Floating zone crystal growth, structure, and properties of a cubic Li 5.5 La 3 Nb 1.5 Zr 0.5 O 12 garnet-type lithium-ion conductor

As a promising candidate for solid-state electrolytes in Li-ion batteries, the garnet-type Li-ion conductor series Li 5+x La 3 Nb 2-x Zr x O 12 (LLNZO) (0 ≤ x ≤ 2) exhibits high ionic conductivity at room temperature. However, no previous single-crystal growth or characterization has been reported for LLNZO compositions 0 ≤ x ≤ 1. To obtain a complete understanding of the trend in the structure–property relationship in this class of materials, we used the floating zone (FZ) method to grow a single crystal of Li 5.5 La 3 Nb 1.5 Zr 0.5 O 12 that was 4 mm in diameter and 10 mm in length. Using Laue neutron single-crystal diffraction, two distinct Li sites were observed: tetrahedral 24d and octahedral 96h sites. The maximum entropy method (MEM) based on neutron single-crystal diffraction data was used to map Li nuclear density and estimate that the bottleneck of Li transport exists between neighboring tetrahedral and octahedral sites, and that Li is delocalized between split octahedral sites. Room-temperature Li-ion conductivity in Li 5.5 La 3 Nb 1.5 Zr 0.5 O 12 measured with electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) was 1.37 × 10 -4 S cm -1 . The Li migration activation energy was estimated to be 0.50 eV from EIS and 0.47 eV from dielectric relaxation measurements. The Li-ion jump attempt rate was estimated to be 1.47 × 10 12 Hz while the time scale of successful migration is 10 -7 to 10 -6 s.

Nb 3 Sn multicell cavity coating system at Jefferson Lab

Superconducting radio frequency niobium cavities are the building blocks of modern accelerators for scientific applications. Lower surface resistance, higher fields, and high operating temperatures advance the reach of the future accelerators for scientific discovery as well as potentially enabling cost-effective industrial solutions. We describe the design and performance of an Nb 3 Sn coating system that converts the inner surface of niobium cavities to an Nb 3 Sn film. The niobium surface, heated by radiation from the niobium retort, is exposed to Sn and SnCl 2 vapor during the heat cycle, which results in about 2 μm Nb 3 Sn film on the niobium surface. Film composition and structure as well as radio frequency properties with 1-cell R&D cavities and 5-cell practical accelerator cavities are presented.

Structure and phase transitions in niobium and tantalum derived nanoscale transition metal perovskites, Ba(Ti,MV)O3, M=Nb,Ta

The prospect of creating ferroelectric or high permittivity nanomaterials provides motivation for investigating complex transition metal oxides of the form Ba(Ti, MV)O3, where M = Nb or Ta. Solid state processing typically produces mixtures of crystalline phases, rarely beyond minimally doped Nb/Ta. Using a modified sol-gel method, we prepared single phase nanocrystals of Ba(Ti, M)O3. Compositional and elemental analysis puts the empirical formulas close to BaTi0.5Nb0.5O3−δ and BaTi0.5Ta0.5O3−δ. For both materials, a reversible temperature dependent phase transition (non-centrosymmetric to symmetric) is observed in the Raman spectrum in the region 533–583 K (260–310 °C); for Ba(Ti, Nb)O3, the onset is at 543 K (270 °C); and for Ba(Ti, Ta)O3, the onset is at 533 K (260 °C), which are comparable with 390–393 K (117–120 °C) for bulk BaTiO3. The crystal structure was resolved by examination of the powder x-ray diffraction and atomic pair distribution function (PDF) analysis of synchrotron total scattering data. It was postulated whether the structure adopted at the nanoscale was single or double perovskite. Double perovskites (A2B′B″O6) are characterized by the type and extent of cation ordering, which gives rise to higher symmetry crystal structures. PDF analysis was used to examine all likely candidate structures and to look for evidence of higher symmetry. The feasible phase space that evolves includes the ordered double perovskite structure Ba2(Ti, MV)O6 (M = Nb, Ta) Fm-3m, a disordered cubic structure, as a suitable high temperature analog, Ba(Ti, MV)O3Pm-3m, and an orthorhombic Ba(Ti, MV)O3Amm2, a room temperature structure that presents an unusually high level of lattice displacement, possibly due to octahedral tilting, and indication of a highly polarized crystal.

Absence of detectable spin and orbital pumping from Ni to Nb by out-of-plane ferromagnetic resonance

Excited ferromagnets can pump spin angular momentum, along with possibly orbital angular momentum. Among elemental ferromagnets, Ni has been proposed to exhibit substantial orbital pumping relative to spin pumping. Here, in this study, we search for a signature of orbital pumping by Ni, specifically by comparing out-of-plane ferromagnetic resonance in heterostructures without Ni (FeV/Nb) and with Ni (FeV-Ni/Nb). The FeV/Nb series shows a clear increase in Gilbert damping with the Nb sink thickness, attributed to spin pumping from FeV to Nb. Surprisingly, the FeV-Ni/Nb series exhibits no such damping increase, revealing no significant spin or orbital pumping from Ni to Nb. Our results offer a fresh perspective on angular-momentum transfer in Ni/Nb heterostructures.

Distribution of 7 Li implants in Nb films for a sterile neutrino search

The Beryllium-7 Electron capture in Superconducting Tunnel junctions (BeEST) experiment searches for sub-MeV sterile neutrinos by measuring the 7 Li recoil spectrum from 7 Be decay in Ta-based superconducting quantum sensors. Its sensitivity is limited by spectral broadening from interactions between 7 Be/ 7 Li and the Ta host material. This study investigates Nb as an alternative sensor material using scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) and atom probe tomography (APT) on 7 Li-implanted Nb films (∼0.5 at. %). STEM shows no 7 Li cluster formation and no implantation-induced microstructural degradation, while APT reveals some limited 7 Li segregation to grain boundaries. Although this segregation may slightly influence binding energies, it is unlikely to affect the broadening of the recoil spectrum significantly. These findings support Nb as a viable sensor material for future phases of the BeEST experiment.

Chemical and Chemical-Mechanical Polishing of Surface Roughness on L-PBF/GRCop-42 Cu-Cr-Nb Additive Manufactured 10-GHz RF Structures

Laser-based powder bed fusion (L-PBF) allows additive manufacture (AM) of lower hybrid current drive (LHCD) radio-frequency (RF) launchers from Glenn Research Copper, a Cr 2 Nb precipitation-hardened alloy (GRCop-42) in configurations unachievable with conventional machining. Rough surfaces in AM components increase RF losses and lead to arcing in high-power vacuum RF applications. Chemical polishing, chemical-mechanical polishing, or a combination of both were utilized to planarize the internal surfaces of RF structures, resulting in surface roughness as low as R a = 0.2 µm. Refinement in polishing techniques now enables GRCop-42 alloys (4 at. % Cr, 2 at. % Nb) to achieve similar surface roughness to GRCop-84 (8 at. % Cr, 4 at. % Nb) and equivalent cavity losses to extruded oxygen-free copper waveguides at 10 GHz.

Analysis of RF losses and material characterization of samples removed from a Nb 3 Sn-coated superconducting RF cavity

Nb 3 Sn (T c ≈18 K and H sh ≈400 mT) is a prospective material to replace Nb (T c ≈9 K and H sh ≈200 mT) in SRF accelerator cavities for significant cost reduction and performance enhancement. Because of its material properties, Nb3Sn is best employed as a thin film (coating) inside an already built RF cavity structure. A particular test cavity noted as C3C4 was a 1.5 GHz single-cell Nb cavity, coated with Nb3Sn using Sn vapor diffusion process at Jefferson Lab. Cold measurements of the coated cavity indicated the superconducting transition temperature of about 18 K. Subsequent RF measurements indicated field-dependent surface resistance both at 4.3 K and 2.0 K. After initial cold measurements, the cavity RF loss distribution was studied with a thermometry mapping system. Loss regions were identified with thermometry and were cut out for material analysis. The presence of significantly thin patchy regions and other carbon-rich defects is associated with strong local field-dependent surface resistance. This paper summarizes RF and thermometry results correlated with material science findings.

Stabilization of magnetic bubbles in [Ni/Co]n multilayers on an oxygen-reconstructed Nb(110) surface via an ultra-thin Cu interlayer

Magnetic thin films hosting topological spin textures, such as magnetic skyrmions, hold high potential for breakthroughs in the field of spintronics, due to good scalability and energy efficiency. Novel computational architectures such as memory-in-logic devices rely on material platforms able to host those topological spin textures. Furthermore, recently proposed designs of novel quantum information technologies are based on heterostructures where topological spin textures are in direct proximity to a superconducting layer. Here, we demonstrate the stabilization of out-of-plane magnetic bubbles in highly ordered [Ni/Co]n multilayers on a Nb(110) single crystal. This is achieved without the need for the removal of the well-known Nb(110)-oxide surface reconstruction, due to the introduction of an ultra-thin Cu interlayer in between the Nb substrate and the magnetic multilayer. The Cu interlayer generates a well-ordered hexagonal surface, which is key for the epitaxial growth of the [Ni/Co]n multilayers hosting the desired out-of-plane anisotropy. The magnetic ground state of the prepared material stacks is directly imaged via spin-polarized low-energy electron microscopy, revealing the presence of magnetic bubble domains with lateral sizes as small as 450 nm.

Experimental observation of short-range magnetic correlations in amorphous Nb 2 O 5 and Ta 2 O 5 thin films

We use muon spin rotation/relaxation/resonance ( μ SR ) to investigate the magnetic properties of niobium pentoxide ( Nb 2 O 5 ) and tantalum pentoxide ( Ta 2 O 5 ) thin films. In both oxides, we observe a magnetic response at the lowest available temperature of 2.8 K. This response appears to be structurally dependent: thermally oxidized Ta 2 O 5 with low crystallinity demonstrates suppressed magnetism, while fully amorphous Ta 2 O 5 demonstrates local static magnetism. In contrast, amorphous Nb 2 O 5 is dominated by magnetic fluctuations and is strongly magnetically disordered compared to Ta 2 O 5 . Our results suggest that these fundamental differences in the magnetism of Ta and Nb oxides could explain the performance limitations in superconducting qubits and resonators.

High critical field superconductivity at ambient pressure in MoB 2 stabilized in the P6/mmm structure via Nb substitution

Recently it was discovered that, under elevated pressures, MoB 2 exhibits superconductivity at a critical temperature T c as high as 32 K. The superconductivity appears to develop following a pressure-induced structural transition from the ambient pressure $\text{R}\bar{3}$⁢m structure to an MgB 2 -like P6/mmm structure. This suggests that remarkably high T c values among diborides are not restricted to MgB 2 as previously appeared to be the case, and that similarly high T c values may occur in other diborides if they can be coerced into the MgB 2 structure. In this paper, we show that density functional theory calculations indicate that phonon free energy stabilizes the P6/mmm structure over the $\text{R}\bar{3}$⁢m at high temperatures across the Nb 1–x ⁢Mo x B 2 series. X-ray diffraction confirms that the synthesized Nb-substituted MoB 2 adopts the MgB 2 crystal structure. Finally, high magnetic field electrical resistivity measurements and specific heat measurements demonstrate that Nb x ⁢Mo 1–x⁢ B 2 exhibits superconductivity with T c as high as 8 K and critical fields approaching 6 T.

Higher-order topological and nodal superconducting transition-metal sulfides M S ( M = Nb and Ta )

Intrinsic topological superconducting materials are exotic and vital to develop the next-generation topological superconducting devices, topological quantum calculations, and quantum information technologies. Here, we predict the topological and nodal superconductivity of NiAs-type M ⁢S ( M = Nb and Ta) transition-metal sulfides. We reveal their higher-order topology nature with an index of Z 4 = 2. These materials have a higher T c than the Nb or Ta metal superconductors due to their flat band and strong electron-phonon coupling nature. Electron doping and lighter isotopes can effectively enhance the T c . In conclusion, our findings show that the M ⁢S ( M = Nb and Ta) systems can be platforms to study exotic physics in the higher-order topological superconductors, and provide a theoretical support to utilize them as the topological superconducting devices in the field of advanced topological quantum calculations and information technologies.

Reexamination of isoscalar giant resonances in 12 C and 93 Nb through 6 Li scattering

Inelastic Li 6 scattering at 100 MeV/u on C 12 and Nb 93 has been measured with the high-resolution magnetic spectrometer Grand Raiden. The magnetic-rigidity settings of the spectrometer covered excitation energies from 10 to 40 MeV and scattering angles in the range 0 ° < θ lab. < 2 ° . The isoscalar giant monopole resonance was selectively excited in the present data. Measurements free of instrumental background and the very favorable resonance-to-continuum ratio of Li 6 scattering allowed for precise determination of the E 0 strengths in C 12 and Nb 93 . Additionally, it was found that the monopole strength in C 12 exhausts 52 ± 3 (stat.) ± 8 (sys.) % of the energy-weighted sum rule (EWSR), which is considerably higher than results from previous α -scattering experiments. The monopole strength in Nb 93 exhausts 92 ± 4 (stat.) ± 10 (sys.) % of the EWSR, and it is consistent with measurements of nuclei with mass number of A ≈ 90 . Such comparison indicates that the isoscalar giant monopole resonance distributions in these nuclei are very similar, and no influence due to nuclear structure was observed.

Investigations Towards Ultra-Low Cost Nb 3 Sn SRF Fabrication via Melt Casted Bronze Route Processing

Here, a novel approach to fabricating Nb 3 Sn SRF cavities and other RF components using an ultra-low-cost melt casting fabrication process has been investigated. This simple, low cost melt casting technique has the potential to be used to fabricate nearly any superconducting Nb3Sn structure using either the Bronze Route (BR), Internal Tin (IT), External Tin (ET) processes as well as normal conducting pure copper (Cu) cavities. Most of the heat treated samples that were examined using SEM/EDX seemed to show a reasonable correlation of T c onset and transition width (ΔT c ) of the ingots initial/starting Sn content to the desired stoichiometric Nb 3 Sn phase, where the lower starting Sn content coupons resulted in lower T c 's with broader transition widths and the higher starting Sn coupons resulted in higher T c 's with narrower ΔT c ’s. The best samples had T c onsets ~17-18 K and ΔT c 's < 2 K. Two samples were further tested for RF surface resistance (R s ) and Quality Factor (Q) at JLAB. Here, these RF measurements were performed at 7.4 GHz using a calorimetric technique and showed two transitions, one at ~ 8 K and another at ~ 14 K; values of R s were at least two orders of magnitude higher than similar high quality Nb 3 Sn films directly deposited substrates by JLAB and with another superconducting transition close to the superconducting transition temperature of niobium. Substantial improvements in the processing variables ranging from higher quality of the initial ingots with higher Sn content, to better electropolishing and reaction heat treatment regimens will be necessary to realize improved RF performance metrics.

Assembly and Pre-Loading Specifications for the Series Production of the Nb 3 Sn MQXFA Quadrupole Magnets for the HL-LHC

We report the High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) Project is planning to install 16 cold-masses made with Nb 3 Sn quadrupole magnets in the LHC Interaction Regions to significantly increase its luminosity. Half of these cold masses are fabricated at BNL, FNAL, and LBNL under the US Accelerator Research Program (AUP). Each cold mass includes two identical Nb 3 Sn quadrupole magnets, called MQXFA with a magnetic length of 4.2 m. Currently, the AUP project has completed the fabrication and test of the first 5 pre-series magnets, and is working on the following 16 magnets for the series production. The brittleness and strain sensitivity of the Nb 3 Sn superconducting material requires a careful definition of the allowable maximum stress in the windings during magnet assembly and pre-load, and a tight control of their variation within the whole coil length. Therefore, a series of assembly and pre-load specifications have been defined with the goals of minimizing the risk of conductor degradation and providing the mechanical support required to reach the nominal current during powering. In this paper we present the specifications defined for the MQXFA magnets and applied during the different assembly phases and during the pre-load process of the first 5 pre-series magnets.

Quench Behavior of 18-mm-Period, 1.1-m-Long Nb 3 Sn Undulator Magnets

A novel Nb 3 Sn-based superconducting undulator (SCU) was developed and integrated into the Advanced Photon Source (APS) at Argonne National Laboratory. The SCU achieved user operation within an accelerator environment. Compared to its Nb-Ti counterpart, the Nb 3 Sn SCU operates at substantially higher currents. Thus, a detailed experimental evaluation of the SCU magnets’ performance was necessary under both “wet” and indirectly cooled conditions to ensure its reliability during operation. Here our study indicated that the cooling method has a noticeable influence on the magnet's behavior. Specifically, energy dissipation in the magnets during quenches was observed to be greater under indirect cooling than with “wet” cooling. This investigation provided insights into the safe operational limits. Guided by these insights the more challenging high-current tests were successfully carried out at the end of the user phase. The SCU achieved the design undulator field of 1.17 T at 820 A and 4.2 K, with a magnetic gap of 9.5 mm and a period of 18 mm. Actual performance exceeded the specifications, reaching 850 A.

Assessment of Training Performance, Degradation and Robustness of Paraffin-Wax Impregnated Nb 3 Sn Demonstrator Under High Magnetic Field

In the context of high-energy physics, the use of Nb 3 Sn superconducting magnets as a cost-effective and reliable technology depends on improvements in the following areas: long development and manufacturing cycles, conductor degradation after thermal cycling, long training, as well as a demonstration in accelerator magnets with a beam aperture of the full potential of modern Nb 3 Sn conductors. In short, performance, robustness, and cost are the three issues to be addressed. The Magnet Development project (MagDev) of the Swiss Accelerator Research and Technology initiative (CHART) at the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) aims to contribute to the solutions to each of these issues, re-thinking the manufacturing and design process. Here in our program, every innovation is to be validated by means of a panoply of fast-turnaround tools: from non-powered and powered samples and coils, tested under background field, to low-field subscale magnets and high field short prototypes. This work presents one element in this panoply of R&D vehicles: a stress-managed Nb 3 Sn coil called BigBOX, impregnated with paraffin wax, and tested, through a collaboration with the Magnet Development Program of the United States (US-MDP), in the background field of Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL)’s common coils dipole DCC17.

Study of the niobium oxide structure and microscopic effect of plasma processing on the Nb surface

A study of the niobium oxide structure is presented here, focusing on the niobium suboxides. Multiple steps of argon sputtering and XPS measurements were carried out until the metal surface was exposed. Subsequently, the sample was exposed to air for different time intervals and the oxide regrowth was studied. In addition, three Nb samples prepared with different surface treatments were studied before and after being subjected to plasma processing. The scope is investigating the microscopic effect that the reactive oxygen contained in the glow discharge may have on the niobium surface. This study suggests that the Nb 2 O 5 thickness may increase. Nevertheless, since the Nb 2 O 5 is dielectric, its thickening would not negatively affect the cavity performance.
