Space station (modular) mission analysis. Volume 1: Mission analysis

The mission analysis on the modular space station considers experimental requirements and options characterized by low initial cost and incremental manning. Features that affect initial development and early operating costs are identified and their impacts on the program are assessed. Considered are the areas of experiment, mission, operations, information management, and long life and safety analyses.

Mission analysis for design of a SEP multi-mission spacecraft.

Study of the multimission capability of a solar electric propulsion spacecraft. The study includes such factors as spacecraft constraints, payload variations with launch opportunity, propellant on-loading and off-loading requirements, and limitations in thrusting time, throttling range and steering. The study determined that a single spacecraft design, with P sub zero = 12 kW and I sub s = 3000 sec launched by a Titan IIIC or Titan IIID/Centaur can be used to conduct at least five diverse missions: Eros rendezvous, 1 AU out-of-ecliptic, Mercury orbiter, Jupiter flyby/probe, and Jupiter orbiter. Flight time and injection velocity vary as needed to achieve the desired payload capability. The mission analysis approach and results are presented.

Meteorological and operational aspects of 46 clear air turbulent sampling missions with an instrumented B-57B aircraft. Volume 2, appendix C: Turbulence missions

The results of 46 clear air turbulence (CAT) probing missions conducted with an extensively instrumented B-57B aircraft are summarized from a meteorological viewpoint in a two-volume technical memorandum. The missions were part of the NASA Langley Research Center's MAT (Measurement of Atmospheric Turbulence) program, which was conducted between March 1974, and September 1975, at altitudes ranging up to 15 km. Turbulence samples were obtained under diverse conditions including mountain waves, jet streams, upper level fronts and troughs, and low altitude mechanical and thermal turbulence. CAT was encountered on 20 flights comprising 77 data runs. In all, approximately 4335 km were flown in light turbulence, 1415 km in moderate turbulence, and 255 km in severe turbulence during the program.

Aerodynamic mission concepts for the Mars sample return mission

Future plans for the continued exploration of Mars call for a sample return mission. This plan proposes bringing a distributed, selected sample of Mars material from several locales on Mars back to earth. The mission options studied to date utilize an extensive number of aerodynamic concepts not previously planned in past planetary exploration programs. These include various modes of orbit modification using atmospheric braking, aeromaneuvering to effect precision surface landing, very low ballistic entry for a network of surface penetrators, low flying hydrazine powered airplanes, balloons, ascent vehicles and direct entry of the samples on return to earth. This paper will discuss the concepts and their feasibility along with technology problems associated with them as surveyed from the reference material. The paper focuses primarily on the aerocapture technique as it relates to Mars orbit modification. Remaining orbit modification techniques are also discussed briefly for comparison.

Mission peculiar equipment /MPE/ for Spacelab Mission 1 payload

A variety of payload integrator-furnished, Mission Peculiar Equipment (MPE) has been incorporated by the Spacelab Mission 1 payload complement in order to satisfy each payload developer's interface and service requirements. Attention is given to the design features of secondary structures, the NASA Experiment Power Branching Distributor and ESA Junction Box, module cabling and vent lines, and passive thermal protection. A major task to be fulfilled during payload integration is the satisfaction of all instrument and facility servicing requirements without mutual interference.

The OSTA-1 mission - Overview of the goals, mission parameters and instrumentation for the first Shuttle scientific payload

Aspects of the second Space Shuttle flight, which carried the first payload of scientific instruments for remote sensing of the earth's atmosphere, oceans, and land areas, are discussed. The development and integration of the payload, the mission simulations and end-to-end testing, the launch, the payload mission operations, the landing, data removal, and payload removal, the scientific results, and some planned experiments using the Shuttle are addressed. Summaries of the experimental results are presented, including those for the imaging radar, infrared radiometer, ocean color experiment, air pollution measurements, feature identification and location experiment, night/day optical lightning survey, and bioengineering test. The availability of data and science reports is also covered.
