UNESE Argon-39 Measurement Techniques: Developing an above-ground Argon-39 Measurement Capability

The Underground Nuclear Explosion Signatures Experiment (UNESE) sought to use 37 Ar as a tracer for measuring noble-gas migration in the soil surrounding historic Underground Nuclear Explosions (UNE). One unexpected observation was the presence of the much longer-lived isotope 39 Ar from historic UNEs. Quantifying the activity of 39 Ar proved difficult due to the lack of capability to measure significantly-above-background levels of 39 Ar and a general discomfort to repeatedly expose Ultra-Low-Background Proportional Counters (ULBPCs) to significant radioactivity. Because the whole-air samples collected for the 37 Ar tracer measurement were already being measured on the above-ground argon capability, it was decided to expand that capability to include 39 Ar. This document describes the efforts required to achieve quantitative reporting of the 39 Ar backgrounds measured during experiments at the sites of the historic Barnwell and Disko Elm UNEs.

Operation of the Fast Neutron Coincidence Collar (FNCL) with a DD-Neutron Generator

For more than 30 years, the quantitative assay of the 235 U content of light water reactor fresh fuel assemblies relied on measuring coincidence neutrons from fissions induced by an Am(Li) neutron source using 3 He based detectors. The Fast Neutron Collar (FNCL) developed by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), replaces traditional 3 He proportional counters with an array of liquid scintillator detectors arranged about the fuel assembly to provide improved measurement precision and reduced sensitivity to gadolinium poison rods. The FNCL relies on Am(Li) neutron sources that are no longer commercially available. This work examines the replacement of Am(Li) sources with a commercial off the-shelf deuterium–deuterium (DD) neutron generator. In addition to mitigating supply concerns, the neutron generator offers advantages in measurement precision and potential automation of sequential passive/active neutron measurements. This report presents the initial performance results for both the integrated DD/FNCL and Am(Li)/FNCL assays of compact depleted uranium, low-enriched uranium, and highly enriched uranium standards along with an estimate of the expected performance for fresh fuel assemblies. A discussion of the design and operation of the “FNCL Analysis and Simulation Software” is also provided.

10 Boron-film-based gas detectors at ESS

The development of detectors for the European Spallation Source is an important parallel element to the effort put into the design and construction of the neutron source and instruments. The 10Boron-film-based detector developments that started over a decade ago as basic detector concepts have now reached technical maturity after intense prototyping work and numerous testing campaigns. Several of the ESS beamlines that will soon enter the commissioning phase started welcoming the detector systems built with the 10 B-film converter technology. The real-size demonstrators evolved in the last 2–3 years into a diverse suite of gas proportional counters for use in diffraction, reflectometry and small-angle scattering studies in spite of the operational complexity posed by the requirements for large-area coverage, low material budget and robustness for operation in the high-flux and high-radiation environment of ESS. The detectors are now being shipped to ESS or undergoing the last performance and calibration tests before being handed over to the instrument teams for installation in the host beamlines. A common feature of these detector systems is the very large number of readout channels that they are instrumented with in order to fulfill the demanding requirements for sensitivity, spatial resolution and count-rate capability. Across all of the detector types that will operate at ESS, the integration, testing and commissioning of the read-out technologies and software tools for data reduction, calibration and analysis are the focus of the detector and integration teams. These will yield a wealth of knowledge about their operation as well as initial results on the in-situ performance, a very important asset to ensure rapid commissioning of the detectors when neutrons from the ESS source become available. In this paper we will give an overview of the 10 B-film-based detector technologies included in the ESS detector suite that are currently facing the transition from the production phase to installation and integration with the other beamline components, which comes with its own specific challenges of both organizational and technical nature.
