SHASTA: Task 2.2: Sensor Development for Subsurface Hydrogen Storage Monitoring Technology Maturation and Commercialization Plan (TMCP)

In Task 2.2 under the SHASTA program, NETL is developing in-situ optical fiber sensors for real-time monitoring of hydrogen, methane, and chemical parameters such as pH at subsurface hydrogen storage conditions. This Technology Maturation and Commercialization Plan report will provide the summary of NETL sensor development and test results under the SHASTA program to meet the subsurface application requirements and proposed technology maturation and deployment plan, and commercialization potential.

Annual Report on NCSP Technical Support task in BNL during FY24

This work reports on the investigations done during FY 24 in collaboration with two 2024 Summer undergraduate interns through the DOE SULI and BNL SURP programs. These efforts were partially funded by the Nuclear Criticality Safety Program through the Technical Support Succession Plan task. The first project, developed by Ian Snider, focused on testing the impact of uncertainties in thermal cross sections for multiple materials in nuclear reactor simulations. The second project aimed implement concurrent into BNL’s machine-learning code to correct spin mis-assignments in neutron resonances, the Bayesian Resonance Reclassifier (BRR).

NRAP Task 5: Preliminary Evaluation of the Cost of Responding to a Hypothetical Leakage Scenario Using the NRAP/SMART TALES Model and other NRAP Tools

Emergency Management of Tomorrow Research – Task 3B Research and Development Community Awareness: Eliciting Emergency Management Stakeholder Input

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Science and Technology Directorate (S&T) is partnering with Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) to execute the Emergency Management (EM) of Tomorrow Research (EMOTR) program to identify current EM research, elicit capability needs from EM practitioners, and identify where technology, such as artificial intelligence (AI), may benefit the future of EM and emergency operations centers. This report details the methodology, analysis, and insights of interviews and focus groups conducted as part of the task to elicit stakeholder input.

MRCI Task 4: Evaluating Regional Infrastructure Technical Summary Report

The infrastructure required to enable carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) goes beyond the equipment and materials needed to capture, transport, and store carbon dioxide (CO2) but includes people and policy that make CCS feasible. The Infrastructure Assessment task of the Midwest Regional Carbon Initiative (MRCI) seeks to determine the infrastructure requirements for the MRCI study area through four activities: • Infrastructure Readiness: Strategizing the buildout of capture, transport, and storage infrastructure in the Midwest, Northeast, and Mid-Atlantic Offshore. • Site Readiness: Determining the CCS readiness of each state in the MRCI region in the categories of subsurface readiness; infrastructure readiness; regulations, permitting, and incentives; and social dynamics. • Jobs, Economics, and Social Characteristics: Quantifying the economic potential, job opportunities, and training opportunities for CCS as well as the social characteristics of the region with a focus on energy and environmental justice (EJ) issues. • Policy and Regulations: Providing an updated accounting of the CCS-relevant policy and regulations in the MRCI region.

Open-source Tip-and-Cue for Change-Detection Tasking

Currently, no tool exists to detect daily change across the globe, let alone to do so cost- and resource-efficiently. The proposed tool will use open-source data to detect change in near-real-time to identify targets of interest for tasking, providing a unique capability for constant global situational awareness.

TEAMER Technical Support of Ramboll's for Numerical Modeling of WECs to Support OES Task 10: Cooperative Research and Development (Final Report)

National Technology & Engineering Solutions of Sandia, LLC (NTESS) in collaboration with the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), and with guidance from Ramboll, will perform fluid dynamics simulations to support of The Ocean Energy Systems (OES) Energy Technology Collaboration Program Task 10 Wave Energy Converters (WEC) Modelling Verification and Validation effort. Specific numerical simulations include the fixed device wave impingement studies to benchmark the performance of simulation techniques against physical testing results.

These efforts were partially funded by the Nuclear Criticality Safety Program through the Technical Support Succession Plan task. This project, developed by Matthew Molnar, aimed to apply the BNL’s machine-learning code to correct spin mis-assignments in neutron resonances, the Bayesian Resonance Reclassifier (BRR), to the odd-even nucleus 143 Nd. For this, the handling of spingroup classification had to be further investigated and improved.

Applied Research and Development to Support Open Water Testing at PacWave – Task 5: Development of additively manufactured, functionally graded, corrosion resistant clads for wave energy applications

In this task, we focused on developing corrosion-resistant claddings for wave energy applications. Wave energy systems are exposed to saline conditions, which are corrosive to many metallic structural materials (e.g., carbon steel). Corrosion-resistant (stainless) steels are typically alloyed with >18% chromium (Cr) and >8% nickel (Ni), which dramatically raises material costs and can hinder the development of wave energy systems; thus, coatings are a necessary corrosion protection method for most. Non-metallic coatings (paint, epoxy) have shorter service lives, limited resistance to mechanical stress and wear, plus additional costs of inspection and eventual replacement. Therefore, overlay stainless steel (SS) claddings have a cost-effective use case for protecting components from corrosion, particularly for those that may be subject to mechanical stress / wear and with long service lives.

A reproducible study design for the MIMIC-IV in-hospital mortality task

Open, tabular electronic health record (EHR) datasets such as MIMIC-III and MIMIC-IV have become critical resources for developing machine learning (ML) models addressing clinical prediction tasks, including hospital readmission, length of stay, and in-hospital mortality (IHM). While MIMIC-III has benefited from well-established preprocessing pipelines and standardized feature sets, MIMIC-IV remains comparatively challenging to work with because there are no standardized benchmarks to support reproducibility and comparability across studies. To address this limitation, we present a rigorously curated MIMIC-IV custom feature set optimized for IHM prediction, constructed through a reproducible preprocessing pipeline and feature selection strategy.

User Manual - HydraGNN v5.0: Distributed Implementation of Multi-Tasking Graph Neural Networks

This document serves as the user manual for HydraGNN v5.0, a scalable graph neural network (GNN) architecture for simultaneous prediction of multiple target properties using multi-task learning (MTL). This version of HydraGNN has been developed primarily to support the development, training, and deployment of predictive graph-based deep learning (DL) models for atomistic materials modeling. HydraGNN is templated over 13 message-passing policies, including invariant models (GIN, PNA, PNAPlus, GAT, MFC, CGCNN, SAGE, SchNet, DimeNet) and equivariant models (EGNN, PNAEq, PAINN, MACE), and supports distributed training via distributed data parallelism (DDP), DeepSpeed, and Fully Sharded Data Parallelism (FSDP) on leadership-class supercomputers. Although HydraGNN can be applied to problems beyond atomistic materials modeling, its current use is confined to homogeneous graphs. Additional capabilities include machine-learned interatomic potentials with energy-conserving forces, General, Powerful, and Scalable Graph Transformer (GraphGPS) global attention, periodic boundary conditions, hyperparameter optimization, mixed-precision training, and uncertainty quantification.

ARCH Technology Snapshot Autonomous Robot Control Hierarchy (ARCH): A universal software system that removes the need to rebuild robotic software for every new platform or task

Robots are increasingly used to perform repetitive, hazardous, and time-sensitive tasks, improving safety and operational efficiency. However, most robotic systems remain difficult to adapt because they are tightly tied to specific hardware and require extensive reprogramming for each new configuration.

IEA Wind Energy Task 37 - System Engineering - Aerodynamic Optimization Case Study

This paper presents the results from the first IEA Wind Task 37 aerodynamic optimization case study. 8 participants applied their optimization tools to a purely aerodynamic problem and the results were compared. Overall, the different tools produced widely different designs, while there was better agreement in the improvement achieved. This highlights the fact that further investigation is needed to try to understand these differences and develop best practices. There were too many differences between the different analysis and optimization codes to determine the sources of these differences. However, several potential sources of discrepancy were identified for further investigation. One hypothesis is that one potential source of discrepancy is that the design problem itself is relatively flat in design directions of constant loading. This flatness would impact the convergence in the optimization, while at the same time mean that discrepancies in the design itself would be less severe.

A free association semantic task for fNIRS-based perinatal depression assessment

Perinatal depression (PD) is a highly prevalent psychological disorder that has a detrimental effect on infant and maternal physical and mental health, but effective and objective assessment of PD is still insufficient. In recent years, the functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) has been acknowledged as an effective non-invasive tool for clinical assessment of depression. This study proposed a free association semantic task (FAST) paradigm for fNIRS-based assessment of PD. To better address the emotion characteristics of PD, the participants are required to generate a dynamic concept chain based on positive, negative or neutral seed words, while 48-channel fNIRS recordings over frontal and bilateral temporal regions. Results from twenty-two late-pregnant women revealed that, the oxyhemoglobin (oxy-Hb) changes during the FAST with the positive and negative seed words over the frontal region were correlated with PD severity, which was different from the correlation patterns in the FAST with neutral seed word and the classical verbal fluency test (VFT). Furthermore, distinct correlation patterns were also observed in the FAST with the positive and negative seed words, manifested in fNIRS channels corresponding to the right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) and right inferior frontal gyrus (IFG), respectively. Moreover, regression analyses showed that the FAST with positive and negative seed words can well explain the severity of PD. Our findings suggest the proposed FAST paradigm as a promising approach for PD assessment.

Task-Specific Phosphonium Iongels by Fast UV-Photopolymerization for Solid-State Sodium Metal Batteries

Sodium metal batteries are an emerging technology that shows promise in terms of materials availability with respect to lithium batteries. Solid electrolytes are needed to tackle the safety issues related to sodium metal. In this work, a simple method to prepare a mechanically robust and efficient soft solid electrolyte for sodium batteries is demonstrated. A task-specific iongel electrolyte was prepared by combining in a simple process the excellent performance of sodium metal electrodes of an ionic liquid electrolyte and the mechanical properties of polymers. The iongel was synthesized by fast (<1 min) UV photopolymerization of poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA) in the presence of a saturated 42%mol solution of sodium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide (NaFSI) in trimethyl iso-butyl phosphonium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide (P111i4FSI). The resulting soft solid electrolytes showed high ionic conductivity at room temperature (≥10 -3 S cm -1 ) and tunable storage modulus (10 4 –10 7 Pa). Iongel with the best ionic conductivity and good mechanical properties (Iongel10) showed excellent battery performance: Na/iongel/NaFePO 4 full cells delivered a high specific capacity of 140 mAh g -1 at 0.1 C and 120 mAh g -1 at 1 C with good capacity retention after 30 cycles.

Analysis of Tasks in Autonomous Systems Using the EMRALD Dynamic Risk Assessment Tool

An autonomous system refers to the system that has the power and ability for self-governance in the performance of system functions. Autonomous systems have been actively pursued in a variety of domains such as automotive, aviation, maritime, medicine, and nuclear fields. As an unmanned concept employing the highest automation level, the autonomous system basically performs most of the work in normal operations or emergency situations. However, despite advances in technology, many researchers have noted these systems still require human actions. The nature of human actions on autonomous systems is different than the human actions that are considered in existing systems. Nevertheless, only a few studies have been conducted on 1) characterizing the different types of errors and risks associated with human actions interacting with autonomous systems and 2) how to evaluate human actions in the autonomous operations. As a starting point, this study aims to investigate differences of tasks in autonomous operation compared to those in existing nuclear power plant operation using the Event Modeling Risk Assessment Using Linked Diagram (EMRALD) software. In this paper, insights aspect of human error and time are derived out and discussed based on the output of the EMRALD models.
