Design and Principles of Linear Accelerators and Colliders." in Particle Physics Reference Library, pp. 295-336. Springer, Cham, 2020.

Linear accelerators (linacs) use alternating radiofrequency (RF) electromagnetic fields to accelerate charged particles in a straight line. Linacs were invented about 95 years ago and have seen many significant technical innovations since. A wide range of particle beams have been accelerated with linacs including beams of electrons, positrons, protons, antiprotons, and heavy ions. Linac parameter possibilities include pulsed versus continuous wave, low and high beam powers, low and high repetition rates, low transverse emittance beams, short bunches with small energy spreads, and accelerated multiple bunches in a single pulse. The number of linacs around the world has grown tremendously with thousands of linacs in present use, many for medical therapy, in industry, and for research and development in a broad spectrum of scientific fields. Researchers have developed accelerators for scientific tools in their own right, being awarded several Nobel prizes. Moreover, linacs and particle accelerators in general have enabled many discovery level science experiments in related fields, resulting in many Nobel prizes as well.

Measurements of top-quark pair single- and double-differential cross-sections in the all-hadronic channel in pp collisions at $ \sqrt{\mathrm{s}} $ = 13 TeV using the ATLAS detector

Differential cross-sections are measured for top-quark pair production in the all-hadronic decay mode, using proton-proton collision events collected by the ATLAS experiment in which all six decay jets are separately resolved. Absolute and normalised single- and double-differential cross-sections are measured at particle and parton level as a function of various kinematic variables. Emphasis is placed on well-measured observables in fully reconstructed final states, as well as on the study of correlations between the top-quark pair system and additional jet radiation identified in the event. The study is performed using data from proton-proton collisions at s = 13 TeV collected by the ATLAS detector at CERN’s Large Hadron Collider in 2015 and 2016, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36.1 fb - 1 . The rapidities of the individual top quarks and of the top-quark pair are well modelled by several independent event generators. Significant mismodelling is observed in the transverse momenta of the leading three jet emissions, while the leading top-quark transverse momentum and top-quark pair transverse momentum are both found to be incompatible with several theoretical predictions.

Measurement of prompt charged-particle production in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

The differential cross-section of prompt inclusive production of long-lived charged particles in proton-proton collisions is measured using a data sample recorded by the LHCb experiment at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV. The data sample, collected with an unbiased trigger, corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 5.4 nb -1 . The differential cross-section is measured as a function of transverse momentum and pseudorapidity in the ranges $p_T$ ∋ [80, 10 000) MeV/c and η ∋ [2.0, 4.8) and is determined separately for positively and negatively charged particles. The results are compared with predictions from various hadronic-interaction models.

Studies of new Higgs boson interactions through nonresonant $HH$ production in the $ b\overline{b}\gamma \gamma $ final state in $pp$ collisions at $ \sqrt{s} $ = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

A search for nonresonant Higgs boson pair production in the $ b\overline{b}\gamma \gamma $ final state is performed using 140 fb –1 of proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV recorded by the ATLAS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. This analysis supersedes and expands upon the previous nonresonant ATLAS results in this final state based on the same data sample. The analysis strategy is optimised to probe anomalous values not only of the Higgs (H) boson self-coupling modifier κλ but also of the quartic HHVV (V = W, Z) coupling modifier κ 2V . No significant excess above the expected background from Standard Model processes is observed. An observed upper limit μHH < 4.0 is set at 95% confidence level on the Higgs boson pair production cross-section normalised to its Standard Model prediction. The 95% confidence intervals for the coupling modifiers are –1.4 < κ λ < 6.9 and –0.5 < κ 2V < 2.7, assuming all other Higgs boson couplings except the one under study are fixed to the Standard Model predictions. The results are interpreted in the Standard Model effective field theory and Higgs effective field theory frameworks in terms of constraints on the couplings of anomalous Higgs boson (self-)interactions.

Search for diphoton resonances in the 66 to 110 GeV mass range using pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

A search is performed for light, spin-0 bosons decaying into two photons in the 66 to 110 GeV mass range, using 140 fb −1 of proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV produced by the Large Hadron Collider and collected by the ATLAS detector. Multivariate analysis techniques are used to define event categories that improve the sensitivity to new resonances beyond the Standard Model. A model-independent search for a generic spin-0 particle and a model-dependent search for an additional low-mass Higgs boson are performed in the diphoton invariant mass spectrum. No significant excess is observed in either search. Mass-dependent upper limits at the 95% confidence level are set in the model-independent scenario on the fiducial cross-section times branching ratio into two photons in the range of 8 fb to 53 fb. Similarly, in the model-dependent scenario upper limits are set on the total cross-section times branching ratio into two photons as a function of the Higgs boson mass in the range of 19 fb to 102 fb.

Search for boosted low-mass resonances decaying into hadrons produced in association with a photon in pp collisions at $ \sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

Many extensions of the Standard Model, including those with dark matter particles, propose new mediator particles that decay into hadrons. This paper presents a search for such low mass narrow resonances decaying into hadrons using 140 fb −1 of proton-proton collision data recorded with the ATLAS detector at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The resonances are searched for in the invariant mass spectrum of large-radius jets with two-pronged substructure that are recoiling against an energetic photon from initial state radiation, which is used as a trigger to circumvent limitations on the maximum data recording rate. This technique enables the search for boosted hadronically decaying resonances in the mass range 20–100 GeV hitherto unprobed by the ATLAS Collaboration. The observed data are found to agree with Standard Model predictions and 95% confidence level upper limits are set on the coupling of a hypothetical new spin-1 Z′ resonance with Standard Model quarks as a function of the assumed Z′-boson mass in the range between 20 and 200 GeV.

Measurement of the top-quark Yukawa coupling from $t\overline{t}$ production in the lepton+jets final state using pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV with the ATLAS detector

The top-quark Yukawa coupling is extracted from the distribution of the top-quark pair ($t\overline{t}$) invariant mass in proton-proton collisions using 140 fb −1 of data at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV collected in 2015–2018 by the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider. In the region near the production threshold, the $t\overline{t}$ invariant mass spectrum is sensitive to electroweak virtual corrections, including contributions from Higgs boson exchange, thereby providing sensitivity to the top-quark Yukawa coupling. This is the first measurement in ATLAS that aims to obtain this coupling exploiting this approach. The $t\overline{t}$ system is reconstructed in the single-lepton final state, requiring exactly one isolated electron or muon and at least four jets with at least two identified as originating from b-quarks. The measured Yukawa coupling is found to be in good agreement with the Standard Model prediction. An upper limit on the top-quark Yukawa coupling strength of Y t < 2.1 relative to the Standard Model prediction is observed at 95% confidence level, consistent with the expected sensitivity.

Measurement of the top quark pair production cross section in dilepton final states containing one $\tau$ lepton in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}=$ 13 TeV

The cross section of top quark pair production is measured in the $\mathrm{t\bar{t}}\to (\ell\nu_{\ell})(\tau_\mathrm{h}\nu_{\tau})\mathrm{b\bar{b}}$ final state, where $\tau_\mathrm{h}$ refers to the hadronic decays of the $\tau$ lepton, and $\ell$ is either an electron or a muon. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb$^{-1}$ collected in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=$ 13 TeV with the CMS detector. The measured cross section is $\sigma_{\mathrm{t\bar{t}}} =$ 781 $\pm$ 7 (stat) $\pm$ 62 (syst) $\pm$ 20 (lum) pb, and the ratio of the partial width $\Gamma($t$\to\tau\nu_{\tau}$b) to the total decay width of the top quark is measured to be 0.1050 $\pm$ 0.0009 (stat) $\pm$ 0.0071 (syst). This is the first measurement of the $\mathrm{t\bar{t}}$ production cross section in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=$ 13 TeV that explicitly includes $\tau$ leptons. The ratio of the cross sections in the $\ell\tau_\mathrm{h}$ and $\ell\ell$ final states yields a value $R_{\ell\tau_\mathrm{h}/\ell\ell}=$ 0.973 $\pm$ 0.009 (stat) $\pm$ 0.066 (syst), consistent with lepton universality.

Search for squarks and gluinos in final states with jets and missing transverse momentum using 139 fb -1 of $ \sqrt{s} $ = 13 TeV pp collision data with the ATLAS detector

A search for the supersymmetric partners of quarks and gluons (squarks and gluinos) in final states containing jets and missing transverse momentum, but no electrons or muons, is presented. The data used in this search were recorded by the ATLAS experiment in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV during Run 2 of the Large Hadron Collider, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb -1 . The results are interpreted in the context of various R -parity-conserving models where squarks and gluinos are produced in pairs or in association and a neutralino is the lightest supersymmetric particle. An exclusion limit at the 95% confidence level on the mass of the gluino is set at 2.30 TeV for a simplified model containing only a gluino and the lightest neutralino, assuming the latter is massless. For a simplified model involving the strong production of mass-degenerate first- and second-generation squarks, squark masses below 1.85 TeV are excluded if the lightest neutralino is massless. These limits extend substantially beyond the region of supersymmetric parameter space excluded previously by similar searches with the ATLAS detector.

Search for dark matter in association with an energetic photon in pp collisions at $ \sqrt{s} $ = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

A search for dark matter is conducted in final states containing a photon and missing transverse momentum in proton-proton collisions at s√ = 13 TeV. The data, collected during 2015–2018 by the ATLAS experiment at the CERN LHC, correspond to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb -1 . No deviations from the predictions of the Standard Model are observed and 95% confidence-level upper limits between 2.45 fb and 0.5 fb are set on the visible cross section for contributions from physics beyond the Standard Model, in different ranges of the missing transverse momentum. The results are interpreted as 95% confidence-level limits in models where weakly interacting dark-matter candidates are pair-produced via an s-channel axial-vector or vector mediator. Dark-matter candidates with masses up to 415 (580) GeV are excluded for axial-vector (vector) mediators, while the maximum excluded mass of the mediator is 1460 (1470) GeV. In addition, the results are expressed in terms of 95% confidence-level limits on the parameters of a model with an axion-like particle produced in association with a photon, and are used to constrain the coupling g a Z γ of an axion-like particle to the electroweak gauge bosons.

Search for non-resonant Higgs boson pair production in the $2b+2\ell +{E}_{\textrm{T}}^{\textrm{miss}}$ final state in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

A search for non-resonant Higgs boson pair (HH) production is presented, in which one of the Higgs bosons decays to a b-quark pair ($b\bar{b}$) and the other decays to WW * , ZZ * , or τ + τ – , with in each case a final state with ℓ + ℓ – + neutrinos (ℓ = e, μ). The analysis targets separately the gluon-gluon fusion and vector boson fusion production modes. Data recorded by the ATLAS detector in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV at the Large Hadron Collider, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 140 fb –1 , are used in this analysis. Events are selected to have exactly two b-tagged jets and two leptons with opposite electric charge and missing transverse momentum in the final state. These events are classified using multivariate analysis algorithms to separate the HH events from other Standard Model processes. No evidence of the signal is found. The observed (expected) upper limit on the cross-section for non-resonant Higgs boson pair production is determined to be 9.7 (16.2) times the Standard Model prediction at 95% confidence level. The Higgs boson self-interaction coupling parameter κ λ and the quadrilinear coupling parameter κ 2V are each separately constrained by this analysis to be within the ranges [–6.2, 13.3] and [–0.17, 2.4], respectively, at 95% confidence level, when all other parameters are fixed.

Differential cross section measurements for the production of top quark pairs and of additional jets using dilepton events from pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

Differential cross sections for top quark pair ($\textrm{t}\overline{\textrm{t}}$) production are measured in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV using a sample of events containing two oppositely charged leptons. The data were recorded with the CMS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb −1 . The differential cross sections are measured as functions of kinematic observables of the $\textrm{t}\overline{\textrm{t}}$ system, the top quark and antiquark and their decay products, as well as of the number of additional jets in the event. The results are presented as functions of up to three variables and are corrected to the parton and particle levels. When compared to standard model predictions based on quantum chromodynamics at different levels of accuracy, it is found that the calculations do not always describe the observed data. The deviations are found to be largest for the multi-differential cross sections.

Search for single-production of vector-like quarks decaying into Wb in the fully hadronic final state in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

A search for T and Y vector-like quarks produced in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV and decaying into Wb in the fully hadronic final state is presented. The search uses 139 fb −1 of data collected by the ATLAS detector at the LHC from 2015 to 2018. The final state is characterised by a hadronically decaying W boson with large Lorentz boost and a b-tagged jet, which are used to reconstruct the invariant mass of the vector-like quark candidate. The main background is QCD multijet production, which is estimated using a data-driven method. Upon finding no significant excess in data, mass limits at 95% confidence level are obtained as a function of the global coupling parameter, κ. The observed lower limits on the masses of Y quarks with κ = 0.5 and κ = 0.7 are 2.0 TeV and 2.4 TeV, respectively. For T quarks, the observed mass limits are 1.4 TeV for κ = 0.5 and 1.9 TeV for κ = 0.7.

Search for same-charge top-quark pair production in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

A search for the production of top-quark pairs with the same electric charge ($tt$ or $\overline{tt}$) is presented. The analysis uses proton-proton collision data at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV, recorded by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 140 fb −1 . Events with two same-charge leptons and at least two b-tagged jets are selected. Neural networks are employed to define two selections sensitive to additional couplings beyond the Standard Model that would enhance the production rate of same-sign top-quark pairs. No significant signal is observed, leading to an upper limit on the total production cross-section of same-sign top-quark pairs of 1.6 fb at 95% confidence level. Corresponding limits on the three Wilson coefficients associated with the $\mathcal{O}^{(1)}_{tu}$, $\mathcal{O}^{(1)}_{Qu}$, and $\mathcal{O}^{(8)}_{Qu}$ operators in the Standard Model Effective Field Theory framework are derived.

Search for a heavy charged Higgs boson decaying into a W boson and a Higgs boson in final states with leptons and b-jets in s = 13 TeV pp collisions with the ATLAS detector

This article presents a search for a heavy charged Higgs boson produced in association with a top quark and a bottom quark, and decaying into a W boson and a 125 GeV Higgs boson h. The search is performed in final states with one charged lepton, missing transverse momentum, and jets using proton-proton collision data at s$$ \sqrt{s} $$ = 13 TeV recorded with the ATLAS detector during Run 2 of the LHC at CERN. This data set corresponds to a total integrated luminosity of 140 fb−1. The search is conducted by examining the reconstructed invariant mass distribution of the Wh candidates for evidence of a localised excess in the charged Higgs boson mass range from 250 GeV to 3 TeV. No significant excess of data over the expected background is observed and 95% confidence-level upper limits between 2.8 pb and 1.2 fb are placed on the production cross-section times branching ratio for charged Higgs bosons decaying into Wh.

Search for new neutral Higgs bosons through the H$\to$ ZA $\to \ell^{+}\ell^{-} \mathrm{b\bar{b}}$ process in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s} =$ 13 TeV

This paper reports on a search for an extension to the scalar sector of the standard model, where a new CP-even (odd) boson decays to a Z boson and a lighter CP-odd (even) boson, and the latter further decays to a b quark pair. The Z boson is reconstructed via its decays to electron or muon pairs. The analysed data were recorded in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy $ \sqrt{s} $ = 13 TeV, collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC during 2016, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb$^{−1}$. Data and predictions from the standard model are in agreement within the uncertainties. Upper limits at 95% confidence level are set on the production cross section times branching fraction, with masses of the new bosons up to 1000 GeV. The results are interpreted in the context of the two-Higgs-doublet model.[graphic not available: see fulltext]

Differential cross-section measurements of Higgs boson production in the H → τ + τ - decay channel in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

Differential measurements of Higgs boson production in the τ-lepton-pair decay channel are presented in the gluon fusion, vector-boson fusion (VBF), VH and $t\overline{t}H$ associated production modes, with particular focus on the VBF production mode. The data used to perform the measurements correspond to 140 fb -1 of proton-proton collisions collected by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC. Two methods are used to perform the measurements: the Simplified Template Cross-Section (STXS) approach and an Unfolded Fiducial Differential measurement considering only the VBF phase space. For the STXS measurement, events are categorized by their production mode and kinematic properties such as the Higgs boson’s transverse momentum (${p}_{\textrm{T}}^{\textrm{H}}$ ), the number of jets produced in association with the Higgs boson, or the invariant mass of the two leading jets (mjj). For the VBF production mode, the ratio of the measured cross-section to the Standard Model prediction for m jj > 1.5 TeV and ${p}_{\textrm{T}}^{\textrm{H}}$ > 200 GeV (${p}_{\textrm{T}}^{\textrm{H}}$ < 200 GeV) is ${1.29}_{-0.34}^{+0.39}$ (${0.12}_{-0.33}^{+0.34}$ ). This is the first VBF measurement for the higher-${p}_{\textrm{T}}^{\textrm{H}}$ criteria, and the most precise for the lower-${p}_{\textrm{T}}^{\textrm{H}}$ criteria. The fiducial cross-section measurements, which only consider the kinematic properties of the event, are performed as functions of variables characterizing the VBF topology, such as the signed ΔΦ jj between the two leading jets. The measurements have a precision of 30%–50% and agree well with the Standard Model predictions. These results are interpreted in the SMEFT framework, and place the strongest constraints to date on the CP-odd Wilson coefficient ${c}_{H\overset{\sim }{W}}$ .

First observation of strange baryon enhancement with effective energy in pp collisions at the LHC

The production of (multi-)strange hadrons is measured at midrapidity in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV as a function of the local charged-particle multiplicity in the pseudorapidity interval |η| < 0.5 and of the very-forward energy measured by the ALICE Zero-Degree Calorimeters. The latter provides information on the effective energy, i.e. the energy available for particle production in the collision once subtracted from the centre-of-mass energy. The yields of K$^{0}_{s}$, $Λ$ + $\overline{Λ}$, and $Ξ$ – + $\overline{Ξ}$ + per charged-particle increase with the effective energy. In addition, this work exploits a multi-differential approach to decouple the roles of local multiplicity and effective energy in such an enhancement. The results presented in this article provide new insights into the interplay between global properties of the collision, such as the initial available energy in the event, and the locally produced final hadronic state, connected to the charged-particle multiplicity at midrapidity. Notably, a strong increase of strange baryon production with effective energy is observed for fixed charged-particle multiplicity at midrapidity. These results are discussed within the context of existing phenomenological models of hadronisation implemented in different tunes of the PYTHIA 8 event generator.
