Implementing a Hardware Testbed Using 3-Level ANPC Software Defined Inverters for Fault Analysis of a Transmission Network

In this paper, we propose the implementation of a hardware testbed using 3-level active neutral point clamped (ANPC) software-defined inverters for fault analysis. A test case transmission network equipped with two grid forming (GFM) inverters and four resistive loads is considered in this research. Firstly, grid forming control laws including PI feedback control and droop control are implemented to operate the inverters in parallel. Then, we implement a fault ride-through (FRT) logic and perform a simulation of the test system by applying a three-phase fault. Simulation results show the effectiveness of the fault recovery algorithm upon clearance of the fault. Finally, a 3-level ANPC software-defined inverter is programmed with required control laws and characterized through various lab experiments.

Novel Hybrid Current Limiter for Grid-Forming Inverter Control During Unbalanced Faults

Grid-forming (GFM) inverter controls have illustrated many desirable features to enable the bulk integration of renewable resources into the future power grid; however, the performance of GFM inverters during unbalanced faults remains underexplored. This paper proposes a novel current-limiting method for GFM inverters to handle unbalanced fault conditions while providing voltage support to the main grid. The proposed current limiter combines concepts of dynamic virtual-impedance and current-reference saturation limiting, all built in the stationary reference frame, to achieve improved current-limiting performance under unbalanced load/fault conditions. System-wide full-order transient simulations with multiple GFM inverters demonstrate the potential of the method and benchmark the performance against state-of-the-art current limiters. Simulation results portray improved voltage balancing performance of the proposed method compared to both current-reference saturation and virtual-impedance limiting.

Battery inverter experimental data

The increase in power electronic based generation sources require accurate modeling of inverters. Accurate modeling requires experimental data over wider operation range. We used 30 kW off-the-shelf grid following battery inverter in the experiments. We used controllable AC supply and controllable DC supply to emulate AC and DC side characteristics. The experiments were performed at NREL's Energy Systems Integration Facility. Inverter is tested under 100%, 75%, 50%, 25% load conditions. In the first dataset, for each operating condition, controllable AC source voltage is varied from 0.9 to 1.1 per unit (p.u) with a step value of 0.025 p.u while keeping the frequency at 60 Hz. In the second dataset, under similar load conditions (100%, 75%, 50%, 25% ), the frequency of the controllable AC source voltage was varied from 59 Hz to 61 Hz with a step value of 0.2 Hz. Voltage and frequency range is chosen based on inverter protection. Voltages and currents on DC and AC side are included in the dataset.

Development of Mission Profiles for Humidity Models in the Reliability Testing of PV Inverters: Preprint

To understand the impacts of humidity on PV inverters, mission profiles were developed to accurately describe the different processes and rates based on the environmental factors of temperature, relative humidity, and irradiance. The operating environment of the device introduces stress factors dependent on component temperature, relative humidity, and component voltage. The development of profiles started from looking at historical climate conditions at Cocoa, Florida, a hot and humid location. The profile developed from field location was compared with existing humidity test profiles in industrial and military standards to determine acceleration factors. Prior to the evaluation of the mission profiles, critical components in the PV inverter were identified based on vendor discussions along with failure modes of interest. The profiles considered in this study was demonstrated using a 4-kVA string inverter. The measurements from the devices were substituted in device manufacturer specified equation to determine the severity of each test. The severity of each test was compared against the severity of the 24-hour result to determine the acceleration factor of each test. The acceleration factors were determined to be over a range of 1.2-6 for the existing humidity tests from standards, when compared against the mission profile developed from field data. This optimal humidity/thermal profile will be passed to the IEC standards development for inverter qualification testing.

Spontaneous and Ion-Specific Formation of Inverted Bilayers at Air/Aqueous Interface

Developing better separation technologies for rare earth metals, an important aspect of a sustainable materials economy, is challenging due to their chemical similarities. Identifying molecular scale interactions that amplify the subtle differences between the rare earths can be useful in developing new separation technologies. Here, we describe ion-dependent monolayer to inverted bilayer transformation of extractant molecules at the air/aqueous interface. The inverted bilayers form with Lu 3+ ions but not with Nd 3+ . By introducing Lu 3+ ions to preformed monolayers, we extract kinetic parameters corresponding to the monolayer to inverted bilayer conversion. Further, temperature-dependent studies show Arrhenius behavior with an energy barrier of 40 kcal/mol. The kinetics of monolayer to inverted bilayer conversion is also affected by the character of the background anion, although anions are expected to be repelled from the interface. Our results show the outsized importance of ion-specific effects on interfacial structure and kinetics, pointing to their role in chemical separation methods.

Inverted Region in Bimolecular Electron Transfer in Solution Enabled by Delocalization

Rate constants for bimolecular electron transfer (ET) increased with driving force, -ΔG°, reached a plateau, and then decreased in an inverted region. This rate data was described well by electron transfer theory subject to a diffusion-controlled limit. These were for ET from radical anions of polydecylthiophene (P3DT) to a series of acceptors in THF solution. When the donor was the smaller anion of quaterthiophene (T4 •- ) the inverted region was much less prominent, and still less so for when the donor was the anion of bithiophene (T2 •- ). Description of the data using ET theory identifies smaller electronic couplings for the highly-delocalized P3DT anions as enabling the inverted behavior: The presence of a Marcus inverted region is a consequence of delocalized electronic states. The results of this study further imply that electronic couplings smaller than usually found for molecules in contact could boost efficiency of energy storage by electron transfer, and identifies size-mismatch as an important concept in control of electronic couplings.

Inverter Model Validation and Calibration Using Phasor Measurement Unit Data

As the penetration of inverter-based renewable energy resources increases in the power grid, especially at the distribution and microgrid levels, the need to accurately represent them in planning studies increases as well. However, due to the lack of well-established standard procedures, and vendor reluctance towards the detailed sharing of proprietary models, automated dynamic model validation and parameter calibration tools for inverter based resources (IBRs) remain scarce. This work presents a model validation and parameter calibration platform for representing IBRs with generic phasor-domain models. Phasor measurements of power system events are used for continuous validation using the data playback method, and model parameters are re-calibrated if a significant mismatch between measurements and model response is observed. Unique features of the proposed platform include- (a) an iterative Bayesian optimization approach towards parameter calibration to address a possible mismatch between the structures of generic models implemented in simulation softwares and actual commercial inverters, (b) error metrics designed to account for a possible mismatch between the time resolution of simulation and measurements, and (c) analysis of the measurement-simulation mismatch to provide guidance to engineering personnel regarding model shortcomings. The performance of the platform has been illustrated using both simulated data and field measurements to validate/calibrate inverter models in GridLAB-D.

Experimentation in Exploring Photovoltaic Inverter Dynamics Under Different Irradiance Levels Through a Data-Driven Approach

As conventional direct connections of synchronous generators are being phased out, inverter-based resources (IBRs) with grid support functions are increasingly being integrated into power systems. This transition requires the development of accurate dynamic models for IBRs to predict how power systems will adapt to varying levels of IBRs penetration, establish grid code requirements, and ensure compliance. Here, this study introduces an active probing signal-based data-driven modeling technique to accurately derive the dynamics model of a smart photovoltaic inverter operating in Volt-Watt and Freq-Watt modes, in compliance with the IEEE 1547–2018 standard. The paper focuses on investigating how the dynamics of the PV inverter model respond to fluctuations in solar irradiance, utilizing real-time digital simulator experimentation. The experimental analysis demonstrates that the amplitude of dynamics fluctuates with changes in irradiance across both operational modes and confirms the active power’s dependence on irradiance levels. Furthermore, the nature of inverter dynamics varies distinctly between the different modes of activation. Critically, our findings indicate that dynamic models require DC-gain adjustments to accommodate contrasting irradiance levels, highlighting a negative gradient linear relationship between the DC-gain of each model and the irradiance.

Grid-Forming Control Using TAPAS Software Defined Inverters

Here, this paper discusses the design and hardware implementation aspects of state-feedback primary control for grid forming inverters. The primary control consists of two tracking control laws: voltage tracking and frequency/angle tracking. The voltage tracking control requires voltage and current at the inverter's switch terminal (i.e. before the filter). The fundamental component of switch terminal voltage is estimated using the inverter's average model while the switch terminal current is estimated using an observer, thus obviating the need for sensors at the switch terminals. The measurements of frequency and angle(s) needed for frequency/angle tracking are noisy due to measurement noises and inherent delays in the phase locked loop (PLL). Conditioning of these feedback signals is discussed in detail, and the corresponding changes in the control design are provided to better attenuate the impact of noises. Effectiveness of the proposed design and implementation is demonstrated by the implementation results from TAPAS software defined inverter (SDI).

Improved Control Strategy of Grid-Forming Inverters for Fault Ride-Through in a Microgrid System

This paper develops an improved control strategy of grid-forming (GFM) inverters with fault ride-through capabilities to guarantee the stable operation of microgrids under fault conditions, especially islanded microgrids and asymmetrical faults. The proposed control strategy includes the dual control of positive-sequence and negative-sequence control as well as the adaptive virtual impedance (VI) control. Unlike existing works, the proposed strategy applies the VI control for only the d component of the positive-sequence control and leaves the q component of the positive-sequence control and the dq component of the negative-sequence control as zero, thus achieving improved stability and balanced three-phase voltages under asymmetrical faults. The adaptive feature of the VI control guarantees the stability of the GFM inverter under severe faults, which could cause the saturation of the inner current loop and instability if the VI is not adaptive. Simulation results of various unbalanced faults with high- and low-fault impedances show that the proposed control strategy improves the stability of the GFM inverter and achieves stable and balanced output voltages in islanded microgrids. And the algorithm also improves the stability of GFM inverters under balanced faults with high- and low-fault impedances.

Black-Starting Microgrids Using Inverter-Based Distributed Energy Resources

Recent trends in power systems show increasing deployment of inverter-based distributed energy resources (DERs) at the distribution level. Efforts have also been made to use inverter-based DERs for system restoration of critical sections of distribution feeders. In the past few years, there has been active consideration of using local grid-forming (GFM) DERs, which can form their own voltage and frequency, to black-start microgrids instead of waiting for the bulk system for supply restoration. However, using current-limited inverter-based DERs for black-start operations with high inrush currents can pose some technical challenges. This paper presents detailed electromagnetic transient studies on a digital real-time simulator to assess the operational feasibility of using local inverter-based GFM DERs for microgrid black-start operations as a bottom-up approach instead of a top-down approach where the substation is used to restore critical sections of the feeder. The paper presents key modeling details for distribution system components for studying GFM DER-based microgrid black-start operations. The paper presents simulation results comparing different black-start approaches using GFM DERs for two test systems: i) a simple test microgrid and ii) a real-world utility microgrid currently being designed and deployed by Holy Cross Energy in Colorado.

Small-Signal Stability of Grid-Forming Inverters Using Current-Limiting and Frequency Stabilization

This paper presents a small-signal stability analysis of grid-forming (GFM) inverters under current-limiting conditions. It examines how adjustments in virtual impedance angles, implemented through advanced current-limiting and frequency stabilization techniques, influence small-signal stability. This paper studies a GFM inverter control integrating a fictitious power technique stabilizing primary control by adding a virtual power term and a hybrid current limiter integrating virtual impedance in the anti-wind-up feedback with current reference saturation limiting. A small-signal model is developed to assess the impact of virtual impedance angles on GFM inverter dynamics during grid disturbances, such as voltage drops. The findings indicate that although increasing the virtual impedance angle (to make it more inductive) enhances large-signal stability and voltage support during faults, it can induce oscillations and lead to instability if the angle exceeds certain thresholds. Based on the small-signal models, this paper provides design considerations for the current-limiter impedances to ensure reliable GFM inverter behavior under grid disturbances while maintaining small-signal stability.

Disruption of Commercial Solar Inverter System by TLS Proxy Man-in-the-Middle Attack

Transport Layer Security (TLS) is a cryptographic protocol that encrypts communication data, providing end-to-end communication encryption and authentication. Currently, TLS is widely adopted for securing communication between servers and end devices, including solar inverter systems. Therefore, users/operators can securely access the solar inverters through a web user interface (WebUI) application programmable interface (API) on a PC or server over TLS-enabled Wi-Fi or Ethernet. However, the security of the TLS-based network becomes compromised if it is breached by a TLS proxy man-in-the-middle (MITM) exploit. This report explores potential vulnerabilities in a commercial solar inverter system that leverages a TLS proxy MITM and discusses the impacts through assume-breached penetration testing. Furthermore, the paper explores recommended mitigation methods against the TLS proxy MITM exploit in solar inverters.

Frequency Resilience Enhancement for Power Systems with High Penetration of Grid-Forming Inverters

Abstract—Grid following inverter-based renewable generation has replaced conventional generation in recent years, resulting in lower system inertia. The frequency resilience in such a lower inertia system is critical for emergency mitigation. In this paper, we propose a resilience metric based on frequency recovery to quantitatively represent system resilience in terms of the rate of change of frequency. Application of grid-forming converters provides a means to improve system resilience by providing virtual inertia. An under-frequency load shedding strategy is applied to further support frequency recovery in cases with high penetration of grid-forming inverters. Case studies are designed and performed in a modified IEEE 9-bus test system using the PSCAD/EMTDC platform. Simulation results demonstrate the validity of the proposed resilience metric and the effectiveness of the strategy for reducing frequency excursion in inverter-based power systems. citation: J.
