A harmonic analysis of lunar topography

A global lunar topographic map has been derived from existing earth-based and orbital observations supplemented in areas without data by a linear autocovariance predictor. Of 2592 bins, each 5 deg square, 1380 (64.7% by area) contain at least one measurement. A spherical harmonic analysis to degree 12 yields a mean radius of 1737.53 plus or minus 0.03 km (formal standard error) and an offset of the center of figure of 1.98 plus or minus 0.06 km toward (19 plus or minus 2) deg S, (194 plus or minus 1) deg E. A Bouguer gravity map, derived from a 12-degree free-air gravity model and the present topography data, is presented for an elevation of 100 km above the mean surface. It is confirmed that the low-degree gravity harmonics are determined primarily by surface height variations and only secondarily by lateral density variations.

Longitudinal variations of very-low-frequency chorus activity in the magnetosphere - Evidence of excitation by electrical power transmission lines

The distribution of VLF chorus in the high-altitude magnetosphere as detected by the Ogo 3 satellite was investigated. Chorus occurrence frequency over 4,668 samples of 5 min of broadband data was computed for Northern Hemisphere bins of 10 deg by 10 deg in dipole invariant latitude and longitude. Peaks in activity were noted over Alaska, the eastern U.S. and Canada, western Europe, and western Siberia, and were shown not to be the result of biased sampling. It is suggested that power line radiation of only about 1 W or less at a given harmonic frequency may be sufficient to stimulate the observed chorus activity and that such power levels can be expected in industrial areas or from large distribution networks. Preliminary results show that chorus starting frequencies are highly correlated with 60 Hz harmonics in the American sector and with 50 Hz harmonics in the European sector.

Storage and feeding of coal

Reliable feeding of coal from storage bins to process requires the knowledge of the behavior of coal during flow. The study of the flow of bulk solids was undertaken in the 1950's and led to the development of flow ability testing equipment and of the Mass Flow concept of design for reliable flow. The theory has since been expanded to two-phase, solids-gas system, and has found world wide application in the design of storage and feeding systems.

Yield spectra and the continuous-slowing-down approximation

The continuous-slowing-down approximation (CSDA) and the modified discrete-energy-bin (MDEB) method are used to calculate a yield spectra U(E, E sub 0) of electrons with energy E resulting from a primary of energy E sub 0. The results of the two calculations are then compared. The MDEB method is found to produce consistently more ions per energy loss while at the same time producing less excitations of some of the low-lying states when compared with the CSDA. These discrepancies can be explained by studying the contributions from the individual generations of electrons to the yield spectra. An integral equation for the solution of the yield spectra is also presented.

Electron impact on atmospheric gases. II - Yield spectra

A concept yield spectrum is introduced and this two-dimensional function is calculated, using a modified discrete energy bin method for 50-eV to 10-keV incident electrons impacting on the gases Ar, H2, H2O, O2, N2, O, CO, CO2, and He. The yield spectrum is amenable to physical interpretation, accurate analytic representation, and convenient application to the determination of all types of yields needed in aeronomical problems.

Nimbus 6 ERB scanner studies for development of Earth Radiation Budget Satellite System (ERBSS)

The Nimbus 6 ERB scanner data were conducted to support the development of the Earth Radiation Budget Satellite System project. The ERB data were processed in terms of Earth targets and angular bins and used to evaluate currently available directional radiation models for the longwave and shortwave spectral ranges. Results indicate that available longwave models are adequate for the most part while available shortwave models are inadequate. An effort was initiated to develop improved shortwave models for various cloud conditions and various surface types for cloud free conditions.

Energy deposition in a gaseous mixture

Existing models in planetary aeronomy involve a variety of possible gaseous mixtures subjected to charged particle bombardment. In the present paper, a phenomenological approach to electron degradation in such mixtures is proposed to facilitate analysis of such problems. Existing parameterized yield spectra for a variety of gases, computed by a discrete energy bin method, are used as a basis for constructing a parameterized composite yield spectrum for an arbitrary mixture. The approach proposed is an improvement over the continuous slow-down approximation in that discreteness is taken into account phenomenologically. The advantages are in the ease of application to aeronomical problems involving variable mixtures.

Design and Manufacture of Wheels for A Dual-Mode (Manned - Automatic) Lunar Surface Roving Vehicle. Volume 1: Detailed Technical Report

The concept development, testing, evaluation, and the selection of a final wheel design concept for a dual-mode lunar surface vehicle (DLRV) is detailed. Four wheel configurations were fabricated (one open wheel and three closed wheel) (and subjected to a series of soft soil, mechanical, and endurance tests. Results show that the open wheel has lower draw-bar pull (slope climbing) capability in loose soil due to its higher ground pressure and tendency to dig in at high wheel slip. Endurance tests indicate that a double mesh, fully enclosed wheel can be developed to meet DLRV life requirements. There is, however, a 1.0 to 1.8 lb/wheel weight penalty associated with the wheel enclosure. Also the button cleats used as grousers for the closed-type wheels result in local stress concentration and early fatigue failure of the wire mesh. Load deflection tests indicate that the stiffness of the covered wheel increased by up to 50% after soil bin testing, due to increased friction between the fabric and the wire mesh caused by the sand. No change in stiffness was found for the open wheel. The single woven mesh open wheel design with a chevron tread is recommended for continued development

Solar energy system performance evaluaton: Seasonal report for Solaron-Akron, Akron, Ohio

The operational and thermal performance of the solar energy system by Solaron Corporation is described. The system was designed to provide an 1940 square foot floor area with space heating and domestic hot water for a dual-level single family residence in Akron, Ohio. The solar energy system uses air as the heat transport medium, has a 546 square foot flat plate collector array subsystem, a 270 cubic foot rock thermal storage bin subsystem, a domestic hot water preheat tank, pumps, controls and transport lines. In general, the performance of the Solaron Akron solar energy system was somewhat difficult to assess for the November 1978 through October 1979 time period. The problems relating to the control systems, various solar energy leakages, air flow correction factors and instrumentation cause a significant amount of subjectivity to be involved in the performance assessment for this solar energy system. Had these problems not been present, it is felt that this system would have exhibited a resonably high level of measured performance.

Rain rate range profiling from a spaceborne radar

At certain frequencies and incidence angles the relative invariance of the surface scattering properites over land can be used to estimate the total attenuation and the integrated rain from a spaceborne attenuation-wavelength radar. The technique is generalized so that rain rate profiles along the radar beam can be estimated, i.e., rain rate determination at each range bin. This is done by modifying the standard algorithm for an attenuating-wavelength radar to include in it the measurement of the total attenuation. Simple error analyses of the estimates show that this type of profiling is possible if the total attenuation can be measured with a modest degree of accuracy.

Solar energy system performance evaluation. Seasonal report for SEECO Lincoln, Lincoln, Nebraska

The Solar Engineering and Equipment Company (SEECO) Lincoln solar energy system, designed for space heating only, is described and its operational performance for a 12 month period from April 1979 through March 1980 is evaluated. The system met 27 percent of the space heating load; however, system losses into the heated space from the storage bin and ductwork were significant. Reducing these losses would add appreciably to the system's efficiency. Net fossil energy savings were 11.31 million BTUs.

Solar energy system performance evaluation report for Solaron-Duffield, Duffield, Virginia

The Solaron Duffield Solar Energy System was designed to provide 51 percent of the space heating, and 49 percent of the domestic hot water (DHW) to a two story 1940 square foot area residence using air as the transport medium. The system consists of a 429 square foot collector array, a 265 cubic foot rock thermal storage bin, heat exchangers, an 80 gallon DHW preheat tank, pumps, blowers, controls, air ducting and associated plumbing. A air-to-liquid heat pump coupled with a 1,000gallon water storage tank provides for auxiliary space heating and can also be used for space cooling. A 52 gallon electric DHW tank using the solar preheated water provides domestic hot water to the residence. The solar system, which became operational July 1979, has the following modes of operation: First Stage: (1) collector to storage and DHW; (2)collector to space heating; (3) storage to load. Second Stage: (4) heat pump auxiliary direct; (5) auxiliary heat from heat pump storage. Third Stage: (6) electrical resistance (strip) heat.
