Sierra/SolidMechanics 5.20 ITAR Users' Guide: Addendum for Shock Capabilities

This is an addendum to the Sierra/SolidMechanics 5.20 User’s Guide that documents additional capabilities available only in alternate versions of the Sierra/SolidMechanics (Sierra/SM) code. These alternate versions are enhanced to provide capabilities that are regulated under the U.S. Department of State’s International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) export control rules. The ITAR regulated codes are only distributed to entities that comply with the ITAR export control requirements. The ITAR enhancements to Sierra/SM include material models with an energy-dependent pressure response (appropriate for very large deformations and strain rates) and capabilities for blast modeling. This document is an addendum only; the standard Sierra/SolidMechanics 5.20 User’s Guide should be referenced for most general descriptions of code capability and use.

Non-Refrigerated Warehouse Design Guide [Slides]

Warehouses typically have a low energy use relative to their floor area. This make warehouses ideal to install solar panels and offset on-site energy use and have a surplus of energy if roof area is maximized. This surplus can be used to provide things like grid services or charge electric vehicle fleets. This document is intended to provide owners and operators of warehouse information on designing efficient/decarbonized warehouses and maximize on-site generation. The information here references outside publications to provide specific guidance, such as the ASHRAE Advanced Energy Design Guides, but tailors the information specifically to warehouses. This guide provides owners a better understanding of warehouse design as well as more specific information for themselves or outside designers to reference.

Justice Underpinning Science and Technology Research (JUST-R) Offline Tool: A Tool for Guiding Researchers in Addressing Energy Justice Considerations in Early-Stage Research

The Justice Underpinning Science and Technology Research (JUST-R) Metrics Framework is a set of metrics for assessing the energy justice implications of technologies that are currently under research and development (R&D). The JUST-R Metrics Framework guides researchers through an analysis of the many facets of their research processes, from material inputs to knowledge sources, that may contribute to energy injustice both during the research period and when the technology is scaled. This JUST-R Offline Tool consists of an Excel file and PDF guide to aid researchers, engineers, and project managers in their application of the JUST-R Metrics Framework. This tool enables researchers to 1) evaluate the baseline energy justice implications of their research; 2) develop justice-oriented changes to the research process; and 3) track the implementation of proposed changes. The metrics included in the framework are sorted into five aspects of research: Team Dynamics, Sources & Inputs, Processes & Protocols, Waste & Hazards, and Results & Dissemination. The JUST-R Tool can be found here: https://www.nrel.gov/analysis/just-r.html.

SAM User's Guide

The System Analysis Module (SAM) is a modern system analysis tool being developed at Argonne National Laboratory for advanced non-LWR safety analysis. It aims to provide fast-running, whole-plant transient analyses capability with improved-fidelity for Sodium-cooled Fast Reactors (SFR), Lead-cooled Fast Reactors (LFR), and Molten Salt Reactors (MSR) or Fluoride-cooled High-temperature Reactors (FHR). SAM takes advantage of advances in physical modeling, numerical methods, and software engineering to enhance its user experience and usability. It utilizes an object-oriented application framework (MOOSE), and its underlying meshing and finite-element library (libMesh) and linear and non-linear solvers (PETSc), to leverage the modern advanced software environments and numerical methods. This document provides a user’s guide, which will help users understand the input description and core capabilities of the SAM code. A brief overview of the code is presented, as well as how to obtain and run it. The input syntax for various parts of the code is provided. Additionally, a number of example problems, starting with simple unit component problems to problems with increasing complexity, are provided. Because the code is still under active development, this SAM User’s Guide will evolve with periodic updates.
