Intermetallic alloy structure–activity descriptors derived from inelastic X-ray scattering
Synchrotron spectroscopy and Density Functional Theory (DFT) are combined to develop a new descriptor for the stability of adsorbed chemical intermediates on metal alloy surfaces. This descriptor probes the separation of occupied and unoccupied d electron density in platinum and is related to shifts in Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering (RIXS) signals. Simulated and experimental spectroscopy are directly compared to show that the promoter metal identity controls the orbital shifts in platinum electronic structure. The associated RIXS features are correlated with the differences in the band centers of the occupied and unoccupied d bands, providing chemical intuition for the alloy ligand effect and providing a connection to traditional descriptions of chemisorption. The ready accessibility of this descriptor to both DFT calculations and experimental spectroscopy, and its connection to chemisorption, allow for deeper connections between theory and characterization in the discovery of new catalysts.

Charge Density Wave in Kagome Lattice Intermetallic ScV 6 Sn 6
Materials hosting kagome lattices have drawn interest for the diverse magnetic and electronic states generated by geometric frustration. In the AV 3 Sb 5 compounds (A=K, Rb, Cs), stacked vanadium kagome layers give rise to unusual charge density waves (CDW) and superconductivity. In this work, we report single-crystal growth and characterization of ScV 6 Sn 6 , a hexagonal HfFe 6 Ge 6 -type compound that shares this structural motif. We identify a first-order phase transition at 92 K. Single crystal x-ray and neutron diffraction reveal a charge density wave modulation of the atomic lattice below this temperature. This is a distinctly different structural mode than that observed in the AV 3 Sb 5 compounds, but both modes have been anticipated in kagome metals. The diverse HfFe 6 Ge 6 family offers more opportunities to tune ScV 6 Sn 6 and explore density wave order in kagome lattice materials.
Magnetic phase diagram and multiple field-induced states in the intermetallic triangular-lattice antiferromagnet NdAuAl 4 Ge 2 with Ising-like spins
Geometrical frustration and the enhancement of strong quantum fluctuations in two-dimensional triangular antiferromagnets can lead to various intriguing phenomena. Here, in this work, we studied the spin-1/2 triangular lattice antiferromagnet NdAuAl 4 Ge 2 . Thermodynamic and transport properties, such as magnetization and specific heat together with the resistivity measurements were performed. In zero field, two successive phase transitions were observed at T N1 = 1.75 ± 0.02 and T N2 = 0.49 ± 0.02 K, respectively. Under magnetic field, XXZ-type anisotropy was revealed with the moments pointing along the easy c axis. For B∥c, multiple field-induced states were observed, and the magnetic phase diagram was established based on the specific-heat and magnetization data. The temperature-dependent resistivity measurements indicate that NdAuAl 4 Ge 2 is a good metal. It is very likely that both the long-range Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida interactions and the geometrical frustration play important roles in this case.

Electronic landscape of the f -electron intermetallics with the ThCr 2 Si 2 structure
Although strongly correlated f -electron systems are well known as reservoirs for quantum phenomena, a persistent challenge is to design specific states. What is often missing are simple ways to determine whether a given compound can be expected to exhibit certain behaviors and what tuning vector(s) would be useful to select the ground state. In this review, we address this question by aggregating information about Ce, Eu, Yb, and U compounds with the ThCr 2 Si 2 structure. We construct electronic/magnetic state maps that are parameterized in terms of unit cell volumes and d -shell filling, which reveals useful trends including that (i) the magnetic and nonmagnetic examples are well separated, and (ii) the crossover regions harbor the examples with exotic states. These insights are used to propose structural/chemical regions of interest in these and related materials, with the goal of accelerating discovery of the next generation of f -electron quantum materials.
In Operando XANES Imaging of High Capacity Intermetallic Anodes for Lithium Ion Batteries
In operando 2D X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) imaging was performed near the Cu K-edge during cycling of Cu 6 Sn 5 composite anodes for lithium ion batteries. Galvanostatic lithiation and delithiation with intermittent constant voltage holds near reaction plateaus show evolution of absorption spectra for active material particles. XANES spectra obtained from images taken during cycling were compared to standard spectra for Cu, Cu 6 Sn 5 , and Li 2 CuSn. Chemical composition was assessed for Cu-containing phases. Distinct Cu, Cu 6 Sn 5 , and Li 2 CuSn regions were identified for each voltage plateau. Mechanical degradation, electrode particle fracture and expansion were observed during delithiation. Furthermore, movement of particles during cycling suggests that expansion also impacts the supporting secondary phases and the transport networks therein. These results demonstrate that spectroscopic X-ray imaging methods can clearly distinguish chemically distinct phases in alloy electrodes and have the versatility to observe the evolution of these phases during lithiation and delithiation.

Intermetallic PtCo Catalysts with Enhanced Performance and Stability [Slides]
Pt-based catalysts need systematic modifications to be adapted to different applications (LDV or HDV). L1 0 -CoPt particles have been demonstrated as highly active and durable cathode materials for fuel cells. Colloidal synthesis can generate catalysts with highly uniform particles size but the removal of surfactants is challenging. Acid leaching warrants a Pt shell with certain thickness, which mitigates the Co leaching. Controlling the size of L1 0 -CoPt particles is a robust method to alter their catalytic behaviours and tailor the function of catalysts. Modifying the carbon features (e.g. porosity and graphitization) is an effective method to regulate the performance and stability of catalysts to adapt the catalysts to different applications.
Ab Initio Simulations of Tritium Diffusion in Al 2 O and Intermetallic Al 12 (TM) 2.34 Aluminide Coating Phases
Density functional theory simulations have been carried out to investigate the diffusion of interstitial tritium in Al 12 (TM) 2.34 and Al 2 O bulk phases. In Al 12 (TM) 2.34 the transition metal (TM) sites are occupied on average by 58.93 at.% Fe, 18.52 at.% Cr, and 22.54 at.% Ni. While the insertion of interstitial tritium in Al 2 O lead to a strong disordering of the structure, we only investigated interstitial tritium in Al 12 (TM) 2.34 and its iron end-member (i.e., Al 12 Fe 2.34 ). Nine diffusion pathways have been investigated along the a-, b-, and c -axis of Al 12 (TM) 2.34 . The direction of fastest diffusion for interstitial tritium is found to be along the b-axis, with a calculated diffusion coefficient of ≈10 -10 m 2 .s -1 at 600 K, which is at least one order of magnitude faster than those previously calculated for interstitial tritium in other Al-rich phases such as Fe2Alx, Fe4Al13, and FeNiAl5 for which D T =10 -11 m 2 .s -1 , ≈10 -12 m 2 .s -1 , and D T ≈10 -13 m 2 .s -1 respectively. The comparison of the energy landscape between Al 12 (TM) 2.34 and Al 12 Fe 2.34 for the fastest diffusion pathways in each axis direction, found that some pathways are not sensitive to transition metal mixing, while other are more affected, leading to higher energy barrier in Al 12 Fe 2.34 in part due to a more energetically favorable formation of Fe—T bond compared to Ni—T. However, we found that both materials have similar diffusion coefficients as the fastest diffusion pathways occurs along pathways that are not very sensitive to transition metal mixing.
