A thermosphere composition measurement using a quadrupole mass spectrometer with a side energy focussing quasi-open ion source

The atomic oxygen concentration in the altitude range 130 to 240 km was determined through the use of a quadrupole spectrometer with a strongly focussing ion source. The instrument is used in the Thermosphere Probe in a manner that greatly increases the proportion of measured oxygen ions that have not experienced a surface collision and permits quantitative evaluation of surface recombination and thermalization effects which inevitably enter all spectrometer determinations. The data obtained strengthen the concept that consideration of surface effects is significant in quantifying spectrometer measurements of reactive gases, and tend to be in agreement with von Zahn's recent results.

Spacecraft applications of quadrupole mass spectrometry

Techniques of mass spectrometry are reviewed and the theory of the quadrupole mass spectrometer (QMS) is discussed. The QMS is shown to have several advantages over older types of mass spectrometers. The QMS has been flown on a large number of rockets and several satellites. More sophisticated versions of the QMS are proposed for future satellites. Special emphasis is placed on problems of contamination which are likely to be encountered on a large and complex satellite like the Advanced Technology Satellite ATS-G. The development of a QMS to detect and forestall such contamination is discussed.

Quadrupole ion pump performance characteristics.

A new nonmagnetic ion pump is described that resembles a quadrupole ionization gauge. The dimensions are larger, and hyperbolically shaped electrodes replace the four rods. Pumping speeds (4-100 liters per sec) for different gases at various peak voltages (1000-3000 V) at corresponding frequencies (57-100 MHz) and at different pressures (10 microtorr to 1 nanotorr) are reported.

Ion masking improves resolution in quadrupole mass spectrometers

Mass spectrometers analyze molecular composition by determining mass-to-charge ratio of ion fragments of molecules. Study adds significantly to quantitative understanding of quadrupole mass filter. It includes development of quantitative theory of ion oscillations, computer analysis of ion behavior, and identification of determining factors in peak tail size.

Temperature dependence of the Na-23 quadrupole coupling constants in Rochelle salt.

The Na-23 nuclear quadrupole coupling constant in Rochelle salt is found to have a linear dependence on temperature which extends through both the higher- and lower-temperature nonferroelectric phases. This result necessitates a reinterpretation of some earlier data, but is in perfect agreement with the recent calculations of Zeks, Shulka, and Blinc.

Combined Quadrupole-dipole Model for Inlet Flow Distortion Noise from a Subsonic Fan

A combined quadrupole-dipole model has been developed for the noise generated by inlet flow distortion in a subsonic fan. A formula is derived for the total upstream-radiated acoustic power in each tone as a function of the design parameters of the fan and the properties of the inlet flow distortion. Numerical results are obtained for values of the parameters corresponding to various quiet fans. The analysis is compared with noise measurements taken on a 51-cm (20-in.) diameter research fan as well as with those taken on a number of full-scale fan stages. Fairly good agreement was obtained. It should therefore be possible to use this model to study the noise-reduction potential of the various fan design parameters.

A remote operation quadrupole mass spectrometer using a custom radio-frequency link approach

A commercial quadrupole mass spectrometer (residual gas analyzer, RGA) system has been modified to operate at large separations of its electronics console and sensing head. The methods implemented have made practical applications, as well as operation, of such a system possible for the first time. This advance was stimulated by a need for placing sensors at remote (45 or 60 m) chamber locations for space simulation testing of orbital flight spacecraft. Emphasis is placed on instrument functional requirements and describing the hardware changes and adjustment techniques necessary to assure operation at the extended cable lengths.

Dipole and quadrupole integrals for the C I, N I, and O I sequences

The Coulomb approximation tables of Oertel and Shomo, together with binding-energy values obtained by a screening approximation, have been used to produce values of the dipole and quadrupole radial integrals needed in obtaining transition probabilities for ions of six, seven, and eight electrons. Some comparisons with more rigorously calculated values show that the present values are quite accurate, especially for ions of higher atomic number.

Neptune - Observations of the H2 quadrupole lines in the /4-0/ band

The first measurement of Neptune's quadrupole H2 lines is reported. The equivalent widths of the S(0) and S(1) lines of the (4-0) band are given along with the corresponding widths measured from comparison spectra of Uranus taken on the same nights. These are interpreted in terms of both an inhomogeneous atmosphere overlying a reflecting layer and a homogeneous, semi-infinite, scattering atmosphere. Only the scattering model proves to be consistent with Neptune's spectrum in this wavelength region. The H2 abundance along the scattering mean free path is found to be less than the value for Rayleigh scattering in pure H2. This result is interpreted in terms of the presence of H2, CH4, and at least one other gas, instead of the more conventional interpretation in terms of the presence of an aerosol mixed with H2. Weak features in the continuum were observed. Their widths and the strength of the H2 features indicate that H2 is more abundant than the sum of the remaining gases in these atmospheres.

Investigation of a quadrupole ultra-high vacuum ion pump

The new nonmagnetic ion pump resembles the quadrupole ionization gage. The dimensions are larger, and hyperbolically shaped electrodes replace the four rods. Their surfaces follow y sq. = 36 + x sq. (x, y in centimeters). The electrodes, 55 cm long, are positioned lengthwise in a tube. At one end a cathode emits electrons; at the other end a narrowly wound flat spiral of tungsten clad with titanium on cathode potential can be heated for titanium evaporation. Electrons accelerated by a dc potential of the surface electrodes oscillate between the ends on rotational trajectories, if a high frequency potential superimposed on the dc potential is properly adjusted. Pumping speeds (4-100 liter/sec) for different gases at different peak voltages (1000-3000V) at corresponding frequencies (57-100 MHz), and at different pressures 0.00001 to the minus 9 power Torr were observed. The lowest pressure reached was below 10 to the minus 10 power Torr.

The importance of determining the solar quadrupole moment

Current theoretical modelling of the sun is in difficulty. Additional observations must be made to place constraints on the plethora of conjectures that have been advanced to explain the low neutrino flux and to guide solar model builders in their search to understand the deep interior of the sun. A determination of the magnitude of the solar quadrupole moment, is one such constraint; it places limits on the density, angular velocity and magnetic field distributions inside the sun.

Reflection and radiation due to a quadrupole near a fluid interface

The reflection of sound at an interface between two fluid half-space in relative motion (one in motion and the other at rest), but with different density and different sound speed, is considered. The reflection coefficient is found in an explicitly closed form. A brief discussion of the effect of mean velocity, i.e., corresponding Mach number on different noise generating quadrupole directivities concludes the presentation of the paper. The graphs provided illustrate this aspect in a rather more convincing way.

Theoretical brightness temperature profiles of atmospheric pure H2 rotational quadrupole lines - Jupiter and Uranus

With the advent of high-resolution instruments and their use high above most of the telluric water vapor, the hydrogen pure rotational quadrupole lines at 28, 17, and 12 microns from the atmospheres of the outer planets may be observed. Best values for the line strengths, pressure-broadening coefficients, diffusion constants, and pressure shifts for these rotational transitions are calculated. The collisionally narrowed Galatry profile is used to calculate brightness temperature line profiles for these H2 transitions for the outer planets, Jupiter and Uranus. The effects of the H2 rotational-translational continuum and of the NH3 v2 band are also included.
