Low intensity X-ray and gamma-ray spectrometer

A low intensity X-ray and gamma ray spectrometer for imaging, counting, and energy resolving of single invisible radiation particles is described. The spectrometer includes a converting device for converting single invisible radiation particles to visible light photons. Another converting device converts the visible light photons to photoelectrons. A fiber optics coupling device couples together the two converting devices. An intensifying device intensifies the photoelectrons by an average gain factor of between 10 to the 4th power and 10 to the 7th power. The tensifying device is an anti-ion feedback microchannel plate amplifier which is operated substantially below saturation. A displaying device displays the intensified photoelectrons. The displaying device 32 indicates the spatial position, number, and energy of the incoming single invisible radiation particles.

Photon-counting array detectors for space and ground-based studies at ultraviolet and vacuum ultraviolet /VUV/ wavelengths

The Multi-Anode Microchannel Arrays (MAMAs) are a family of photoelectric photon-counting array detectors, with formats as large as (256 x 1024)-pixels that can be operated in a windowless configuration at vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) and soft X-ray wavelengths or in a sealed configuration at ultraviolet and visible wavelengths. This paper describes the construction and modes of operation of (1 x 1024)-pixel and (24 x 1024)-pixel MAMA detector systems that are being built and qualified for use in sounding-rocket spectrometers for solar and stellar observations at wavelengths below 1300 A. The performance characteristics of the MAMA detectors at ultraviolet and VUV wavelengths are also described.

The depletion of calcium in the Rho Ophiuchi cloud

Data on the interstellar Ca II H and K lines toward HD 147889, a star deeply embedded in the rho Ophiuchi dark cloud, were obtained at the Mauna Kea Observatory of the University of Hawaii, using a multi-anode microchannel array (MAMA) detector. An upper limit on the Ca II column density of 1.7 x 10 to the 11th/sq cm was derived, which, together with ionization considerations and an estimated lower limit on the total hydrogen column density, implies that the calcium-to-hydrogen ratio in this line of sight is 0.00000795 or less, relative to the solar value. The logarithmic depletion is up to -5.10, the largest yet measured, and implies that gas-grain interaction in this region has proceeded to a much greater degree than is typical of diffuse clouds.

X-ray spectrograph design

An aberration theory is applied to spectrograph design. The initial system considered has a toroidal mirror in front of a concave grating spectrograph, giving spatial resolution perpendicular to the dispersion direction. The accuracy of the theory is shown by comparison of spot diagrams obtained from the aberrations with those produced by raytracing. The major aberrations affecting the vignetting at the intermediate slit and the spatial resolution are identified. A new system, using a holographic grating to give a flat focal plane, is then designed and optimized. It has increased spatial resolution over the wavelength range and is particularly suitable for microchannel array detectors.

Observational evidence for solar wind acceleration at the base of coronal holes

An EUV spectrometer with a microchannel plate detector was developed to measure Doppler shifts of coronal and transition region lines. The results of three sounding rocket fights of this instrument indicate that EUV resonance emission lines are systematically shifted toward shorter wavelength within coronal holes. This "blue-shift" signature, first identified within compact low latitude holes, was also observed in a well developed polar coronal hole. The maximum measured shift within these coronal holes corresponds to a velocity relative to the remaining solar disc of 12 km/s in lambda 625 Mg X T to the approximately 10 to the 6.15 K power and 7 km /s/ in lambda 629 OV (T to the approximately 10 to the 5.4 K power). The existing data indicate that these blue-shifts are a common (and possibly universal) signature of coronal holes. These data provide important information on the acceleration of coronal plasma in open magnetic field regions, although the interpretation of observed Doppler shifts to derive a systematic mass flux is to some extent model dependent. A straightforward hypothesis is that the blueshift signature is a direct manifestation of the high speed solar wind deep within the transition region and inner corona.

An extreme ultraviolet spectrometer experiment for the Shuttle Get Away Special Program

An extreme ultraviolet (EUV) spectrometer experiment operated successfully during the STS-7 mission in an experiment to measure the global and diurnal variation of the EUV airglow. The spectrometer is an F 3.5 Wadsworth mount with mechanical collimator, a 75 x 75 mm grating, and a bare microchannel plate detector providing a spectral resolution of 7 X FWHM. Read-out of the signal is through discrete channels or resistive anode techniques. The experiment includes a microcomputer, 20 Mbit tape recorder, and a 28V, 40 Ahr silver-zinc battery. It is the first GAS payload to use an opening door. The spectrometer's 0.1 x 4.2 deg field of view is pointed vertically out of the shuttle bay. During the STS-7 flight data were acquired continuously for a period of 5 hours and 37 minutes, providing spectra of the 570 A to 850 A wavelength region of the airglow. Five diurnal cycles of the 584 A emission of neutral helium and the 834 A emission of ionized atomic oxygen were recorded. The experiment also recorded ion events and pressure pulses associated with thruster firings. The experiment is to fly again on Mission 41-F.

Image plane detector for the dynamics explorer Fabry-Perot interferometer

A compact twelve-channel photon-counting device based on existing Generation II imaging technology has been developed for use as the image-plane detector of the Dynamics Explorer Fabry-Perot interferometer. The device has an S-20 photocathode, three-microchannel plate electron multiplication stages, and an equal-area concentric-ring segmented anode whose geometry mimics that of the interference ring pattern produced by a plane etalon. The twelve channels sample equal and contiguous intervals in the spectrum. The purpose of the delopment has been to utilize the signal multiplex advantage of a multichannel detector in the measurement of Doppler shifts and line-broadening effects for naturally occurring atmospheric emission features of low intensity. The design, testing, calibration, and flight performance of the novel detector system are presented. In addition, measured emission line profiles at high resolution from the satellite instrument are presented to illustrate the operation of the device.

Atmospheric emissions photometric imaging experiment

The atmospheric emissions photometric imaging experiment was flown on Spacelab 1 to study faint natural and artificial atmospheric emission phenomena. The instrument imaged optical emission in the region 2000 to 7500 angstroms with a television system consisting of two optical channels, one wide-angle and one telephoto. A third optical channel imaged onto the photocathode of a microchannel plate photomultiplier tube that has 100 discrete anodes. A hand-held image intensifier camera with an objective grating permitted spectral analysis of the earth's airglow and the Shuttle glow. Preliminary data show magnesium ion emission features in the lower ionosphere as well as the spacecraft glow spectrum.

The S201 far-ultraviolet imaging survey - A summary of results and implications for future surveys

The results from all-sky surveys with the S201 FUV camera/spectrograph from the moon during the Apollo 16 mission are summarized with respect to implications for future UV all-sky surveys. The scans provided imagery of 10 fields, each 20 deg in diameter, in the wavelength ranges 1050-1600 A and 1250-1600 A. Best detection thresholds were obtained with 10 and 30 min exposures at 1400 A. Only 7 percent sky coverage was recorded, and then only down to 11th mag. A Mark II camera may be flown on the Shuttle on the Spartan 3 mission, as may be an all-reflector Schmidt telescope. An additional 20 percent of the sky will be mapped and microchannel intensification will increase the diffuse source sensitivity by two orders of magnitude. Several objects sighted with the S201 will be reviewed with the Mark II.

Measuring EUV Line Emission from the Hot Interstellar Medium

In the local interstellar medium, the presence of hot gas was inferred from measurements of oxygen VI absorption in the ultraviolet, and from diffuse emission in the extreme ultraviolet (EUV) and soft X-ray regions. A spectrometer that is very sensitive to gas in this temperature range is described. The spectrometer uses an array of plane ruled gratings at grazing incidence in the extreme off plane mount. A set of Kirkpatrick-Baez mirrors focuses the conically diffracted light on to one of two microchannel plate detectors. The field of view of the instrument is 0.2 deg by 12 deg. The predicted sensitivity ranges from 50 to 200 ph/(sq cm sec str) with a resolving power of 15 to 50 over the 50 to 700 angstrom wavelength band.

The evaluation of a deformable diffraction grating for a stigmatic EUV spectroheliometer

Two crucial areas in the development of the high resolution EUV spectroheliometer are the elastically deformable toroidal diffraction grating and the open-structure imaging pulse counting detector system. The optical performance of a high frequency toroidal grating at EUV wavelengths was verified with a 3600 groove/mm master grating on a spherical concave blank. An open-structure (256 x 1024) pixel, multi-anode microchannel array was developed and tested as a pulse counting detector system. These two systems verify the proof of concept of the spectroheliometer design.

Photon-counting image sensors for the ultraviolet

An investigation on specific performance details of photon counting, ultraviolet image sensors having 2-dimensional formats is reviewed. In one study, controlled experiments were performed which compare the quantum efficiencies, in pulse counting mode, of CsI photocathodes deposited on: (1) the front surface of a microchannel plate (MCP), (2) a solid surface in front of an MCP, and (3) an intensified CCD image sensor (ICCD) where a CCD is directly bombarded by accelerated photoelectrons. Tests indicated that the detection efficiency of the CsI-coated MCP at 1026 A is lower by a factor of 2.5 than that of the MCP with a separate, opaque CsI photocathode, and the detection efficiency ratio increases substantially at longer wavelengths (ratio is 5 at 1216 A and 20 at 1608 A).

The Hopkins ultraviolet telescope

The Shuttle is scheduled to carry the Hopkins UV Telescope (HUT) aloft in 1986. HUT will be one of three telescopes on the mission and will be sensitive to the 450-1800 A interval. Its primary goals will be observations of Halley's Comet, the planets, distant galaxies and quasars. It will be controlled by Spacelab personnel and features a 0.9 m primary mirror, a spectrograph on the focal plane, and an Si intensified image television camera for on-line image monitoring. The main component of the spectrograph will be a 1024 channel self-scanning Reticon photodiode array coupled by optic fibers to the microchannel detector plates. HUT is presently undergoing qualification testing.

Calcium depletion toward moderately reddened stars

Calcium depletions toward five moderately reddened (E/B - V/ greater than 0.35 and less than 0.45) stars and toward HD 147889, a heavily reddened (E/B - V/ = 1.08) member of the Rho Ophiuchi cloud complex is reported. A developmental Multi-Anode Microchannel Array Detector was used to collect the data; its performance is characterized. Comparing the results for calcium from one line of sight to another and to those for other species, it is found that calcium exhibits a depletion pattern remarkably similar to that of silicon. The depletion of iron, on the other hand, has smaller variations and therefore does not correlate as well. Also, the depletion results for manganese and sulfur, both normally undepleted in diffuse clouds, have been included for comparison.

Support of the balloon-borne ultraviolet stellar spectrograph

A (256 x 1024)-pixel imaging ultraviolet Multi-mode Microchannel Array (MAMA) detector system for flight was fabricated, evaluated, and environmentally tested for flight on the Balloon Borne Ultraviolet Stellar Spectrograph (BUSS). The goal of the program was to replace the existing SEC Vidicon with the pulse-counting MAMA detector in order to, first, improve the overall sensitivity of the BUSS telescope and spectrograph for observations of stars down to m sub v = 7 and fainter, and, second, to improve the spectral resolution and wavelength accuracy by eliminating the image drifts in the Vidicon caused by magnetic field effects. A sealed MAMA detector tube structure employing a remotely processed photocathode mounted on a window in proximity focus with the front face of the MCP was developed to avoid contamination produced by a noisy and unstable device. The configuration of the BUSS detector system in its flight ready configuration is shown. The quantum efficiency curve for the semi-transparent Cs2Te photocathode is also shown.
