Stability and implementation of partitioned CSI solution procedures

A partitioned procedure developed for the efficient solution of control-structure interaction (CSI) problems is presented with emphasis on its computational stability, implementation aspects, and accuracy characteristics. The partitioned CSI procedure proposed here can facilitate the use of large-scale structural analysis for control-structure interaction problems. It is anticipated that real-time CSI simulations will become routine if adequate advances are made in the construction of reduced-order observers and, for some time variant problems, if substantially faster parallel solution procedures for the Riccati equations become available.

Charge balancing of trivalent trace elements in olivine and low-Ca pyroxene - A test using experimental partitioning data

Charge-balancing substitution mechanisms are determined for the incorporation of the trivalent cations Al and Sc in low-Ca pyroxene and Al, Sc, Yb, and Cr in olivine. In low-Ca pyroxene, the substitution mechanism is determined by evaluating covariations of trivalent trace cations with Si, Mg, Fe, and Ca. In olivine, substitution mechanisms are determined by comparing the observed compositional dependence of partitioning to the compositional dependence theoretically expected for each substitution reaction. A realistic equilibrium constant is formulated for trace element exchanges between olivines, low-Ca pyroxenes, and melt, making possible improved modeling of the variations of trace element partitioning with temperature and phase composition.

Efficient algorithms for a class of partitioning problems

The problem of optimally partitioning the modules of chain- or tree-like tasks over chain-structured or host-satellite multiple computer systems is addressed. This important class of problems includes many signal processing and industrial control applications. Prior research has resulted in a succession of faster exact and approximate algorithms for these problems. Polynomial exact and approximate algorithms are described for this class that are better than any of the previously reported algorithms. The approach is based on a preprocessing step that condenses the given chain or tree structured task into a monotonic chain or tree. The partitioning of this monotonic take can then be carried out using fast search techniques.

A multiple-time-scale turbulence model based on variable partitioning of the turbulent kinetic energy spectrum

A multiple-time-scale turbulence model of a single point closure and a simplified split-spectrum method is presented. In the model, the effect of the ratio of the production rate to the dissipation rate on eddy viscosity is modeled by use of the multiple-time-scales and a variable partitioning of the turbulent kinetic energy spectrum. The concept of a variable partitioning of the turbulent kinetic energy spectrum and the rest of the model details are based on the previously reported algebraic stress turbulence model. Example problems considered include: a fully developed channel flow, a plane jet exhausting into a moving stream, a wall jet flow, and a weakly coupled wake-boundary layer interaction flow. The computational results compared favorably with those obtained by using the algebraic stress turbulence model as well as experimental data. The present turbulence model, as well as the algebraic stress turbulence model, yielded significantly improved computational results for the complex turbulent boundary layer flows, such as the wall jet flow and the wake boundary layer interaction flow, compared with available computational results obtained by using the standard kappa-epsilon turbulence model.

Implementation of a partitioned algorithm for simulation of large CSI problems

The implementation of a partitioned numerical algorithm for determining the dynamic response of coupled structure/controller/estimator finite-dimensional systems is reviewed. The partitioned approach leads to a set of coupled first and second-order linear differential equations which are numerically integrated with extrapolation and implicit step methods. The present software implementation, ACSIS, utilizes parallel processing techniques at various levels to optimize performance on a shared-memory concurrent/vector processing system. A general procedure for the design of controller and filter gains is also implemented, which utilizes the vibration characteristics of the structure to be solved. Also presented are: example problems; a user's guide to the software; the procedures and algorithm scripts; a stability analysis for the algorithm; and the source code for the parallel implementation.

Mg-perovskite/silicate melt and magnesiowuestite/silicate melt partition coefficients for KLB-1 at 250 Kbars

The partitioning of elements amongst lower mantle phases and silicate melts is of interest in unraveling the early thermal history of the Earth. Because of the technical difficulty in carrying out such measurements, only one direct set of measurements was reported previously, and these results as well as interpretations based on them have generated controversy. Here we report what are to our knowledge only the second set of directly measured trace element partition coefficients for a natural system (KLB-1).

Controller partitioning for integrated flight/propulsion control implementation

The notion of partitioning a centralized controller into a decentralized, hierarchical structure suitable for integrated flight/propulsion control (IFPC) implementation is discussed. A systematic procedure is developed for determining partitioned airframe and engine subsystem controllers (subcontrollers), with the desired interconnection structure, that approximate the closed-loop performance and robustness characteristics of a given centralized controller. The procedure is demonstrated by application to IFPC design for a Short Take-Off and Vertical Landing (STOVL) aircraft in the landing approach to hover transition flight phase.

Wigner expansions for partition functions of nonrelativistic and relativistic oscillator systems

The equilibrium quantum statistics of various anharmonic oscillator systems including relativistic systems is considered within the Wigner phase space formalism. For this purpose the Wigner series expansion for the partition function is generalized to include relativistic corrections. The new series for partition functions and all thermodynamic potentials yield quantum corrections in terms of powers of h(sup 2) and relativistic corrections given by Kelvin functions (modified Hankel functions) K(sub nu)(mc(sup 2)/kT). As applications, the symmetric Toda oscillator, isotonic and singular anharmonic oscillators, and hindered rotators, i.e. oscillators with cosine potential, are addressed.

The effect of oxygen fugacity on the partitioning of nickel and cobalt between olivine, silicate melt, and metal

The effect of oxygen fugacity, f(O2), on the partitioning behavior of Ni and Co between olivine, silicate melt, and metal was investigated in the CaO-MgO-Al2O3-SiO2-FeO-Na2O system, an analogue of a chondrule composition from an ordinary chondrite. The conditions were 1350 C and 1 atm, with values of f(O2) varying between 10 exp -5.5 and 10 exp -12.6 atm (i.e., the f(O2) range relevant for crystal/liquid processes in terrestrial planets and meteorite parent bodies). Results of chemical analysis showed that the values of the Ni and Co partitioning coefficients begin to decrease at values of f(O2) that are about 3.9 log units below the nickel-nickel oxide and cobalt-cobalt oxide buffers, respectively, near the metal saturation for the chondrule analogue composition.

Site partitioning for distributed redundant disk arrays

Distributed redundant disk arrays can be used in a distributed computing system or database system to provide recovery in the presence of temporary and permanent failures of single sites. In this paper, we look at the problem of partitioning the sites into redundant arrays in such way that the communication costs for maintaining the parity information are minimized. We show that the partitioning problem is NP-complete and we propose two heuristic algorithms for finding approximate solutions.

Modeling of the partitioning of reactive odd nitrogen in the lower stratosphere using aircraft measurements of NOy, NO, and other trace species

The objective of this research was to gain a more thorough understanding of the atmospheric processes which control the partitioning of species within the reactive nitrogen (NO(y)) reservoir in the lower stratosphere. This understanding is crucial to predicting ozone loss in the stratosphere. NO(y) is defined as NO + NO2 + HNO3 + N2O5 + ClONO2 + HO2NO2 + NO3 + particulate nitrate. The research focuses on deriving the partitioning among these species using the combined set of measurements from the NASA ER-2 aircraft during recent missions designed to study stratospheric ozone depletion.

Siderophile elements in the upper mantle of the Earth: New clues from metal-silicate partition coefficients

New, precise data on the solubilities of Ni, Co, and Mo in silicate melts at 1400 C and fO2 from IW to IW-2 are presented. The results suggest NiO, CoO as stable species in the melt. No evidence for metallic Ni or Co was found. Equilibrium was ensured by reversals with initially high Ni and Co in the glass. Mo appears to change oxidation state at IW-1, from MoO3 to MoO2. Metal-silicate partition coefficients calculated from these data and recent data on Pd indicate similar partition coefficients for Pd and Mo at the conditions of core formation. This unexpected result constrains models of core formation in the Earth.

A user's manual for the computer code for partitioning a centralized controller into decentralized subcontrollers with applicability to Integrated Flight/Propulsion Control (IFPC) is presented. Partitioning of a centralized controller into two subcontrollers is described and the algorithm on which the code is based is discussed. The algorithm uses parameter optimization of a cost function which is described. The major data structures and functions are described. Specific instructions are given. The user is led through an example of an IFCP application.

FNAS phase partitions

Project NAS8-36955 D.O. #100 initially involved the following tasks: (1) evaluation of various coatings' ability to control wall wetting and surface zeta potential expression; (2) testing various methods to mix and control the demixing of phase systems; and (3) videomicroscopic investigation of cell partition. Three complementary areas were identified for modification and extension of the original contract. They were: (1) identification of new supports for column cell partition; (2) electrokinetic detection of protein adsorption; and (3) emulsion studies related to bioseparations.

Orientation and velocity dependence of the nonequilibrium partition coefficient

Monte Carlo simulations based on a Spin-1 Ising Model for binary alloys have been used to investigate the non-equilibrium partition coefficient (k(sub neq)) as a function of solid-liquid interface velocity and orientation. In simulations of Si with a second component k(sub neq) is greater in the [111] direction than the [100] direction in agreement with experimental results reported by Azlz et al. The simulated partition coefficient scales with the square of the step velocity divided by the diffusion coefficient of the secondary component in the liquid.

Fast Multilevel Implementation of Recursive Spectral Bisection for Partitioning Unstructured Problems

If problems involving unstructured meshes are to be solved efficiently on distributed-memory parallel computers, the meshes must be partitioned and distributed across processors in a way that balances tile computational load and minimizes communication. The recursive spectral bisection method (RSB) has been shown to be very effective for such partitioning problems compared to alternative methods, but RSB in its simplest form is expensive. Here a multilevel version of RSB is introduced that attains about an order-of-magnitude improvement in run time on typical examples.
