Recent radial turbine research at the NASA Lewis Research Center.

The major results obtained in several recent experimental programs on small radial inflow turbines for space applications are presented and discussed. Specifically, experimental and analytical work associated with these systems that has included examination of blade-shroud clearance, blade loading, and exit diffuser design, is considered. Results indicate high efficiency over a wide range of specific speed, and also insensitivity to clearance and blade loading in the radial part of the rotor. The exit diffuser investigation indicated that a conventional conical outer wall may not provide the velocity variation consistent with minimum overall diffuser loss.

Micrometeorite craters on lunar glass particles - The relationship between radial fracture zones and spall zones.

Discussion of the microimpact-crater morphology observed by scanning electron microscopy on a glass bead (nearly 580 microns in maximum diameter) recovered from zone A of the Luna 16 sample. The microcrater has a diameter of approximately 200 microns and a centrally located melted region or pit that is slightly elevated above the surrounding area. Around the pit is a radial fracture zone half of which has spalled off. The spall zone is more than half again as large as the radial fracture zone.

Convective envelopes and radial pulsation of massive red supergiants.

A grid of convective envelope models covering a wide range of astrophysical parameters has been constructed for M-type supergiants with the help of theoretical evolutionary tracks, mixing-length theory, and the inclusion of hydrogen and helium ionization zones. Linear adiabatic pulsation theory has been used to obtain the first four normal modes of radial pulsation for all the models. All the convective envelopes are found to be dynamically stable. The theoretical pulsation calculations confirm that the primary observed period in variable M-type supergiants is probably due to the fundamental mode of radial pulsation.

A simple, radially correlated ground state wavefunction for two electron atoms.

A one parameter function is presented as an approximation to the ground state wavefunction of the two electron radial hamiltonian. The parameter may be fixed by a nonvariational criterion. The resulting expectation value of the radial hamiltonian differs from its exact eigenvalue by about 2 parts in 3000 for helium while the 'local energy' never differs by more than 10% from the exact value over the entire r1-r2 plane. The cases Z = 1 and Z = 3 are also investigated.

Improved photographic prints with a linear radial transmission filter

Linear Radial Transmission Filter (LRTF) is easy to use and yet results in prints which depict more information contained in negative than can be shown by direct printing. LRTF is optical-quality filter which has maximum transmission in center and linear drop in transmission radially out from center.

Fore and aft elastic response characteristics of size 34x9.9, type 7, 14 ply-rated aircraft tires of bias ply, bias belted, and radial belted design

An investigation was conducted to determine the fore-and-aft elastic response characteristics of aircraft tires of bias ply, bias-belted, and radial-belted design. The investigation consisted of: (1)static and rolling tests, (2)a statistical analysis which related the measured tire elastic characteristics to variations in the vertical load, inflation pressure, braking force and/or tire vertical deflection, and (3) a semi-empirical analysis which related the tire elastic behavior to measured wheel slippage during a steady-state braking. The results of this investigation indicate that the bias-belted tire has the largest spring constant value for most loading conditions and the radial-belted tire has the smallest spring constant value.

Radial gradients of galactic cosmic ray protons and helium nuclei

Variation of the cosmic ray intensity as a function away from the sun and its radial derivative is studied by plotting satellite cosmic ray measurements against sea level neutron monitor data. Results show that the solar modulation cavity extends well beyond 2 AU and that irregularities in the sun's magnetic field are carried outward radially by the solar wind, thus sweeping low energy cosmic rays out of the solar system and at the same time cooling cosmic rays reaching the earth.

Interplanetary radial gradients of galactic cosmic ray protons and helium nuclei - Pioneer 8 and 9 measurements from 0.75 to 1.10 AU.

We report measurements of the radial interplanetary cosmic ray gradient made with cosmic ray instruments aboard the Pioneer 8 and 9 spacecraft. The time period covered in these studies is from January 1968 to June 1969. During this time, the radial separation of these two spacecraft varied from 0.75 to 1.10 AU from the sun. This study includes detailed measurements of the differential spectra and gradients of protons and helium nuclei from 2 to 1200 Mev/nucleon. The differential gradient for each species is observed to go through a broad maximum of about 50%/AU at energies corresponding to about 1 BV rigidity, decreasing at both lower and higher rigidities. The proton and helium nuclei gradients are small down to the lowest energies we measure.-

The elastic layer with a cylindrical hole subjected to a nonuniform axisymmetric radial displacement.

A problem in the linear theory of elasticity is considered wherein a layer with a circular cylindrical hole is subjected to a nonuniform axisymmetric radial displacement. The solution utilizes Navier's equations of elasticity which are solved by means of extended Hankel transforms. A special case in which the radial displacement is a linear function of the axial coordinate is presented. Numerical results are given in graphical form for the case when hole radius and layer thickness are equal. The inversion integrals were evaluated numerically using Longman's technique for computing infinite integrals of oscillatory functions.

Ultrasonic scanner for radial and flat panels

An ultrasonic scanning mechanism is described that scans panels of honeycomb construction or with welded seams. It incorporates a device which by simple adjustment is adapted to scan either a flat panel or a radial panel. The supporting structure takes the form of a pair of spaced rails. An immersion tank is positioned between the rails and below their level. A work holder is mounted in the tank and is adapted to hold the flat or radial panel. A traveling bridge is movable along the rails and a carriage is mounted on the bridge.

Calculation of a realistic gradient as a function of radial distance from the sun

Numerical calculations of radial gradients of galactic cosmic ray protons have been performed for a model of the interplanetary cavity which includes processes of diffusion along the spiral interplanetary magnetic field lines, convection, and adiabatic energy change. The increasing spiral nature of the field lines with increasing distance from the sun results in the bulk of the modulation region being beyond the earth. The radial gradients for this model are found to be small near the earth and out to a few AU, increasing as one approaches the boundary.

Propagation of transverse waves in a radially expanding plasma

Investigation of the properties of low-frequency transverse waves in an expanding plasma. The wave vector, the background magnetic field, and the streaming velocity of the plasma are all assumed to lie along the radial direction. Expressions are presented for the radial dependence of the amplitude and phase of left and right circularly polarized waves, correct to first order in the wave frequency divided by the proton cyclotron frequency. Differences in the phase velocities of these two circular polarizations result in a Faraday rotation that can be substantial for typical interplanetary conditions near 1 AU. The implications of these results for a realistic solar wind model with the interplanetary magnetic field along the spiral direction are also considered.

A technique for generating shear waves in cylindrical shells under radial impact

Experimental techniques are developed to study and measure the shear-wave velocity in an aluminum cylindrical shell subjected to a radial impact. The radial impact is obtained by exploding an electrical detonator inserted in plastic plugs mounted on the end of the shell. Strain gages, mounted on the outside surface of the shell at various axial locations, are used to obtain oscilloscope traces from which the shear-wave velocity can be calculated.

Heavy ion beam probe measurements of radial potential profiles in the modified Penning discharge

A heavy ion beam probe was used to examine the radial potential profile of a plasma in the modified Penning discharge. The plasma has strong (approximately kV) electrostatic potentials near the anode ring which can be a large fraction of the injected ion beam energy. A primary (singly ionized) thallium ion beam is injected through the plasma in the midplane of a double Penning anode ring. After passage through the plasma, primary and secondary (doubly ionized) ions are detected with either a set of flat probes or an electrostatic energy analyzer. A calculation of the primary orbit through the plasma is performed to obtain an approximation to the measured primary beam trajectory. As the real radial potential profile is unknown, an adjustable model is used in the computer program. The adjustable potential profile is varied until the best agreement between measured and calculated trajectories is obtained. Secondary orbits are also predicted using the best fitting adjustable profile. The calculations indicate that secondary beams originating at more than one point in the plasma can be simultaneously observed at the electrostatic analyzer with certain primary beam initial conditions.

Fluctuations and the radial variation of the interplanetary magnetic field

Correlations between fluctuations in the solar wind velocity and interplanetary magnetic field can influence the observed average interplanetary magnetic field and its variation with heliocentric radius. The average radial magnetic field still varies as inversely with the square of the radius, but, depending on the radial variation of the correlations, the average azimuthal field could depart from the 1/r dependence expected for an Archimedian spiral. This effect could account in part for those observations which indicate a steeper than 1/r dependence for the average azimuthal interplanetary magnetic field.

The radial variation of solar flare proton anisotropies observed in deep space on Pioneers 10 and 11

The anisotropy of solar-flare protons (greater than 3 MeV) was evaluated at the time of maximum for each of 24 events measured by Pioneers 10 and 11 and was observed to decrease gradually between 1 and 4.7 AU. Since diffusive streaming is related directly to the effective diffusion coefficient parallel to the interplanetary spiral magnetic field, these observations provide a measure of the radial dependence of interplanetary diffusion parameters. Analysis of these results suggests that the spiral field increases gradually with heliocentric distance. An expression is given for the radial dependence of that field.

Radial variation of solar-wind parameters

It is demonstrated that since fluctuations in the solar wind are not small, they can have important effects on the observed average values of parameters in the solar wind and their radial variation. The effect is distinct from the dynamical effect of waves and turbulence, and results from the averaging process. It is concluded that, for example, the average density of the solar wind need not vary as the inverse square of distance, even if the average velocity is constant and radial. The effect on thermal anisotropies might also be important. The magnitudes of the effects depend on presently unknown correlations between fluctuations in the solar wind.

Losses in radial inflow turbines

A study was conducted to determine experimentally and theoretically the losses in radial inflow turbine nozzles. Extensive experimental data was obtained to investigate the flow behavior in a full-scale radial turbine stator annulus. A theoretical model to predict the losses in both the vaned and vaneless regions of the nozzle was developed. In this analysis, the interaction effects between the stator and the rotor are not considered. It was found that the losses incurred due to the end wall boundary layers can be significant, especially if they are characterized by a strong crossflow. The losses estimated using the analytical study are compared with the experimentally determined values.
