Time dependent deformation and stress in the lithosphere

Efficient computer programs incorporating frontal solution and time stepping procedure were developed for the modelling of geodynamic problems. This scheme allows for investigating the quasi static phenomena including the effects of the rheological structure of a tectonically active region. From three dimensional models of strike slip earthquakes, it was found that lateral variation of viscosity affects the characteristics of surface deformations. The vertical deformation is especially informative about the viscosity structure in a strike slip fault zone. A three dimensional viscoelastic model of a thrust earthquake indicated that the transient disturbance on plate velocity due to a great plate boundary earthquake is significant at intermediate distances, but becomes barely measurable 1000 km away from the source.

An analytic technique for statistically modeling random atomic clock errors in estimation

Minimum variance estimation requires that the statistics of random observation errors be modeled properly. If measurements are derived through the use of atomic frequency standards, then one source of error affecting the observable is random fluctuation in frequency. This is the case, for example, with range and integrated Doppler measurements from satellites of the Global Positioning and baseline determination for geodynamic applications. An analytic method is presented which approximates the statistics of this random process. The procedure starts with a model of the Allan variance for a particular oscillator and develops the statistics of range and integrated Doppler measurements. A series of five first order Markov processes is used to approximate the power spectral density obtained from the Allan variance.

Precision orbit analyses in support of the Seasat altimeter experiment

It is noted that major improvements have been made in the Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) geodynamic models for Seasat. It is pointed out that the dominant error source in Seasat ephemeris computation is currently the uncertainty in modeling the earth's gravity field. Attention is also given to significant errors arising from atmospheric drag and solar radiation pressure modeling. It is noted that a comparison of GSFC and Naval Surface Weapons Center (NSWC) Seasat ephemerides indicate the presence of an unexplained difference of about 4 m in the location of the center of mass along the Z axis. This difference is consistent with that obtained with earlier geoid and station coordinated comparisons performed by other investigators. It is expected that future combinations of Seasat and GEOS-3 altimeter data, together with laser and Unified S-Band tracking data, will ultimately produce a gravity field which allows computations of a global Seasat ephemeris with an rms radial accuracy of about 50 cm.

Mode and mechanisms of plateau uplifts

The mode and mechanisms of plateau uplifts are reported, based on discussions which occurred as part of a conference on plateau uplifts sponsored by the Inter-Union Commission on Geodynamics and the Lunar and Planetary Institute. Major plateaus and high plains of the world are discussed with emphasis on the Colorado Plateau, which possesses a shield-like crust 45 km thick and occupies most of eastern Utah and parts of Colorado, Arizona, and New Mexico. Several uplift mechanisms are described, including thermal expansion due to a deep mantle plume or hot spot, and hydration reactions such as serpentinization. It is concluded that uplifts are most commonly associated with either subduction and its direct effects, or deep-seated thermal disturbances.

Superconducting tensor gravity gradiometer

The employment of superconductivity and other material properties at cryogenic temperatures to fabricate sensitive, low-drift, gravity gradiometer is described. The device yields a reduction of noise of four orders of magnitude over room temperature gradiometers, and direct summation and subtraction of signals from accelerometers in varying orientations are possible with superconducting circuitry. Additional circuits permit determination of the linear and angular acceleration vectors independent of the measurement of the gravity gradient tensor. A dewar flask capable of maintaining helium in a liquid state for a year's duration is under development by NASA, and a superconducting tensor gravity gradiometer for the NASA Geodynamics Program is intended for a LEO polar trajectory to measure the harmonic expansion coefficients of the earth's gravity field up to order 300.

Establishment of terrestrial reference frames by new observational techniques

It is anticipated that terrestrial reference systems for geodynamics studies which include adopted plate motion models will be introduced for the analysis of both LAGEOS satellite and very long baseline interferometry ranging data. One of the possible approaches involves adjustment of ground station coordinates in conjunction with solutions for Universal Time 1 (UT1) and polar motions as functions of time. Another method uses principal value decomposition to reduce the number of degrees of freedom being solved for by three. In a third alternative, the values of UT1 and polar motion derived from the available data by means of the initial set of coordinates are kept fixed, and an appropriate block of data is reanalyzed using the previously determined values of UT1 and polar motion so that a new set of station coordinates can be derived.
