Tool facilitates installation of Marmon clamps

Adjustable tool facilitates the installation of Marmon clamps. It provides sufficient mechanical advantage to force the clamps into place, permitting one man operation. Two handles provide the major leverage, and a pivoting arm with a slot enables snap-out action.

Spherical joint connects axially misaligned flanges

Interconnecting straight tube connects axially misaligned flanges in a duct assembly. It adjusts to accommodate variations in relative location of the flanges by pivoting. Adjustment is by spherical mating faces and a spherical-faced indexing swivel flange for bolting backup.

Resilient bearing supports are gas controlled

Self-acting, partial-arc, pivoted-pad bearings in which the bearing-to-journal applied load is pneumatically controlled are used in the operation of a radial flow gas generator where shaft speeds are on the order of 38,500 rpm.

Swing arm carrier protects flexible lines during test item rotation

Swing arm carrier provides protection for flexible lines /fluid, electrical, RF/ connected to a test item that must be rotated through 360 degrees during test. It uses five gates riding on pivots to permit rotation of flexible lines through arcs of plus 180 degrees and minus 180 degrees.

Hermetically sealed vibration damper

Simple fluidic vibration damper for installation at each pivotal mounting between gimbals isolates inertial measuring units from external vibration and other disruptive forces. Installation between each of the three gimbal axes can dampen vibration and shock in any direction while permitting free rotation of the gimbals.

Precisely repeatable rotary mechanism

Precision-finished lead screw and a fitted mating nut member produce a linear translatory motion. This motion is transformed to a rotary movement of a pivotal platform member. The transformation is achieved by coupling the nut member and the platform member through a pair of opposed, taut, flex bands.

Tension measurement device Patent

Apparatus for measuring load on cable under static or dynamic conditions comprising pulleys pivoting structure against restraint of tension strap

Latch mechanism

Rachet device transfers loads imposed on latch to support structure before latch springs resist loads, positively locks two pivoted structures on contact, and carries loads in all directions.

Preliminary terrestrial based experiments on gravity-affected crystal growth

Tin was melted in a heating assembly secured to the arm of a centrifuge. The furnace was allowed to pivot and reach its equilibrium angle of swing for the gravity force being experienced. The crucible was cooled during rotation to allow the growth of single crystals. The crystals were etched for the purpose of observing the growth striations. Slices were removed from some of the crystals to permit observation of the striations in the interior. Visual analyses were made with a scanning electron microscope. Preliminary conclusions relating the appearance of the striations to gravity forces and the affected growth mechanisms are presented. Further experiments that will verify these conclusions and determine other gravity effects are proposed.

Experimental investigation of stability and stall flutter of a free-floating wing V/STOL model

An experimental investigation was made of the static and dynamic stability characteristics of a one-fourth scale model of a tilt-propeller free-wing V/STOL aircraft. The effects of wing pivot location, wing chord, trailing-edge angle, propeller tilt angle, and thrust were studied, and a limited evaluation was made of high-lift devices. A dynamically similar wing was used to measure frequency and damping ratio from transient response data in the linear aerodynamic regime and the results were compared to quasi-steady and unsteady aerodynamic theory. It was found that at high trim angles of attack, in the nonlinear aerodynamic regime, stall flutter oscillations occurred with typical amplitudes ranging from 15 to 20 deg. Wing control tab deflection was effective in initiating and terminating stall flutter but variations in configuration or operating conditions did not greatly influence the occurrence of characteristics of the oscillations.

Pioneer F/G feed movement mechanism

The Pioneer F/G spacecraft achieves the desired earth-pointing direction through a system requiring the shifting of the main antenna feed 1 in. off axis. The feed is pivoted to this position by an electrically heated thermal actuator consisting of an electroless nickel bellows in a copper housing and filled with Freon 21. The actuator overtravels and maintains the feed in the offset position in a thermostatic limit cycle operation mode until commanded off. The mechanism is expected to operate in a -240 F environment near Jupiter and was successfully tested at such temperatures.
