Mars Pathfinder Mission Operations Concept

Mars Pathfinder is one of NASA s new low-cost planetary missions developed to meet a $150 million cost cap. This paper describes the operations philosophy, requirements, organizational structure, and ground data system.

REGULATORY ASPECTS OF SATELLITE COMMUNICATIONS SYSTEMS

The coordinated program is going forward under policy guidelines enunciated by the President in July 1961. They will govern the establishment and operation of a commercial space communications system, to be owned and operated by regulated private enterprise, in keeping with the traditional free-enterprise philosophy under which telecommunications services of this nation have been so successfully conducted.

Explorer Satellite Electronics

A discussion is presented of the design restrictions and the philosophy which enabled the Explorer satellites to be first during the IGY to reveal the presence of a belt of intense cosmic radiation encircling the earth's equator. In addition, an indication of the amount and momentum of cosmic dust in the solar system was obtained from the Explorers. Methods used to obtain reliability in the transducing and communications system are described, together with interpretations of space-environment information as deduced from the narrow-band telemetry.

The Environmental Design of Spacecraft

This paper discusses environmental design philosophies and the importance of environmental testing in the design of spacecraft, with a detailed discussion of the actual environmental testing of one of the mechanisms of PIONEER IV.

The design and construction of the electronic package

The electronics system of the Telstar satellite is described from the point of view of philosophy of design and construction rather than that of circuit details. The reliability is emphasized, and steps taken to preserve the inherent reliability of the components are discussed. The physical construction of modules, subsystems, and finally the entire system is described, including the foam encapsulation and the eventual hermetic sealing of the canister.

Background of piloted simulator development

In this paper a review is made of the piloted simulation facilities commonly sued in the United States. An attempt is made to classify these facilities and to understand how and why these facilities are needed and came into being and how they are used. Some thought on the philosophy of use of simulation are offered and conclusions presented.

Theory and Practical Design of Phase-locked Receivers, Volume I

This is Volume I of a two-volume work on the theory, of phase-locked receivers, with pertinent reference material on practical receiver design. Volume I is primarily devoted to the performance of carrier-tracking loops, including a rigorous treatment of narrow-band systems having IF limiters. The bulk of the work is based on a theoretical linear model, but a nonlinear method is also presented to predict behavior near the threshold. The emphasis throughout the work is toward completeness, simplicity, and internal consistency of the material assembled. Part I of this Volume is an exposition of the theory, the resulting equations, and the design philosophy that have enabled the phase-lock concept to evolve into the basic principle underlying the most sensitive receivers il, the world today. Part II is a condensed version of Part I, intended as a quick reference to formulas, definitions, and salient design considerations.
