Role of Surface Hydroxyls and Lattice Oxygen in Governing Selectivity and Restructuring During Acetic Acid Conversion on Fe 3 O 4 (001)

Understanding the reactivity of carboxylic acids on metal oxide surfaces is critical for elucidating ketonization mechanisms relevant to biomass upgrading. Here, we investigate the adsorption and thermal decomposition of acetic acid (CH 3 COOH) on Fe 3 O 4 (001) using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), temperature-programmed reaction spectroscopy (TPRS), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). At room temperature, acetic acid adsorbs dissociatively to form ordered bidentate acetate (CH 3 COO) overlayer that lifts the (√2 × √2)R 45° surface reconstruction. TPRS reveals ketene (CH 2 CO) as the dominant product, along with CO, CO 2 , and H 2 O, the latter evolving via a Mars–van Krevelen (MvK) mechanism. Isotopic labeling shows preferential CO 2 formation from the carboxyl carbon and a more balanced CO/CO 2 ratio from the methyl carbon, suggesting distinct oxidation pathways. STM imaging reveals embedded acetate intermediates filling surface oxygen vacancies created in MvK steps. Upon product formation completion (~700 K), extensive surface etching is observed, with pits elongated along the octahedral Fe rows. Approximately 20% of the surface oxygen is removed, consistent with vacancy formation stoichiometry inferred from product distributions. These findings demonstrate that carboxylate-induced restructuring of Fe 3 O 4 (001) involves both surface healing and reduction processes, offering mechanistic insights relevant to ketonization and broader carboxylic acid chemistry on metal oxides.

Dissolved Oxygen Redox as the Source of Hydrogen Peroxide and Hydroxyl Radical in Sonicated Emulsive Water Microdroplets

Sonicated emulsive water microdroplets (SEWMs) accelerate and enable a variety of catalyst-free chemical transformations. However, significant unanswered questions remain regarding the chemical intermediates they form and their possible redox origin. In this study, we identified dissolved O 2 as the primary originator of reactive oxygen species (ROS) such as OH• and H 2 O 2. We uncovered the role of dissolved O 2 redox by using a combination of microelectrochemical methods to detect H 2 O 2 , isotopic methods to identify the source of H 2 O 2 , and a combination of electron spin resonance and the DMPO spin trap to detect radicals such as OH•. Notably, we found that H 2 O 2 production is correlated with O 2 content via a reduction pathway enabled by a sufficiently large reducing power that can additionally generate H 2 and even perform Pb electroless deposition on Au and Cu metal substrates. Building on our findings, continuous O 2 bubbling of SEWMs showed accumulation of H 2 O 2 up to ∼88 mM in the aqueous phase within 1 h of sonication, demonstrating the scale-up promise of this method. Distinct to sonochemistry of a single phase, this study advances our understanding of the confluence of redox and chemical reaction mechanisms within SEWMs as a biphasic system. This insight paves the way for improving their reaction kinetics, yield, and selectivity, positioning these attractive redox microreactors as alternatives to traditional electrolyzers.

Deficiency in PHD2-mediated hydroxylation of HIF2α underlies Pacak-Zhuang syndrome

Pacak-Zhuang syndrome is caused by mutations in the EPAS1 gene, which encodes for one of the three hypoxia-inducible factor alpha (HIFα) paralogs HIF2α and is associated with defined but varied phenotypic presentations including neuroendocrine tumors and polycythemia. However, the mechanisms underlying the complex genotype-phenotype correlations remain incompletely understood. Here, we devised a quantitative method for determining the dissociation constant (K d ) of the HIF2α peptides containing disease-associated mutations and the catalytic domain of prolyl-hydroxylase (PHD2) using microscale thermophoresis (MST) and showed that neuroendocrine-associated Class 1 HIF2α mutants have distinctly higher K d than the exclusively polycythemia-associated Class 2 HIF2α mutants. Based on the co-crystal structure of PHD2/HIF2α peptide complex at 1.8 Å resolution, we showed that the Class 1 mutated residues are localized to the critical interface between HIF2α and PHD2, adjacent to the PHD2 active catalytic site, while Class 2 mutated residues are localized to the more flexible region of HIF2α that makes less contact with PHD2. Concordantly, Class 1 mutations were found to significantly increase HIF2α-mediated transcriptional activation in cellulo compared to Class 2 counterparts. These results reveal a structural mechanism in which the strength of the interaction between HIF2α and PHD2 is at the root of the general genotype-phenotype correlations observed in Pacak-Zhuang syndrome.

Identifying hydroxylated copper dimers in SSZ-13 via UV-vis-NIR spectroscopy

Cu-Exchanged zeolites are promising materials for the selective conversion of methane to methanol. Their activity is attributed to the presence of small Cu-oxo and Cu-hydroxy clusters, but the nature of active centers in various zeolite structures is still under debate. In this contribution, we combine time dependent density functional theory with spin–orbit coupling to predict the optical spectra of various Cu monomers and dimers in SSZ-13. As a result, we furthermore compare theoretical results to experimental measurements and find that the presence of Cu-hydroxy dimers and Cu monomers could potentially explain the experimentally observed UV-vis-NIR spectra.

Highly reversible Zn metal anode enabled by sustainable hydroxyl chemistry

Rechargeable Zn metal batteries (RZMBs) may provide a more sustainable and lower-cost alternative to established battery technologies in meeting energy storage applications of the future. However, the most promising electrolytes for RZMBs are generally aqueous and require high concentrations of salt(s) to bring efficiencies toward commercially viable levels and mitigate water-originated parasitic reactions including hydrogen evolution and corrosion. Electrolytes based on nonaqueous solvents are promising for avoiding these issues, although full cell performance demonstrations with solvents other than water have been very limited. To address these challenges, we investigated MeOH as an alternative electrolyte solvent. These MeOH-based electrolytes exhibited exceptional Zn reversibility over a wide temperature range, with a Coulombic efficiency > 99.5% at 50% Zn utilization without cell short-circuit behavior for > 1,800 h. More important, this remarkable performance translates well to Zn || metal-free organic cathode full cells, supporting < 6% capacity decay after > 800 cycles at –40°C.

Biochemical and structural characterization of an aromatic ring–hydroxylating dioxygenase for terephthalic acid catabolism

Significance More than 400 million tons of plastic waste is produced each year, the overwhelming majority of which ends up in landfills. Bioconversion strategies aimed at plastics have emerged as important components of enabling a circular economy for synthetic plastics, especially those that exhibit chemically similar linkages to those found in nature, such as polyesters. The enzyme system described in this work is essential for mineralization of the xenobiotic components of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) in the biosphere. Our description of its structure and substrate preferences lays the groundwork for in vivo or ex vivo engineering of this system for PET upcycling.
