Breaking the curse of dimensionality: Solving configurational integrals for crystalline solids by tensor networks

Accurately evaluating configurational integrals for dense solids remains a central and difficult challenge in the statistical mechanics of condensed systems. Here, we present a tensor network approach that reformulates the high-dimensional configurational integral for identical-particle crystals into a sequence of computationally efficient summations. We represent the integrand as a high-dimensional tensor and apply tensor-train (TT) decomposition together with a custom TT-cross interpolation. This approach circumvents the need to explicitly construct the full tensor. We introduce tailored rank-1 and rank-2 schemes optimized for sharply peaked Boltzmann probability densities, typical for identical-particle crystals. When applied to the calculation of internal energy and pressure-temperature curves for crystalline Cu and Ar at high (GPa) pressures, as well as the alpha-to-beta phase transition diagram of Sn, our method accurately reproduces molecular dynamics simulation results using tight-binding, machine learning, hierarchical interacting particle–neural network, and modified embedded atom method potentials, all within seconds of computation time.

Visual Tool for Assessing Stability of DER Configurations on Three-Phase Radial Networks

Here, we present a method and tool for evaluating the placement of Distributed Energy Resources (DER) on distribution circuits in order to control voltages and power flows. Our previous work described Phasor-Based Control (PBC), a novel control framework where DERs inject real and reactive power to track voltage magnitude and phase angle targets. Here, we employ linearized power flow equations and integral controllers to develop a linear state space model for PBC acting on a three-phase unbalanced network. We use this model to evaluate whether a given inverter-based DER configuration admits a stable set of controller gains, which cannot be done by analyzing controllability nor by using the Lyapunov equation. Instead, we sample over a parameter space to identify a stable set of controller gains. Our stability analysis requires only a line impedance model and does not entail simulating the system or solving an optimization problem. We incorporate this assessment into a publicly available visualization tool and demonstrate three processes for evaluating many control configurations on the IEEE 123-node test feeder (123NF).

Design and Assembly of a Large-Aperture Nb 3 Sn Cos-Theta Dipole Coil With Stress Management in Dipole Mirror Configuration

The stress-management cos-theta (SMCT) coil is a new concept which has been proposed and is being developed at Fermilab in the framework of US Magnet Development Program (US-MDP) for high-field and/or large-aperture accelerator magnets based on low-temperature and high-temperature superconductors. The SMCT structure is used to reduce large coil deformations under the Lorentz forces and, thus, the excessively large strains and stresses in the coil. A large-aperture Nb 3 Sn SMCT dipole coil has been developed and fabricated at Fermilab to demonstrate and test the SMCT concept including coil design, fabrication technology and performance. The first SMCT coil has been assembled with 60-mm aperture Nb 3 Sn coil inside a dipole mirror configuration and will be tested separately and in series with the insert coil. Here this paper summarizes the large-aperture SMCT coil design and parameters and reports the coil fabrication steps and its assembly in dipole mirror configuration.

OptZConfig: Efficient Parallel Optimization of Lossy Compression Configuration

Lossless compressors have very low compression ratios that do not meet the needs of today's large-scale scientific applications that produce vast volumes of data. Error-bounded lossy compression (EBLC) is considered a critical technique for the success of scientific research. Although EBLC allows users to set an error bound for the compression, users have been unable to specify the requirements on the compression quality, limiting practical use. Our contributions are: (1) We formulate the problem of configuring EBLC to preserve a user-defined metric as an optimization problem. This allows many classes of new metrics to be preserved, which improves over current practices. (2) We present a framework, OptZConfig, that can adapt to improvements in the search algorithm, compressor, and metrics with minimal changes, enabling future advancements in this area. (3) We demonstrate the advantages of our approach against the leading methods to configure compressors to preserve specific metrics. Here, our approach improves compression ratios against a specialized compressor by up to 3 x, has a 56x speedup over FRaZ, 1000x speedup over MGARD-QOI post tuning, and 110x speedup over systematic approaches which had not been bounded by compressors before.

Constructive molecular configurations for surface-defect passivation of perovskite photovoltaics

Surface trap-mediated nonradiative charge recombination is a major limit to achieving high-efficiency metal-halide perovskite photovoltaics. The ionic character of perovskite lattice has enabled molecular defect passivation approaches through interaction between functional groups and defects. However, a lack of in-depth understanding of how the molecular configuration influences the passivation effectiveness is a challenge to rational molecule design. In this work, the chemical environment of a functional group that is activated for defect passivation was systematically investigated with theophylline, caffeine, and theobromine. When N-H and C=O were in an optimal configuration in the molecule, hydrogen-bond formation between N-H and I (iodine) assisted the primary C=O binding with the antisite Pb (lead) defect to maximize surface-defect binding. A stabilized power conversion efficiency of 22.6% of photovoltaic device was demonstrated with theophylline treatment.

Precautions of Using Three-Electrode Configuration to Measure Electrode Overpotential in Solid Oxide Electrochemical Cells: Insights from Finite Element Modeling

Accurate determination of electrode overpotentials is essential to assess the performance of the electrode and understand the rate-limiting steps involved. Three-electrode configuration with the use of a reference electrode at a fixed potential is a standard way to measure overpotential of a specific electrode in liquid electrochemical systems. However, application of such three-electrode configuration to solid electrochemical cells for overpotential determination is not straightforward and requires extra caution. Here we report a theoretical Finite Element Analysis on the geometrical requirements for which the reference electrode can be applied to anode- or electrolyte-supported solid oxide button cells. The modeling results suggest that the symmetry of the working and counter electrodes is the key factor determining if a reference electrode is suitable to use. For anode-supported fuel cells with asymmetrical working and counter electrodes, reference electrode cannot be used under all circumstances. To use reference electrode for overpotential measurements, electrolyte-supported cells with symmetrical semicircular-shaped electrodes are preferred. A data processing procedure has also been presented to obtain the electrode overpotential from the measured potential using the three-electrode scheme in solid oxide electrochemical cells.

mada-tools: MCP servers, configurations, skills, and examples for MADA

MADA-tools (Multi-Agent Design Assistant tools) is a library for defining MCP (Model Context Protocol) servers that can be used by AI agents in the MADA project. Each MCP server provides a focused set of tools that enhances an LLM's knowledge and capabilities for a specific domain, for example, how to launch jobs with Flux versus Slurm. The library makes it easy to configure and start multiple MCP servers using configuration files or command line options. Once running, these servers are intended to be consumed by one or more agents in the MADA ecosystem. The system is designed to be extensible so that future projects can contribute their own MCP servers, skills, and toolsets.

HP-FLEX: Field demonstration of the semantics-driven configuration of a Model Predictive Control system to make heat pumps flexible

Model Predictive Control (MPC) has demonstrated significant potential for optimizing building operations and enabling demand flexibility. However, the widespread adoption of MPC is hindered by complex manual configuration and commissioning processes that must be conducted by control experts working alongside building operators. These challenges drive up costs and reduce scalability, particularly when technical human resources and building automation systems are limited, such as in small and medium commercial buildings (SMCBs). This paper demonstrates how semantic standards, specifically ASHRAE 223P, can accelerate the adoption of MPC applications for load flexibility in SMCBs. The authors present a replicable control framework, titled “HP-FLEX” that leverages a building’s semantic model to bootstrap the required data configuration for an MPC controller developed for optimizing heat pump systems as flexible grid resources. The semantic model helps streamline the deployment workflow, particularly for site setup, data/control commissioning, and model setup. This integration enhances portability, transferability, and scalability of the HP-FLEX MPC, which has been developed to support MPC-based supervisory HVAC controllers in SMCBs. Additionally, the paper details the required building and thermostat metadata information to enable the HP-FLEX MPC based on field demonstrations. The new workflow was tested in a small commercial building located in California, U.S., and demonstrated a load shifting performance of 9% based on a dynamic pricing signal that varies by the hour. This work provides a practical pathway for transitioning sophisticated building applications from custom to standardized semantic representations, supporting the broader adoption of advanced control strategies like MPC. The framework also establishes a foundation for evolving metadata requirements as applications mature while maintaining compatibility with industry standards.

A LEAN SYSTEMS APPROACH TO IMPROVING MAINTENANCE OUTPUT AND CONFIGURATION MANAGEMENT

The purpose of this capstone paper is to apply a lean systems approach to the current maintenance planning program in the Assembly/Disassembly Organization. This capstone will take a two-pronged approach to address both output rate in maintenance planning and accurate configuration management resulting from maintenance work orders. In short, the current system suffers from waste in the planning process due lack of procedures to address varying maintenance packages, including maintenance packages which include changes to configuration managed systems. The capstone will detail a lean systems approach to proper characterization of maintenance jobs and integration of change management into the maintenance process in order to retain proper control of the systems used to produce in this nuclear facility.

A series of experiments will be performed to test the integral effects of molybdenum on the reactivity of a critical system. These experiments will use the 7uPCX assembly with the 1.55 cm triangular pitch grid plates. Molybdenum sleeves, consisting of 19.6 inch long 0.5-inch nominal outside diameter molybdenum tubes with 0.031-inch nominal wall thickness and centering hardware, will be placed on some of the fuel rods in the array. The purpose of this analysis is to examine two configurations of the 7uPCX using the 1.55 cm triangular pitch grid plates in fully-reflected approach-to-critical experiments with the number of fuel rods in the array as the approach parameter. This document presents the results of the analysis that was done to allow completion of the 7uPCX Configuration Checklist from Appendix A of SPRF-AP-005 [SNL 2020] for the cores noted above. The checklists for these cores are shown in Appendix A.

Modeling DOE Standard Canister Configurations with Updated Surface Chemistry

Road-ready and final disposition packaging configurations for the advanced test reactor (ATR) fuel currently specifies storage within helium backfilled DOE sealed standard canisters. The aluminum cladding of the ATR fuel contains an oxyhydroxide layer of boehmite/bayerite that generates hydrogen when subjected to irradiation. Understanding the effect of this hydrogen buildup over time to important for long term storage considerations. Previous modeling efforts have built a coupled CFD-chemical model to simulate the temperature gas phase concentrations within the DOE sealed standard canisters. These models have coupled the temperature conditions to both the gas phase radiolysis chemistry and the surface chemistry associated with the oxyhydroxide layer. Continued experimental work has identified trends for aluminum surrogate samples with oxyhydroxide layers for tests done at higher dose rates. At low initial doses a fast generation rate of hydrogen occurs which starts to roll over to a lower generation rate as the total dose applied in increased. A previous study created a small-scale chemical model was built to replicate a mini-canister surrogate system at SRNL as well as for the smaller capsule tests performed at INL. The previous iteration of the model utilized step function for its G-values for the hydrogen generation over a 200-year period. This model makes an update to the surface chemistry to account for theorized surface chemistry reactions allowing for oxygen to remain bounded to the oxyhydroxide layer. As additional experiments continue, the kinetic fits may be adjusted to adapt to new data. Three canister configurations are modeled – the base 18-inch, 15-foot DOR standard canister with 30 ATR fuel elements, an 18-inch, 10-foot DOE standard canister with 32 ATR fuel elements and a 24-inch, 10-foot DOE standard canister with 40 ATR fuel elements. In previous reports, the primary sensitivity of the canister conditions was identified as the decay heat of the fuel and the dried condition of the fuel. Only these parameters are studied in the report. For the nominal case with dried fuel, the hydrogen generation is only about 2%, so it is even less than the flammability limit if it were exposed to oxygen. For the densely packed 18-inch case the total hydrogen concentration is only around 4% with the nominal decay heat. For the densely packed 24-inch case the total hydrogen concentration is only 2.5%, roughly 20% higher than the original packing design, and still under flammability conditions if exposed to oxygen.

Passenger Boarding Station and Curbfront Configuration Concepts for On-Demand Services with Small Automated Vehicles: Preprint

This paper explores the various configurations of off-line stations and vehicle berthing that have been found to be fundamentally important parameters in the analysis of system performance, operations, and capacity. The proposed Automated Transit Network system concept, which provides a direct ride between a passenger's origin and destination station, is applicable to both fixed guideway automated transit and to systems with self-driving vehicles. Addressed at a conceptual level are the vehicle/station interface in terms of Americans with Disability Act compliance and station capacity concerns. The concept of open-edge platforms monitored by advanced sensing technology combined with artificial intelligence-powered perception for the purpose of protecting passengers from entering the active vehicle lanes is also discussed. Finally, the paper draws initial conclusions on how these station configurations, operational complexities, and associated costs can be better understood through appropriate research and development.

Towards an Era of Low-Temperature Integral Critical Experiments: Surrogate Testing of Low-Temperature TEX Configurations

United States and IAEA regulations for the transportation of radioactive materials require that fissile materials must be subcritical under expected ambient temperatures ranging from -40°C to 38°C. While historical experiments have been conducted at room and elevated temperatures, no criticality integral benchmarks exist for temperatures below room temperature. The Low-Temperature Thermal Epithermal eXperiments (LT-TEX) aim to provide benchmark evaluations down to -40°C. The LT-TEX design incorporates stacked HEU plates interspersed with varying thicknesses of polyethylene disks to provide varying levels of moderation, with five configurations at 20°C having already been benchmarked. A novel vacuum/cryogenic chamber was fabricated to contain the LT-TEX configurations in a thermally isolated environment and cool it to -40°C. Prior to testing with fissile materials, testing with surrogate fuel plates was performed to characterize the thermal properties of the system, ensure no condensation forms on the stack, and to test that the uranium plates would not warp, or fracture during the thermal cycling. Surrogate testing has characterized the cryogenic chamber and verified its viability to perform the benchmark experiments, allowing for the next steps in the LT-TEX experimental campaign. The results of the surrogate testing are discussed and compared to heat transfer calculations performed as part of the experiment design process, to establish confidence in the thermal behavior of the system.
