Thermomechanical Multiaxial Fatigue Testing Capability Developed

Structural components in aeronautical gas turbine engines typically experience multiaxial states of stress under nonisothermal conditions. To estimate the durability of the various components in the engine, one must characterize the cyclic deformation and fatigue behavior of the materials used under thermal and complex mechanical loading conditions. To this end, a testing protocol and associated test control software were developed at the NASA Lewis Research Center for thermomechanical axial-torsional fatigue tests. These tests are to be performed on thin-walled, tubular specimens fabricated from the cobalt-based superalloy Haynes 188. The software is written in C and runs on an MS-DOS based microcomputer.

X-ray and Sunyaev-Zel'dovich Effect Measurements of the Gas Mass Fraction in Galaxy Clusters

We present gas mass fractions of 38 massive galaxy clusters spanning redshifts from 0.14 to 0.89, derived from Chandra X-ray data and OVRO/BIMA interferometric Sunyaev-Zel' dovich Effect (SZE) measurements. We use three models for the gas distribution: (1) an isothermal Beta-model fit jointly to the X-ray data at radii beyond 100 kpc and to all of the SZE data, (2) a nonisothermal double Beta-model fit jointly to all of the X-ray and SZE data, and (3) an isothermal Beta-model fit only to the SZE spatial data. We show that the simple isothermal model well characterizes the intracluster medium (ICM) outside of the cluster core, and provides consistently good fits to clusters spanning a wide range of morphological properties. The agreement in the results shows that the core can be satisfactorily accounted for by either excluding the core in fits to the X-ray data (the 100 kpc-cut model) or modeling the intracluster gas with a non-isothermal double Beta-model. We find that the SZE is largely insensitive to structure in the core.

Isothermal Analysis of the Crystallization Kinetics in Lithium Disilicate Glass using Trans Temp Furnace

Crystallization kinetics for lithium disilicate, Li2O2SiO2, (LS2) glass has been studied extensively by nonisothermal methods, but only a few studies on the isothermal crystallization kinetics of LS2 are available. In the present research, isothermal crystallization experiments or the LS2 glass were conducted in a Trans Temp furnace between 600 and 635 C, and selected properties such as the activation energy for crystallization (E), crystal growth index or Avrami parameter (n), the concentration of quenched-in nuclei in the starting glass (Ni) and the crystal nucleation rate (I) were measured. The crystal nucleation rate (I) was measured at only one selected temperature of 452 C, at this time. This commercial furnace has a 13 cm long isothermal heating zone (+/- 1 C) that allows precise heat treatment of relatively large samples. By placing a thermocouple within approx. 2 mm of the sample, it was possible to detect the heat of crystallization in the form of an isothermal crystallization exotherm during isothermal heat treatment of the sample. The values of E (318 plus or minus 10 kJ/mol), n (3.6 plus or minus 0.l), and N(sub i) (1.6 x 10(exp l2) m(sup -3)) calculated by analyzing these isotherms using the standard Johnson-Mehl-Avrami (JMA) equation were reproducible and in agreement with the literature values. The value of I, 1.9 x 10(exp 10) m(sup -3) s(sup -1) at 452 C, is an order of magnitude higher than the reported value for LS2.

Precipitation Model Validation in 3rd Generation Aeroturbine Disc Alloys

In support of application of the DARPA-AIM methodology to the accelerated hybrid thermal process optimization of 3rd generation aeroturbine disc alloys with quantified uncertainty, equilibrium and diffusion couple experiments have identified available fundamental thermodynamic and mobility databases of sufficient accuracy. Using coherent interfacial energies quantified by Single-Sensor DTA nucleation undercooling measurements, PrecipiCalc(TM) simulations of nonisothermal precipitation in both supersolvus and subsolvus treated samples show good agreement with measured gamma particle sizes and compositions. Observed longterm isothermal coarsening behavior defines requirements for further refinement of elastic misfit energy and treatment of the parallel evolution of incoherent precipitation at grain boundaries.

Newton trust-region methods with primary variable switching for simulating high temperature multiphase porous media flow

Coupling multiphase flow with energy transport due to high temperature heat sources introduces significant new challenges since boiling and condensation processes can lead to dry-out conditions with subsequent re-wetting. The transition between two-phase and single-phase behavior can require changes to the primary dependent variables adding discontinuities as well as extending constitutive nonlinear relations to extreme physical conditions. Practical simulations of large-scale engineered domains lead to Jacobian systems with a very large number of unknowns that must be solved efficiently using iterative methods in parallel on high-performance computers. Performance assessment of potential nuclear repositories, carbon sequestration sites and geothermal reservoirs can require numerous Monte-Carlo simulations to explore uncertainty in material properties, boundary conditions, and failure scenarios. Due to the numerical challenges, standard NR iteration may not converge over the range of required simulations and require more sophisticated optimization method like trust-region. In this study, we use the open-source simulator PFLOTRAN for the important practical problem of the safety assessment of future nuclear waste repositories in the U.S. DOE geologic disposal safety assessment Framework. The simulator applies the PETSc parallel framework and a backward Euler, finite volume discretization. We demonstrate failure of the conventional NR method and the success of trust-region modifications to Newton’s method for a series of test problems of increasing complexity. Trust-region methods essentially modify the Newton step size and direction under some circumstances where the standard NR iteration can cause the solution to diverge or oscillate. Furthermore, we show how the Newton Trust-Region method can be adapted for Primary Variable Switching (PVS) when the multiphase state changes due to boiling or condensation. The simulations with high-temperature heat sources which led to extreme nonlinear processes with many state changes in the domain did not converge with NR, but they do complete successfully with the trust-region methods modified for PVS. This implementation effectively decreased weeks of simulation time needing manual adjustments to complete a simulation down to a day. Finally, we show the strong scalability of the methods on a single node and multiple nodes in an HPC cluster.
