Nucleon-Nucleon Scattering Up to N5LO in Chiral Effective Field Theory

During the past few decades a large effort has been made toward describing the NN interaction in the framework of chiral Effective Field Theory (EFT). The main idea is to exploit the symmetries of QCD to obtain an effective theory for low energy nuclear systems. In 2003, the first accurate charge-dependent NN potential in this scheme was developed and it has been applied to many ab-initio calculations, opening the possibility to study nuclear systems in a systematic and accurate way. It was shown that the fourth order (N3LO) was necessary and sufficient to describe the NN scattering data with a χ 2 /d.o.f on the order of so-called high precision potentials. However the systematics of chiral EFT also allow to relate two- and many-body interactions in a well-defined way. Since many-body forces make their first appearance at higher order, they are substantially smaller than their two-body counterparts, but may never-the-less be crucial for some processes. Thus, there are observables where they can have a big impact and, for example, there are indications that they solve the long standing Ay puzzle of N-d scattering. The last few years, have also seen substantial progress toward higher orders of chiral EFT which was motivated by the fact that only three-body forces of rather high order may solve some outstanding issues in microscopic nuclear structure and reactions. In this chapter we will review the latest contributions of the authors to development of chiral EFT based potentials up to N4LO as well as first calculations conducted for NN scattering at N5LO.

Chiral uncertainties in ab initio elastic nucleon-nucleus scattering

The effective interaction between a nucleon and a nucleus is one of the most important ingredients for reaction theories. Theoretical formulations were introduced early by Feshbach and Watson, and efforts of deriving and computing those ‘optical potentials’ in a microscopic fashion have a long tradition. However, only recently the leading order term in the Watson multiple scattering approach could be calculated fully ab initio, meaning that the same nucleon-nucleon (NN) interaction enters both the structure as well as the reaction pieces on equal footing. This allows the uncertainties from the underlying chiral effective NN interaction to be systematically explored in nucleon-nucleus elastic scattering observables. In this contribution the main ingredients for arriving at the ab initio leading order of the effective nucleon-nucleus interaction in the Watson approach will be reviewed. Concentrating on one specific chiral NN interaction from the LENPIC collaboration and light nuclei with a 0 + ground state, the leading order nucleon-nucleus interaction is calculated using up to the third chiral order (N2LO) in the nucleon-nucleon potential, and elastic scattering observables are extracted. Then pointwise as well as correlated uncertainty quantification is used for the estimation of the chiral truncation error. Elastic scattering observables for 4 He, 12 C, and 16 O for between 65 and 200 MeV projectile energy will be analyzed.

Uncertainties in ab initio nuclear structure calculations with chiral interactions

We present theoretical ground state energies and their uncertainties for p -shell nuclei obtained from chiral effective field theory internucleon interactions as a function of chiral order, fitted to two- and three-body data only. We apply a Similary Renormalization Group transformation to improve the numerical convergence of the many-body calculations, and discuss both the numerical uncertainties arising from basis truncations and those from omitted induced many-body forces, as well as chiral truncation uncertainties. With complete Next-to-Next-to-Leading (N 2 LO) order two- and three-body interactions, we find significant overbinding for the ground states in the upper p -shell, but using higher-order two-body potentials, in combination with N 2 LO three-body forces, our predictions agree with experiment throughout the p -shell to within our combined estimated uncertainties. The uncertainties due to chiral order truncation are noticeably larger than the numerical uncertainties, but they are expected to become comparable to the numerical uncertainties at complete N 3 LO.

Chiral Spin Textures in Amorphous Iron–Germanium Thick Films

Topological solitary fields, such as magnetic and polar skyrmions, are envisioned to revolutionize microelectronics. These configurations have been stabilized in solid-state materials with a global inversion symmetry breaking, which translates in magnetic materials into a vector spin exchange known as the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI), as well as spin chirality selection and isotropic solitons. This work reports experimental evidence of 3D chiral spin textures, such as helical spins and skyrmions with different chirality and topological charge, stabilized in amorphous Fe-Ge thick films. Overall, these results demonstrate that structurally and chemically disordered materials with a random DMI can resemble inversion symmetry broken systems with similar magnetic properties, moments, and states. Disordered systems are distinguished from systems with global inversion symmetry breaking by their degenerate spin chirality that allows for forming isotropic and anisotropic topological spin textures at remanence, while offering greater flexibility in materials synthesis, voltage, and strain manipulation.

Strong Induced Circular Dichroism in a Hybrid Lead‐Halide Semiconductor Using Chiral Amino Acids for Crystallite Surface Functionalization

Abstract Chirality is a desired property in functional semiconductors for optoelectronic, catalytic, and spintronic applications. Here, introducing enantiomerically‐pure 3‐aminobutyric acid (3‐ABA) into thin films of the 1D semiconductor dimethylammonium lead iodide (DMAPbI 3 ) is found to result in strong circular dichroism (CD) in the optical absorption. X‐ray diffraction and grazing incidence small angle X‐ray scattering (GISAXS) are applied to gain molecular‐scale insights into the chirality transfer mechanism, which is attributed to a chiral surface modification of DMAPbI 3 crystallites. This study demonstrates that the CD signal strength can be controlled by the amino‐acid content relative to the crystallite surface area. The CD intensity is tuned by the composition of the precursor solution and the spin‐coating time, thereby achieving anisotropy factors ( g abs ) as high as 1.75 × 10 –2 . Grazing incidence wide angle scattering reveals strong preferential ordering that can be suppressed via tailored synthesis conditions. Different contributions to the chiroptical properties are resolved by a detailed analysis of the CD signal utilizing an approach based on the Mueller matrix model. This report of a novel class of chiral hybrid semiconductors with precise control over their optical activity presents a promising approach for the design of circularly polarized light detectors and emitters.

Tuning Phase Purity in Chiral 2D Perovskites

The introduction of chiral organic spacers in low-dimensional metal-halide perovskites triggers chiroptical activity, which is appealing for spintronic applications. However, a comprehensive understanding of structure formation and the ability to control phase purity in such materials have yet to be developed. Herein, the impact of processing conditions on the phase purity, microstructure, and chiroptical properties of chiral 2D perovskites is explored. The anisotropic emergence of a 1D perovskite inside the 2D matrix and its dependence on the organic cation chirality, solvent, and thermal annealing conditions are shown. By controlling these parameters, the in-plane conductivity of the films is nearly doubled. Furthermore, it is demonstrated, for the first time, that solvent choice and the spatial configuration of the organic cation can have an impact on the residual lattice strain and the energetic disorder of the system. The fundamentals presented here can help to improve the film deposition methods for low-dimensional chiral perovskites, offering strategies to control phase purity.

Reversible Ferroelectric Polarization Modulation of Chiral Molecular Ferroelectrics by Circularly Polarized Light

Abstract The optical modulation of ferroelectric polarization constitutes a transformative, non‐contact strategy for the precise manipulation of ferroelectric properties, heralding advancements in optically stimulated ferroelectric devices. Despite its potential, progress in this domain is constrained by material limitations and the intricate nature of the underlying mechanisms. Recent studies have achieved efficient regulation of ferroelectric polarization and thermal conductivity in chiral ferroelectric thin films through the application of left‐ and right‐handed circularly polarized light (LCP and RCP). Differential absorption of circularly polarized light (CPL) induces nonequilibrium carrier dynamics, generating distinctive interfacial electrostatic fields that enable precise control of ultrathin ferroelectric films. For (R)‐BINOL−DIPASi and (S)‐BINOL−DIPASi (C 26 H 26 O 2 Si), polarization changes surpass 23%, exhibiting opposite response under LCP and RCP excitation. In R chiral films, remnant polarization decreases from 1.05 µC cm − 2 under LCP to 0.85 µC cm − 2 under RCP, whereas in S chiral films, polarization increases from 0.85 µC cm − 2 under LCP to 0.98 µC cm − 2 under RCP. This reversible modulation facilitates reliable switching between ON and OFF states, presenting the potential of chiral ferroelectric materials for flexible, high‐speed integrated photonic sensor technologies.

Helical Photonic Metamaterials for Encrypted Chiral Holograms

Helical structures are among the most quintessential three-dimensional (3D) forms that exhibit mirror asymmetry, a hallmark of chirality. Various structural parameters of helices directly linked to chiroptical properties highlight their importance as essential optical metamaterials for polarization-resolved sensors, imaging, and spectroscopies. However, such function-defining properties remain incompletely understood due to fabrication challenges and the lack of a relationship between structure and optical properties. Here, helical structures are analyzed parametrically, and correlations are established that are applicable to the design of chiral helical optical metamaterials. By systematically varying independent parameters—such as from single-turn to five-turn helices and from small major radii to larger ones optimized to fit the unit cell—the underlying relationships with ellipticty are revealed. In addition to theoretical modeling, the findings are experimentally validated using 3D printing and terahertz spectroscopy. The results demonstrate that optimized helical structures are mechanically tunable and exhibit unprecedented optical properties, including broadband and high-magnitude ellipticity spectra. Being embedded in soft elastomers, helical arrays can serve as soft, stretchable optical-mechanical sensors and holograms containing encoded information, such as barcodes and quick response (QR) codes. Chiral QR codes are realized using pixelated single helices with different handedness, demonstrating their potential as advanced encryption/decryption systems for security applications and chiral metaholograms.

Anomalous Magnetoelectric Coupling in the Paramagnetic State of a Chiral and Polar Magnet

Abstract Chiral magnets are excellent platforms for studying intertwined spin, charge, orbit, and lattice degrees of freedom in solid‐state materials. In this work, the anomalous magnetoelectric behavior in a chiral magnet K 2 Co 2 (SO 4 ) 3 is demonstrated using comprehensive experimental probes. This material adopts a P 2 1 3 chiral cubic structure at room temperature. Based on the results of high‐resolution synchrotron X‐ray diffraction, this study shows that the low‐temperature (<130 K) crystal structure is a P 2 1 monoclinic phase, both polar and chiral. Magnetic and thermodynamic measurements reveal highly frustrated magnetic interactions and possible non‐collinear antiferromagnetic ordering at an extremely low temperature ≈0.6 K. Critically, anomalous magnetoelectric correlations are experimentally detected in its paramagnetic temperature regime, which can arise from the synergetic interplay between magnetoelastic and piezoelectric effects. These findings thus indicate that K 2 Co 2 (SO 4 ) 3 is a unique material, displaying multiple emergent structural and magnetic phenomena. This is attributed to both its overall crystallographic symmetry and the fact that its magnetic ions are located at low‐symmetry sites.

Spin polarization through axially chiral linkers: Length dependence and correlation with the dissymmetry factor

Abstract The chiral‐induced spin selectivity (CISS) effect relates to the spin‐selective electron transport through chiral molecules; therefore, the chiral molecules act as spin filters. In past studies, correlation was found between the magnitude of the spin filtering and the intensity of the circular dichroism (CD) spectrum (the first Compton peak) of the molecules. Since the intensity of the CD peak relates to both the magnitude of the electric and magnetic dipole transitions, it was not clear which of these properties correlate with the CISS effect. This work aims at addressing this question. By studying the spin‐dependent conduction and the CD spectra of the thiol‐functionalized enantiopure binaphthalene (BINAP) and ternaphthalene (TERNAP), we found that both BINAP and TERNAP exhibit a similar spin polarization of 50%, despite the first Compton peak in TERNAP being almost twice as intense as the peak in BINAP. These results can be explained by the similar values of their anisotropy (or dissymmetry) factor, g abs , which is proportional to the magnetic transition dipole moment. Hence, we concluded that the CISS effect is proportional to the transition dipole moment in chiral molecules, namely, to the dissymmetry factor.

Universality between vector-like and chiral quiver gauge theories: anomalies and domain walls

We study low-energy dynamics of [SU($\textit{N}$)]$^K$ chiral quiver gauge theories in connection with $\mathcal{N}$ = 1 super Yang-Mills (SYM) theory, and quantum chromodynamics with bi-fundamental fermions (QCD(BF)). These theories can be obtained by $\mathbb Z_K$ orbifold projections of $\mathcal{N}$ = 1 SU($\textit{N K}$) SYM theory, but the perturbative planar equivalence does not extend nonperturbatively for $\textit{K}$ ≥ 3. In order to study low-energy behaviors, we analyze these systems using ’t Hooft anomaly matching and reliable semiclassics on $\mathbb R^3 × S^1$. Thanks to ’t Hooft anomaly that involves 1-form center symmetry and discrete chiral symmetry, we predict that chiral symmetry must be spontaneously broken in the confinement phase, and there exist $\textit{N}$ vacua. Theories with even $\textit{K}$ possess a physical θ angle despite the presence of massless fermions, and we further predict the $\textit{N}$-branch structure associated with it; the number of vacua is enhanced to 2$\textit{N}$ at θ = π due to spontaneous $\textit{C P}$ breaking. Both of these predictions are explicitly confirmed by reliable semiclassics on $\mathbb R^3 × S^1$ with the double-trace deformation. Symmetry and anomaly of odd-$\textit{K}$ theories are the same as those of the $\mathcal{N}$ = 1 SYM, and the ones of even-$\textit{K}$ theories are same as those of QCD(BF). We unveil why there exists universality between vector-like and chiral quiver theories, and conjecture that their ground states can be continuously deformed without quantum phase transitions. We briefly discuss anomaly inflow on the domain walls connecting the vacua of the theory and possible anomaly matching scenarios.

Uncovering a chirally suppressed mechanism of oνββ decay with LHC searches

Δ L = 2 lepton number violation (LNV) at the TeV scale could provide an alternative interpretation of positive signal(s) in future neutrinoless double beta (0 νββ ) decay experiments. An interesting class of models from this point of view are those that at low energies give rise to dimension-9 vector operators and a dimension-7 operator, both of whose 0 νββ -decay rates are “chirally suppressed”. We study and compare the sensitivities of 0 νββ -decay experiments and LHC searches to a simplified model in this class of TeV-scale LNV that is also SU(2) L × U(1) Y gauge invariant. The searches for 0 νββ decay, which are here diluted by a chiral suppression of the vector operators, are found to be less constraining than LHC searches whose reach is increased by the assumed kinematic accessibility of the mediator particles. For the chirally suppressed dimension-7 operator generated by TeV-scale mediators, in contrast, 0 νββ -decay searches place strong constraints on the size of the new Yukawa coupling. Signals of this model at the LHC and 0 νββ -decay experiments are entirely uncorrelated with the observed neutrinos masses, as these new sources of LNV give negligible contributions to the latter. We find the prospects for the high-luminosity LHC and ton-scale 0 νββ -decay experiments to uncover the chirally-suppressed mechanism with TeV-scale LNV to be promising. We also comment on the sensitivity of the 0 νββ -decay lifetime to certain unknown low-energy constants that in the case of dimension-9 scalar operators are expected to be large due to non-perturbative renormalization.

Celestial holography meets twisted holography: 4d amplitudes from chiral correlators

We propose a new program for computing a certain integrand of scattering amplitudes of four-dimensional gauge theories which we call the form factor integrand, starting from 6d holomorphic theories on twistor space. We show that the form factor integrands can be expressed as sums of products of 1.) correlators of a 2d chiral algebra, related to the algebra of asymptotic symmetries uncovered recently in the celestial holography program, and 2.) OPE coefficients of a 4d non-unitary CFT. We prove that conformal blocks of the chiral algebras are in one-to-one correspondence with local operators in 4d. We use this bijection to recover the Parke-Taylor formula, the CSW formula, and certain one-loop scattering amplitudes. Along the way, we explain and derive various aspects of celestial holography, incorporating techniques from the twisted holography program such as Koszul duality. This perspective allows us to easily and efficiently recover the infinite-dimensional chiral algebras of asymptotic symmetries recently extracted from scattering amplitudes of massless gluons and gravitons in the celestial basis. We also compute some simple one-loop corrections to the chiral algebras and derive the three-dimensional bulk theories for which these 2d algebras furnish an algebra of boundary local operators.

Chiral Four-Wave Mixing Signals with Circularly Polarized X-ray Pulses

Chiral four-wave mixing signals are calculated using the irreducible tensor formalism. Different polarization and crossing angle configurations allow to single out the magnetic dipole and the electric quadrupole interactions. Other configurations can reveal that the chiral interaction occurs at a given step within the nonlinear interaction pathways. Applications are made to the study of valence excitations of S-ibuprofen by chiral stimulated X-ray Raman signals at the carbon K-edge and by chiral visible 2D electronic spectroscopy.

Vibronic Coupling and Exciton Chirality: Electronic and Structural Rearrangement between Helical to Zero Momentum Molecular Exciton States

Helical porphyrin aggregates are attractive macromolecular nanostructures for biomimetic light-harvesting and energy transfer in solar energy technology due to their large light absorbing cross sections and promising energy conservation benefits from chiral-induced spin selectivity. However, with these soft materials, it is imperative that we understand how the nuclear degrees of freedom impact the excitonic energy landscape and dynamics, particularly pertaining to how it influences the chiral angular momentum of the excitons. To this end, we have measured time-resolved depolarization ratios using femtosecond stimulated Raman spectroscopy to uncover the vibronic coupling guided by molecular vibrations between excitons of different angular momentum in helical tetra(sulfonatophenyl)porphyrin aggregates. We find that while transient absorption anisotropy reveals rapid (1 ps lifetime) exciton rotation from helical to achiral states in the Q-band, time-resolved vibrational depolarization ratios evolve on remarkably faster time scales (<500 fs lifetime) for the totally symmetric 1530 cm –1 vibration and the nontotally symmetric 1540 cm –1 vibration. The time-resolved depolarization ratios of the 1540 cm –1 vibration, in particular, show strong evidence of vibronic coupling and nonadiabatic exciton behavior that mediates the nonradiative transition between chiral and achiral excitons. Furthermore, our study shows that for rational design of helical molecular aggregates for exciton transport, the vibronic coupling between excitons of different angular momenta driven by molecular vibrations must be considered especially in the case where chiral-induced spin selectivity is desired.

Giant topological longitudinal circular photo-galvanic effect in the chiral multifold semimetal CoSi

The absence of mirror symmetry, or chirality, is behind striking natural phenomena found in systems as diverse as DNA and crystalline solids. A remarkable example occurs when chiral semimetals with topologically protected band degeneracies are illuminated with circularly polarized light. Under the right conditions, the part of the generated photocurrent that switches sign upon reversal of the light’s polarization, known as the circular photo-galvanic effect, is predicted to depend only on fundamental constants. The conditions to observe quantization are non-universal, and depend on material parameters and the incident frequency. In this work, we perform terahertz emission spectroscopy with tunable photon energy from 0.2 –1.1 eV in the chiral topological semimetal CoSi. We identify a large longitudinal photocurrent peaked at 0.4 eV reaching ~550 μ A/V 2 , which is much larger than the photocurrent in any chiral crystal reported in the literature. Using first-principles calculations we establish that the peak originates only from topological band crossings, reaching 3.3 ± 0.3 in units of the quantization constant. Our calculations indicate that the quantized circular photo-galvanic effect is within reach in CoSi upon doping and increase of the hot-carrier lifetime. The large photo-conductivity suggests that topological semimetals could potentially be used as novel mid-infrared detectors.

Anomalous normal fluid response in a chiral superconductor UTe2

Abstract Chiral superconductors have been proposed as one pathway to realize Majorana normal fluid at its boundary. However, the long-sought 2D and 3D chiral superconductors with edge and surface Majorana normal fluid are yet to be conclusively found. Here, we report evidence for a chiral spin-triplet pairing state of UTe 2 with surface normal fluid response. The microwave surface impedance of the UTe 2 crystal was measured and converted to complex conductivity, which is sensitive to both normal and superfluid responses. The anomalous residual normal fluid conductivity supports the presence of a significant normal fluid response. The superfluid conductivity follows the temperature behavior predicted for an axial spin-triplet state, which is further narrowed down to a chiral spin-triplet state with evidence of broken time-reversal symmetry. Further analysis excludes trivial origins for the observed normal fluid response. Our findings suggest that UTe 2 can be a new platform to study exotic topological excitations in higher dimension.
