Cladding For Transversely-Pumped Laser Rod

Combination of suitable dimensioning and cladding of neodymium:yttrium aluminum garnet of similar solid-state laser provides for more efficient utilization of transversely-incident pump light from diode lasers. New design overcomes some of limitations of longitudinal- and older transverse-pumping concepts and promotes operation at higher output powers in TEM00 mode.

Analysis of He-N2-CO2-UF6 laser system

Direct nuclear pumping of a CO2 laser system by the U-235(n,ff)FF reaction is examined. Calculations based on a kinetic model which takes into consideration all relevant kinetic processes indicate that dissociation of CO2 prevents the efficient operation of a nuclear pumped CO2 laser system.

The Dual Wavelength UV Transmitter Development for Space Based Ozone DIAL Measurements

The objective of this research is to develop efficient 1-micron to UV wavelength conversion technology to generate tunable, single mode, pulsed UV wavelengths of 320 nm and 308 nm. The 532 nm wavelength radiation is generated by a 1064 nm Nd:YAG laser through second harmonic generation. The 532 nm pumps an optical parametric oscillator (OPO) to generate 803 nm. The 320 nm is generated by sum frequency generation (SFG) of 532 nm and 803 nm wavelengths The hardware consists of a conductively cooled, 1 J/pulse, single mode Nd:YAG pump laser coupled to an efficient RISTRA OPO and SFG assembly-Both intra and extra-cavity approaches are examined for efficiency.

A self-seeded SRS system for the generation of 1.54-micron eye-safe radiation

A light source is described for the efficient generation of 1.54-micron for eye-safe aerosol lidar operation. The system is based upon an Nd:YAG laser at 1.06 micron which is then Raman-shifted in methane to produce light at the first Stokes wavelength of 1.54 micron. First Stokes light generated in the backward direction was retroreflected back into the Raman cell for amplification in the tail of the 10 ns pump beam. The energy conversion efficiency and the spatial beam quality of the amplified first Stokes were found to be adversely affected when operated at higher repetition rates due to a thermal gradient produced in the generation region. A Stokes energy of 25 mJ was obtained for a pumping energy of 140 mJ at a repetition rate of 10 Hz. The beam divergence of the amplified Stokes radiation was measured to be less than 1 mrad. The optimized results demonstrate the applicability of this radiation for eye-safe lidar measurements.

Continuous-Wave, Diode-Pumped, Tunable Tm,Ho:YLF Laser

Unique features include high efficiency and tunability at wavelengths near 2.067 micrometers. Continuous-wave, diode-pumped Tm,Ho:YLF laser tuned by tilting Fabry-Perot etalon and/or adjusting temperature of Tm,Ho:YLF crystal. Proposed for use in remote sensing of winds and in remote sensing of CO2 and H2O, of which many strong absorption lines over-lap laser tuning range. Range extended by tuning to wave-length between CO2 and H2O absorption peaks.

Space qualified Nd:YAG laser (phase 1 - design)

Results of a design study and preliminary design of a space qualified Nd:YAG laser are presented. A theoretical model of the laser was developed to allow the evaluation of the effects of various parameters on its performance. Various pump lamps were evaluated and sum pumping was considered. Cooling requirements were examined and cooling methods such as radiation, cryogenic and conductive were analysed. Power outputs and efficiences of various configurations and the pump and laser lifetime are discussed. Also considered were modulation and modulating methods.

Analysis of a fuel cell on-site integrated energy system for a residential complex

The energy use and costs of the on-site integrated energy system (OS/IES) which provides electric power from an on-site power plant and recovers heat that would normally be rejected to the environment is compared to a conventional system purchasing electricity from a utility and a phosphoric acid fuel cell powered system. The analysis showed that for a 500-unit apartment complex a fuel OS/IES would be about 10% more energy conservative in terms of total coal consumption than a diesel OS/IES system or a conventional system. The fuel cell OS/IES capital costs could be 30 to 55% greater than the diesel OS/IES capital costs for the same life cycle costs. The life cycle cost of a fuel cell OS/IES would be lower than that for a conventional system as long as the cost of electricity is greater than $0.05 to $0.065/kWh. An analysis of several parametric combinations of fuel cell power plant and state-of-art energy recovery systems and annual fuel requirement calculations for four locations were made. It was shown that OS/IES component choices are a major factor in fuel consumption, with the least efficient system using 25% more fuel than the most efficient. Central air conditioning and heat pumps result in minimum fuel consumption while individual air conditioning units increase it, and in general the fuel cell of highest electrical efficiency has the lowest fuel consumption.

Pump Flow Analysis

Ingersoll-Rand Research, Inc.'s use of COSMIC's computer program MERIDL permits designers to evaluate performance and efficiency characteristics to be expected from the pump's impeller. It also provides information that enables a trained hydraulic engineer to make design improvements. Company was able to avoid the cost of developing new software and to improve some product design features.

Injection-seeded operation of a Q-switched Cr,Tm,Ho:YAG laser

Single-frequency Tm,Ho:YAG lasers operating near 2 microns are attractive sources for several applications including eye-safe laser radar (lidar) and pumping of AgGaSe2 parametric oscillators for efficient generation of longer wavelengths. As part of a program to develop a coherent lidar system using Tm,Ho:YAG lasers, a diode laser-pumped tunable CW single-longitudinal-mode (SLM) Cr:Tm:Ho:YAG laser and a flashlamp-pumped single-transverse-mode Q-switched Cr,Tm,Ho:YAG laser were developed. The CW laser was used to injection-seed the flashlamp-pumped laser, resulting in SLM Q-switched output. Operational characteristics of the CW and Q-switched lasers and injection-seeding results are reported.

Porphyrins in the interstellar medium (in grains)

Spectral sensitivity of the chromophores to their immediate chemical environment establishes some of the chemical constituents of the grains in which they reside. These are: (1) Paraffins, such as, octane, nonane, decane, and others...(needed for Shpolskii matrices and producing quasilines); and (2) Pyridine. The presence of pyridine is required not only to produce the spectral DIB matching, but also to produce the 36 cm(sup -1) crystal field splitting of the S(sub 1) electronic state. The presence of pyridine in the grains can be confirmed spectroscopically. Pyridine produces a transmission window at 2175 A, matching exactly the well known UV hump. On grain reflection, some of the incoming UV radiation is absorbed into the grain's outer layers. Spikes in the lab and in the astronomical data are due to vibronic transitions in pyridine. The lab spectroscopy reported here clearly establishes the presence of MgTBP, H2TPB, and pyridine in the interstellar grains. The high fluorescence efficiency of MgTBP (being optically pumped in the visible) apparently accounts for all the observed UIR emissions.
