Coupled Neutronic and Thermal Hydraulic Analysis of a Natural Circulation Based Small Modular Reactor (SMR) Using VERA-CS

As part of the work supported by a US Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Nuclear Energy Gateway for Accelerated Innovation in Nuclear FY 2020 Voucher, Holtec International subsidiary SMR LLC (hereinafter referred to as Holtec) and Oak Ridge National Laboratory entered into a cooperative research and development agreement (CRADA) to develop coupled multiphysics core models of the Holtec developed small modular reactor (SMR), SMR-160. The scope of the 1 year project was to use the DOE–developed tool set, VERA, to analyze several aspects of a representative SMR-160 core design. The goals of the project were to perform the code-to-code benchmarking and to provide Holtec with a confirmatory calculations to compare against the results with the codes used in the SMR-160 design, identify and resolve areas of discrepancy between the two models to give Holtec a basis for selecting certain tool and model options, and develop a workflow so that the VERA model could be adapted easily to any future changes in the design of the SMR-160 core. The work proceeded in four phases: 1. Developing the initial VERA model based on Holtec-provided core design information; 2. Comparing VERA results with Holtec-provided calculations for the first five cycles; 3. Developing a VERA transient model based on the prior model; and 4. Training Holtec personnel on VERA and hand-off the developed models. This report summarizes at a high level the completed tasks. Details of the tasks and results are reserved for the full report, which will not be publicly released for 5 years per the terms of the CRADA. The report is titled “Coupled Neutronic and Thermal Hydraulic Analysis of a Natural Circulation Based Small Modular Reactor (SMR) using VERA-CS” and has the ORNL technical report number ORNL/TM 2021/2303 (NFE-20-08305)

Roles of Metal Promoters (Co, Cu, K, Ni, Zn, and Cs) in Microwave-Assisted Methane Dehydroaromatization to Aromatics Over Mo-Supported HZSM-5

Microwave (MW)-assisted methane dehydroaromatization (MDHA) offers methane conversion to more value-added aromatics, thus generating revenue and mitigating the flaring emission. We previously found that Mo/HZSM-5, despite offering higher aromatic yield, experienced rapid deactivation under microwave irradiation. Adding metal promoters is one of the solutions to not only modulate the reaction/deactivation pathways, but potentially modify the heating properties of modified Mo/HZSM-5 under MW-assisted MDHA. In this study, Mo/HZSM-5 was modified with various metal promoters (Co, Cu, K, Ni, Zn, and Cs) and their catalytic performance was assessed and correlated with their physical and chemical properties upon adding metal promoters.

Synthesis and Crystal Structures of Alkali (Na, Rb, Cs) Iron Phosphate Crystals

Three alkali-containing diphosphate crystals of A FeP 2 O 7 (A = Na, Rb, Cs) were synthesized through melt-crystallization. The crystal structures were determined using single-crystal X-ray diffraction (XRD) data. The synthesized diphosphates crystallized within the P 2 1 /c space group, and the structural parameters were compared to literature data of other A FeP 2 O 7 crystals within the P 2 1 /c space group.

CS-Studio Alarm System Based on Kafka

The CS-Studio alarm system was originally based on a relational database and the Apache ActiveMQ message service. The former was necessary to store configuration and state, while the latter communicated state updates and user actions. In a recent update, the combination of relational database and ActiveMQ have been replaced by Apache Kafka. We present how this simplified the implementation while at the same time improving performance.

Materials Data on CS by Materials Project

SC1 is lead oxide structured and crystallizes in the tetragonal P4/nmm space group. The structure is two-dimensional and consists of one SC1 sheet oriented in the (0, 0, 1) direction. C2+ is bonded to four equivalent S2- atoms to form a mixture of distorted edge and corner-sharing CS4 trigonal pyramids. All C–S bond lengths are 1.90 Å. S2- is bonded in a distorted see-saw-like geometry to four equivalent C2+ atoms.

Tailoring Molecular Space to Navigate Phase Complexity in Cs-Based Quasi-2D Perovskites via Gated-Gaussian-Driven High-Throughput Discovery

Cesium-based quasi-2D halide perovskites (HPs) offer promising functionalities and low-temperature manufacturability, suited to stable tandem photovoltaics. However, the chemical interplays between the molecular spacers and the inorganic building blocks during crystallization cause substantial phase complexities in the resulting matrices. To successfully optimize and implement the quasi-2D HP functionalities, a systematic understanding of spacer chemistry, along with the seamless navigation of the inherently discrete molecular space, is necessary. Herein, by utilizing high-throughput automated experimentation, the phase complexities in the molecular space of quasi-2D HPs are explored, thus identifying the chemical roles of the spacer cations on the synthesis and functionalities of the complex materials. Furthermore, a novel active machine learning algorithm leveraging a two-stage decision-making process, called gated Gaussian process Bayesian optimization is introduced, to navigate the discrete ternary chemical space defined with two distinctive spacer molecules. Through simultaneous optimization of photoluminescence intensity and stability that “tailors” the chemistry in the molecular space, a ternary-compositional quasi-2D HP film realizing excellent optoelectronic functionalities is demonstrated. Finally, this work not only provides a pathway for the rational and bespoke design of complex HP materials but also sets the stage for accelerated materials discovery in other multifunctional systems.
