A 294 GHz 0.47m W Caterpillar amplifier based transmitter in 65 nm CMOS for THz data-links

A fully integrated CMOS THz transmitter for short range data-links is presented which provides 0.47 mW of output power to 294 GHz. The output frequency is derived from a 147 GHz on-chip LO and fully differential caterpillar power amplifier combined with a transformer coupled frequency doubler. The transmitter is integrated with an on-chip dipole antenna for use in THz communication systems and consumes a total of 258 mW.

A 5.8 GHz 1.77mW AFSK-OFDM CMOS Backscatter Transmitter for Low Power Internet of Things Applications

This paper presents an AFSK-OFDM (amplitude frequency shift keying-orthogonal frequency division multiplexing) based backscatter transmitter for Internet-of-Things (IoT) applications. The transmitter uses an array of 4 low-power direct digital frequency synthesizers (DDFSs) and DACs to transmit data using both frequency and amplitude symbols on 4 different OFDM subcarriers. The backscatter modulator is demonstrated within a 5.8 GHz wireless link using an 8-symbol OFDM library at a range of 2.7m and shown to consume 1.77 mW when operated at a symbol rate of 4MS/s (corresponds to 12 Mb/s). The modulator chip occupies 0.45mm² of silicon area.

Launch Vehicle and Spacecraft Transmitter Electromagnetic Compatibility

The Launch Services Program at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center (KSC) is the primary gate for acquiring commercial vehicles to provide a cost effective ride to space for NASA spacecraft. With the lunar Gateway, more human tended elements are planned for launch. One challenge facing the space industry is the proliferation of communication and science transmitters at frequencies beyond the qualification of space avionics and instruments. Studies have ensued to examine the intricacies of performing radiated susceptibility testing and analysis above 18 GHz. Changes in the launch vehicle communications interface to the range have also lead to new launch vehicle antenna systems and more reliance on GPS and telemetry systems. Finally, research initiated at KSC in the area of predicted electric field distributions in launch vehicle payload fairings have spawned Small Business Technology Transfer initiatives for industry to investigate statistical algorithm and computational improvements in large payload fairing modeling of transmitters at frequencies in the GHz range. These topics, along with electromagnetic compatibility testing for launch vehicles will be discussed.

Mission Status, On-Orbit Performance, and Lessons Learned of the Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation (GEDI) Lidar Laser Transmitters

The Global Ecosystems Dynamics Investigation (GEDI) Lidar, is a global 3-dimensional biomass lidar instrument aboard the International Space Station (ISS) and the Japanese Experiment Module (JEM). Its core mission is to measure the global carbon balance of Earth’s forests with 3 laser transmitters using multi-beam waveform-capture methods. GEDI’s laser transmitter concept was originally funded by NASA Goddard’s Earth Science Technology Office (ESTO) for future Earth Altimetry and Lidar missions ~ 20 years ago, and after a long road of development, the first flight-ready unit was a 10 mJ-class system for GEDI’s ISS-based specifications. Furthermore, no adjustment in drive parameters has been required nor significant decay detected after 4 years of near continuous operation of 3 on-board lasers, which were designed for a 2-year mission. We report on the GEDI laser design process, their on-orbit performance, the major lessons learned, and some critical insight into our in-house flight quality development process that enabled their delivery within budget, schedule, and low risk extended mission life capability.

Dual-frequency mode transmitter for wireless power transfer

A transmitter for wireless power transfer is provided. The transmitter includes an input port, a first transmission port, a second transmission port, an inverter, and a controller. An input of the inverter is coupled to the input port, and an output of the inverter is coupled in parallel to the first and second transmission ports. The controller is programmed to control the inverter to modulate an output voltage at the output of the inverter such that power from the input port is transmitted at a first frequency through the first transmission port and at a second frequency through the second transmission port.

Single-stage transmitter for wireless power transfer

A single-stage transmitter for wireless power transfer is provided. The transmitter includes a rectifier stage and an inverter stage sharing a first phase leg. The rectifier stage further includes a rectifying leg including two diodes connected in series, and a boost inductor coupling the first phase leg and the rectifying leg to an input port. The inverter stage further includes a second phase leg. Each phase leg includes two switches connected in series. The first and second phase legs are coupled to an output port. A bus capacitor is coupled across the first phase, second phase, and rectifying legs. A controller is programmed to determine first and second parameters, based on an output power at the output port, to simultaneously control the rectifier stage and the inverter stage to maintain constant bus voltage and achieve high power factor and low total harmonic distortion at the input port.

An Acoustic Transmitter with Intelligent ON/OFF Mechanisms and Quasi-location Awareness

We successfully demonstrated an acoustic transmitter with intelligent ON/OFF mechanisms and quasi-location awareness. The prototype transmitter has (1) the ability (radio frequency-enabled ON/OFF) to turn the tag on and off when it passes through a passive integrated transponder antenna and (2) the ability to detect significant salinity changes (i.e. from freshwater to sea water and vice versa) and turn itself off and on, respectively. Such a device would greatly enhance the capabilities of the acoustic telemetry-based fish tracking systems.

The ground transmitter and receiver

Ground station equipment for the Telstar experiment includes a 6-kmc transmitter and a 4-kmc receiver used for television and telephone channels. This paper describes the over-all transmitting and receiving arrangements and presents detailed accounts of the RF and power-supply subsystems. Information is also presented on protection, control and equipment features, and on receiver noise performance.
