The potential efficiency of using nonlinear up-conversion techniques for the high efficiency type lasers (CO,CO2, and chemical) is assessed. Results indicate that: the small pump photon energy necessitates the use of molecular media for conversion if resonance enhancement is to be used and that molecular systems present several problems. These difficulties include: their levels are complex; their transition probabilities are often unknown; and the oscillator strengths among vibrational levels in the ground electronic state of a molecule are much smaller than those among electronic states of an atom, thus limiting the magnitude of nonlinear interactions. It is shown that this problem can be eliminated by making use of vibronic transitions which, being primarily electronic transitions have much larger matrix elements and efficient conversion can be achieved with molecular systems.
The methodology presented is a derivation of the utility owned solar electric systems model. The net present value of the system is determined by consideration of all financial benefits and costs including a specified return on investment. Life cycle costs, life cycle revenues, and residual system values are obtained. Break-even values of system parameters are estimated by setting the net present value to zero.
Noise sources of wind turbines with rotors upstream of the support structure are discussed along with methodology for sound level prediction. Estimated noise levels for the MOD-2 wind turbine are presented operating in both the upwind and downwind configurations. Results indicate that upwind rotor configurations may be advantageous from an acoustical standpoint.
This purpose of this contract study task was to investigate the State of the Art in Gas Separation Technologies utilized for separating air into both nitrogen and oxygen gases for potential applications on commercial aircraft. The intended applications included: nitrogen gas for fuel tank inerting, cargo compartment fire protection, and emergency oxygen for passenger and crew use in the event of loss of cabin pressure. The approach was to investigate three principle methods of gas separation: Hollow Fiber Membrane (HFM), Ceramic Membrane (CM), and liquefaction: Total Atmospheric Liquefaction of Oxygen and Nitrogen (TALON). Additional data on the performance of molecular sieve pressure swing adsorption (PSA) systems was also collected and discussed. Performance comparisons of these technologies are contained in the body of the report.
The discrete frequency sound produced by the flow of air at low subsonic speeds over a deep cavity was investigated. A long aspect ratio rectangular cavity with a leading edge overhang that cut off of the cavity opening was placed flush with the top surface of a wind tunnel. The approach flow velocity was maintained at 50 m/s for the benchmark problem although results are also presented for other conditions. Boundary layer measurements conducted with a single element hotwire anemometer indicated that the boundary layer thickness just upstream of the cavity was equal to 17 mm. Sound pressure level measurements were made at three locations in the cavity: the center of the leading edge wall, the center of the cavity floor, and the center of the trailing edge wall. Three discrete tones were measured at all three locations with corresponding Strouhal numbers (based on cavity opening length and approach flow velocity) equal to 0.24, 0.26, and 0.41. The amplitudes of each tone were approximately equal at each measurement location in the cavity. Measurements made at other approach flow conditions indicated that the approach flow velocity and the boundary layer thickness affected the frequency characteristics of the discrete tones.
Automated cloud detection and tracking is an important step in assessing global climate change via remote sensing. Cloud masks, which indicate whether individual pixels depict clouds, are included in many of the data products that are based on data acquired on- board earth satellites. Many cloud-mask algorithms have the form of decision trees, which employ sequential tests that scientists designed based on empirical astrophysics studies and astrophysics simulations. Limitations of existing cloud masks restrict our ability to accurately track changes in cloud patterns over time. In this study we explored the potential benefits of automatically-learned decision trees for detecting clouds from images acquired using the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) instrument on board the NOAA-14 weather satellite of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. We constructed three decision trees for a sample of 8km-daily AVHRR data from 2000 using a decision-tree learning procedure provided within MATLAB(R), and compared the accuracy of the decision trees to the accuracy of the cloud mask. We used ground observations collected by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration Clouds and the Earth s Radiant Energy Systems S COOL project as the gold standard. For the sample data, the accuracy of automatically learned decision trees was greater than the accuracy of the cloud masks included in the AVHRR data product.
In this paper we will discuss how artificial intelligent technologies are synergistically integrated in multi-layer control architecture to enable a virtual spacecraft science agent.
This paper discusses the design and implementation of the automated Cassini control function, a concept which is extensible to any subsystem required to perform systematic, well-defined, data-driven or time-driven processing.
The Heidelberg Spectralis "OCT2", which recently became commercially available, is going to be implemented at the Johnson Space Center Flight Medicine Clinic and on board the International Space Station. Due to the increased scan rate of the "OCT2", this upgrade will allow for significant reduction in valuable crew testing time and also allow for additional capabilities, like OCT Angiography and Multi-Color Fundus Imaging. Due to the custom scans used to monitor Space Flight-Associated Neuro-ocular Syndrome (SANS) in our crewmembers, an evaluation to assess the impacts of transitioning from "OCT1" to "OCT2" was performed. An engineering assessment (N=1) was performed to identify any potential impacts of maintaining an "OCT1" on board ISS while implementing an "OCT2" in the JSC Clinic. "OCT2" implementation will lag JSC FMC clinical implementation due to the flight certification/manifestation process. The clinical assessment was performed (n=12) to identify any impacts due to the replacement of the "OCT1" with the "OCT2" to the longitudinal OCT data across a crewmember's mission/lifetime. The qualitative results from the engineering and clinical evaluation will be reported, as well as the quantitative assessment of the clinical variables

Diamond diode-based devices are configured to convert radiation energy into electrical current, useable for sensing (i.e., detection) or delivery to a load (i.e., energy harvesting). A diode-based detector includes an intrinsic diamond layer arranged between p-type diamond and n-type diamond layers, with the detector further including at least one of (i) a boron containing layer arranged proximate to the n-type and/or the intrinsic diamond layers, or (ii) an intrinsic diamond layer thickness in a range of 10 nm to 300 microns. A diode-based detector may be operated in a non-forward biased state, with a circuit used to transmit a current pulse in a forward bias direction to reset a detection state of the detector. An energy harvesting device may include at least one p-i-n stack (including an intrinsic diamond layer between p-type diamond and n-type diamond layers), with a radioisotope source arranged proximate to the at least one p-i-n stack.
