Renewable Aromatics from Syngas

This study focuses on developing a catalytic process for the aromatization of mixed olefin (comprised of C 2 -C 6 ) over various metal doped zeolites towards the formation of large aromatics (preferably C 8 -C 16 ) compliance to the sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). Experiments were carried out using model olefin feedstocks containing either ethylene (C 2 ) or mixture of C 2 and C 3+ olefins. Both the catalyst composition and process parameters were evaluated in detail to identify their impact on the formation large aromatics. We specifically focus on the aromatization of ethylene as the model reaction and evaluated the impact of C 2+ olefins and paraffins that may present in the real feedstock. In all the reaction condition, aromatization of ethylene was used as the baseline to evaluate the effect of larger olefins or paraffins. Our results show that at this reaction condition paraffins remained either inert or show positive impact on the formation of large aromatics. While C 2 and C 3 olefins are highly reactive towards aromatization during reaction condition, large olefins are less reactive and thus, strategy was developed to oligomerize these large olefins (C 4+ ) alongside the aromatization of smaller olefins (C 2 /C 3 ).

Deep mitigation of CO 2 and non-CO 2 greenhouse gases toward 1.5 °C and 2 °C futures

Stabilizing climate change well below 2 °C and towards 1.5 °C requires comprehensive mitigation of all greenhouse gases (GHG), including both CO 2 and non-CO 2 GHG emissions. Here we incorporate the latest global non-CO 2 emissions and mitigation data into a state-of-the-art integrated assessment model GCAM and examine 90 mitigation scenarios pairing different levels of CO 2 and non-CO 2 GHG abatement pathways. We estimate that when non-CO 2 mitigation contributions are not fully implemented, the timing of net-zero CO 2 must occur about two decades earlier. Conversely, comprehensive GHG abatement that fully integrates non-CO 2 mitigation measures in addition to a net-zero CO 2 commitment can help achieve 1.5 °C stabilization. While decarbonization-driven fuel switching mainly reduces non-CO 2 emissions from fuel extraction and end use, targeted non-CO 2 mitigation measures can significantly reduce fluorinated gas emissions from industrial processes and cooling sectors. Our integrated modeling provides direct insights in how system-wide all GHG mitigation can affect the timing of net-zero CO 2 for 1.5 °C and 2 °C climate change scenarios.

Ab initio modeling and thermodynamics of hydrated plutonium oxalates

An ab initio study on the plutonium oxalate hydrates: Pu 2 (C 2 O 4 ) 3 ·10H 2 O and Pu(C 2 O 4 ) 2 ·6H 2 O, using PBE exchange-correlation with D3 dispersion correction and Hubbard correction for the plutonium atoms, was performed and compared to experimental vibrational spectral and thermodynamic property values. Here we demonstrated that this technique can accurately predict the experimental infrared spectra Pu(III) oxalate hydrate, as well as the Raman peak of PuO 2 (used to calculate the thermodynamic properties of the oxalates). For Pu(IV) oxalate hydrate we found that our predicted structure agreed qualitatively with PXRD measurements, the only available experimental determination of the structure. Using this method at standard temperature and pressure, we predicted standard enthalpies of formation of -6,755 kJ mol -1 and -3,923 kJ mol -1 and standard Gibbs free energy of formation of -5,899 kJ mol -1 and -3,386 kJ mol -1 for Pu 2 (C 2 O 4 ) 3 ·10H 2 O and Pu(C 2 O 4 ) 2 ·6H 2 O, respectively.

Density sensitive C 2 lines in cool giant stars

The density sensitivity of the emission lines within the ultraviolet 0.01 multiplet of C II near 2325 A was examined in additional late type giants and supergiants with deep LWR high dispersion exposures. The new data support the original contention based on these lines that noncoronal red giants posses geometrically extended chromospheres.

Evaluation of the Tenti S6 model for hydrocarbon fuels at elevated temperatures using filtered Rayleigh scattering measurements

This Letter targets the assessment of the well-known Tenti S6 model for predicting the Rayleigh–Brillouin scattering (RBS) spectra of select gas–phase hydrocarbon fuels (CH 4 , C 2 H 2 , C 2 H 4 , C 3 H 8 , and C 4 H 10 ) over a temperature range of 300 to 700 K. The Tenti S6 model is evaluated by comparing filtered Rayleigh scattering (FRS) measurements to synthetic FRS signals generated from the combination of the Tenti S6 output and an accurate iodine absorption filter model. Here, the experimental and synthetic FRS results agree very well (<3% difference) over the full temperature range for CH 4 , C 2 H 2 , and C 2 H 4 , indicating accurate calculation of the RBS spectra. For C 3 H 8 and C 4 H 10 , there are some large differences between the experimental and synthetic FRS results which cannot be resolved through tuning of bulk viscosity, internal heat capacity, or inclusion of vibrational degrees of freedom, suggesting the need for detailed measurements of the Rayleigh–Brillouin spectra.

Interfacial charge transfer driven by surface termination-controlled Ti 2 C MXene for enhanced hydrogen storage in magnesium

Two-dimensional transition metal carbides and nitrides (MXenes) with layered structure and high conductivity have been effectively utilized in various energy materials, including as a catalytic support of MgH 2 for hydrogen storage. However, the terminal groups formed on the surface during the etching step tend to deactivate reactive Mg metal and add dead mass, thereby deteriorating the catalytic role of MXene in hydrogen sorption of Mg. For this work, we exploited a molten-salt derived MXene with easily modifiable –Cl terminations, compared to conventional –O, –OH and –F groups, and synthesized a composite of Mg and delaminated Ti 2 CCl x MXene to improve the hydrogen storage performance of Mg through charge transfer. This strategy enables the formation of an intimate interface between Mg and MXene, facilitating charge transfer and thereby boosting the catalytic effect. The resulting composite demonstrates significantly enhanced hydrogen sorption kinetics by modulating Mg–H bond strength. This novel approach of modifying surface terminations leverages the unique properties of MXene as a superior support for active materials, offering broader applications in energy materials.

Strong field ionization and dissociation dynamics of vinyl bromide (C 2 H 3 Br) initiated by few-cycle pulses

Photoelectron-photoion (PEPICO) and photoion-photoion (PIPICO) coincidence measurements, coupled with a few-cycle intense laser field, were employed to investigate strong field ionization/dissociation dynamics of vinyl bromide (C₂H₃Br). The angular streaking technique was used to map the recoil-frame angle-dependent ionization rates to identify ionizing orbitals. Dissociative single ionization was mainly attributed to ionizing the lower lying molecular orbitals, suggesting that direct ionization dominates with few-cycle pulses. Three dissociative double ionization channels, both prompt and delayed fragmentation, were identified. Theoretical analysis using time-dependent configuration interaction with complex absorbing potential (TDCI-CAP) and high-level electronic structure methods was performed to elucidate the underlying ionization and dissociation mechanisms.

Double Intramolecular 1,2 C–H Addition of o -Methyl Groups To Form Ruthenium Pincer Double Tuck-In Complexes

Ruthenium pincer complexes have a rich history of coordination and reaction chemistries. In this work, we report our discoveries of previously unreported Ru pincer coordination geometries. We found that mono tuck-in κ 4 -ArPN H PRuLCl complexes react with NaN(SiMe 3 ) 2 producing double tuck-in mer-κ 5 -ArPN H PRuL complexes. Interestingly, when κ 4 -MesPN H PRuCl is dehydrohalogenated, the resulting double tuck-in complex binds N 2 , forming the nitrogen complex κ 5 -MesPN H PRuN 2 . Further, the mer-κ 5 -ArPN H PRuL complexes thermally isomerize to the fac-κ 5 -ArPN H PRuL isomers, which is an uncommon reaction for pincer complexes. The mer-κ 5 -ArPN H PRuL complexes react with CO and CO 2 to form amide κ 4 -ArPN H PRu(CO)L or carbamate κ 5 -ArPN(CO 2 )PRuL complexes, respectively, supporting the hypothesis that the κ 4 -ArPNPRuL amide intermediates are accessible and reactive.

Tailorable Multi–Modular Pore–Space–Partitioned Vanadium Metal–Organic Frameworks for Gas Separation

Currently, few porous vanadium metal-organic frameworks (V-MOFs) are known and even fewer are obtainable as single crystals, resulting in limited information on their structures and properties. Here this work demonstrates remarkable promise of V-MOFs by presenting an extensible family of V-MOFs with tailorable pore geometry and properties. The synthesis leverages inter-modular synergy on a tri-modular pore-partitioned platform. New V-MOFs show a broad range of structural features and sorption properties suitable for gas storage and separation applications for C 2 H 2 /CO 2 , C 2 H 6 /C 2 H 4 , and C 3 H 8 /C 3 H 6 . The c/a ratio of the hexagonal cell, a measure of pore shape, is tunable from 0.612 to 1.258. Other tunable properties include pore size from 5.0 to 10.9 Å and surface area from 820 to 2964 m 2 g –1 . With C 2 H 2 /CO 2 selectivity from 3.3 to 11 and high uptake capacity for C 2 H 2 from 65.2 to 182 cm 3 g –1 (298K, 1 bar), an efficient separation is confirmed by breakthrough experiments. The near-record high uptake for C 2 H 6 (166.8 cm 3 g –1 ) contributes to the promise for C 2 H 6 -selective separation of C 2 H 6 /C 2 H 4 . The multi-module pore expansion enables transition from C 3 H 6 -selective to more desirable C 3 H 8 -selective separation with extraordinarily high C 3 H 8 uptake (254.9 cm 3 g –1 ) and high separation potential (1.25 mmol g –1 ) for C 3 H 8 /C 3 H 6 (50:50 v/v) mixture.

Ultrafast Raman thermometry in driven YBa 2 C u 3 O 6.48

Signatures of photoinduced superconductivity have been reported in cuprate materials subjected to a coherent phonon drive. A “cold” superfluid was extracted from the transient Terahertz conductivity and was seen to coexist with “hot” uncondensed quasiparticles, a hallmark of a driven-dissipative system of which the interplay between coherent and incoherent responses is not well understood. Here, time resolved spontaneous Raman scattering was used to probe the lattice temperature in the photoinduced superconducting state of YBa 2 ⁢C⁢u 3 ⁢O 6.48 . An increase in lattice temperature of up to 140 K was observed by measuring the time dependent Raman scattering intensity of an undriven “spectator” phonon mode. This value is consistent with the estimated increase in quasiparticle temperature measured under the same excitation conditions. These temperature changes provide quantitative information on the nature of the driven state and its decay, and may suggest a strategy to optimize this effect.
