Portable tool cleans pipes and tubing

Portable tool cleans and polishes the external surfaces of tubes and pipes without contaminating the interior areas with loose particles. The tool is driven by an electric drill and is connected to a vacuum source that removes debris resulting from the cleaning and polishing action.

Liquid oxygen dicting cleaned by falling film method

Principle of a vertical falling film is used to clean contaminated large diameter and length liquid oxygen /LOX/ cylindrical ducting. The cleaning cycle is performed by flowing trichloroethylene in a falling film down a vertically mounted duct for approximately one hour.

Improved retort for cleaning metal powders with hydrogen

Improved cleaning retort produces uniform temperature distribution in the heated zone and minimizes hydrogen channeling through the powder bed. Retort can be used for nonmetallic powders, sintering in a reducing atmosphere, and for cleaning powders in reduction atmospheres other than hydrogen.

Collodion technique of mirror cleaning

Cleaning method is modified by addition of a layer of cheesecloth between thin coatings of U.S.P. collodion. After drying, the collodion is peeled off by an even pull on the cheesecloth, leaving the mirror clean and ready for use.

Disc pack cleaning table saves computer time

Disc pack holding table is support frame upon which computer disc pack is loaded and protective cover released. This combination permits manual off-line cleaning of disc pack storage units at any time without shutting down the computer, and eliminates on-line disc drive unit to hold pack during cleaning.

Evaluation of plasma cleaning and electron spectroscopy for reduction of organic contamination

The use of Auger spectroscopy to evaluate the effectiveness of plasma cleaning procedures in decontaminating Viking spacecraft is examined. Also investigated was the use of Auger spectroscopy to monitor organic contamination. Results show plasma cleaning can be used effectively to remove organic films and that Auger spectroscopy can be used to monitor organic contamination.

Adhesion of metals to a clean iron surface studied with LEED and Auger emission spectroscopy.

Discussion of the results of adhesion experiments conducted with various metals contacting a clean iron surface. The metals included gold, silver, nickel, platinum, lead, tantalum, aluminum, and cobalt. Some of the metals were examined with oxygen present on their surface as well as in the clean state. The results indicate that, with the various metals contacting iron, the cohesively weaker will adhere and transfer to the cohesively stronger. The chemical activity of the metal also influenced the adhesive forces measured. With oxygen present on the metal surface, the adhesive forces measured could be correlated with the binding energy of the metal to oxygen.

ASRDI Oxygen Technology Survey. Volume 2: Cleaning Requirements, Procedures, and Verification Techniques

The oxygen system cleaning specifications drawn from 23 industrial and government sources are presented along with cleaning processes employed for meeting these specifications, and recommended postcleaning inspection procedures for establishing the cleanliness achieved. Areas of agreement and difference in the specifications, procedures, and inspection are examined. Also, the lack of clarity or specificity will be discussed. This absence of clarity represents potential safety hazards due to misinterpretation. It can result in exorbitant expenditures of time and money in satisfying unnecessary requirements.

Electrical contacts to ion cleaned n-type gallium arsenide.

The electrical current through silver contacts evaporated onto n-type gallium arsenide is reported as a function of surface treatment. Contacts to untreated gallium arsenide exhibit the expected high resistance. Surface cleaning by argon ion bombardment reduces the resistance by three orders of magnitude. The electrical resistance beyond 850 eV increases rapidly with ion bombardment energy. The resistance minimum at 850 eV is explained semiquantitatively in terms of a balance between cleaning and surface damage.

Blade row dynamic digital compressor program. Volume 1: J85 clean inlet flow and parallel compressor models

The results are presented of a one-dimensional dynamic digital blade row compressor model study of a J85-13 engine operating with uniform and with circumferentially distorted inlet flow. Details of the geometry and the derived blade row characteristics used to simulate the clean inlet performance are given. A stability criterion based upon the self developing unsteady internal flows near surge provided an accurate determination of the clean inlet surge line. The basic model was modified to include an arbitrary extent multi-sector parallel compressor configuration for investigating 180 deg 1/rev total pressure, total temperature, and combined total pressure and total temperature distortions. The combined distortions included opposed, coincident, and 90 deg overlapped patterns. The predicted losses in surge pressure ratio matched the measured data trends at all speeds and gave accurate predictions at high corrected speeds where the slope of the speed lines approached the vertical.

Exoelectron emission from a clean, annealed magnesium single crystal during oxygen adsorption

Exoelectron emission has been observed from a clean, annealed Mg (0001) surface during oxygen and chlorine adsorption at pressures of 0.000065 N/sq m and lower. The studies were performed in an ultrahigh vacuum system. The crystals were cleaned by argon-ion bombardment and annealed at 300 C. Auger electron spectroscopy was used to verify surface cleanliness, and low-energy electron diffraction was used to verify that the surface was annealed. The emission was found to be dependent on oxygen arrival rate. Two peaks were observed in the electron emission with exposure. Evidence is presented that the formation of the second peak corresponds to oxidation of the Mg surface. The results verify that electron emission occurs from a strain-free surface simply upon adsorption of oxygen. A qualitative explanation for the mechanisms of emission in terms of chemical effects is presented.

Fibre evaluation for spacecraft cleaning

The employment of vacuum brushes utilizing sable tail hair for the physical removal of particulates from spacecraft surfaces has become problematical in connection with a lack of compatibility of the bristle with sterilization and biological decontamination procedures required for spacecraft cleaning. An investigation was, therefore, conducted to find a suitable fiber which can replace sable bristle. Felor fiber was found to have the best properties for use in a motorized cleaning brush.
