Fuse-holder concept expedites electronic component changes

Mounting circuit components in fuse holders facilitates component changing and extends component life with an estimated fifty percent saving of breadboard test time. Glass sleeves of the fuse holders allow easy component identification.

The diluter-demand oxygen system used during the international Himalayan expedition to Mount Everest.

The diluter-demand regulators are designed in such a way that as the individual inspires he simultaneously draws ambient air and pure oxygen from a tank into his mask. The size of the ambient air orifice is made directly proportional to the barometric pressure by use of a passive aneroid valve. As altitude increases the ambient air orifice is automatically made smaller and the individual inspires a greater proportion of oxygen.

Apollo Expeditions to the Moon

The Apollo program is described from the planning stages through Apollo 17. The organization of the program is discussed along with the development of the spacecraft and related technology. The objectives and accomplishments of each mission are emphasized along with personal accounts of the major figures involved. Other topics discussed include: ground support systems and astronaut selection.

Prochloron expedition

The purpose was to prepare Prochloron phototsynthetic membranes for the isolation of the two major chlorophyll-proteins, the p700-chlorophyll a protein and the light harvesting chlorophyll a/b-protein, using SDS-polyacrylamide get electrophoreses. The prepared proteins (purified) were examined for their cross-reactivity to polyclonal antibodies prepared from higher plant proteins. In addition, material was prepared for electron microscopy, and isolation of the DNA for determination of its general complexity (COT analysis) and similarity to barley chloroplast DNA and Anabaena DNA by using restriction-endonuclease analysis Kleinschmidt spreads of the DNA were in the electron microscope to identify and measure the extent and size of the circular DNA.

Prochloron expedition

Prochloron requires a source of N. It can obtain this from its didemnid symbiont as NH (sub4) or amino acids or both. It may obtain it from sea water as do free-living algae (FAA), but this is not likely to be the major source due to diomass consideration.

Measurement of polar stratospheric NO2 from the 23rd and 24th Japanese Antarctic Research Expedition (JARE) balloon experiments

As a part of the Japanese activities of MAP in the Antarctica, balloon-borne measurements of the stratospheric NO2 profile were planned and carried out by the JARE 23rd and 24th wintering parties. Few results have been reported so far as the stratospheric NO2 profile at high latitude. There were no reported balloon measurements carried out in the Southern Hemisphere. Profiles are presented for the first balloon-borne measurement of the stratospheric NO2 in the Antarctica. Three balloons named JA21, JA25 and JA26 were launched from Syowa Station (69 deg S, 35.6 deg E) using 5000 cu. cm plastic balloons. JA21 balloon was launched on November 24, 1982, and JA25 and JA26 balloons on November 12 and 20, 1983, respectively.

Diagnostic studies of the HxOy-NzOy-O3 photochemical system using data from NASA GTE field expeditions

Spring 1084 GTE CITE-1 flight data from the field exercise was obtained from a GTE Data Archive Tape. Chemical and supporting meteorological data taken over the Pacific Ocean was statistically and diagnostically analyzed to identify the key processes affecting the concentrations of ozone and its chemical precursors in the region. The analysis was completed. The analysis of the GTE CITE-2 data is being performed in collaboration with Dr. D.D. Davis and other GTE scientists. Initial results of the analysis were presented and work begun on the paper describing the results.

The 1989 Airborne Arctic Stratospheric Expedition Nimbus-7 TOMS data atlas

Over the past several years, world scientific attention was focused on the rapid and unanticipated decrease in the abundance of ozone over Antarctica during the Austral spring. A major aircraft campaign was conducted from December 1988 to February 1989 in response to the recently published Ozone Trends Panel Report which found that the largest decreases in Arctic ozone occurred during January to February at latitudes near the edge of the Arctic vortex. This atlas provides a complete set of TOMS ozone measurements over Europe and the North Atlantic for the duration of the experiment. These were the orbital TOMS measurements provided to the experimenters in near-real-time. In addition, a set of Northern Hemisphere TOMS ozone measurements for the period December 26, 1988 to March 20, 1989 is presented. A comparison of January and February 1989 mean ozone values to prior years is also presented.
