Test of Light-Lepton Universality in the Rates of Inclusive Semileptonic B-Meson Decays at Belle II

We present the first measurement of the ratio of branching fractions of inclusive semileptonic B -meson decays, R ( X e / μ ) = B ( B → X e ν ) / B ( B → X μ ν ) , a precision test of electron-muon universality, using data corresponding to 189 fb - 1 from electron-positron collisions collected with the Belle II detector. In events where the partner B meson is fully reconstructed, we use fits to the lepton momentum spectra above 1.3 GeV / c to obtain R ( X e / μ ) = 1.007 ± 0.009 ( stat ) ± 0.019 ( syst ) , which is the most precise lepton-universality test of its kind and agrees with the standard-model expectation.

First Measurement of R ( X τ / ℓ ) as an Inclusive Test of the b → c τ ν Anomaly

We measure the tau-to-light-lepton ratio of inclusive B -meson branching fractions R ( X τ / ℓ ) ≡ B ( B → X τ ν ) / B ( B → X ℓ ν ) , where ℓ indicates an electron or muon, and thereby test the universality of charged-current weak interactions. We select events that have one fully reconstructed B meson and a charged lepton candidate from 189 fb − 1 of electron-positron collision data collected with the Belle II detector. We find R ( X τ / ℓ ) = 0.228 ± 0.016 ( stat ) ± 0.036 ( syst ) , in agreement with standard-model expectations. This is the first direct measurement of R ( X τ / ℓ ) . Measurements of Normalized Differential Cross Sections of Inclusive η Production in e + e − Annihilation at Energy from 2.0000 to 3.6710 GeV

Using data samples collected with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII storage ring, the cross section of the inclusive process e + e − → η + X , normalized by the total cross section of e + e − → hadrons , is measured at eight center-of-mass energy points from 2.0000 to 3.6710 GeV. These are the first measurements with momentum dependence in this energy region. Our measurement shows a significant discrepancy compared to the existing fragmentation functions. To address this discrepancy, a new QCD analysis is performed at the next-to-next-to-leading order with hadron mass corrections and higher twist effects, which can explain both the established high-energy data and our measurements reasonably well. Jet Definition and Transverse-Momentum–Dependent Factorization in Semi-inclusive Deep-Inelastic Scattering

Using the color dipole picture of deep inelastic scattering (DIS) and the color glass condensate effective theory, we study semi-inclusive jet production in DIS at small x in the limit where the photon virtuality Q 2 is much larger than the transverse momentum squared P$^{2}_{⊥}$ of the produced jet. In this limit, the cross section is dominated by aligned jet configurations, that is, quark–antiquark pairs in which one of the fermions—the would-be struck quark in the Breit frame—carries most of the longitudinal momentum of the virtual photon. We show that physically meaningful jet definitions in DIS are such that the effective axis of the jet sourced by the struck quark is controlled by its virtuality rather than by its transverse momentum. For such jet definitions, we show that the next-to-leading order cross section admits factorization in terms of the (sea) quark transverse momentum dependent distribution, which in turn satisfies a universal Dokshitzer-Gribov-Lipatov-Altarelli-Parisi and Sudakov evolution.

Minimizing Selection Bias in Inclusive Jets in Heavy-Ion Collisions with Energy Correlators

The first-ever measurement of energy correlators within inclusive jets produced in heavy-ion collisions, revealed by the CMS Collaboration, shows a clear enhancement at large angles relative to the proton-proton (p-p) baseline. However, interpreting this enhancement is complicated due to selection bias from energy loss, which also distorts the energy correlator heavy-ion to p-p ratio in the hadronization region, hindering our understanding of parton/hadron dynamics in a colored medium. In this Letter, we introduce a new ratio of energy correlator observables that removes the leading effects of selection bias from the two-point energy correlator spectrum (E2C). PYTHIA and HERWIG simulations show that the impact of selection bias in the E2C is reduced by an order of magnitude, while sensitivity to any other medium modifications is retained. This quantity can be obtained directly from the experimental measurements presented by CMS, as illustrated in an accompanying note [C. Andres and J. Holguin, arXiv:2409.07526].

Ab initio study of ${(\nu_\ell,\ell^-)}$ and ${(\overline{\nu}_\ell,\ell^+)}$ inclusive scattering in $^{12}\hbox{C}$: confronting the MiniBooNE and $\hbox{T2K CCQE}$ data

We carry out an ab initio calculation of the neutrino flux-folded inclusive cross sections, measured on $^{12}$C by the MiniBooNE and T2K collaborations in the charged-current quasielastic regime. The calculation is based on realistic two- and three-nucleon interactions, and on a realistic nuclear electroweak current with one-and two-nucleon terms that are constructed consistently with these interactions and reproduce low-energy electroweak transitions. Numerically exact quantum Monte Carlo methods are utilized to compute the nuclear weak response functions, by fully retaining many-body correlations in the initial and final states and interference effects between one- and two-body current contributions. We employ a nucleon axial form factor of the dipole form with $\Lambda_A = 1.0$ or $1.15$ GeV, the latter more in line with a very recent lattice QCD determination. The calculated cross sections are found to be in good agreement with the neutrino data of MiniBooNE and T2K, and antineutrino MiniBooNE data, yielding a consistent picture of nuclei and their electroweak properties across a wide regime of energy and momenta.

Inclusive electron scattering in the resonance region off a hydrogen target with CLAS12

Inclusive electron scattering cross sections off a hydrogen target at a beam energy of 10.6 GeV have been measured with data collected from the CLAS12 spectrometer at Jefferson Laboratory. These first absolute cross sections from CLAS12 cover a wide kinematic area in invariant mass 𝑊 of the final state hadrons from the pion threshold up to 2.5 GeV for each bin in virtual photon four-momentum transfer squared 𝑄 2 from 2.55 to 10.4GeV 2 owing to the large scattering angle acceptance of the CLAS12 detector. Comparison of the cross sections with the resonant contributions computed from the CLAS results on the nucleon resonance electroexcitation amplitudes has demonstrated a promising opportunity to extend the information on their 𝑄 2 evolution up to 10 GeV 2 . Together these results from CLAS and CLAS12 offer good prospects for probing the nucleon parton distributions at large fractional parton momenta 𝑥 for 𝑊<2.5 GeV, while covering the range of distances where the transition from the strongly coupled to the perturbative regimes is expected.

Single-valued representation of unpolarized and polarized semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering at next-to-next-to-leading order

We revisit the recently published analytic results for unpolarized and polarized semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS) at next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) in quantum chromodynamics (QCD). These expressions for the hard scattering coefficients contain case distinctions in the kinematic (𝑥,𝑧)-plane, splitting the analytic result into four regions. By reexpressing the coefficient functions in terms of single-valued polylogarithms, we remove these case distinctions and can present a unified result valid across the entire kinematic range of SIDIS. This reduces the length of the overall expressions by 30% to 60%.

Flavor, transverse momentum, and azimuthal dependence of charged pion multiplicities in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering with 10.6 GeV electrons

Measurements of semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering multiplicities for 𝜋 + and 𝜋 − from proton and deuteron targets are reported on a grid of hadron kinematic variables 𝑧, 𝑃 𝑇 , and 𝜙* for leptonic kinematic variables in the range 0.3<𝑥<0.6 and 3<𝑄 2 <5GeV 2 . Data were acquired in 2018 and 2019 at Jefferson Lab Hall C with a 10.6 GeV electron beam impinging on 10-cm-long liquid hydrogen and deuterium targets. Scattered electrons and charged pions were detected in the High Momentum Spectrometer and Super High Momentum Spectrometer, respectively. The multiplicities were fitted for each bin in (𝑥,𝑄 2 ,𝑧,𝑃𝑡) to extract the 𝜙*—independent 𝑀 0 and the azimuthal modulations ⟨cos⁡(𝜙*)⟩ and ⟨cos⁡(2⁢𝜙*)⟩. The 𝑃𝑡 dependence of the 𝑀 0 results was found to be remarkably consistent for the four cases studied: 𝑒⁢𝑝→𝑒⁢𝜋 + ⁢𝑋, 𝑒⁢𝑝→𝑒⁢𝜋 − ⁢𝑋, 𝑒⁢𝑑→𝑒⁢𝜋 + ⁢𝑋, 𝑒⁢𝑑→𝑒⁢𝜋 − ⁢𝑋 over the range 0GeV<𝑃 𝑡 <0.4GeV, as were the multiplicities evaluated near 𝜙*=180∘ over the extended range 0GeV<𝑃 𝑡 <0.7GeV. The Gaussian widths of the 𝑃 𝑡 dependence exhibit a quadratic increase with 𝑧. The cos⁡(𝜙*) modulations were found to be consistent with zero for 𝜋 + , in agreement with previous world data, while the 𝜋 − moments were, in many cases, significantly greater than zero. The cos⁡(2⁢𝜙*) modulations were found to be consistent with zero. The higher statistical precision of this dataset of about 20 000 individual multiplicity values, compared with previously published data, should allow improved determinations of quark transverse momentum distributions and higher twist contributions.

Metasomatic alteration of coarse‐grained igneous calcium‐aluminum‐rich inclusions from CK3 carbonaceous chondrites

Abstract We report on the primary and secondary mineralogies of three coarse‐grained igneous calcium‐aluminum‐rich inclusions (CAIs) (Compact Type A [CTA], Type B [B], and forsterite‐bearing type B [FoB]) from the Northwest Africa (NWA) 5343 (CK3.7) and NWA 4964 (CK3.8) carbonaceous chondrites, compare them with the mineralogy of igneous CAIs from the Allende (CV3.6) chondrite, and discuss the nature of the alteration processes that affected the CK and CV CAIs. The primary mineralogy and mineral chemistry of the CK3 CAIs studied are similar to those from Allende; however, primary melilite and anorthite are nearly completely absent. Although the secondary minerals identified in CK CAIs (Al‐diopside, andradite, Cl‐apatite, clintonite, forsterite, ferroan olivine, Fe,Ni‐sulfides, grossular, ilmenite, magnetite, plagioclase, spinel, titanite, and wadalite) occur also in the Allende CAIs, there are several important differences: (i) In addition to melilite and anorthite, which are nearly completely replaced by secondary minerals, the alteration of CK CAIs also affected high‐Ti pyroxenes (fassaite and grossmanite) characterized by high Ti 3+ /Ti 4+ ratio and spinel. These pyroxenes are corroded and crosscut by veins of Fe‐ and Ti‐bearing grossular, Fe‐bearing Al,Ti‐diopside, titanite, and ilmenite. Spinel is corroded by Fe‐bearing Al‐diopside and grossular. (ii) The secondary mineral assemblages of grossular + monticellite and grossular + wollastonite, commonly observed in the Allende CAIs, are absent; the Fe‐bearing grossular + Fe‐bearing Al‐diopside ± Fe,Mg‐spinel, Fe‐bearing grossular + Fe,Mg‐olivine ± Fe,Mg‐spinel, and Ca,Na‐plagioclase + Fe‐bearing Al‐diopside + Fe‐bearing grossular assemblages are present instead. These mineral assemblages are often crosscut by veins of Fe‐bearing Al‐diopside, Fe,Mg‐olivine, Fe,Mg‐spinel, and Ca,Na‐plagioclase. The coarse‐grained secondary grossular and Al‐diopside often show multilayered chemical zoning with distinct compositional boundaries between the layers; the abundances of Fe and Ti typically increase toward the grain edges. (iv) Sodium‐rich secondary minerals, nepheline and sodalite, commonly observed in the peripheral portions of the Allende CAIs, are absent; Ca,Na‐plagioclase is present instead. We conclude that coarse‐grained igneous CAIs from CK3.7–3.8 s and Allende experienced an open‐system multistage metasomatic alteration in the presence of an aqueous solution–infiltration metasomatism. This process resulted in localized mobilization of all major rock‐forming elements: Si, Ca, Al, Ti, Mg, Fe, Mn, Na, K, and Cl. The metasomatic alteration of CK CAIs is more advanced and occurred under higher temperature and higher oxygen fugacity than that of the Allende CAIs.

Heating events in the nascent solar system recorded by rare earth element isotopic fractionation in refractory inclusions

Equilibrium condensation of solar gas is often invoked to explain the abundance of refractory elements in planets and meteorites. This is partly motivated, by the observation that the depletions in both the least and most refractory rare earth elements (REEs) in meteoritic group II calcium-aluminum–rich inclusions (CAIs) can be reproduced by thermodynamic models of solar nebula condensation. We measured the isotopic compositions of Ce, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Dy, Er, and Yb in eight CAIs to test this scenario. Contrary to expectation for equilibrium condensation, we find light isotope enrichment for the most refractory REEs and more subdued isotopic variations for the least refractory REEs. This suggests that group II CAIs formed by a two-stage process involving fast evaporation of preexisting materials, followed by near-equilibrium recondensation. The calculated time scales are consistent with heating in events akin to FU Orionis– or EX Lupi–type outbursts of eruptive pre–main-sequence stars.

Astronomical context of Solar System formation from molybdenum isotopes in meteorite inclusions

Calcium-aluminum–rich inclusions (CAIs) in meteorites are the first solids to have formed in the Solar System, defining the epoch of its birth on an absolute time scale. This provides a link between astronomical observations of star formation and cosmochemical studies of Solar System formation. We show that the distinct molybdenum isotopic compositions of CAIs cover almost the entire compositional range of material that formed in the protoplanetary disk. We propose that CAIs formed while the Sun was in transition from the protostellar to pre–main sequence (T Tauri) phase of star formation, placing Solar System formation within an astronomical context. Our results imply that the bulk of the material that formed the Sun and Solar System accreted within the CAI-forming epoch, which lasted less than 200,000 years.

Polarization options in inclusive DIS off tensor polarized deuteron

In the near future, the Jefferson Lab b 1 experiment will provide the second measurement of tensor polarized asymmetries in inclusive DIS on the deuteron. In this asymmetry, 4 independent tensor polarized structure functions contribute. This necessitates systematic approximations in the extraction of the leading twist structure function b 1 from a single tensor asymmetry measurement. Contamination from higher twist structure functions and kinematic effects is discussed here. Using a deuteron convolution model, we quantify the systematic errors from these approximations for two different choices for the target polarization direction (momentum transfer, electron beam direction). For Jefferson Lab 12 GeV kinematics, the systematic error turns out to be comparable between the two polarization options, while at higher Q 2 values the momentum transfer direction is preferred.

Inclusive J /$\psi$ production at midrapidity in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

We report on the inclusive J/ψ production cross section measured at the CERN Large Hadron Collider in proton–proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV. The J/ψ mesons are reconstructed in the e + e - decay channel and the measurements are performed at midrapidity (|y|<0.9) in the transverse-momentum interval 0 < p T < 40 GeV/c, using a minimum-bias data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity L int =32.2 nb -1 and an Electromagnetic Calorimeter triggered data sample with L int =8.3 pb -1 . The p T -integrated J/ψ production cross section at midrapidity, computed using the minimum-bias data sample, is dσ/dy| y = 0 = 8.97±0.24 (stat)±0.48 (syst)±0.15 (lumi) μb. An approximate logarithmic dependence with the collision energy is suggested by these results and available world data, in agreement with model predictions. The integrated and p T -differential measurements are compared with measurements in pp collisions at lower energies and with several recent phenomenological calculations based on the non-relativistic QCD and Color Evaporation models.

Inclusive quarkonium production in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 5.02 TeV

This article reports on the inclusive production cross section of several quarkonium states, J/ψ, ψ(2S), $\mathcal{Υ}$(1S), $\mathcal{Υ}$(2S), and $\mathcal{Υ}$(3S), measured with the ALICE detector at the LHC, in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$=5.02 TeV. The analysis is performed in the dimuon decay channel at forward rapidity ( 2.5 < y < 4). The integrated cross sections and transverse-momentum (p T ) and rapidity (y) differential cross sections for J/ψ, ψ(2S), $\mathcal{Υ}$(1S), and the ψ(2S) -to-J/ψ cross section ratios are presented. The integrated cross sections, assuming unpolarized quarkonia, are: σ J/ψ (p T <20 GeV/c) = 5.88 ± 0.03 ± 0.34 μb, σ ψ(2S) (p T <12 GeV/c) = 0.87 ± 0.06 ± 0.10 μb, σ Υ(1S) (p T <15 GeV/c) = 45.5 ± 3.9 ± 3.5 nb, σ Υ(2S) (p T <15 GeV/c) = 22.4 ± 3.2 ± 2.7 nb, and σ Υ(3S) (p T <15 GeV/c) = 4.9 ± 2.2 ± 1.0 nb, where the first (second) uncertainty is the statistical (systematic) one. For the first time, the cross sections of the three $\mathcal{Υ}$ states, as well as the ψ(2S) one as a function of p T and y , are measured at $\sqrt{s}$=5.02 TeV at forward rapidity. These measurements also significantly extend the J/ψ p T reach and supersede previously published results. A comparison with ALICE measurements in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$=2.76, 7, 8, and 13 TeV is presented and the energy dependence of quarkonium production cross sections is discussed. Finally, the results are compared with the predictions from several production models.

Measurement of the inclusive isolated-photon production cross section in pp collisions at $\mathbf {\sqrt{\textit{s}}=13}$ TeV

The production cross section of inclusive isolated photons has been measured by the ALICE experiment at the CERN LHC in pp collisions at centre-of-momentum energy of $\mathbf {\sqrt{\textit{s}}=13}$ TeV collected during the LHC Run 2 data-taking period. The measurement is performed by combining the measurements of the electromagnetic calorimeter EMCal and the central tracking detectors ITS and TPC, covering a pseudorapidity range of and a transverse momentum range of |η γ | < 0.67 and a transverse momentum range 7 < p$^{γ}_{T}$ < 200 GeV/c. The result extends to lower p$^{γ}_{T}$ and x$^{γ}_{T}$ = 2p$^{γ}_{T}$/$\sqrt{s}$ ranges, the lowest x$^{γ}_{T}$ of any isolated photon measurements to date, extending significantly those measured by the ATLAS and CMS experiments towards lower p$^{γ}_{T}$ at the same collision energy with a small overlap between the measurements. The measurement is compared with next-to-leading order perturbative QCD calculations and the results from the ATLAS and CMS experiments as well as with measurements at other collision energies. The measurement and theory prediction are in agreement with each other within the experimental and theoretical uncertainties.

Measurement of the inclusive isolated-photon production cross section in pp and Pb–Pb collisions at $\mathbf {\sqrt{\textit{s}_{NN }} = 5.02}$ TeV

The ALICE Collaboration at the CERN LHC has measured the inclusive production cross section of isolated photons at midrapidity as a function of the photon transverse momentum (p$^{γ}_{T}$), in Pb–Pb collisions in different centrality intervals, and in pp collisions, at centre-of-momentum energy per nucleon pair of $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV. The photon transverse momentum range is between 10–14 and 40–140 GeV/c, depending on the collision system and on the Pb–Pb centrality class. The result extends to lower p$^{γ}_{T}$ than previously published results by the ATLAS and CMS experiments at the same collision energy. The covered pseudorapidity range is |η γ | < 0.67. The isolation selection is based on a charged particle isolation momentum threshold p$^{iso, ch}_{T}$ GeV/c within a cone of radii R = 0.2 and 0.4. The nuclear modification factor is calculated and found to be consistent with unity in all centrality classes, and also consistent with the HG-PYTHIA model, which describes the event selection and geometry biases that affect the centrality determination in peripheral Pb–Pb collisions. The measurement is compared to next-to-leading order perturbative QCD calculations and to the measurements of isolated photons and Z 0 bosons from the CMS experiment, which are all found to be in agreement.
