Atmospheric Correction of High-Spatial-Resolution Commercial Satellite Imagery Products Using MODIS Atmospheric Products

Remotely sensed ground reflectance is the basis for many inter-sensor interoperability or change detection techniques. Satellite inter-comparisons and accurate vegetation indices such as the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index, which is used to describe or to imply a wide variety of biophysical parameters and is defined in terms of near-infrared and redband reflectance, require the generation of accurate reflectance maps. This generation relies upon the removal of solar illumination, satellite geometry, and atmospheric effects and is generally referred to as atmospheric correction. Atmospheric correction of remotely sensed imagery to ground reflectance, however, has been widely applied to only a few systems. In this study, we atmospherically corrected commercially available, high spatial resolution IKONOS and QuickBird imagery using several methods to determine the accuracy of the resulting reflectance maps. We used extensive ground measurement datasets for nine IKONOS and QuickBird scenes acquired over a two-year period to establish reflectance map accuracies. A correction approach using atmospheric products derived from Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectrometer data created excellent reflectance maps and demonstrated a reliable, effective method for reflectance map generation.

Ancillary Radiometric Product (APR) usage in the EOS/MISR Level 1B radiance product generation

The radiometric response of the EOS-AM1 Multi-angle Imaging SpectroRadiometer (MISR) is to be measured throughout the six-year mission. This paper discusses the investigations and algorithm changes that have occurred in the production of the ARP since launch, and discusses changes to the Level 1B data that might be expected should data be reprocessed.

CO2U Example Report: NETL CO2 to Renewable Diesel and Co-products via Algal Production

This report represents an example of a completed project for the CO2 Utilization program. The LCA for this example corresponds to the example product systems in the NETL openLCA Life Cycle Inventory (LCI) database. This example LCA represents a fictional microalgae-to-biofuel, hereafter called algae-to-biofuel, technology pathway.

Production of Vanillin From Ferulic Acid by Pseudomonas putida KT2440 Using Metabolic Engineering and In Situ Product Recovery

Vanillin is the most in-demand flavouring compound in the world and because vanillin extracted from vanilla pods cannot meet the global demand, most vanillin on the market today is chemically synthesised. Increasing demands by consumers for natural ingredients have inspired efforts to develop vanillin derived from microbial sources. These efforts have been challenged by low titers, likely caused by the toxicity of vanillin to most microbial biocatalysts. In this study, we engineered a Pseudomonas putida KT2440-derived strain that accumulated vanillin from ferulic acid to 0.64 g/L. To increase the overall titre, we applied a hydrophobic polystyrene-based resin to vanillin-accumulating cultures, which enabled an increase in total vanillin recovery to an apparent titre of 3.35 g/L. This study demonstrates that P. putida can accumulate vanillin from ferulic acid to higher titers when vanillin is removed from the cultivation medium, mitigating its toxicity.
