Heavy ion irradiation effects on CrFeMnNi and AlCrFeMnNi high entropy alloys

Co-free but Al-included medium/high entropy alloys (M/HEAs) have gained increasing interests due to their lower cost and the potential to tune the multi-phase microstructure. The irradiation response of two Co-free HEAs, face-centered cubic (FCC) CrFeMnNi with limited Cr enriched α' phase and body-centered cubic (BCC) AlCrFeMnNi with B2s phase and nanoprecipitates were explored. Ion irradiations using 5 MeV Fe 2+ ions were performed at 500°C to a peak fluence of 50 and/or 100 displacements per atom (dpa). In dual-phase AlCrFeMnNi, there was no significant radiation induced segregation or chemical intermixing at the coherent matrix (FeCrMn-rich)/second phase (AlNi-rich) boundaries. In CrFeMnNi, limited voids were only detected at the peak damage location of ~ 50 dpa. On the other hand, voids were widely distributed in AlCrFeMnNi: under 50 and 100 dpa irradiation conditions, voids were found with larger dimension and denser distribution in the FeCrMn-rich matrix, smaller and slightly lower density in an AlNi-rich second phase. In addition, the diameter of the FeCMn-rich nanoprecipitates didn't reveal any tendency of dissolution or growth. This is correlated with their superior structural stability against irradiation. Significant radiation-induced hardening (increases from 3.8 ± 0.2 GPa to 4.7 ± 0.6 GPa) was measured in CrFeMnNi, but only ~ 4% hardness increase (from 7.4 ± 0.8 GPa to 7.7 ± 0.4 GPa) was noted in AlCrFeMnNi. Finally, in addition to the radiation-induced defects, such as voids, dislocation loops and point defects, other factors, such as chemical short-range ordering may play an important role.

Investigation of W-SiC compositionally graded films as a divertor material

W-SiC composite material is a promising plasma-facing material candidate alternative to pure W due to the low neutron activation, low impurity radiation, and low tritium diffusivity of SiC while leveraging the high erosion resistance of the W armor. Additionally, W and SiC have high thermomechanical compatibility given their similar thermal expansion rates. The present study addresses the synthesis and performance of compositionally graded W-SiC films fabricated by pulsed-DC magnetron sputtering. Compositional gradients were characterized using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and crystallographic information was obtained using electron diffraction and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Samples were exposed to L-mode deuterium plasma discharges in the DIII-D tokamak using the Divertor Material Evaluation System (DiMES). Post-mortem characterizations were performed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and XRD. Electron diffraction and XRD showed that the compositionally graded W-SiC films were composed of polycrystalline W and amorphous SiC with amorphous W+SiC interlayers. No macroscopic delamination or microstructural changes were observed under mild exposure conditions. Here, this study serves as a preliminary examination of W-SiC compositionally graded composites as a potential candidate divertor material in future tokamak devices.

(CrMnCoNiZn) 3 O 4 @PPy core-shell nanocomposite with excellent electrochemical performance as lithium-ion battery anode

High entropy oxides (HEOs) have an excellent potential for use as electrode materials in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) due to their high theoretical specific capacity. In this work, spinel-structured (CrMnCoNiZn) 3 O 4 HEO nanoparticles with five elements in equal molar ratio is first generated by solution combustion method. (CrMnCoNiZn) 3 O 4 @polypyrrole (PPy) nanocomposites are prepared by in-situ polymerization method. As an anode for lithium-ion batteries, the electrochemical performance of the (CrMnCoNiZn) 3 O 4 @PPy composite outperforms that of (CrMnCoNiZn) 3 O 4 nanoparticles. The capacity is 802 mAh/g after 100 cycles at a current density of 100 mA/g, 416 mAh/g after 1000 cycles at a high current density of 1 A/g, and 360 mAh/g rate capacity at 2 A/g. The excellent electrochemical performance of the composites is mainly due to the fact that the conductive and flexible PPy is encapsulated on the high-entropy oxides, which can alleviate the volume change triggered by extraction-insertion of lithium ions process, as well as enhance the electrical conductivity and reduce the occurrence of some side reactions. Finally, this method of compositing materials can also be used in other HEOs and conductive polymers, providing a new idea to enhance the electrochemical properties of HEOs.

A universal and facile approach for building multifunctional conjugated polymers for human-integrated electronics

Polymer semiconductors have shown distinct promise for the development of human- integrated electronics, owing to their solution processability and mechanical softness. However, numerous functional properties required for this application domain face synthetic challenges to be imparted onto conjugated polymers and thus combined with efficient charge- transport property. Here, we develop a “click-to-polymer” (CLIP) synthesis strategy for conjugated polymers, which uses a click reaction for the facile and versatile attachment of diverse types of functional units to a pre-synthesized conjugated-polymer precursor. With four types of functional groups, we show that functionalized polymers from this CLIP method can still retain good charge-carrier mobility. Here, we take two realized polymers to showcase the photo-patternable property and biochemical sensing function, both of which advance the state of the art of realizing these two types of functions on conjugated polymers. We expect the expanded use of this synthesis approach can largely enrich the functional properties from conjugated polymers.

Intrinsically stretchable neuromorphic devices for on-body processing of health data with artificial intelligence

For leveraging wearable technologies to advance precision medicine, personalized and learning-based analysis of continuously acquired health data is indispensable, for which neuromorphic computing could provide the most efficient implementation of artificial intelligence (AI) data processing. For realizing on-body neuromorphic computing, skin-like stretchability is required, but yet to be combined with the suite of desired neuromorphic metrics, including linear, symmetric weight update, and sufficient state retention, for achieving high computing efficiency. Here, we report an intrinsically stretchable neuromorphic device based on an electrochemical transistor, which provides a large number (>800) of states, linear/symmetric weight update, excellent switching endurance (>100 million), good state retention (>10 4 s), together with high stretchability of 100% strain. Further integration into a prototype array successfully realized the implementation of vector-matrix multiplication even at 100% strain. Finally, we demonstrate the feasibility of implementing AI-based classification of health signals (as exemplified by electrocardiograms) with a high accuracy that is minimally influenced by the stretched state of the neuromorphic hardware. Finally, this work breaks the ground for combining AI data analysis into skin-like wearable electronics for achieving human-integrated/mimetic intelligent systems.

Fracture resistance of hierarchical Cu–Mo nanocomposite thin films

We report the fracture behavior of high-temperature co-sputtered Cu/Mo nanocomposite thin films was investigated through in situ 3-point bend testing of pre-notched microbeams in SEM. The as-synthesized nanocomposites present hierarchical nano/microstructures composed of a matrix of phase-separated Cu–Mo with nanoscale ligaments dispersed with sub-micron scale Cu-rich islands containing Mo nano-precipitates. Results show a significant crack growth resistance in the hierarchical nanocomposite, several times higher than that measured in Cu/Mo nanoscale multilayers. Based on electron microscopy characterization, three mechanisms of crack growth resistance in the hierarchical structures are proposed: crack bridging by the Cu-rich layer, crack deflection via shear along the Cu/Mo interface, and multiple cracking. This work demonstrates an approach to increase toughness in high strength nanocomposites through interface micro-structure design.

High temperature nanoindentation of Cu–TiN nanolaminates

Here, we examined the high temperature indentation response of physical vapor deposited Cu–TiN multilayered nanocomposites with layer thicknesses ranging from 5 nm to 200 nm. A decrease in hardness with increasing temperature was observed, along with a strong correlation between the hardness and the nanometer-level TiN grain sizes, rather than layer thickness. The apparent activation energies calculated from the high temperature indentation experiments indicated that, for all but the smallest layer thicknesses, the deformation of copper in the nanolaminates dominate the plastic response in these composites. In the finest layer thicknesses, a decrease in the apparent activation energy value indicated possible co-deformation of Cu and TiN.
