Dirty bosons on the Cayley tree: Bose-Einstein condensation versus ergodicity breaking

Building on large-scale quantum Monte Carlo simulations, we investigate the zero-temperature phase diagram of hard-core bosons in a random potential on site-centered Cayley trees with branching number K=2. In order to follow how the Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) is affected by the disorder, we focus on both the zero-momentum density, probing the quantum coherence, and the one-body density matrix (1BDM) whose largest eigenvalue monitors the off-diagonal long-range order. We further study its associated eigenstate which brings useful information about the real-space properties of this leading eigenmode. Upon increasing randomness, we find that the system undergoes a quantum phase transition at finite disorder strength between a long-range ordered BEC state, fully ergodic at large scale, and a new disordered Bose glass regime showing conventional localization for the coherence fraction while the 1BDM displays a nontrivial algebraic vanishing BEC density together with a nonergodic occupation in real space. These peculiar properties can be analytically captured by a simple phenomenological description on the Cayley tree which provides a physical picture of the Bose glass regime.

Coupled dimer and bond-order-wave order in the quarter-filled one-dimensional Kondo lattice model

Motivated by experiments on the organic compound (Per) 2 [Pt(mnt) 2 ], we study the ground state of the onedimensional Kondo lattice model at quarter filling with the density matrix renormalization group method. Here, we show a coupled dimer and bond-order-wave (BOW) state in the weak-coupling regime for the localized spins and itinerant electrons, respectively. The quantum phase transitions for the dimer and the BOW orders occur at the same critical coupling parameter J c , with the opening of a charge gap. The emergence of the combination of dimer and BOW order agrees with the experimental findings of the simultaneous Peierls and spin-Peierls transitions at low temperatures, which provides a theoretical understanding of such a phase transition. We also show that the localized spins in this insulating state have quasi-long-ranged spin correlations with collinear configurations, which resemble the classical dimer order in the absence of a magnetic order.

Conformal field theories are magical

“Magic” is the degree to which a state cannot be approximated by Clifford gates. We study mana, a measure of magic, in the ground state of the Z 3 Potts model, and argue that it is a broadly useful diagnostic for many-body physics. In particular we find that the q = 3 ground state has large mana at the model's critical point, and that this mana resides in the system's correlations. Here, we explain the form of the mana by a simple tensor-counting calculation based on a MERA representation of the state. Because mana is present at all length scales, we conclude that the conformal field theory describing the three-state Potts model critical point is magical. These results control the difficulty of preparing the Potts ground state on an error-corrected quantum computer and constrain tensor network models of AdS-CFT.

Yu-Shiba-Rusinov states and ordering of magnetic impurities near the boundary of a superconducting nanowire

We theoretically study the spectrum induced by one and two magnetic impurities near the boundary of a one-dimensional nanowire in proximity to a conventional s-wave superconductor and extract the ground-state magnetic configuration. We show that the energies of the subgap states, supported by the magnetic impurities, are strongly affected by the boundary for distances less than the superconducting coherence length. In particular, when the impurity is moved towards the boundary, multiple quantum phase transitions periodically occur in which the parity of the superconducting condensate oscillates between even and odd. We find that the magnetic ground-state configuration of two magnetic impurities depends not only on the distance between them, but also explicitly on their distance away from the boundary of the nanowire. As a consequence, the magnetic ground state can switch from ferromagnetic to antiferromagnetic while keeping the interimpurity distance unaltered by simultaneously moving both impurities away from the boundary. The ground-state magnetic configuration of two impurities is found analytically in the weak coupling regime and exactly for an arbitrary impurity coupling strength using numerical tight-binding simulations.

Dirac fast scramblers

In this work, we introduce a family of Gross-Neveu-Yukawa models with a large number of fermion and boson flavors as higher dimensional generalizations of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model. The models may be derived from local lattice couplings and give rise to Lorentz invariant critical solutions in 1+1 and 2+1 dimensions. These solutions imply anomalous dimensions of both bosons and fermions tuned by the number ratio of boson to fermion flavors. In 1+1 dimension the solution represents a stable critical phase, while in 2+1 dimension it governs a quantum phase transition. We compute the out of time order correlators in the 1+1 dimensional model, showing that it exhibits growth with the maximal Lyapunov exponent λ L =2πT in the low temperature limit.

Metal-insulator transition in transition metal dichalcogenide heterobilayer moiré superlattices

Moiré superlattices formed in two-dimensional semiconductor heterobilayers provide a new realization of Hubbard model physics in which the number of electrons per effective atom can be tuned at will. Here we report on an exact diagonalization study of the electronic properties of half-filled narrow moiré bands in which correlation strengths are varied by changing twist angles or interaction strengths. We construct a phase diagram for the bilayer, identifying where the metal-insulator phase transition occurs, estimating the sizes of the charge gaps in the insulating phase, and commenting on the nature of the transition and the importance of subdominant interaction parameters.

Dynamical piezomagnetic effect in time-reversal-invariant Weyl semimetals with axionic charge density waves

Charge density waves (CDWs) in Weyl semimetals (WSMs) have been shown to induce an exotic axionic insulating phase in which the sliding mode (phason) of the CDW acts as a dynamical axion field, giving rise to a large positive magnetoconductance. In this work, we predict that dynamical strain can induce a bulk orbital magnetization in time-reversal (TR)-invariant WSMs that are gapped by a CDW. Here, we term this effect the “dynamical piezomagnetic effect” (DPME). Unlike in J. Gooth et al., the DPME introduced in this work occurs in a bulk-constant (i.e., static and spatially homogeneous in the bulk) CDW, and does not rely on fluctuations, such as a phason. By studying the low-energy effective theory and a minimal tight-binding (TB) model, we find that the DPME originates from an effective valley axion field that couples the electromagnetic gauge field with a strain-induced pseudogauge field. In particular, whereas the piezoelectric effects studied in previous works are characterized by 2D Berry curvature, the DPME represents the first example of a fundamentally 3D strain effect originating from the Chern-Simons 3-form. We further find that the DPME has a discontinuous change at a critical value of the phase of the CDW order parameter. We demonstrate that, when there is a jump in the DPME, the surface of the system undergoes a topological quantum phase transition (TQPT), while the bulk remains gapped. Hence, the DPME provides a bulk signature of the boundary TQPT in a TR-invariant Weyl CDW.

Generative deep-learning reveals collective variables of Fermionic systems

Complex processes of fermionic systems ranging from protein folding to nuclear fission often follow a low-dimensional reaction path parametrized in terms of a few collective variables. In nuclear theory, variables related to the shape of the nuclear density in a mean-field picture are key to describing the large amplitude collective motion of the neutrons and protons. Exploring the adiabatic energy landscape spanned by these degrees of freedom reveals the possible reaction channels while simulating the dynamics in this reduced space yields their respective probabilities. Unfortunately, this theoretical framework breaks down whenever the systems encounters a quantum phase transition with respect to the collective variables. Here, in this study, we introduce a novel generative deep-learning algorithm designed to build reaction paths that ensure that the many-fermion wave function stays differentiable with respect to the collective variables. This approach is applicable to any fermionic system described by a coherent state. We use the case of potential energy curves in the 16 O nucleus within the Hartree-Fock theory to illustrate its main features.

Chiral Magnetism and High-Temperature Skyrmions in B20-Ordered Co-Si

Magnets with chiral crystal structures and helical spin structures have recently attracted much attention as potential spin-electronics materials, but their relatively low magnetic-ordering temperatures are a disadvantage. While cobalt has long been recognized as an element that promotes high-temperature magnetic ordering, most Co-rich alloys are achiral and exhibit collinear rather than helimagnetic order. Crystallographically, the B20-ordered compound CoSi is an exception due to its chiral structure, but it does not exhibit any kind of magnetic order. Here, we use nonequilibrium processing to produce B20-ordered Co 1+ x Si 1₋ x with a maximum Co solubility of x = 0.043. Above a critical excess-Co content x c = 0.028 ), the alloys are magnetically ordered, and for x = 0.043, a critical temperature $T_c$ = 328 K is obtained, the highest among all B20-type magnets. The crystal structure of the alloy supports spin spirals caused by Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions, and from magnetic measurements we estimate that the spirals have a periodicity of about 17 nm. In this work, our density-functional calculations explain the combination of high magnetic-ordering temperature and short periodicity in terms of a quantum phase transition where excess-cobalt spins are coupled through the host matrix.

Multiple Charge Density Waves and Superconductivity Nucleation at Antiphase Domain Walls in the Nematic Pnictide Ba 1– x Sr x Ni 2 As 2

How superconductivity interacts with charge or nematic order is one of the great unresolved issues at the center of research in quantum materials. Ba 1– x Sr x Ni 2 As 2 (BSNA) is a charge ordered pnictide superconductor recently shown to exhibit a sixfold enhancement of superconductivity due to nematic fluctuations near a quantum phase transition (at $x_c$ = 0.7). The superconductivity is, however, anomalous, with the resistive transition for $0.4 < x < x_c$ occurring at a higher temperature than the specific heat anomaly. Here, using x-ray scattering, we discovered a new charge density wave (CDW) in BSNA in this composition range. The CDWis commensurate with a period of two lattice parameters, and is distinct from the two CDWs previously reported in this material. We argue that the anomalous transport behavior arises from heterogeneous superconductivity nucleating at antiphase domain walls in this CDW. We also present new data on the incommensurate CDW, previously identified as being unidirectional, showing that it is a rotationally symmetric “4$\textit{Q}$” state with $C_4$ symmetry. Our study establishes BSNA as a rare material containing three distinct CDWs, and an exciting test bed for studying coupling between CDW, nematic, and SC orders.

Universal finite-time thermodynamics of many-body quantum machines from Kibble-Zurek scaling

We demonstrate the existence of universal features in the finite-time thermodynamics of quantum machines by considering a many-body quantum Otto cycle in which the working medium is driven across quantum critical points during the unitary strokes. Specifically, we consider a quantum engine powered by dissipative energizing and relaxing baths. We show that under very generic conditions, the output work is governed by the Kibble-Zurek mechanism; i.e., it exhibits a universal power-law scaling with the driving speed through the critical points. We also optimize the finite-time thermodynamics as a function of the driving speed. The maximum power and the corresponding efficiency take a universal form, and are reached for an optimal speed that is governed by the critical exponents. We exemplify our results by considering a transverse-field Ising spin chain as the working medium. For this model, we also show how the efficiency and power vary as the engine becomes critical.

Dynamics and phases of nonunitary Floquet transverse-field Ising model

Inspired by current research on measurement-induced quantum phase transitions, we analyze the nonunitary Floquet transverse-field Ising model with complex nearest-neighbor couplings and complex transverse fields. Unlike its unitary counterpart, the model shows a number of steady phases, stable to integrability-breaking perturbations. Some phases have robust edge modes and/or spatiotemporal long-range orders in the bulk. The transitions between the phases have extensive entanglement entropy, whose scaling with the system size depends on the number of the real quasiparticle modes in the spectrum at the transition. In particular, the volume-law scaling appears on some critical lines, protected by pseudo-Hermiticity. Both the scaling of entanglement entropy in steady states and the evolution after a quench are compatible with the non-Hermitian generalization of the quasiparticle picture of Calabrese and Cardy at least qualitatively. Mapping twist-tuned multiband topology in bilayer WSe 2

Semiconductor moiré superlattices have been shown to host a wide array of interaction-driven ground states. However, twisted homobilayers have been difficult to study in the limit of large moiré wavelengths, where interactions are most dominant. In this study, we conducted local electronic compressibility measurements of twisted bilayer WSe 2 (tWSe 2 ) at small twist angles. We demonstrated multiple topological bands that host a series of Chern insulators at zero magnetic field near a “magic angle” around 1.23°. Using a locally applied electric field, we induced a topological quantum-phase transition at one hole per moiré unit cell. Finally, our work establishes the topological phase diagram of a generalized Kane-Mele-Hubbard model in tWSe 2 , demonstrating a tunable platform for strongly correlated topological phases.
