Structure of the (110) Ln ScO 3 ( Ln =Gd,Tb,Dy) surfaces

The surface reconstruction on the (110) surface of LnScO 3 (Ln=Gd,Tb,Dy) has been investigated using x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, and transmission electron diffraction coupled with higher-level density-functional theory methods. The experimental techniques generate constraints on the surface chemistry and structure that are used to inform the theoretical comparison of a number of potential surface structures. The resulting structure is then compared to experimental aberration-corrected transmission electron microscopy results using multislice simulation. The surfaces of both single-crystalline substrates and hydrosauna synthesized nanoparticles exhibit a Sc-rich double layer with a Sc 3 O 4 termination.

Unconventional magnetic order emerging from competing energy scales in the new R Rh 3 Si 7 intermetallics ( R = Gd-Yb)

The competition between Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY), crystal electric field (CEF), and Kondo energy scales has recently emerged at the heart of complex magnetism in several Ce- or Yb-based intermetallics. Hard axis magnetic order has been observed in a handful of these compounds, independent of the crystal symmetry, size of the ordered moment, or the relative scale of the Kondo and magnetic ordering temperatures. This raises the question of the role of each energy scale in driving the ground state properties. In focusing on a single class of compounds, the rhombohedral RRh 3 Si 7 , we compare the anisotropy and magnetic ground states in members of this series with only RKKY interactions (R = Gd), or RKKY and CEF effects (R = Tb-Tm), with the behavior of the R = Yb compound, where all three energy scales (RKKY, CEF, Kondo) are at play. Moreover, we extend the comparison to two other isostructural Kondo systems YbIr 3 Si 7 and YbIr 3 Ge 7 , where hard axis magnetic order is also observed. The non-Kondo compounds RRh 3 Si 7 (R = Tb-Tm) lack the complexity of magnetic order along the hard CEF axis, pointing to the dominant role of the Kondo effect in driving this magnetic order. Furthermore, the CEF-RKKY competition is still responsible for complex magnetic ground states, and it appears that the electronic and magnetic degrees of freedom are entangled in all magnetic members of this series of compounds.

Synthesis and magnetic properties of the Shastry-Sutherland family R 2 Be 2 SiO 7 ( R = Nd , Sm , Gd-Yb )

Compounds forming the quasi-two-dimensional Shastry-Sutherland lattice (SSL) have attracted significant experimental and theoretical attention in the field of frustrated magnetism. This is primarily due to their realization of an exactly soluble J 1 –J 2 orthogonal dimer model capable of hosting magnetic order, dimer singlet, and plaquette singlet phases in zero applied field and their complex magnetic phase diagrams with fractional magnetization plateaus and possible superfluid and supersolid phases found between the plateau states. The discovery and characterization of SSL compounds based on rare-earth magnetic ions provide a direct route to study the stability and properties of these exotic magnetic phases in systems with a variety of different magnetic anisotropies. In this paper, we discuss the synthesis and magnetic characterization of polycrystalline samples of the R 2 ⁢Be 2 ⁢SiO 7 family, where R=Nd, Sm, and Gd-Yb. All family members crystallize in the space group $P\bar{⁢4}⁢2_1⁢m$ (113) and show no signs of long-range magnetic order above 2 K, except for R=Tb which orders antiferromagnetically at 2.6 K.

Phase segregation and miscibility of TiO x nanocomposites in Gd-doped ceria solid electrolyte material

Electro-chemo-mechanical (ECM) coupling refers to mechanical deformation due to electrochemically driven compositional change in a solid. An ECM actuator producing micrometre-size displacements and long-term stability at room temperature was recently reported, comprising a 20 mol% Gd-doped ceria (20GDC), a solid electrolyte membrane, placed between two working bodies made of TiO x /20GDC (Ti-GDC) nanocomposites with Ti concentration of 38 mol%. The volumetric changes originating from oxidation or reduction in the local TiO x units are hypothesized to be the origin of mechanical deformation in the ECM actuator. Studying the Ti concentration-dependent structural changes in the Ti-GDC nanocomposites is therefore required for (i) understanding the mechanism of dimensional changes in the ECM actuator and (ii) maximizing the ECM response. Here, the systematic investigation of the local structure of the Ti and Ce ions in Ti-GDC over a broad range of Ti concentrations using synchrotron X-ray absorption spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction is reported. The main finding is that, depending on the Ti concentration, Ti atoms either form a cerium titanate or segregate into a TiO 2 anatase-like phase. The transition region between these two regimes with Ti(IV) concentration between 19% and 57% contained strongly disordered TiO x units dispersed in 20GDC containing Ce(III) and Ce(IV) and hence rich with oxygen vacancies. As a result, this transition region is proposed to be the most advantageous for developing ECM-active materials.

Role of Pr-Vacancies and O-Interstitials on the Activity and Stability of (Pr 1−x Ln x ) 2 NiO 4 (Ln = La, Nd, Pm, Sm, Gd, Tb, Dy, and Ho) towards Oxygen Reduction Reactions: A DFT Study

Praseodymium nickelate, Pr 2 NiO 4 (PNO), is a promising electrode to promote oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in a solid oxide fuel cell, but it exhibits phase transformation during electrochemical operation. The origin of the simultaneous phase transformation and high electrochemical performance remains obscure. We carried out a systematic density functional theory study to elucidate the mechanism for this conjugated phenomenon. Charge, electronic structure, and normal-mode analysis suggest the presence of peroxide. Our study shows that the formation of peroxide (O 2 2– ) is attributed to both oxygen interstitials and Pr vacancies. The peroxide species limits the oxygen ion migration due to the additional energy required to break its O–O bond, which leads to a decrease in ORR activity. Subsequently, we investigate the diffusion paths of Pr-ions while comparing them with those of other Ln 3+ ions (La, Nd, Pm, Sm, Gd, Tb, Dy, and Ho) in PNO. The formation energies for various Ln 3+ cation occupancies are calculated, as well as segregation energies in CeO 2 (111) surfaces. Lastly, criteria for effective Ln 3+ dopants are developed. La, Nd, and Pm are proposed as potential substituents in PNO to obtain a stable structure.

Measuring the β-decay Properties of Neutron-rich Exotic Pm, Sm, Eu, and Gd Isotopes to Constrain the Nucleosynthesis Yields in the Rare-earth Region

Abstract The β -delayed neutron-emission probabilities of 28 exotic neutron-rich isotopes of Pm, Sm, Eu, and Gd were measured for the first time at RIKEN Nishina Center using the Advanced Implantation Detector Array (AIDA) and the BRIKEN neutron detector array. The existing β -decay half-life ( T 1/2 ) database was significantly increased toward more neutron-rich isotopes, and uncertainties for previously measured values were decreased. The new data not only constrain the theoretical predictions of half-lives and β -delayed neutron-emission probabilities, but also allow for probing the mechanisms of formation of the high-mass wing of the rare-earth peak located at A ≈ 160 in the r -process abundance distribution through astrophysical reaction network calculations. An uncertainty quantification of the calculated abundance patterns with the new data shows a reduction of the uncertainty in the rare-earth peak region. The newly introduced variance-based sensitivity analysis method offers valuable insight into the influence of important nuclear physics inputs on the calculated abundance patterns. The analysis has identified the half-lives of 168 Sm and of several gadolinium isotopes as some of the key variables among the current experimental data to understand the remaining abundance uncertainty at A = 167–172.

Space shuttle: Static stability and control investigation of the NR-GD/C delta wing booster (B-15B-1) and a Reusable Nuclear Stage (RNS) M = 0.6 - 4.96

Experimental aerodynamic investigations were made in the NASA/MSFC 14 x 14 inch trisonic wind tunnel on a NR-GD/C 0.0031 scale model delta wing booster (B-15B-1) and reusable nuclear stage (RNS). Three basic configurations were tested: (1) the B-15B-1 booster alone, (2) the RNS alone, and (3) the booster with the RNS mounted piggyback. Six component force and moment data were recorded for each of these configurations over an angle of attack range from -16 deg to 4 deg at zero degrees sideslip, and over an angle of sideslip range from -10 deg to 10 deg at zero and -6 degrees angle of attack. The configurations were tested over a Mach number range of 0.6 to 5.0 with a nominal Reynolds number of 6.5 million per foot except for Mach 1.2 and 3.0 where the Reynolds number were 12.4 million and 4.4 million per foot respectively.

Superconductivity above 90 K in the square-planar compound system ABa2Cu3O(6 + x) with A = Y, La, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Ho, Er, and Lu

Superconductivity has been found in the 90-K range in ABa2Cu3O(6 + x) with A = La, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Ho, Er, and Lu in addition to Y. The results suggest that the unique square-planar Cu atoms, each surrounded by four or six oxygen atoms, are crucial to the superconductivity of oxides in general. In particular, the high Tc of ABa2Cu3O(6 + x) is attributed mainly to the quasi-two-dimensional assembly of the CuO2-Ba-CuO(2 + x)Ba-CuO2 layers sandwiched between two A layers, with particular emphasis in the CuO(2 + x) layers. Higher-Tc oxides are predicted for compounds with bigger assemblies of CuO2 layers coupled by Ba layers.

A design of experiments test to define critical spray cleaning parameters for Brulin 815 GD and Jettacin cleaners

Experimental design testing was conducted to identify critical parameters of an aqueous spray process intended for cleaning solid rocket motor metal components (steel and aluminum). A two-level, six-parameter, fractional factorial matrix was constructed and conducted for two cleaners, Brulin 815 GD and Diversey Jettacin. The matrix parameters included cleaner temperature and concentration, wash density, wash pressure, rinse pressure, and dishwasher type. Other spray parameters: nozzle stand-off, rinse water temperature, wash and rinse time, dry conditions, and type of rinse water (deionized) were held constant. Matrix response testing utilized discriminating bond specimens (fracture energy and tensile adhesion strength) which represent critical production bond lines. Overall, Jettacin spray cleaning was insensitive to the range of conditions tested for all parameters and exhibited bond strengths significantly above the TCA test baseline for all bond lines tested. Brulin 815 was sensitive to cleaning temperature, but produced bond strengths above the TCA test baseline even at the lower temperatures. Ultimately, the experimental design database was utilized to recommend process parameter settings for future aqueous spray cleaning characterization work.

Whole earth telescope observations of the DBV white dwarf GD 358

We report on the analysis of 154 hours of early continuous high-speed photometry on the pulsating DB white dwarf (DBV) GD 358, obtained during the Whole Earth Telescope (WET) run of 1990 May. The power spectrum of the light curve is dominated by power in the range from 1000 to 2400 microHz with more than 180 significant peaks in the total spectrum. We identify all of the triplet frequencies as degree l = 1, and from the details of their spacings we derive the total stellar mass as 0.61 + or - 0.03 solar mass, the mass of the outer helium envelope as 2.0 + or - 1.0 x 10(exp -6) M(sub *), the absolute luminosity as 0.050 + or - 0.012 solar luminosity and the distance as 42 + or - 3 pc. We find strong evidence for differential rotation in the radial direction -- the outer envelope is rotating at least 1.8 times faster than the core -- and we detect the presence of a weak magnetic field with a strength of 1300 + or - 300 G. We also find a significant power at the sums and differences of the dominant frequencies, indicating nonlinear processes are significant, but they have a richness and complexity that rules out resonant mode coupling as a major cause.

Low density of neutral hydrogen and helium in the local interstellar medium: Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer photometry of the Lyman continuum of the hot white dwarfs MCT 0501-2858, MCT 0455-2812, HZ 43, and GD 153

The first comprehensive sky survey of the extreme ultraviolet (EUV) spectral range performed by the Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer (EUVE) has uncovered a handful of very bright sources at wavelengths longer than the He I 504 A photoionization edge. Among these objects are four white dwarfs with exceptionally low interstellar medium (ISM) column densities along the line of sight. Analysis of EUV photometry of the He-rich DO white dwarf MCT 0501-2858 and the H-rich DA white dwarf MCT 0455-2812 along one line of sight and of the DA white dwarfs HZ 43 and GD 153 near the north Galactic pole indicates that the overall minimum column density of the neutral material centered on the Sun is N(H I) = 0.5-1.0 x 10(exp 18)/sq cm. In the case of MCT 0501-2858, EUV photometric measurements provide a clear constraint to the effective temperature (60,000-70,000 K). Given these neutral hydrogen columns, the actual contribution to the density of neutral species from the immediate solar environment (the 'local fluff') would only cover a distance of approximately equals 2-3 pc (assuming an average density n(H I) = 0.1/cu cm) leaving these lines of sight almost entirely within the hot phase of the ISM. A preliminary examination of the complete EUVE long-wavelength survey indicates that these lines of sight are exceptional and set a minimum column density in the solar environment.

Thermal Stability of M x O y Doped Zirconia Aerogels (M = Y, Yb, Gd, Ce, Ca) Studied Through 1200°C

The high porosities and low densities of ceramic aerogels offer outstanding insulative performance in applications where weight is a critical factor. The high surface area-to-volume ratios and specific surface areas provide extremely low thermal conductivity, but also contribute to rapid densification of the pore structure at elevated temperatures. This densification diminishes their favorable properties and inhibits use of aerogels in high temperature applications. This work contributes to a design framework for thermally stable aerogels via the study of dopant chemistry (Y, Yb, Gd, Ca, Ce) in zirconia aerogels. The structural evolution was studied to 1200°C using nitrogen physisorption, scanning electron microscopy, and x-ray diffraction. The role of dopant identity and concentration in thermal stability was elucidated. In context of the design framework, dopant chemistry is an aggregate for many closely related material properties, each of which may contribute to aerogel structural evolution. To develop a truly predictive design framework for ceramic-based aerogels, systematic and comprehensive evaluation of thermodynamic and kinetic properties must be performed in conjunction with studies on structural evolution.

Compositional screening of Ce-doped (Gd,Lu,Y) 3 (Al,Ga) 5 O 12 ceramics prepared by quenching from melt and their luminescence properties

Quenching from the melt using an Optical Floating Zone furnace was investigated as a possible high-throughput preparation method in order to screen novel scintillating materials. To validate this method, polycrystalline rare-earth aluminum garnets and yttrium gallium aluminum garnets were synthesized and characterized by X-ray diffraction, photoluminescence and radioluminescence emission spectra as well as radioluminescence imaging and compared to the previously reported properties of those materials. In order to achieve rapid, but quantitative comparison of the materials, pellets fabricated from the synthesized powders were sintered; two different sintering conditions were investigated and compared. Therefore, a simplistic energy deposition and light absorption model for brightness of opaque samples under X-ray irradiation was developed to estimate the relative scintillation efficiency of the materials. Based on the results, Y 3 Al 5 O 12 , LuY 2 Al 5 O 12 and GdY 2 Al 5 O 12 seem to have the highest scintillation efficiency among the prepared samples.

Functional properties of Yttrium Iron Garnett thin films on graphene-coated Gd 3 Ga 5 O 12 for remote epitaxial transfer

Remote epitaxial growth via a graphene interlayer and subsequent mechanical exfoliation of a free-standing membrane is a recently developed technique used to transfer complex oxide thin films onto non-native substrates to form heterogeneously integrated structures for various device applications. One such oxide is Yttrium Iron Garnet (YIG), a material of choice for a wide range of magnetoelectric and spintronic devices owing to its strong magnetic properties and low microwave losses. YIG is predominantly grown on lattice matched Gadolinium Gallium Garnet (GGG) substrates, but by utilizing the remote epitaxy technique, high quality YIG films can be transferred from GGG onto another substrate such as piezoelectric Lithium Niobate (LN). Mechanical strain coupling between the layers and magnetostrictive nature of YIG would allow for the investigation of the interplay in YIG/LN structures leading to the design of novel frequency agile magneto-acoustic devices. In this study functional properties of a YIG film grown using PLD on graphene-coated GGG substrate were investigated and compared to traditional YIG on GGG. Both materials were characterized in terms of crystal structure, surface morphology, FMR and Gilbert damping, and Raman and XAS spectroscopy. Further, it was found that YIG on graphene-coated GGG exhibits significantly higher microwave losses than standard YIG on GGG (FMR linewidth 30.9 vs 2.1 Oe at 10 GHz, and Gilbert damping coefficient 15.4x10 -4 vs 3.4x10 -4 respectively), which was attributed to increased concentration of Fe 2+ cations in YIG/Graphene/GGG. While the damping is higher in these studied films compared to YIG grown directly on GGG, the resulting properties are still very favorable compared to many other competing materials which can be grown without the need for lattice matched substrates, such as metallic ferromagnets.
