Low cost method was developed for producing high strength, high modulus, continuous ceramic oxide fibers. Process transforms inexpensive metallic salts into syrup-like liquids that can be fiberized at room temperatures. Resulting salt fibers are then converted to oxides by calcination at relatively low temperatures.
A silicone material was developed which gives suitable ablative protection in the high heat flux, high shear environments encountered in severe reentry applications, such as nose cones for ballistic vehicles and protection of leading edges or other critical areas of a vehicle. In addition, the ease of handling, low application cost, and room temperature cure make such a silicon material suitable nozzles for the large rockets necessary for vehicle launching. The development of this product is traced from the selection of suitable polymers through the choice of fillers and the finalization of filler loadings.
The necessity of obtaining soundings of temperature and water vapor content of the lower troposphere with sufficient vertical resolution to determine the exchange of heat and moisture between the surface and the atmosphere is discussed. The means for solving the problem will be emission measurements in the high frequency end of the thermal infrared. The means for solving another problem is supplementary scanning with high area resolution.
The current performance of high speed photodiode detectors for the 1 to 10 micron spectral region is discussed. The (Hg,Cd)Te photodiode configuration, detector properties, integration in laser receiver modules, and frequency response are considered for near infrared and far infrared wavelengths. The recent advances in (Hg,Cd)Te material and device development are indicated by the realization not only of exceptionally high speed detectors but of detectors that exhibit excellent detectivities. The performance improves substantially when the detector is cooled. This detector junction technology has been extended to other compositions of (Hg,Cd)Te for peak spectral responses at 5 and 10 micron.
The search for a new high-modulus, high-temperature glass fiber involved the preparation of 500 glass compositions lying in 12 glass fields. These systems consisted primarily of low atomic number oxides and rare-earth oxides. Direct optical measurements of the kinetics of crystallization of the cordierite-rare earth system, for example, showed that the addition of rare-earth oxides decreased the rate of formation of cordierite crystals. Glass samples prepared from these systems proved that the rare-earth oxides made large specific contributions to the Young's modulus of the glasses. The best glasses have moduli greater than 21 million psi, the best glass fibers have moduli greater than 18 million psi, and the best glass fiber-epoxy resin composites have tensile strengths of 298,000 psi, compressive strengths of at least 220,000 psi, flexural strengths of 290,000 psi, and short-beam shear strengths of almost 17,000 psi.
Silicon transistor rate for 200 angstroms at 400 to 600 volts combines switching speed of transistors with ruggedness, power capacity of thyristor. Transistor introduces unique combination of increased power-handling capability, unusally low saturation and switching losses, and submicrosecond switching speeds. Potential applications include high power switching regulators, linear amplifiers, chopper controls for high frequency electrical vehicle drives, VLF transmitters, RF induction heaters, kitchen cooking ranges, and electronic scalpels for medical surgery.
