fan inlet turbulence. The importance of turbulence length scale is shown by comparing the fan radiated acoustic spectrum with and without modified turbulence length scales. A small-scale low pressure ratio fan was used for the experiment.
