First measurement of the asymmetry and the Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn integrand from the 3 $\vec{H}$e ($\vec{γ},p$) 2 H reaction at an incident photon energy of 29 MeV

The first measurement of the 3 $\vec{H}$e ($\vec{γ},p$) 2 H process was performed at the High Intensity γ-ray Source ( HIγS ) facility at Triangle Universities Nuclear Laboratory using a circularly polarized, monoenergetic γ -ray beam and a longitudinally polarized 3 He target. The spin-dependent asymmetry and the contribution from the two-body photodisintegration to the 3 He Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn integrand are extracted and compared with state-of-the-art three-nucleon system calculations at the incident photon energy of 29 MeV. The data are in general agreement with the various theoretical predictions based on the Siegert theorem or on explicit inclusion of meson-exchange currents.

Flavor asymmetry from the nonperturbative nucleon sea

We demonstrate, in the context of a scalar version of the chiral effective-field theory, that the multisea quark contribution to the nucleon is significant and highly nontrivial, in sharp contrast with the prediction of perturbation theory. The nonperturbative calculation is performed in the Fock sector dependent renormalization scheme on the light front, in which the nonperturbative renormalization is incorporated. The calculation suggests that a fully nonperturbative calculation of the chiral EFT is needed to obtain a robust result to be compared with the recent experimental measurement of flavor asymmetry in the proton. Impact of the chiral asymmetry and a magnetic field on the passage of an energetic test parton in a QCD medium

We study the dependence of soft contribution to the energy loss of a test parton moving with a high velocity on the chiral imbalance and magnetic field in the QCD medium. A semiclassical approach is adopted to estimate the parton energy loss that takes into account the back-reaction on the parton due to the polarization effects of the QCD medium while traversing through the medium. We find that the motion of the parton is sensitive to the chiral asymmetry in the medium. Further, we investigate the effect of magnetic field-induced anisotropy on the energy transfer between the moving parton and the medium. Our results show that the energy loss of the parton is strongly influenced by the strength of the magnetic field as well as the relative orientation of the motion of the parton and the direction of the magnetic field in the medium.

Impact of high invariant-mass Drell-Yan forward-backward asymmetry measurements on SMEFT fits

We study the impact of LHC forward-backward asymmetry (AFB) measurements at high invariant mass in the Drell-Yan process on probes of semileptonic four-fermion operators in the Standard Model effective field theory (SMEFT). In particular, we study whether AFB measurements can resolve degeneracies in the Wilson coefficient parameter space that appear when considering invariant-mass and rapidity measurements alone. We perform detailed fits of the available high-energy and high-luminosity ATLAS and CMS data for both invariant-mass distributions and AFB. While each type of measurement separately exhibits degeneracies, combining them removes these blind spots in some cases. In other situations, it does not, highlighting the importance of incorporating future datasets from other experiments to fully explore this sector of the SMEFT. We investigate the impact of contributions quadratic in the Wilson coefficients on the description of Drell-Yan data and discuss when such terms are important in joint fits of the AFB and invariant-mass data.

Measurement of C P asymmetries in B 0 → K S 0 K S 0 K S 0 decays at Belle II

We report a measurement of decay-time-dependent charge-parity ( C P ) asymmetries in B 0 → K S 0 K S 0 K S 0 decays. We use 387 × 10 6 B B ¯ pairs collected at the ϒ ( 4 S ) resonance with the Belle II detector at the SuperKEKB asymmetric-energy electron-positron collider. We reconstruct 220 signal events and extract the C P -violating parameters S and C from a fit to the distribution of the decay-time difference between the two B mesons. The resulting confidence region is consistent with previous measurements in B 0 → K S 0 K S 0 K S 0 and B 0 → ( c c ¯ ) K 0 decays and with predictions based on the standard model. Transverse spin asymmetries and the electron Yukawa coupling at an FCC-ee

We show that measurements of single transverse-spin asymmetries at an 𝑒 + ⁢𝑒 − collider can enhance the sensitivity to the electron Yukawa coupling, possibly enabling observation of the Standard Model value for this quantity. We demonstrate that the significance in both the 𝑏⁢$\overline{𝑏}$ and semileptonic 𝑊⁢𝑊 final states can be enhanced by factors of up to 3 compared to inclusive cross-section determinations of this coupling for transversely polarized electrons. If the positrons can be simultaneously longitudinally polarized, even at the level of 30%, the significance can be enhanced by a factor of 5 or more. The method utilizes quantum interference between the Higgs signal and the continuum background and is also applicable in other 𝑊⁢𝑊 and 𝑍⁢𝑍 final states.

Extraction of Beam-Spin Asymmetries from the Hard Exclusive π + Channel off Protons in a Wide Range of Kinematics

We have measured beam-spin asymmetries to extract the $\sin\phi$ moment $A_{LU}^{\sin\phi}$ from the hard exclusive $\vec{e} p \to e^\prime n \pi^+$ reaction above the resonance region, for the first time with nearly full coverage from forward to backward angles in the center-of-mass. The $A_{LU}^{\sin\phi}$ moment has been measured up to 6.6 GeV$^{2}$ in $-t$, covering the kinematic regimes of Generalized Parton Distributions (GPD) and baryon-to-meson Transition Distribution Amplitudes (TDA) at the same time. The experimental results in very forward kinematics demonstrate the sensitivity to chiral-odd and chiral-even GPDs. In very backward kinematics where the TDA framework is applicable, we found $A_{LU}^{\sin\phi}$ to be negative, while a sign change was observed near 90$^\circ$ in the center-of-mass. The unique results presented in this paper will provide critical constraints to establish reaction mechanisms that can help to further develop the GPD and TDA frameworks.

Information Content of the Parity-Violating Asymmetry in Pb 208

The parity-violating asymmetry A PV in 208 Pb, recently measured by the PREX-2 Collaboration, is studied using modern relativistic (covariant) and nonrelativistic energy density functionals. We first assess the theoretical uncertainty on A PV which is intrinsic to the adopted approach. To this end, we use quantified functionals that are able to accommodate our previous knowledge on nuclear observables such as binding energies, charge radii, and the dipole polarizability α D of 208 Pb. We then add the quantified value of A PV together with α D to our calibration dataset to optimize new functionals. Based on these results, we predict a neutron skin thickness in 208 Pb r skin = 0.19 ± 0.02 fm and the symmetry-energy slope L = 54 ± 8 MeV. These values are consistent with other estimates based on astrophysical data and are significantly lower than those recently reported using a particular set of relativistic energy density functionals. Here, we also make a prediction for the A PV value in 48 Ca that will be soon available from the CREX measurement.

New Measurements of the Beam-Normal Single Spin Asymmetry in Elastic Electron Scattering Over a Range of Spin-0 Nuclei

We report precision determinations of the beam-normal single spin asymmetries (A n ) in the elastic scattering of 0.95 and 2.18 GeV electrons off 12 C, 40 Ca, 48 Ca, and 208 Pb at very forward angles where the most detailed theoretical calculations have been performed. The first measurements of A n for 40 Ca and 48 Ca are found to be similar to that of 12 C, consistent with expectations and thus demonstrating the validity of theoretical calculations for nuclei with Z ≤ 20. We also report A n for 208 Pb at two new momentum transfers (Q 2 ) extending the previous measurement. Our new data confirm the surprising result previously reported, with all three data points showing significant disagreement with the results from the Z ≤ 20 nuclei. These data confirm our basic understanding of the underlying dynamics that govern A n for nuclei containing ≲ 50 nucleons, but point to the need for further investigation to understand the unusual A n behavior discovered for scattering off 208 Pb.

Combined Theoretical Analysis of the Parity-Violating Asymmetry for 48 Ca and 208 Pb

The recent experimental determination of the parity violating asymmetry A PV in 48 Ca and 208 Pb at Jefferson Lab is important for our understanding on how neutrons and protons arrange themselves inside the atomic nucleus. To better understand the impact of these measurements, we present a rigorous theoretical investigation of A PV in 48 Ca and 208 Pb and assess the associated uncertainties. Here, we complement our study by inspecting the static electric dipole polarizability in these nuclei. The analysis is carried out within nuclear energy density functional theory with quantified input. We conclude that the simultaneous accurate description of A PV in 48 Ca and 208 Pb cannot be achieved by our models that accommodate a pool of global nuclear properties, such as masses and charge radii, throughout the nuclear chart, and describe—within one standard deviation—the experimental dipole polarizabilities in these nuclei.

First Evidence of Axial Shape Asymmetry and Configuration Coexistence in Zn 74 : Suggestion for a Northern Extension of the N = 40 Island of Inversion

The excited states of N=44 74 Zn were investigated via γ-ray spectroscopy following 74 Cu β decay. By exploiting γ-γ angular correlation analysis, the 2$_2^+$, 3$_1^+$, 0$_2^+$, and 2$_3^+$ states in 74 Zn were firmly established. The γ-ray branching and E2/M1 mixing ratios for transitions deexciting the 2$_2^+$, 3$_1^+$, and 2$_3^+$ states were measured, allowing for the extraction of relative B(E2) values. In particular, the 2$_3^+$→0$_2^+$ and 2$_3^+$→4$_1^+$ transitions were observed for the first time. Here the results show excellent agreement with new microscopic large-scale shell-model calculations, and are discussed in terms of underlying shapes, as well as the role of neutron excitations across the N=40 gap. Enhanced axial shape asymmetry (triaxiality) is suggested to characterize 74 Zn in its ground state. Furthermore, an excited K=0 band with a significantly larger softness in its shape is identified. A shore of the N=40 "island of inversion" appears to manifest above Z=26, previously thought as its northern limit in the chart of the nuclides.

First Measurement of the Decay Asymmetry in the Pure W -Boson-Exchange Decay Λ c + → Ξ 0 K +

Based on 4.4 fb − 1 of e + e − annihilation data collected at the center-of-mass energies between 4.60 and 4.70 GeV with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider, the pure W -boson-exchange decay Λ c + → Ξ 0 K + is studied with a full angular analysis. The corresponding decay asymmetry is measured for the first time to be α Ξ 0 K + = 0.01 ± 0.16 ( stat ) ± 0.03 ( syst ) . This result reflects the noninterference effect between the S - and P -wave amplitudes. The phase shift between S - and P -wave amplitudes has two solutions, which are δ p − δ s = − 1.55 ± 0.25 ( stat ) ± 0.05 ( syst ) rad or 1.59 ± 0.25 ( stat ) ± 0.05 ( syst ) rad . Measurements of the Branching Fraction, Polarization, and C P Asymmetry for the Decay B 0 → ω ω

We present a comprehensive study of B 0 → ω ω decays using 772 × 10 6 B B ¯ pairs collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB e + e − collider. This process is a suppressed charmless decay into two vector mesons and can exhibit interesting polarization and C P violation. The decay is observed for the first time with a significance of 7.9 standard deviations. We measure a branching fraction B = ( 1.53 ± 0.29 ± 0.17 ) × 10 − 6 , a fraction of longitudinal polarization f L = 0.87 ± 0.13 ± 0.13 , and a time-integrated C P asymmetry A C P = − 0.44 ± 0.43 ± 0.11 , where the first uncertainties listed are statistical and the second are systematic. This is the first observation of B 0 → ω ω and the first measurements of f L and A C P for this decay. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Precision measurement of the longitudinal double-spin asymmetry for dijet production at intermediate pseudorapidity in polarized 𝑝⁢𝑝 collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 200 GeV

The STAR Collaboration reports precise measurements of the longitudinal double-spin asymmetry, 𝐴 𝐿⁢𝐿 , for dijet production with at least one jet at intermediate pseudorapidity 0.8 < 𝜂 jet < 1.8 in polarized proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 200 GeV. This study explores partons scattered with a longitudinal momentum fraction (𝑥) from 0.01 to 0.5, which are predominantly characterized by interactions between high-𝑥 valence quarks and low-𝑥 gluons. The results are in good agreement with previous measurements at 200 GeV with improved precision and are found to be consistent with the predictions of global analyses that find the gluon polarization to be positive. In contrast, the negative gluon polarization solution from the JAM Collaboration is found to be strongly disfavored.

Open charm production and asymmetry in p Ne collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\scriptscriptstyle {\textrm{NN}}}}$ = 68.5 GeV

A measurement of D 0 meson production by the LHCb experiment in its fixed-target configuration is presented. The production of D 0 mesons is studied with a beam of 2.5 TeV protons colliding on a gaseous neon target at rest, corresponding to a nucleon–nucleon centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 68.5 GeV. The sum of the D 0 and $\overline{D}$ 0 production cross-section in pNe collisions in the centre-of-mass rapidity range y* ϵ [-2.29,0] is found to be $σ^{y* ϵ [-2.29,0]}_{D^0}$ = 48.2 ± 0.3 ± 4.5 μb/nucleon where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. The D 0 and $\overline{D}$ 0 production asymmetry is also evaluated and suggests a trend towards negative values at large negative y*. The considered models do not account precisely for all the features observed in the LHCb data, but theoretical predictions including 1% intrinsic charm and 10% recombination contributions better describe the data than the other models considered.

Sweep-tracing algorithm: in silico slip crystallography and tension-compression asymmetry in BCC metals

Abstract Direct Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulations are being increasingly employed to model dislocation-mediated crystal plasticity with atomic resolution. Thanks to the dislocation extraction algorithm (DXA), dislocation lines can be now accurately detected and positioned in space and their Burgers vector unambiguously identified in silico, while the simulation is being performed. However, DXA extracts static snapshots of dislocation configurations that by themselves present no information on dislocation motion. Referred to as a sweep-tracing algorithm (STA), here we introduce a practical computational method to observe dislocation motion and to accurately quantify its important characteristics such as preferential slip planes (slip crystallography). STA reconnects pairs of successive snapshots extracted by DXA and computes elementary slip facets thus precisely tracing the motion of dislocation segments from one snapshot to the next. As a testbed for our new method, we apply STA to the analysis of dislocation motion in large-scale MD simulations of single crystal plasticity in BCC metals. We observe that, when the crystal is subjected to uniaxial deformation along its [001] axis, dislocation slip predominantly occurs on the {112} maximum resolved shear stress plane under tension, while in compression slip is non-crystallographic (pencil) resulting in asymmetric mechanical response. The marked contrast in the observed slip crystallography is attributed to the twinning/anti-twinning asymmetry of shears in the {112} planes relatively favoring dislocation motion in the twinning sense while hindering dislocations from moving in the anti-twinning directions.

Polarization-independent photonic Bragg grating filter with cladding asymmetry

A photonic Bragg grating is a fundamental building block that reflects the direction of wave propagation through spatial phase modulation and can be implemented using sidewall corrugation. However, due to the asymmetric aspect ratio of a waveguide cross section, typical Bragg gratings exhibit a strong polarization sensitivity. Here, we show that photonic Bragg gratings with cladding asymmetry can enable polarization-independent notch filters by rotating input polarizations. Such Bragg gratings strongly couple transverse electric (TE) and transverse magnetic (TM) modes propagating in opposite directions, filtering the input signal and reflecting the rotated mode. We analyzed this polarization-rotating Bragg grating using the coupled-mode theory and experimentally demonstrated it on a silicon-on-insulator platform. Our device concept is simple to implement and compatible with other platforms, readily available as polarization transparent Bragg components.

The forward-backward asymmetry and differences of partial moments in inclusive semileptonic $B$ decays

Global fits to moments of kinematic distributions measured in inclusive semileptonic B\rightarrow X_c l \nu_l B → X c l ν l enable the determination of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element \left|V_{cb}\right| | V c b | together with non-perturbative matrix elements of the heavy quark expansion. In current fits, only two distinct kinematic distributions are employed and, as a consequence, higher moments of these distributions need to be taken into account to extract the relevant non-perturbative matrix elements. The moments of a given distribution are highly correlated and experimental uncertainties increase for higher moments. To address these issues, Turczyk suggested the inclusion of the charged lepton forward-backward asymmetry \mathcal{A}_{FB} 𝒜 F B in global fits, since it provides information on non-perturbative parameters beyond the commonly used moments. It is possible to construct differences of partial moments of kinematic distributions, which can provide additional information on the non-perturbative parameters beyond \mathcal{A}_{FB} 𝒜 F B and are studied in this work for the first time. Further, experimental cuts on the four-momentum transfer square are studied and are shown to preserve the shape of the angular distribution, in contrast to commonly used cuts on the lepton energy. Finally, the impact of final-state radiation and experimental lepton identification requirements on measurements of \mathcal{A}_{FB} 𝒜 F B and differences of partial moments are discussed.
