Quadratic performance index generation for optimal regular design.

Application of optimal control theory to practical problems has been limited by the difficulty of prescribing a performance index which accurately reflects design requirements. The task of deriving equivalent performance indices is considered in the present paper for a plant that is a completely controllable, scalar linear system with state feedback. A quadratic index is developed which leads to an optimal design performance satisfying some of the classical performance criteria.

Energy: A special bibliography with indexes, April 1974

This literature survey of special energy and energy related documents lists 1708 reports, articles, and other documents introduced into the NASA scientific and technical information system between January 1, 1968, and December 31, 1973. Citations from International Aerospace Abstracts (IAA) and Scientific and Technical Aerospace Reports (STAR) are grouped according to the following subject categories: energy systems; solar energy; primary energy sources; secondary energy sources; energy conversion; energy transport, transmission, and distribution; and energy storage. The index section includes the subject, personal author, corporate source, contract, report, and accession indexes.

Screening, cataloging and indexing of earth resource aircraft missions

Data obtained from 30 earth resources aircraft missions, flown between September 1, 1973 and September 1, 1974, were screened, cataloged, and indexed using microfilm copy. The manhours required for completing the task are presented, and problems encountered during the project are reported. It is concluded that a cataloging and indexing report of remote sensor data can be prepared on a timely basis for a relatively low cost from microfilm. Recommendations are given in order to further facilitate the task.

Flux-density-spectral-index relation of extragalactic radio sources

We have analyzed the spectral-index distribution of extragalactic radio sources and its variation with flux density and survey frequency. We find that the effect of K-correction on this variation (which if observed could imply that these sources are at cosmological distances) is small compared with observational uncertainties and other effects. We also derive a form for the intrinsic spectral distribution (assuming it to be independent of redshift and luminosity) which consists of two Gaussians with median spectral indices of about 0.8 and 0.4 and with dispersion of 0.25 and 0.4, respectively. The first class of sources is found in low-frequency surveys. The second class, consisting of only a few percent of all sources, appears in high-frequency surveys and has spectra-index distributions similar to sources identified with quasars.

Refractive index of plant cell walls

Air was replaced with media of higher refractive indices by vacuum infiltration in leaves of cucumber, blackeye pea, tomato, and string bean plants, and reflectance of noninfiltrated and infiltrated leaves was spectrophotometrically measured. Infiltrated leaves reflected less light than noninfiltrated leaves over the 500-2500-nm wavelength interval because cell wall-air interfaces were partly eliminated. Minimal reflectance should occur when the average refractive index of plant cell walls was matched by the infiltrating fluid. Although refractive indices that resulted in minimal reflectance differed among the four plant genera, an average value of 1.425 approximates the refractive index of plant cell walls for the four plant genera.

Experimental investigation of a simple distortion index utilizing steady-state and dynamic distortions in a Mach 2.5 mixed-compression inlet and turbofan engine

A wind tunnel investigation was conducted to determine the amplitude and spatial distribution of steady-state and dynamic distortion produced in an inlet with 45 percent of the overall supersonic area contraction occurring internally. It was found that the inlet support strut location and/or the overboard bypass flow rate has a significant effect on the spatial distribution of distortion. Because of this effect the majority of the stall points exhibited four-per-revolution patterns of distortion. Data from this test were used to formulate a simple index that combines steady-state and dynamic distortions. Distortion results obtained with this index correlated well with exhaust nozzle area. It is shown that the exhaust nozzle area of a TF30-P-3, as modified for use in this test, can be controlled in a scheme to avoid engine stall. A considerable increase in engine distortion tolerance can be achieved by opening the 7th-stage bleed. The engine exhibited higher tolerance to distortion for multiple patterns of distortion per-revolution than for a one-per-revolution pattern of distortion.

Multilevel control optimization using subsystem relative performance index sensitivity

A method is presented for the design of optimal feedback controllers for large multivariable systems with subsystem sensitivity constraints. The weighted sum of subsystem and/or operational mode relative performance index sensitivities is defined as the overall performance index. The method is developed for linear systems with quadratic performance criteria and either full or partial state feedback. An example concerning the design of a stability augmentation system for a VTOL aircraft in the transition mode demonstrates the effectiveness of the design method.

Mean effective size and refractive index of transparent atmospheric particulates

It is demonstrated that the scattering ratio-principle originally restricted to exact forward and exact backward scattering, and to values of the size parameter and of the product (refractive index x size parameter) less than 0.8 has a much wider applicability. After relaxing these stringent conditions, it is also shown that this principle can be retained as the basis of an experimental technique for retrieving the mean effective size and refractive index of transparent atmospheric particulates.

Complex refractive index of Martian dust - Mariner 9 ultraviolet observations

Mariner 9 ultraviolet spectrometer observations of the 1971 dust clouds obscuring the surface of Mars have been analyzed by matching the observed dust phase function with Mie scattering calculations for size distributions of homogeneous and isotropic material. Preliminary results indicate an effective particle radius of not less than 0.2. The real component of the index of refraction is not less than 1.8 at both 268 and 305 nm; corresponding values for the imagery component are 0.02 and 0.01. These values are consistent with those found by Mead (1970) for the visible and near-visible wavelengths. The refractive index and the absorption coefficient increase rapidly with decreasing wavelength in going from the visible to the ultraviolet, indicating the presence of an ultraviolet absorption band which may shield organisms from ultraviolet irradiation.

Refractive-index profile and physical process determination in thick gratings in electrooptic crystals

A method for determining the refractive index profile of thick phase gratings in linear electrooptic crystals is presented. This method also determines the effective photovoltaic electric field and the relative contributions of diffusion and drift during hologram recording. The method requires only a knowledge of the modulation ratio during hologram recording and the fundamental and the higher-order diffraction efficiencies of the grating. As an illustration of the method, the refractive index profile, the effective photovoltaic field, and the relative contributions of diffusion and drift are determined from experimental measurements for a lithium niobate holographic grating.

Mechanical parts used in conventional switches to index stepper motor that drives switch elements are replaced by optoelectronic indexing device that controls magnetic-detent motor. Unit eliminates major source of wear and maintains detent accuracy longer. Design of device achieves reduction of insertion loss, crosstalk, and wave guide reflections when receiving and transmitting.
