WM2024 Symposia Student Poster - ARG-US System Remote Area Monitoring at INL Experimental Proxy Design and Early Results

The patent-pending ARG-US system uses customizable high-tech sensors and monitoring systems in conjunction with a remote network connection to provide easy and quick access to the status of nuclear and radiological facilities and storage containers. In a partnership with the Argonne National Laboratory and the Idaho National Laboratory, the research team are finding new ways to customize and test the limitations the ARG-US system. This presentation is for the student poster session.

INL Senior Project

What did my team set out to accomplish:? Can I put a custom Machine Learning Model on FPGA?? Can I analyze network traffic in real time?? Can a QSFP port be used with an FPGA?? Does a visual representation of the latent space enhance our understanding of network traffic?? What is QSFP QSFP (Quad Small Form-Factor Pluggable)? QSFP supports transfer speeds generally up to 100Gb/s? Runs 4 parallel lines running up to 28 Gb/s? Why the latent space is important to our project ?Latent space is the compressed mapping of data points in a non-linear fashion? Create an understanding of the relationship of data collected? Can represent that relationship of a single network packet in 3 points (X, Y, Z) Project Outline FPGA? Custom Xilinx Petalinux Image for the operating system? Python program to collect packets and run them through the DPU (Data Processing Unit)? The program then sends the information over a socket to a computer? Display Program? Python Program that collects the information sent from the FPGA and display it in a graph

Complete the Planned FY24 Design Parameters Development at INL to Support the Drafting of the A709 Near-Term Code Case

This report presents the thermophysical properties measurements conducted in the Fiscal Year 2024 to extend the database up to 1000?. The new values are compared against properties of high Molybdenum steels in the ASME Section II Part D tables. This report also shows the comparison between new measurements against the previously measured values in literature and provides recommended thermophysical properties for A709 code case. These values will support the thermophysical property tables in near term code case of A709.

Assessment of preliminary results of baseline high entropy alloys manufactured at INL

Materials development is needed to support the design and deployment of advanced nuclear reactors that will operate at higher temperatures and in harsher environments than the current light water reactor fleet. High entropy alloys have been identified as a class of alloy that could address the needs of advanced reactors, such as the molten salt reactors, due to their potential strength, radiation resistance, and corrosion resistance. This project summarizes the work done in fiscal year 2024 for the Additive Manufacturing of High Entropy Alloys for Nuclear Applications Project. This work has focused on examination of potential alloy compositions, down selection based on simulated results, and preliminary testing of down selected alloys.

Reactors Section Presentation - INL, HPS Society 2025

The ongoing Nuclear Renaissance includes many next generation reactor designs and testing, this means translates to increased demand for Health Physicists. These opportunities are not limited to just reactors but the entire fuel cycle from mining and extraction from existing tailings, R&D support efforts at new start-up companies, to shielding modeling and design, to Recycling and Reprocessing, and eventually Decommissioning.

Summary report on the mechanical testing performed at INL for creep rupture, fatigue, creep-fatigue, and aging of A709 base material

The report provides the status of the creep, fatigue, and creep-fatigue testing to conducted at Idaho National Laboratory to generate a data package to support Alloy 709 qualification in American Society of Mechanical Engineers, Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, Section III, Division 5. These tests were performed on three commercial heats of plate material. The first procured heat was manufactured by G.O. Carlson with heat number 58776. Second and third heats were fabricated by ATI Specialty Rolled Products, with heat numbers 529900 and 530843, respectively. A series of creep and cyclic specimens were fabricated from these three heats, and tests were performed. This report presents a master list of all completed and ongoing creep, fatigue, and creep fatigue tests. Cyclic properties of three commercial heats are compared. Thermal aging of three commercial heats for 3000 hours were completed in FY 2025. The thermal aging campaign to age plate material from three commercial heats up to 100,000 hours is ongoing.

Overview of the Magnetic Resonance Capabilities at INL

The aim of this presentation is to give a broad overview of the magnetic resonance capabilities at Idaho National Laboratory and how the technique is implemented within the different directorates at the lab. Historically, the high-field NMR instrumentation has been used by our Energy & Environment Science and Technology (EES&T) directorate primarily as a characterization tool for synthetic chemistry work, but we have been actively trying to expand the use of the instrumentation into our Nuclear Science and Technology (NS&T) and National and Homeland Security (NHS) directorates. The expanded scope of work has ranged from solid-state characterization of biomass, analysis of electrolyte materials from lithium ion batteries, quantification of extracted critical materials, and measurement of metal-ligand complexes using ligands proposed for use in the nuclear fuel cycle.

Advanced nuclear reactors often operate at elevated temperatures, novel fuel with different chemical and thermal properties that may interact differently with cladding, new coolants (e.g., molten salt, liquid metal, or sodium) that are chemically aggressive, requires cladding materials with superior oxidation, corrosion, and creep resistance. Developing fuel cladding for advanced reactors is essential, as the cladding plays a critical role in reactor safety, performance, and longevity. In this study, innovative Non-Concentrated Alloys (NCAs) were developed as novel fuel cladding materials for advanced nuclear reactors. Multiple elements were chosen for the alloys. NCAs were manufactured and tested mechanically, showing promise with the arc-melting method, and setting a clear path for the next step of NCAs' development as a fuel cladding for advanced nuclear reactors.

INL POSTER 2025- KRYSTAL FOSTER

The Advanced Test Reactor (ATR) employs the N-16 system to measure reactor power by detecting beta particles emitted from nitrogen-16 isotopes. During startup, the N-16 pumps cause rapid oscillations in the discharge piping due to pressure transients, which cease when the valve supplying N-16 flow to the reactor is opened. To address this, a soft-starter is proposed to gradually increase the motor voltage, reducing mechanical stress and preventing pressure surges. This solution enhances system stability, lowers maintenance costs, extends equipment lifespan, and is more cost-effective than Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs), making it ideal for the infrequently activated N-16 pumps.
