Colorimetric consideration of transparencies for a typical LACIE scene

The production film converter used to produce LACIE imagery is described as well as schemes designed to provide the analyst with operational film products. Two of these products are discussed from the standpoint of color theory. Colorimetric terminology is defined and the mathematical calculations are given. Topics covered include (1) history of product 1 and 3 algorithm development; (2) colorimetric assumptions for product 1 and 3 algorithms; (3) qualitative results from a colorimetric analysis of a typical LACIE scene; and (4) image-to-image color stability.

The reverse laser drilling of transparent materials

Within a limited range of incident laser-beam intensities, laser drilling of a sapphire wafer initiates on the surface of the wafer where the laser beam exits and proceeds upstream in the laser beam to the surface where the laser beam enters the wafer. This reverse laser drilling is the result of the constructive interference between the laser beam and its reflected component on the exit face of the wafer. Constructive interference occurs only at the exit face of the sapphire wafer because the internally reflected laser beam suffers no phase change there. A model describing reverse laser drilling predicts the ranges of incident laser-beam intensity where no drilling, reverse laser drilling, and forward laser drilling can be expected in various materials. The application of reverse laser drilling in fabricating feed-through conductors in silicon-on-sapphire wafers for a massively parallel processer is described.

The stability of new transparent polymeric materials: The epoxy trimethoxyboroxine system. Part 1: The preparation, characterization and curing of epoxy resins and their copolymers

The effects of resin composition, curing conditions fillers, and flame retardant additives on the flammability of diglycidyl ether of bisphenol-A (DGEBA) as measured by the oxygen index is examined. The oxygen index of DGEBA cured with various curing agents was between 0.198 to 0.238. Fillers and flame retardant additives can increase the oxygen index dependent on the material and the amount used. Changes in the basic cured resin properties can be anticipated with the addition of noncompatible additives. High flame resistant epoxy resins with good stability and mechanical properties are investigated.

Holographic interferometry of transparent media with reflection from imbedded test objects

In applying holographic interferometry, opaque objects blocking a portion of the optical beam used to form the interferogram give rise to incomplete data for standard computer tomography algorithms. An experimental technique for circumventing the problem of data blocked by opaque objects is presented. The missing data are completed by forming an interferogram using light backscattered from the opaque object, which is assumed to be diffuse. The problem of fringe localization is considered.

Determination of semi-transparent cirrus cloud temperature from infrared radiances - Application to Meteosat

A bispectral technique was employed to determine the cirrus cloud-top temperature. Data were gathered from aircraft equipped with the ARIES radiometer, which on sixteen flights provided IR readings at 6.5 and 11.5 microns of cirrus tops. The flights were made on a NASA Convair to a maximum ceiling of 12,500 m. The brightness temperatures above the cirrus were found to be consistently colder, by up to 40 K, than the 11.5 microns window channel, and good spatial correlations were displayed over whole clouds. Effective emissivities are calculated for both channels and applied to Meteosat digital imagery. The subsequent derived temperatures were significantly colder than black-body temperatures, which is explained by taking into account the absorption of emitted radiation by water vapor.

Heat transparent high intensity high efficiency solar cell

An improved solar cell design is described. A surface of each solar cell has a plurality of grooves. Each groove has a vertical face and a slanted face that is covered by a reflecting metal. Light rays are reflected from the slanted face through the vertical face where they traverse a photovoltaic junction. As the light rays travel to the slanted face of an adjacent groove, they again traverse the junction. The underside of the reflecting coating directs the light rays toward the opposite surface of solar cell as they traverse the junction again. When the light rays travel through the solar cell and reach the saw toothed grooves on the under side, the process of reflection and repeatedly traversing the junction again takes place. The light rays ultimately emerge from the solar cell. These solar cells are particularly useful at very high levels of insolation because the infrared or heat radiation passes through the cells without being appreciably absorbed to heat the cell.

Apparatus and method for heating a material in a transparent ampoule

An improved process for heating a material within a fused silica ampoule by radiation through the wall of the ampoule, while simultaneously passing a cooling gas around the ampoule is described. The radiation passes through a screen of fused silica so as to remove those components capable of directly heating the silica, therby increasing the temperature of the material within the ampoule above the strain point of the ampoule, while maintaining the exterior of the ampoule cool enough to prevent rupturing the amp.

Photochemical stability of UV-screening transparent acrylic copolymers of 2-(2-hydroxy-5-vinylphenyl)-2H-benzotriazole

The mechanism of photodegradation of certain hydroxyphenyl benzotriazole based ultraviolet absorbers has been investigated and a new polymerizable ultraviolet absorber in this group has been synthesized. The photoreactivity is entirely confined at the surface of polymethylmethacrylate films containing the ultraviolet absorbers as pendant groups. A mechanism involving sensitized photooxidation has been proposed to interpret the data.

Effect of hard particle impacts on the atomic oxygen survivability of reflector surfaces with transparent protective overcoats

Silver mirror samples with protective coatings were subjected to a stream of 27 microns alumina particles to induce pinhole defects. The protective coating consisted of a layer of aluminum dioxide over silver followed by a layer of silicon dioxide over the alumina. Samples were prepared on both graphite-epoxy composite and fused quartz substrates. After exposure to the hard particle stream, the samples were exposed to an oxygen plasma environment in a laboratory plasma asher. The effects of both the hard particles and the oxygen plasma were documented by both reflectance measurements and scanning electron microscopy. The results indicated that oxidative damage to the silver reflecting layer continues beyond that of the erosively exposed silver. Oxidative undercutting of the silver layer and graphite-epoxy substrate continues in undamaged areas through adjacent, particle damaged defect sites. This may have implications for the use of such mirrors in a space station solar dynamic power system.

Cellular solidification of transparent monotectics

Understanding how liquid phase particles are engulfed or pushed during freezing of a monotectic is addressed. The additional complication is that the solid-liquid interface is nonplanar due to constitutional undercooling. Some evidence of particle pushing where the particles are the liquid phase of the montectic was already observed. Cellular freezing of the succinonitrile-glycerol system also occurred. Only a few compositions were tested at that time. The starting materials were not especially pure so that cellular interface observed was likely due to the presence of unkown impurities, the major portion of which was water. Topics addressed include: the effort of modeling the particle pushing process using the computer, establishing an apparatus for the determination of phase diagrams, and the measurement of the temperature gradients with a specimen which will solidify on the temperature gradient microscope stage.

Procedure to prepare transparent silica gels

This invention relates to the production of silica gels and in particular to a process for the preparation of silica gels which can be used as a crystal growth medium that simulates the convectionless environment of space to produce structurally perfect crystals. Modern utilizations of substances in electronics, such as radio transmitters and high frequency microphones, often require single crystals with controlled purity and structural perfection. The near convectionless environment of silica gel suppresses nucleation, thereby reducing the competitive nature of crystal growth. This competition limits the size and perfection of the crystal; and it is obviously desirable to suppress nucleation until, ideally, only one crystal grows in a predetermined location. A silica gel is not a completely convectionless environment like outer space, but is the closest known environment to that of outer space that can be created on Earth.

Crystallization microstructure in transparent monotectic alloys

The surprising funguslike morphology which occurs at the liquid(1)/liquid(2)/solid triple junction in directionally solidifying miscibility gap systems at the monotectic temperature is described. The monotectic temperature in a binary mixture is the one at which two immiscible solutions of the same two components form phases in equilibrium with the solid phase of one of the components. The growth of this morphology is described, and a similarity between it and that of a known crystal growth morphology is pointed out.
