Structure and magnetism across the Sr 2- x Ba x NiOsO 6 phase diagram: Understanding magnetic superexchange between first and third row transition metal ions

The crystal chemistry and magnetism of compositions in the Sr 2-x Ba x NiOsO 6 phase diagram have been investigated to better understand the superexchange interactions between 3d and 5d transition metal ions. Compositions with x < 1.35 crystallize with the double perovskite structure, while those with x > 1.83 crystallize in a trigonal structure that is a cation ordered variant of the 6H hexagonal perovskite structure. The Sr-rich double perovskites undergo a cubic to tetragonal distortion upon cooling that is driven by out-of-phase octahedral tilting. The tetragonal distortion occurs upon cooling below 650 K in Sr 2 NiOsO 6 . The temperature of this transition decreases as the barium content increases and is completely suppressed for x ≥ 1.2. All compositions in the double perovskite region become spin glasses below T g ≈ 40 K, due to the competition between ferromagnetic Ni–Os and antiferromagnetic Ni–Ni and Os–Os superexchange interactions. The double perovskite compositions that are rich in barium, like Sr 0.8 Ba 1.2 NiOsO 6 show some signs of magnetic ordering in small clusters, but the presence of Ba/Sr disorder inhibits long-range magnetic order. Trigonal Ba 2 NiOsO 6 orders ferrimagnetically below T C = 108 K. In conclusion, the magnetic structure of this compound contains ferromagnetic ~180° Ni–O–Os interactions and antiferromagnetic ~90° Ni–O–Os interactions, both in agreement with the Goodenough-Kanamori rules.

Unusual superparamagnetic behavior in bulk Ba 0.198 La 0.784 Ti 0.096 Fe 0.8 O 3-δ

Here, we report the observation of superparamgnetic behavior induced by the substitution La 3+ by Ba 2+ at A-sites and Fe +3 by Ti 4+ at B-sites. Ba 0.198 La 0.784 Ti 0.096 Fe 0.8 O 3-δ was synthesized via solid state reaction. The Rietveld refinements revealed an orthorhombic (Pbnm). The low-mag STEM results showed that the particles were found to exhibit square like shape and formed in single crystal with high degree of crystallinity. The particle size ranges of 50 300 nm. Element mapping demonstrates a complementary distribution between Ba and La, while homogenous distribution is found for Fe and O. The optical band gap determined from UV-vis analysis is equal to 1.93 eV which is smaller than the reported one for LaFeO 3 and BaTiO 3 . The hysteresis loops at 300 K and 10 K show superparamagnetic behavior, which deviate extremely from the antiferromagnetic nature of LaFeO 3 perovskite. The temperature dependent magnetization demonstrates that the material kept a net magnetization of 12.29 (emu/g) at very low temperature.

Ba 4 RuMn 2 O 10 : A Noncentrosymmetric Polar Crystal Structure with Disordered Trimers

Phase-pure polycrystalline Ba 4 RuMn 2 O 10 was prepared and determined to adopt the noncentrosymmetric polar crystal structure (space group Cmc2 1 ) based on results of second harmonic generation, convergent beam electron diffraction, and Rietveld refinements using powder neutron diffraction data. The crystal structure features zigzag chains of corner-shared trimers, which contain three distorted face-sharing octahedra. The three metal sites in the trimers are occupied by disordered Ru/Mn with three different ratios: Ru1:Mn1 = 0.202(8):0.798(8), Ru2:Mn2 = 0.27(1):0.73(1), and Ru3:Mn3 = 0.40(1):0.60(1), successfully lowering the symmetry and inducing the polar crystal structure from the centrosymmetric parent compounds Ba 4 T 3 O 10 (T = Mn, Ru; space group Cmca). The valence state of Ru/Mn is confirmed to be +4 according to X-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy. Ba 4 RuMn 2 O 10 is a narrow bandgap (~0.6 eV) semiconductor exhibiting spin-glass behavior with strong magnetic frustration and antiferromagnetic interactions.

Encapsulation of Ba in InSb Framework Introduces Chirality in Clathrate-Like BaIn 4 Sb 4

The discovery of Zintl compounds remains a powerful strategy for identifying materials with tunable electronic and thermal transport properties. During a concerted search for new inorganic clathrates with In–Sb frameworks, we discovered BaIn 4 Sb 4 . The composition of this phase deviates from that expected for a type-I clathrate with tetrahedral coordination of all In and Sb atoms (Ba 8 In 31 Sb 15 ). Instead, in the chiral structure of BaIn 4 Sb 4 (space group P 3 1 21, No. 152), a part of the In atoms have a trigonal planar coordination of 1In + 2Sb, forming Sb 2 –In–In–Sb 2 nonplanar fragments isostructural to diborane(4) B 2 H 4 with D 2 d symmetry. Ba atoms are located inside 16-vertex In 8 Sb 8 polyhedra, which share vertices and edges to form a chiral framework around the 3 1 screw axes. The title compound is electron-balanced, [Ba 2+ ][In 2+ ] 2 [In 3+ ] 2 [Sb3–] 4 , which was confirmed by characterization of the charge and heat transport properties. BaIn 4 Sb 4 exhibits a low thermal conductivity and high Seebeck coefficient, suggesting its untapped potential for thermoelectric applications. Finally, density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicate that chemical doping may enhance carrier concentration and improve the originally low electrical conductivity, thus enhancing thermoelectric performance.

Spinons and damped phonons in the spin- 1 2 quantum liquid Ba 4 Ir 3 O 10 observed by Raman scattering

In spin-1/2 Mott insulators, nonmagnetic quantum liquid phases are often argued to arise when the system shows no magnetic ordering, but identifying positive signatures of these phases or related spinon quasiparticles can be elusive. Here, we use Raman scattering to provide three signatures for spinons in a possible spin-orbit quantum liquid material Ba 4 Ir 3 O 10 : (1) a broad hump, which we show can arise from Luttinger liquid spinons in Raman with parallel photon polarizations normal to one-dimensional chains; (2) strong phonon damping from phonon-spin coupling via the spin-orbit interaction; and (3) the absence of (1) and (2) in the magnetically ordered phase that is produced when 2% of Ba is substituted by Sr [(Ba 0.98 Sr 0.02 ) 4 Ir 3 O 10 ]. Furthermore, the phonon damping via itinerant spinons seen in this quantum liquid insulator suggests a mechanism for enhancing thermoelectricity in strongly correlated conductors, through a neutral quantum liquid that need not affect electronic transport.

Quadrupole and octupole collectivity in 143 Ba

The neutron-rich barium nuclei have been the subject of intense interest due to the enhanced octupole correlations they are predicted to exhibit. The observation of enhanced octupole collectivity in 144,146 Ba as measured in sub-barrier Coulomb excitation, consistent with static octupole deformation, has further heightened this interest. In the present work, these studies are extended to the neighboring odd-mass 143 Ba to investigate the interplay between single-particle and collective octupole degrees of freedom. A new measurement of the first 9/2 – -state lifetime is also presented. Reflection-Asymmetric Triaxial Particle Rotor Model calculations indicate that the negative-parity bands in 143 Ba can be understood as a decoupled structure of νh 9/2 parentage, while the positiveparity bands are built on a decoupled octupole phonon. Here, no evidence for E3 excitation is observed in this work, but an upper limit is placed on the E3 matrix element to the lowest octupole band.

Signature splitting of the g 7 / 2 [ 404 ] 7 / 2 + bands in Ba 131 and Ce 133

Excited states in Ba 131 and Ce 133 were studied using in-beam γ -ray spectroscopy through the Sn 122 ( C 13 , 4 n ) Ba 131 and Te 125 ( C 12 , 4 n ) Ce 133 reactions, respectively. A strongly coupled band, associated with the ν g 7 / 2 [ 404 ] 7 / 2 + configuration, was identified in Ba 131 and Ce 133 . It is the first time to observe the ν g 7 / 2 [ 404 ] 7 / 2 + bands in the N = 75 isotones. The signature partners exhibit considerable energy splitting in comparison with those in the π g 7 / 2 [ 404 ] 7 / 2 + bands in the odd- A Ta and Re isotopes. Here, extensive cranked shell model and quasiparticle-plus-triaxial-rotor model calculations reveal the origin of the signature splitting, which depends not only on the triaxiality, but also on the configuration mixing with nearby low- j orbitals.

Complete β-decay patterns of 142 Cs, 142 Ba, and 142 La determined using total absorption spectroscopy

Background: The β decays of fission products produced in nuclear fuel are important for nuclear energy applications and fundamental science of reactor antineutrinos. In particular, nuclear reactor safety is related to the decay modes of radioactive neutron-rich nuclei, primarily via the emission of γ rays, neutrons, and electrons. Additionally nuclear reactors are the most powerful man-made source of antineutrinos emitted during the β decay of fission products. These antineutrinos are used to inspect fundamental properties of leptons as well as informing reactor operation. However, the majority of data on complex decays of fission products collected in the evaluated nuclear data repositories like Evaluated Nuclear Structure Data File (ENSDF) and Evaluated Nuclear Data Files (ENDF) are based on low-efficiency and often incomplete measurements resulting in questionable reference reactor antineutrino flux predictions, see the analysis by [Nichols, J. Nucl. Sci. Technol. 52, 17 (2015)]. Various assessments like the one done under the auspices of the [Yoshida et al., Assessment of Fission Product Decay Data for Decay Heat Calculations: A report by the Working Party on International Evaluation Co-operation of the Nuclear Energy Agency Nuclear Science Committee (Nuclear Energy Agency, Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development, Paris, France, 2007), Vol. 25], as well as by [Sonzogni, Johnson, and McCutchan, Phys. Rev. C 91, 011301(R) (2015)] and [Dwyer and Langford, Phys. Rev. Lett. 114, 012502 (2015)], list the A = 142 isobars with high cumulative fission yield among the important nuclei where data for reactor decay heat and/or antineutrino production should be verified and/or improved. Purpose: Here, our goal is to improve the quality of β -decay measurements and evaluate the impact of modified decay schemes on reactor decay heat and antineutrino energy spectra, for fission products along the A = 142 isobaric chain. This work is an in depth follow-up on [Rasco et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 117, 092501 (2016)]. which presented briefly the impact of the corrected decay scheme of 142 Cs . Here, we extend the data to full isobaric decay chain including the daughter nuclei, 142 Ba and 142 La, and present more details on the 142 Cs results. Method: The decays of neutron-rich isobars of mass A = 142 produced by means of proton-induced fission of 238 U were measured using the Modular Total Absorption Spectrometer (MTAS) array on-line at the mass separator and Tandem accelerator at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Results: The β -decay schemes for 142 Cs and 142 La were modified with respect to the nuclear data repositories. A small β-delayed neutron branching ratio for 142 Cs emitter was remeasured as $0.10^{+5}_{–3}% %. Improved precision on the measured half-lives is reported. Small corrections to the low-energy decay of 142 Ba are made. The β-decay patterns for 142 La and 142 Cs are presented. The decay heat release and cross section for the detection of reactor antineutrinos are deduced and compared to earlier results. Conclusions: The β-feeding pattern for 142 Cs having decay energy value $Q_β$ of over 7 MeV was substantially modified with respect to the current ENSDF entry. Smaller changes were encountered for 142 La, but since this A = 142 isobar also has a large cumulative yield in fission, the changes influence both decay heat and the antineutrino spectra. The previously known β intensities for 142 Ba decay ($Q_β$ value of 2.2 MeV) were verified and slightly modified. Overall, increased decay heat values and lower flux of antineutrinos interacting with matter are presented.

Emergence of Spinons in Layered Trimer Iridate Ba 4 Ir 3 O 10

Spinons are well-known as the elementary excitations of one-dimensional antiferromagnetic chains, but means to realize spinons in higher dimensions is the subject of intense research. Here, we use resonant x-ray scattering to study the layered trimer iridate Ba 4 Ir 3 O 10 , which shows no magnetic order down to 0.2 K. An emergent one-dimensional spinon continuum is observed that can be well-described by XXZ spin-1/2 chains with magnetic exchange of ~55 meV and a small Ising-like anisotropy. With 2% isovalent Sr doping, magnetic order appears below TN=130 K along with sharper excitations, indicating that the spinons become more confined in (Ba 1-x Sr x ) 4 Ir 3 O 10 . We propose that the frustrated intra-trimer interactions effectively reduce the system into decoupled spin chains, the subtle balance of which can be easily tipped by perturbations such as chemical doping. Our results put Ba 4 Ir 3 O 10 between the one-dimensional chain and two-dimensional quantum spin liquid scenarios, illustrating a new way to suppress magnetic order and realize fractional spinons.

Complex magnetic structure in Ba 5 Ru 3 O 12 with isolated Ru 3 O 12 trimer

We report detailed magnetic, transport, heat-capacity, and neutron diffraction measurements of Ba 5 Ru 3 O 12 , a compound consisting of isolated Ru 3 O 12 trimers. We show that this system develops long-range antiferromagnetic ordering at T N ~ 60 K without structural distortion or metal-insulator-type transition, which is in sharp contrast to other Barium Ruthenate trimer systems such as 9R-BaRuO 3 and Ba 4 Ru 3 O 10 . A complex magnetic structure is revealed which is attributable to the magnetic frustration due to competing exchange interactions between Ru ions on different crystallographic sites within the Ru 3 O 12 trimer and different degree of orbital hybridization on different Ru-sites. In conclusion, we have also investigated the magnetic structure of Ba 4 Ru 3 O 10 for comparisons.

Spin-orbit coupling controlled ground states in the double perovskite iridates $\textit{A}_2\textit{B}$IrO$_6$ ($\textit{A}$ = Ba, Sr; $\textit{B}$ = Lu, Sc)

Iridates with the 5$d^4$ electronic configuration have attracted recent interest due to reports of magnetically ordered ground states despite longstanding expectations that their strong spin-orbit coupling would generate a $\textit{J}$ = 0 electronic ground state for each Ir 5+ ion. The major focus of prior research has been on the double perovskite iridates Ba 2 YIrO 6 and Sr 2 YIrO 6 , where the nature of the ground states (i.e., ordered vs nonmagnetic) is still controversial. Here, in this work, we present neutron powder diffraction, high-energy-resolution fluorescence-detected x-ray absorption spectroscopy (HERFD-XAS), resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS), magnetic susceptibility, and muon spin relaxation data on the related double perovskite iridates Ba 2 LuIrO 6 , Sr 2 LuIrO 6 , Ba 2 ScIrO 6 , and Sr 2 ScIrO 6 that enable us to gain a general understanding of the electronic and magnetic properties for this family of materials. Our HERFD-XAS and RIXS measurements establish $\textit{J}$ = 0 electronic ground states for the Ir 5+ ions in all cases, with similar values for Hund's coupling $J_H$ and the spin-orbit coupling constant $λ_{\text{SOC}}$. Our bulk susceptibility and muon spin relaxation data find no evidence for long-range magnetic order or spin freezing, but they do exhibit weak magnetic signals that are consistent with extrinsic local moments. Our results indicate that the large $λ_{\text{SOC}}$ is the key driving force behind the electronic and magnetic ground states realized in the $5d^4$ double perovskite iridates, which agrees well with conventional wisdom.

Advances in heavy alkaline earth chemistry provide insight into complexation of weakly polarizing Ra 2+ , Ba 2+ , and Sr 2+ cations

Numerous technologies—with catalytic, therapeutic, and diagnostic applications—would benefit from improved chelation strategies for heavy alkaline earth elements: Ra 2+ , Ba 2+ , and Sr 2+ . Unfortunately, chelating these metals is challenging because of their large size and weak polarizing power. We found 18-crown-6-tetracarboxylic acid (H 4 COCO) bound Ra 2+ , Ba 2+ , and Sr 2+ to form M(H x COCO) x–2 . Upon isolating radioactive 223 Ra from its parent radionuclides ( 227 Ac and 227 Th), 223 Ra 2+ reacted with the fully deprotonated COCO 4- chelator to generate Ra(COCO) 2- (aq) (log K Ra(COCO)2- = 5.97 ± 0.01), a rare example of a molecular radium complex. Comparative analyses with Sr 2+ and Ba 2+ congeners informed on what attributes engendered success in heavy alkaline earth complexation. Chelators with high negative charge [-4 for Ra(COCO) 2- (aq) ] and many donor atoms [≥11 in Ra(COCO) 2- (aq) ] provided a framework for stable complex formation. These conditions achieved steric saturation and overcame the weak polarization powers associated with these large dicationic metals.

Flexible Magnetic Polymer Composite Substrate with Ba 1.5 Sr 1.5 Z Hexaferrite Particles of VHF/Low UHF Patch Antennas for UAVs and Medical Implant Devices

Our goal is to fabricate flexible magnetic polymer composites as antenna substrates for very high frequency (VHF)/low ultra high frequency (UHF) antennas for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and medical devices. Magnetodielectric materials, which have permeability (μ) similar to permittivity (ε), have attracted great attention, because they facilitate miniaturization of microwave devices while keeping or enhancing electromagnetic characteristics. Mechanically millled Ba 1.5 Sr 1.5 Co 2 Fe 24 O 41 (Ba 1.5 Sr 1.5 Z) hexaferrite particles were used to increase permeability in the interesting frequency band. The microwave properties of Ba 1.5 Sr 1.5 Z composites were predicted and measured. Hansen’s zero-order analysis of antenna bandwidth and electromagnetic field simulation showed that the hexaferrite-based flexible composite could enhance a bandwidth and achieve the miniaturization of antennas as well. The magnetic antenna substrates can be a good solution to integrate antennas into the UAVs whose dimensions are comparable to or larger than communication wavelength.

Resonance lines of Cs II, Ba III, and La IV

The resonance line spectra of ions in the Xe I isoelectronic sequence, consisting of the five transitions to the 5p6 150 ground state from levels with J = 1 in the 5p5 5d and 6s configurations, have been observed for Cs II, Ba III, and La IV. The observations were made with a sliding spark on the 10.7-m normal-incidence vacuum spectrograph at NBS. The resonance transitions from the 5p5 6d and 7s configurations were also observed for these ions, except for that from 5p5 6d 3P1 of Ba III. Several resonance transitions from higher nd and ns levels were also observed. Estimated values for the J = 1 levels of the 5p5 7s configuration of Ce V were obtained by extrapolation. The derived ionization energies in eV are Cs II 23.17(4), Ba III 35.79(6), La IV 45.95(6), Ce V 65.55(25).

Characterization of ZrO2 buffer layers for sequentially evaporated Y-Ba-CuO on Si and Al2O3 substrates

Thin film high temperature superconductors have the potential to change the microwave technology for space communications systems. For such applications it is desirable that the films be formed on substrates such as Al2O3 which have good microwave properties. The use of ZrO2 buffer layers between Y-Ba-Cu-O and the substrate has been investigated. These superconducting films have been formed by multilayer sequential electron beam evaporation of Cu, BaF2 and Y with subsequent annealing. The three layer sequence of Y/BaF2/Cu is repeated four times for a total of twelve layers. Such a multilayer film, approximately 1 micron thick, deposited directly on SrTiO3 and annealed at 900 C for 45 min produces a film with a superconducting onset of 93 K and critical temperature of 85 K. Auger electron spectroscopy in conjunction with argon ion sputtering was used to obtain the distribution of each element as a function of depth for an unannealed film, the annealed film on SrTiO3 and annealed films on ZrO2 buffer layers. The individual layers were apparent. After annealing, the bulk of the film on SrTiO3 is observed to be fairly uniform while films on the substrates with buffer layers are less uniform. The Y-Ba-Cu-O/ZrO2 interface is broad with a long Ba tail into the ZrO2, suggesting interaction between the film and the buffer layer. The underlying ZrO2/Si interface is sharper. The detailed Auger results are presented and compared with samples annealed at different temperatures and durations.

Phase compatibilities of YBa2Cu3O(9-delta) type structure in quintenary systems Y-Ba-Cu-O-X (impurity)

Electrical transport properties of the oxidic high T(sub c) superconductors are significantly affected by the presence of minor amounts of various elements adventing as impurities, e.g., from the chemical environment during manufacturing. YBa2Cu3O(9-delta) is prone to an extinction of the superconductivity on (partial) substitution of all four elemental components. E.g., Pr (for Y), La (for Ba), Zn (for Cu) or peroxygroup (for O) substituents will alter some of the superconductivity preconditions, like mixed valence state in Cu3O7/O(9-delta) network or structural distortion of the network. Although various pseudoternary chemical equilibrium phase diagrams of the Y(O)-Ba(O)-Cu(O) system now are available, no consensus is generally shown, however, this is partly due to lack of compatible definitions of the equilibrium conditions. Less information is available about the phase compatibilities in the appropriate quaternary phase diagram (including oxygen) and virtually no information exists about any pentenary phase diagrams (including one impurity). Unfortunately, complexity of such systems, stemming both from number of quaternary or pentenary compounds and from visualizing the five-component phase system, limits this presentation to more or less close surroundings of the YBa2Cu3O(9-delta) type phase in appropriate pseudoquaternary or pseudopseudoternary diagrams, involving Y-Ba-Cu and O, O-CO2, alkaline metals, Mg and alkaline earths, and Sc and most of the 3-d and 4-f elements. The systems were investigated by means of x ray diffraction, neutron diffraction and chemical analytical methods on samples prepared by sol-gel technique from citrates. The superconductivity was characterized by measuring the diamagnetic susceptibility by SQUID.
