This report contains a figure and caption. Left: Compton radiographs of a 3-shock HDC THD layered implosion recorded 10ps before and 160ps after bang-time (BT) at the NIF, using >50keV point projection backlighters generated by irradiating a 25μm-diameter Au wire with 30ps-long ARC pulses. Right: Reconstructed density distributions of fuel and remaining ablator showing significant 3D structure and top-down asymmetry.

For one-component materials, adding pickets to the pulse shape did not affect the viscosity substantially. While Be seems to be most effective in dampening instabilities while Cr is the least effective. In MD-simulation of TCP, LAMMPS TCP input deck was successfully verified against OCP simulation, and we successfully calculated the viscosity of a CH TCP for a range of Γ values.

At the National Ignition Facility (NIF), lasers are used to compress a double shell capsule with deuterium and tritium in order to create nuclear fusion processes. The lasers aim at the inside of a gold hohlraum which excite electrons which further release photons in the range of 0~20keV. The photons randomly disperse, ultimately either going towards the fuel capsule or back out the laser entrance holes. The photons that go towards the fuel capsule work towards the compression of the multi-shell capsule whereas the photons that leave the hohlraum have a chance at being picked up by the Lawrence Livermore National Lab’s ‘Dante’ photon detector. ‘Dante’ analyzes photon data by having 18 planar vacuum x-ray diodes (XRD) behind unique filters to differentiate data amongst various photon energies. The goal of the project was to analyze the characteristics of low and high energy photons released by the gold shell.

Large Planar targets with significant room for RTI evolution could have the potential to reach regimes where magnetic field damping of RTI is observable. Hot-electron generation at 1 PW/cm 2 and greater can introduced substantial preheat to experimental targets. Manufacturing defects can create further 3D complexity in targets designed and modeled in 2D. Computational models used in experimental designing do not always account for all the physics present and must be reevaluated based on experimental data. 3D modeling and provide high fidelity estimates on what the experimental data will look like, and can be utilized for high fidelity bench-marking or complex 3D experimental design work.

After a decade of trying, the grand challenge problem of achieving hot spot ignition on NIF has not been achieved using indirect-drive of a high-convergence single shell capsule inside a hohlraum. Here, the alternate concept of obtaining volume-like ignition of liquid DT fuel via multi-shell implosion using laser polar direct drive (PDD) on NIF was assessed through theoretical analysis, computer simulation, fabrication development and implosion experiments on both the Laboratory for Laser Energetics’ (LLE) Omega laser and the National Ignition Facility (NIF). This research has shown that multi-shell ignition has merit and should be further advanced by the National ICF Program to determine its ultimate limitations for achieving ignition on NIF.
