Study of noise reduction characteristics of composite fiber-reinforced panels, interior panel configurations, and the application of the tuned damper concept

The application of fiber reinforced composite materials, such as graphite epoxy and Kevlar, for secondary or primary structures developing in the commercial airplane industry was investigated. A composite panel program was initiated to study the effects of some of the parameters that affect noise reduction of these panels. The fiber materials and the ply orientation were chosen to be variables in the test program. It was found that increasing the damping characteristics of a structural panel will reduce the vibration amplitudes at resonant frequencies with attendant reductions in sound reduction. Test results for a dynamic absorber, a tuned damper, are presented and evaluated.

Control of antenna-feed attitude and reflector vibrations in large spaceborne antennas by mechanical decoupling and movable dampers

Simple, practical methods for damping reflector vibrations and designing antenna-feed attitude control systems in large deployable spaceborne antennas are proposed. The former involves a movable damper which is positioned so that the rate-of-change of total vibrational energy is minimized. The latter introduces a mechanical decoupler between the flexible boom and the antenna-feed, whereby the feed-attitude control system can be designed independent of boom dynamics. The validity of these approaches are substantiated by analytical studies, computer simulation, and experimental studies.

Effects of friction dampers on aerodynamically unstable rotor stages

Attention is given to the physical concepts and mathematical techniques useful in the analysis of the stabilizing effect of friction on aerodynamically unstable rotor stages. Results are presented for three-, four-, and five-bladed disks. In the present multidegree-of-freedom model of an aerodynamically unstable rotor stage, a harmonic steady state solution due to the friction dampers may be either a stability limit, a stable cycle limit, or neither. A criterion is established in the form of an energy function which determines whether the solution is a stability limit. In the event that the initial displacement and velocity exeed those associated with the steady state solution corresponding to a stability limit, the reponse becomes unbounded.

Control of reflector vibrations in large spaceborne antennas by means of movable dampers

A simple approach to the design of feedback controls for damping the vibrations in large spaceborne antennas with flexible dish reflectors is proposed. The feedback controls consist of movable velocity-feedback dampers whose positions are determined by minimizing the rate of change of total vibrational energy at any time. The performance of the proposed feedback controls is studied via computer simulations.

Improved Coulomb-Friction Damper

Equal damping provided on forward and reverse strokes. Improved damper has springs and wedge rings symmetrically placed on both ends of piston wedge, so friction force same in both directions of travel. Unlike conventional automotive shock absorbers, they resemble on outside, both versions require no viscous liquid and operate over wide temperature range.

Stability of a dual-spin spacecraft with spherical dampers

The present investigation is concerned with the stability characteristics of a specific dual-spin satellite configuration marked by a high degree of symmetry. The configuration includes a platform and a rotor. Both components contain arbitrarily located internal spherical dampers. The symmetry of the system configuration makes it possible to illustrate clearly the relationship between Routhian analysis, energy sink analysis, and digital simulation of the full nonlinear equations. Although the dual-spin spacecraft configuration contains energy dissipating devices on both platform and rotor, it is still possible to employ the rigorous, but relatively simple, Routh stability method. This method, unlike Floquet theory, has the potential of producing closed-form stability criteria. The energy sink method is capable of providing a closed-form stability criterion. Numerical simulation is a necessary requirement in the latter stages of design when the realistic perturbation environment must be considered.

Variable force, eddy-current or magnetic damper

An object of the invention is to provide variable damping for resonant vibrations which may occur at different rotational speeds in the range of rpms in which a rotating machine is operated. A variable force damper in accordance with the invention includes a rotating mass carried on a shaft which is supported by a bearing in a resilient cage. The cage is attached to a support plate whose rim extends into an annular groove in a housing. Variable damping is effected by tabs of electrically conducting nonmagnetic material which extend radially from the cage. The tabs at an index position lie between the pole face of respective C shaped magnets. The magnets are attached by cantilever spring members to the housing.

Lateral dampers for thrust bearings

The development of lateral damping schemes for thrust bearings was examined, ranking their applicability to various engine classes, selecting the best concept for each engine class and performing an in-depth evaluation. Five major engine classes were considered: large transport, military, small general aviation, turboshaft, and non-manrated. Damper concepts developed for evaluation were: curved beam, constrained and unconstrained elastomer, hybrid boost bearing, hydraulic thrust piston, conical squeeze film, and rolling element thrust face.

Influence of friction dampers on torsional blade flutter

This paper deals with the stabilizing effects of dry friction on torsional blade flutter. A lumped parameter model with single degree of freedom per blade has been used to represent the rotor stage. The well-known cascade theories for incompressible and supersonic flows have been used to determine the allowable increase in fluid velocity relative to the blade. It has been found that the effectiveness of friction dampers in controlling flutter can be substantial.

High-Temperature Vibration Damper

Device for damping vibrations functions at temperatures up to 400 degrees F. Dampens vibrational torque loads as high as 1,000 lb-in. but compact enough to be part of helicopter rotor hub. Rotary damper absorbs energy from vibrating rod, dissipating it in turbulent motion of viscous hydraulic fluid forced by moving vanes through small orifices.

A novel form of damper for turbo-machinery

Anti-swirl vanes are used by some manufacturers to delay the full development of half speed circulation in annular clearance spaces. The objective is to reduce the aerodynamic cross-coupling in the forward direction. The novel feature of a jet damper is a number of tangential nozzles discharging against the rotor surface speed. Some preliminary results on a 33.9 Kg rotor demonstrate that significant reductions in amplitude are obtained at the synchronous critical speeds.

Experimental measurement of the dynamic pressure distribution in a squeeze film bearing damper executing circular centered orbits

A review of previous experimental measurements of squeeze film damper (SFD) forces is given. Measurements by the authors of SFD pressure fields and force coefficients, for circular centered orbits with epsilon = 0.5, are described and compared with computer predictions. For Reynolds numbers over the range 2-6, the effect of fluid inertia on the pressure fields and forces is found to be significant.

Survey of impact damper performance

An overall picture of the impact damper is obtained by using time-history solutions of the system motion for the oscillator in free decay. The impactor behavior depends very strongly on oscillator amplitude, and free decay can sample the full range of behavior from an infinite number of impacts per cycle at high amplitude to no impacts at low amplitude. The overall picture cannot be obtained by analysis of steady-state forced response. Yet, the predictions are relevant to forced response behavior when the damping is relatively light. Three major regimes of impact behavior are shown to exist: low, middle and high amplitude ranges.

Numerical analysis of discrete fractional integrodifferential structural dampers

This paper develops solution algorithms enabling the handling of the dynamic response of nonlinear structures contained discretely attached dampers modeled by fractional integrodifferential operators of the Grunwald-Liouville-Riemann type. The development consists of two levels of formulation, namely: (1) numerical approximations of fractional operators and, (2) the establishment of global level implicit schemes enabling the solution to nonlinear structural formulations. To generalize the overall results, error estimates are derived for the fractional operator approximation algorithm. These enable an ongoing optimization of solution efficiency for a given error tolerance. To benchmark the scheme, the results of several numerical experiments are presented. These illustrate the numerical characteristics of the overall formulation.

Design of a recovery scheme for the Galileo spacecraft in the event of nutation damper failure

This paper discusses the design and testing of remedial measures that can be taken to achieve reasonable nutation damping of the Galileo spacecraft in the event of failure of its boom damper in flight. One scheme exploits the effects of payload motion on the nutational stability of a spinning spacecraft. This scheme demands that the spacecraft motion compensation algorithm be enabled with the scan platform bore sight pointed in a well chosen direction to produce rapid damping of spacecraft nutation. A second method suggested for nutation damping is a thruster-based open loop control algorithm, utilizing a pair of thrusters as actuators.

The Stability of the Steady State and Bistable Response of a Flexible Rotor Supported on Squeeze Film Dampers

The stability of the steady state response, the bistable response, and the jumping characteristics are analyzed for the case when a system accelerates or decelerates through the bistable region of a flexible rotor-centralized squeeze film damper system. It was found that the system steady state responses have two unstable regions. The larger the unbalance parameter and the smaller the bearing parameter and the external damping ratio, the easier it is for the system to lose stability. The larger the mass ratio and the smaller the stiffness ratio, the lower the threshold rotating speed of instability. The instability of the system steady-state response determined here is due to the system nonsynchronous response in many cases.

Measurements of Pressure Distributions and Force Coefficients in a Squeeze Film Damper. Part 1: Fully Open Ended Configuration

Measurements of pressure distributions and force coefficients were carried out in two types of squeeze film dampers, executing a circular centered orbit, an open-ended configuration, and a partially sealed one, in order to investigate the effect of fluid inertia and cavitation on pressure distributions and force coefficients. Dynamic pressure measurements were carried out for two orbit radii, epsilon 0.5 and 0.8. It was found that the partially sealed configuration was less influenced by fluid inertia than the open ended configuration.
