Voltage Service Limits Smart Contract Using Distributed Ledger Technology for Electrical Utility Grid with Customer-Owned Generator

Modern electrical grids face growing stability risks from customer-owned generators, especially at points of common couplings (PCCs). Disruptive behavior from power-electronic sources can cause protective relays to isolate problematic generators, making measurement integrity critical. This article presents a distributed ledger technology (DLT) approach that uses smart contracts to evaluate PCC voltage measurements and trigger backup breaker operations. The approach is framed as a verifiable, multi-organization attestation and audit layer, not as a real-time control security mechanism. In the proposed architecture, voltage measurements from a hardware protective relay are anchored on a DLT through the Cyber Grid Guard (CGG) system for attestation by both the grid utility and customer-owned generator. A Voltage Service Limits (VSLs) smart contract evaluates the on-chain measurements against allowable phase-voltage limits derived from the ANSI C84.1 standard. The framework is validated in a hardware-relay-in-the-loop test bed under sustained-undervoltage, sustained-overvoltage, and transient line-to-line fault scenarios. The results show that the VSL smart contract can process these measurements and issue backup breaker actions consistent with the defined service-limit criteria, demonstrating the DLT potential as a verifiable audit layer at the PCC that complements primary protection.

Auxin-Producing Bacteria from Duckweeds Have Different Colonization Patterns and Effects on Plant Morphology

The role of auxin in plant–microbe interaction has primarily been studied using indole-3-acetic acid (IAA)-producing pathogenic or plant-growth-promoting bacteria. However, the IAA biosynthesis pathway in bacteria involves indole-related compounds (IRCs) and intermediates with less known functions. Here, we seek to understand changes in plant response to multiple plant-associated bacteria taxa and strains that differ in their ability to produce IRCs. We had previously studied 47 bacterial strains isolated from several duckweed species and determined that 79% of these strains produced IRCs in culture, such as IAA, indole lactic acid (ILA), and indole. Using Arabidopsis thaliana as our model plant with excellent genetic tools, we performed binary association assays on a subset of these strains to evaluate morphological responses in the plant host and the mode of bacterial colonization. Of the 21 tested strains, only four high-quantity IAA-producing Microbacterium strains caused an auxin root phenotype. Compared to the commonly used colorimetric Salkowski assay, auxin concentration determined by LC–MS was a superior indicator of a bacteria’s ability to cause an auxin root phenotype. Studies with the auxin response mutant axr1-3 provided further genetic support for the role of auxin signaling in mediating the root morphology response to IAA-producing bacteria strains. Interestingly, our microscopy results also revealed new evidence for the role of the conserved AXR1 gene in endophytic colonization of IAA-producing Azospirillum baldaniorum Sp245 via the guard cells.

Active Reduction of Apparent Cable Capacitance

This paper presents a method for reducing apparent cable capacitance seen by sensors. The proposed method is designed for sensing in extreme environments including ultra-high temperatures, but can be applied in benign environments as well. By reducing the cable capacitance, high speed signals can be transmitted over longer distances, allowing the application of advanced control systems that require high bandwidth data for stable operation. A triaxial cable with an associated guard circuit is developed that actively reduces cable capacitance while also rejecting extraneous electric and magnetic interference on the signal. The active capacitance reduction method developed is tested experimentally and shown to reduce apparent cable capacitance to two percent of the static value.

Response of AC-coupled Low Gain Avalanche Detectors to Ionizing and Non-ionizing Radiation Damage

Low gain avalanche diodes with DC- and AC-coupled readout were exposed to ionizing and non-ionizing radiation at levels relevant to future experiments in particle, nuclear, and medical physics and to astrophysics. Damage-related change in their acceptor removal constants and in the resistivity of the region between the guard ring and the active area are reported, as is change in the leakage current and depletion voltages of the active volumes.

Scintillation detector for carbon-14

Detector consists of plastic, cylindrical double-wall scintillation cell, which is filled with gas to be analyzed. Thin, inner cell wall is isolated optically from outer (guard) scintillator wall by evaporated-aluminum coating. Bonding technique provides mechanical support to cell wall when device is exposed to high temperatures.

Computer acquired performance data from an etched-rhenium, molybdenum planar diode

Performance data from an etched-rhenium, molybdenum thermionic converter are presented. The planar converter has a guard-ringed collector and a fixed spacing of 0.254 mm (10 mils). The data were acquired by using a computer and are available on microfiche as individual or composite parametric current, voltage curves. The parameters are the temperatures of the emitter T sub E, collector T sub C and cesium reservoir T sub R. The composite plots have constant T sub E, and varying T sub C or T sub R, or both. The envelope and composite plots having constant I sub E are presented. The diode was tested at increments between 1500 and 2000 K for the emitter, 750 and 1100 K for the collector, and 540 and 640 K for the reservoir. In all, 774 individual current, voltage curves were obtained.

A preliminary study of containment concepts for aircraft landing on elevated STOL-ports

A preliminary study of containment systems for aircraft landing on elevated STOL-ports was conducted as part of an overall study of human acceptance problems associated with STOL operations. The study included a survey and feasibility study of different concepts and a computer analysis of four arrestment systems. The principal conclusion was that a system referred to as the FAA system appears to offer the greatest promise. In this system, standard arresting gear cables are stretched across the roof-top, at roughly 100-foot intervals, but are shielded over the 100-foot-wide primary landing strip. Thus a pilot can land with an arresting hook down, but will not contact the cable unless he swerves off the landing strip, either because he has made a bad landing, or because his landing gear has failed. It was also noted that a suitable curb or guard rail should be developed. Presently available arresting gears and nylon net barriers were considered satisfactory for the overshoot problem.

The diminiode: A research and development tool for nuclear thermionics

Diminiodes are fixed-or variable-gap cesium diodes with plane miniature emitters and guarded collectors. In addition to smallness, their relative advantages are simplicity, precision, ease of fabrication, interchangeability of parts, cleanliness, full instrumentation, ruggedness, and economy. With diminiodes and computers used in thermionic performance mapping, a thorough electrode screening program becomes practical.

Thermal conductivity of filled RTV compounds

Sealant materials with high thermal conductivity, and electrically nonconductive were studied for applications. Alumina and other thermally conductive fillers were examined for room temperature vulcanizing (RTV) use. The guarded hot plate apparatus, and its operation are described, and results of the thermal conductivity tests are discussed. It was found that magnesium oxide is significantly better than aluminum oxide as a filler enhancing the thermal conductivity of RTV. Recommendations for future studies are included.
